Аннотация: In this symposium the term symbiosis is interpreted in its widest sense as the intimate association of two dissimilar organisms. The examples chosen are selective rather than comprehensive and cover a wide range, including the marginal case of bacteriophage lysogeny. The majority of symbiotic associations discussed are of the more conventional type, representing mutualistic or at least non-pathogenic partnerships, and include associations between microorganisms (lichens), between microorganisms and higher plants (leguminous and non-leguminous root nodules, mycorrhyza) and between microorganisms and animals (protozoa, insects and vertebrates) The purpose of the symposium is to bring together information about types of interaction that occur between the symbionts in this kind of association; there is also an account of recent advances in the biochemistry of nitrogen fixation

Аннотация: The book deals with the numerous biological, physical, and chemical processes which continuously go on in the soil in which microbes are involved. Without soil microbes, life on this planet would soon come to a standstill. The soil is a more or less homogeneous system which has resulted from the decomposition of plant and animals remains. The numerous living forms which spend all or part of their life in the soil range from the submicroscopic viruses and phages, through the microscopic bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, algae, and protozoa to the lower animal forms, the worms, insects, and rotifers, many of which can be seen and recognized with the naked eye.This organisms, comprising both the living forms and their dead bodies, as well as the products of their decomposition, such as carbon dioxide and organic acids, interact with rock constituents to give rise to soil. The soil thus gains the caracteristic properties that make it a suitable medium for plant and animal life.

Аннотация: A study was made of the cause of death of 274 larvae of the European corn borer that died while being held in USDA laboratories in Ohio and Iowa. Infection and death of larvae was found to be caused by certain fungi, protozoa, or bacteria, or combinations of these organisms.
