Аннотация: This proceedings is the product of an international symposium on the Larix species of North America, Europe, and Asia. Western larch, an important species in the Western United States and Canada, was featured. The symposium included information on ecology, management, silviculture, regeneration processes, growth, wildlife, vegetation succession, silvics, history, genetics, breeding and provenance testing, physiology, fire, insects and desease, and research needs. This proceedings illustrates the importance of Larix in the temperate forests of the Northern Hemisphere

Norway spruce -- provenance -- damage -- yield

Аннотация: In the late 1930's, IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations) made available good seed of Norway spruce for establishment of provenance trials in eastern North America. Although World War II prevented best use of this material, several provenance experiments were planted. This paper: (1) reviews briefly the results to date of these experiments, (2) mentions several difficulties in growing Norway spruce, and (3) indicates the potential productivity of Norway spruce in various regions

spruce -- hybridization

Аннотация: The hypothesis was tested that red spruce and black spruce are two distinct species which are capable of hybridizing, and that intrigressive hybridization or introgression has occurred since Pleistocene glaciations. Evidence was obtained from the literature regarding F1 hybrids, isolating mechanisms, and the possible evolution of the species. Data are presented concerning morphological variation of seedlings in provenance tests, and of trees in natural stands. Mosr samples from the overlapping range showed a proportion of individuals typical of one species with other individuals showing a degree of resemblance to the other species. In these latter individuals, character assotiation was evident. While the data are not conclusive, they are compatible with the theory of introgression

Аннотация: The present symposium includes the reports on genetics and selection of only coniferous tree species. The coniferous trees are the main forest-formative tree species of the north. At the territory of the USSR there are areals of such forest-formative tree species as pine and spruce, larch, fir, cedar-pine a.o. All these tree species occupy vast territories.

Аннотация: The purpose of this study are as follows. First, to clarify the provenance and identification of 52 taxa of conifers in Korea that are of highly economic value and of importance as afforested taxa, were review the existing system of taxonomically classification and the phylogenetic interspecific and intergeneric relationships. Second, to estimate the Gynotype of the next-generation individual by identifying the karyotypical characteristics to each tree species in a sense of forest genetics breeding and tracking the karyotype of parents in crossbreeding. Third, to obtain the basic cytological materials capable of verifying the genetic variation of a new individual created by the tussuculture or genetic engeneering techniques.

Progenies from parent trees with narrow branch angles had comparably narrow angles, too. Other field experiments which ere established in 1956 and included progenies from the same types of crossing. Measurements were made for the first time in 1960 and repeated during the folowing years

genotypes -- photoperiods -- thermoperiods

Аннотация: These preliminary observations demonstrate that the phytotron will make it possible to determine the various photo- and thermoperiodic systems controlling the growth of different provenances of European conifers. It is quite likely that optimal growth and bud breakage are determined by night temperature in one provenance, by day temperature in others, and by the difference between the day and night temperature in still others as demonstrated for different coniferous tree species of North America. Finally, there may be provenances in which thermoperiodic growth control is absent and only photoperiodism operates. A set of 30 climates differeing with regard to photoperiods and thermoperiods are being used simultaneously in the phytotron for this purpose

Аннотация: Stands of Scots pine along the south-eastern coast of Sweden differ from inland stands at the same latitude as regards frequency of trees with broad crowns and crooked stems. In oder to investigate the nature and extent of the differences, a provenance trial was established with material of coastal and inland origin. The experimental design involved testings at two sites (coastal and inland), at two spacings at each site and with two methods of establishment (sowing and planting). Differences between provenances were established as regards germination, survival, occurrence of prolepsis and some blanching characteristic. Inland pines were less well adapted to coastal conditions than were coastal pines to inland environment. Different methods were demonstrated.

stem height -- regression analysis -- caracteristics

Аннотация: Data on survival, stem height, stem volume and yield per hectare from a provenance trial with Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) at Nordanas, lat 64 grad. 19', long 18 grad. 09', alt 400 m, are presented in this report. Regression analyses were carried out to test the influence of transfer on the parameters studied. For the most important characteristics, yield per hectare and survival, it was found that a transfer by 1-2 latitudes southward will imply an improvement. Since the progenies from individual trees within thepopulations were kept apart the variation within populations could be analysed. This variation was found to be considerable both for survival and height in some of the populations.

provenance trials -- mortality -- classification into site

Аннотация: By means of results from provenance trials in northern Sweden, a map of severity index for various latitudes and altitudes was drawn up. The severity index is defined as the expected percentage plant mortality rate in the local population during the first 20 years after establishment of the plantation. By combining transfer effects based on data from all trials, a general trend of the transfer effect was calculated. The regression obtained showed that, at constant altitude, each degree of transfer southwards meant an increase of survival of 10.8 percentage units; at constant latitude, every 100 metres of downward transfer implied an increase in survival of 3.0 percentage units.Optimum transfer is defined as the transfer giving maximum volume yield, which equals 70-80 per cent survival.

Аннотация: The aim of this study is to describe the magnitude and sources of provenances variation in wood density and tracheid length in Sweden. The study indicates that changes in forest management and forest tree breeding are needed in order to increase basic density and fibre length. Basic density and tracheid length were assessed in 67 provenances from one or more of 18 provenance traials at the age of 30 years. From each provenance and trial 10 trees were sampled from a 1.25 metre spacing and 10 trees from 2.0 metre spacing whenever possible. Assessments were made at growth rings five and ten respectively from the bark for basic density and at growth ring five from the bark for tracheid length.
