Аннотация: В сборнике, написанном крупнейшими специалистами-фитопатологами США, Англии, Канады, Японии, Италии, рассматриваются защитные механизмы растений, действующие при поражении их болезнями, и стратегии селекции на устойчивость к патогенам. Детально освещены процессы, проходящие при проникании патогенов в растение, значение рельефа поверхности хозяина, явление узнавания, взаимосвязь между веществами, выделяемыми патогеном, и выраженностью симптомов болезни, а также другие факторы, определяющие восприимчивость, устойчивость или толерантность хозяина. Особое внимание уделено роли изученности всех механизмов, вовлеченных в процесс инфицирования, в селекции растений на устойчивость и в практической борьбе с болезнями.

Аннотация: The static tree pulling method, strength and components of anchorage, structure and dynamics of root systems and the influence of stemreduction strategies on allocation of biomass and wind stability of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) were analyzed. Concluding , that the wind stability is supported by implementing 'the lowest possible stem number in early years and the highest possible stem number in older age", a decreasing thinning intensity with increasing age (from D-Grade (very heavy thinning) to A-Grade (non-thinning) was proposed. The book describes the natural ecological basis for wind resistance of Conifers.

Аннотация: Balsam fir, a small to medium-sized coniferous tree, is one of the most symmetrical and beautiful spesies of our northern forests. The wood is light in weight and color, limber, soft, and low in decay resistance. It has good pulping properties and is used principally in the manufacture of pulp. Balsam fir is also widely used for interior knotty panelling, fish box construction, crates, cooperage, millwork, and similar products not requiring high structural strength.

Аннотация: Based on experiments undertaken during a period of ten years and on examination of several thousand Norway Spruce trees requirements for as well as possibilities and methods of resistance research on Fomes annosus are described. Fomes Annosus is the most important pathogene of brown rot in Norway spruce. As a first step biology of the pathogene and its way of infection have to be clarified, since research on this subject is difficult, costly and time consuming.

Аннотация: Forest entomology is that branch of the biological sciences which deals with insects in their relation to forests and forest products. The majority of species treated in this book have a direct effect either upon the trees themselves or upon the products derived from the trees. Some, however, have an indirect effect in that they are predaceous or parasitic and prey upon the tree pests. In addition to these two types there is a multitude of insects entering into the forest economy that are neither pests of trees nor parasitic or predatory enemies of those pests.

Аннотация: An essential aim of the work was to test domestic rye varieties and strains on their resistance behaviour to C. pur. with the help of artificial inoculations. This work was done on the testing grounds of the Federal Biological Institute for Agriculture and Forestry in Brunswick. In the individual test years, although the level of infection was very varied, clear diffrences in levels of susceptibility between the rye species tested could be identified. The native rye species had on average less ergot content than the hybrid varieties.

Аннотация: Geomorphology, the fascinating science that has landforms and their evolution. The study of landforms depends o largely upon the viewpoint we take. The relief of the earth's crust tends to change at a very slow rate, which, although varying with the resistance of the rocks and with climatic conditions, hardly ever creates any appreciable difference in landform within the span of a lifetime or even longer period. Both structural and climatological factors have to be taken into consideration in such attempts to reconstruct the landforms from which the present ones have been derived, or to visualize the landforms which will evolve in the future. The multitude of processes which form the mechanism of these changes has often however been rather neglected in this type of studies.Quite a different type of geomorphological studies, on the contrary, lays special emphasis on processes such as erosion, sedimentation, etc. and on the minor changes in the land caused by these processes in short period of time, for instance a few years, decades or centures. Occasionally occuring abrupt and sometimes even catastrophic phenomena such as landslides, volcanic eruptions and sudden changes in the position of river courses are more spectacular processes, and their effects in particular confron us with the obvious incorrectness of the concept of permanence of landforms
