forest products -- growth -- utilisation

Аннотация: Mankind will depend on renewable resources produced at low energy cost-such as forest products. Greater demands will require increased growth as well as utilisation with reduced loss. After a certain age, trees form heartwood containing increased amounts of extractives which are also formed in injured sapwood or are exuded. Their presence can provide trees with resistance to disease and forest attack, and they can also affect the efficient utisation of wood. In this book different facets of heartwood, extractives and exudates are reviewed as a whole for the first time. Basic biological and chemical aspects are brought together in a systematic fashion and will be invaluable for biologists, wood scientists and technologists

sapwood -- temperature -- moisture

Аннотация: Basically, a decay process in wood can be described as an aerobic breakdown of wood under the development of CO2 and H2O. Less intense processes, not investigated in this paper, can also take place under anaerobic condidtions. Weight-loss tests are the most common method for measuring the decay. These tests are time consuming and are fraught with various practical difficulties. The purpose of this investigation was to study the CO2 output of decaying wood. A simple method which made very small demands on laboratory equipment was used. The method is compared with weight-loss tests

decay experiments -- physiological experiments

Аннотация: The destructive activity on wood and physiological behaviour of Polyporus betulinus have been studied. When attacking birch wood under favourable conditions P. betulinus proved able to cause a maximal weight loss of about 71%. This was also true for Polyporus marginatus which was chosen as a comparative organism. Wood moisture increased steeply during the attack, at its peak reaching more than three times the moisture at the start. P. betulinus and P. marginatus did not cause so great a weight loss on birch sapwood as the most destructive white rotters
