International congress of mathematicians (1983; Warsaw)
[Текст] : proceedings of the International congress of mathematicians, Aug. 16-24, 1983, Warszawa. 1 / Ed.Z.Ciesielski, C.Olech. - Warszawa% ; a.o. : PWN - Polish Scientific Publishers, 1984. - 848 с. : ill. - Bibliogr.: at the end of art. - 1.00 р., 16.88 р.

Аннотация: International Congress of Mathematicians, ICM, are organized every four years. The first was held in Zurich in 1897 and was succeeded by: Paris - 1900, Heidelberg - 1904, Rome - 1908, Cambridge - 1912, Stockholm - 1916, Toronto - 1924, Bolonia - 1928, Zurich - 1932, Oslo - 1936, Harvard - 1950, Amsterdam - 1954, Edinburgh - 1958, Stockholm - 1962, Moscow - 1966, Nice - 1970, Vancouver - 1974, Helsinki - 1978. The ICM-82 held in Warsaw and 19th in succession, was postponed for one year and took place between August 16-24, 1983. These Congresses are now sponsored and supervised by the International Mathematical Union. "Already at the Zurich meeting in 1897 it was stated that the first objectives of the Congress are to promote the personal relations between mathematicians from different countries and to give a survey of the state of our science. The rules of the congresses have, through the years, become firmer and since 1962 the IMU is formally responsible for the scientific content." (from the address of Lennart Carleson, the President of IMU, at the opening ceremony.) Those firmer rules mean that the scientific program of a congress is decided upon by an international committee established by the IMU. The committee for the ICM-82 consisted of Jean-Pierre Serre, Paris, chairman; Michael Atiyah, Oxford; Bogdan Bojarski, Warsaw; William Browder, Princeton; Zbigniew Ciesielski, Sopot; Pierre Deligne, Paris; Ludvig Faddeev, Leningrad; Stanislaw Lojasiewicz, Cracow; and Shmuel Winograd, New York. After two years of preparatory work and consultations, involving hundreds of other leading mathematicians from all over the world, the committee produced a list of invited speakers. In its final form it contained 16 plenary speakers and 129 section speakers. There were 19 sections, covering a whole range of mathematical research. Topics varied from the foundations of mathematics, number theory, different aspects of algebra, geometry and analysis, probability theory, differential equations, through applied mathematics (mathematical physics, control theory, numerical mathematics, combinatorics and computer science) of history and education. The Proceedings contain the texts of the invited addresses and form, as a whole, a thorough and fairly complete survey of the present state of mathematical sciences. Out of the 145 invited lectures the book contains 12 plenary addresses and 123 section addresses which is over 93% of the maximum possible number. This unique two-volume publication is a highly valuable item for any mathematical research library and it is hoped that research mathematicians will enjoy having it on their book-shelves. One of the highlights of each congress is the awarding of the Fields medals. The recipients of this most highly rated distinction in mathematics at the Warsaw Congress were: Alain Connes, Paris; William Thurston, Princeton and Shing-Tung Yau, Princeton. Another outstanding event was the awarding for the first time, of the Nevanlinna prize in "Mathematicial Aspects of Information Science", whose recipient was Robert Tarjan, Stanford. The Proceedings contain reports on the work of each of the medallists. They also include a report on the opening and closing ceremonies, information about the organization of the Congress and a list of the participants, containing about 2300 names from over 60 countries.

forest fuel system -- bioenergy -- biofuel -- wood fuel -- evaluation techniques

Аннотация: This study had two main aims. The first was to increase knowledge of forest fuel systems utilising tree sections, especially that concerning interactions with factors external to the system. The second was to develop the technique of "retrospective position analysis" as a means of evaluating projects. Position analysis is identified as an adequate evaluation method and is retrospectively applied to the of projects. Position analysis permits broad-system studies and process evaluation of each project, which gives a good base for understanding the effects and outcome of projects and of the system as a whole. The main conclusion from evaluation of tree-section systems is that, although there was much activity in the mid 1980s, utilisation decreased in the early 1990s, owing to low oil prices and to the low price of other biofuels. An increase in the quality requirements of pulp and primary paper products during the evaluation period, made it difficult for tree-section systems to attain the new grades. The technical development of tree-section systems is also lagging behind. However, a few local tree-section systems still are competitive

Аннотация: Tropical forests are widely recognized as the most species-rich terrestrial ecosystems on earth and include many of he world's most endangered habitats and organisms. Biodiverse, economically crucial, and ecologically irreplacable, tropical forests have captured the attention of scientists, policy makers, and all throughtful citizens. However, tropical forests remain poorly understood. Tropical forests: Management and Ecology addresses the need for a synthesis of information on both the ecological and socioeconomic aspects of human use of tropical forest ecosystems. The book was prepared to recognize the distinguished tradition of research at the USDA Forest Service Institute of Tripocal Forestry in Puerto Rico. Its seventeen chapters were prepared by leading tropical ecologists and divided into four sections: The Problem and Background, Long-Term Ecological Research in Puerto-Rico, Research Areas that Require Increased Focus in the Tropical, Direction for Future Research in Tropical Forests. This book will be a lasting resource for ecologists, tropical biologists, foresters, natural resource specialists, and policymakers with an interest in the tropics

Аннотация: Ecosystems in regions sharring the mediterranean climate have provided scientists with exceptional opportunities to formulate and evaluate hypotheses concerning ecology, biogeography, and paleobiology. Comparison of mediterranean ecosystems in different parts of the world not onlymilluminates theories of ecological convergence, but also facilitates critical understanding of key eciphysiological and population processes. This volume presents a diverse collection of papers exploring ecological phenomena of the tree mediterranean-climate regions that lie aroun d the Pacific basin and is organized into six sections: History of mediterranean floras, Comparative biogeography, Vegetation structure and soils, Seed and fruits, Animal physiology and community structure, Vegetation change and human impacts. This book considers past work in mediterranean systems, but is unique in synthesizing new research from Chile, and in extending the comparison of American mediterranean systems to include Australia. It will be of interest to all scientists working in these climatic regions, as well as to those with an interest in convergent evolution and biogeography

Аннотация: In the last 20 years dendrochronology as a research field on its own has grown significantly and acquired a permanent role in ecology, climatology, geology, archeology, and history. Presented here are the morphological, ecological, and anatomical characteristics of different tree species and their relationship to tree-ring research. Each species is introduced by an illustration of its exterior form and described in such a manner as to make it adaptable and comparable to chronological, ecological, and climatic studies. Further, the soil, climatic and ecological conditions as well as the species distribution are presented, and microscopic representation, mostly cross sections, define the tree-ring sequences. Brief summaries of preveous dendrochronological studies show how the species have been used in the past.

Аннотация: Ecologists increasingly recognize the importance of scale in our understanding of nature. Landscape ecology in particular emphasizes temporal and spatial scales. While research and management of wildlife have traditionally emphasized studies at smaller scales, it is now acknowledged that larger, landscape-level patterns strongly influence demographic processes in wild animal species. This book is the first to provide the conceptual basis for learning how larger scale patterns and processes can influence the biology and management of wildlife species. It is divided into three sections: * Underlying concepts; * Landscape metrics; * Applications and large-scale management. This book will be welcomed by scientists, and managers with an interest in and responsibility for the health of wild populations and their role in ecosystems.

Аннотация: According to the latest forest inventory in Germany the total area of Douglas-fir plantations is approximately 134.000 hectares. At present approxomately 80% of these stands are in the first and second age classes (less than 40 years old). Therefore the majority of the growing stock is composed of small sized timber. As a result of the present situation in the timber market the utilization of small sized Douglas-fir timber from thinned stands is problematic. The following conclusions are drawn. By planting Douglas-fir stands with 1800 to a maximum of 2500 trees per hectare it should be possible within the first thinning measure to reduce the amount of the small sized timber which is difficult to sell. The thinnings offer better possibilities of utilization and cosequently for sale because of their larger dimension, their high portion of heardwood and their more homogenous inner wood properties and also because of a higher portion of sawlog stem sections. With the recommended number of plants per hectare it should also be possible to grow stable stands for high value timber production.

Externally, the diseased larvae exhibit a yellowish-green color over the mid-gut region. Upon dissection, the mid-gut is seen to have assumed a yellowish opaque appearance. Histological sections show the cytoplasm of the gut cells to contain polyhedra of two general size groups. Electron micrographs of alkaline-dissolved polyhedra reveal the presence of numerous spherical particles presumed to be the virus. The diseased larvae were originally observed during laboratory experiments in specimens subjected to the stress of crowding; but similarly diseased caterpillars have also been collected from alfalfa fields
