Аннотация: Microcatchment water harvesting (MCWH) improved the survival and growth of planted trees on heavy soils in Eastern Kenya five to six years after planting. In the best method, the cross-tied furrow microcatchments, the main annual increments (MAI; based on the average biomass of living trees multiplied by tree density and survival) of the total and usable biomass in PROSOPIS JULIFLORA were 2787 and 1610 kg ha-1 a-1 respectively, when the initial tree density was 500 to 1667 trees per hegtare. Based on survival, the idigenous ACACIA HORRIDA, A. MELLIFERA and A. ZANZIBARICA were the most suitable species for planting using MCWH. When both survival and yield were considered, a local seed source of the introduced P.JULIFLORA was superior to all other species. The MAI in MCWH was at the best distinctly higher than that in natural vegetation (163-307 and 66-111 kg ha-1 a-1 for total and usable biomass respectively); this cannot satisfy the fuelwood demand of concentrated populations, such as towns or irrigation schemes. The density of seeds of woody species in the topsoil was 40.1 seeds m-2 in the ACACIA- COMMIPHORA bushland and 12.6 seeds m-2 in the zone between the bushland and the Tana riverine forest. Rehabilitation of woody vegetation using the soil seed bank alone proved difficult due to the lack of seeds of desirable species. The regeneration and dynamics of woody vegetation were also studied both in cleared and undisturbed bushland. A sub-type of ACACIA-COMMIPHORA bushland was identified as ACACIA REFICIENS bushland, in which the dominant COMMIPHORA species is C.CAMPESTRIS. Most of the woody species did not have even-aged populations but cohort structures that were skewed towards young individuals. The woody vegetation and the status of soil nutrients were estimated to recover in 15-20 years on Vertic Natrargid soils after total removal of above-ground vegetation

Аннотация: The author discusses the role of protection of individual pine trees that are natural monuments and of the conservation of various types of forest communities with pine as an important component. A list of the individuals protected by the law is presented. Special note was made in the list of trees that are very thick, with a girth of 300-400 cm, that have a collor type of bark peeling, and those that were used as bee-hives. These latter ones are remnants of the intensive apiculture that characterized the early historical period. In the paper the value of forest reserves, seed stands and plus trees is stressed for the conservation of the gene pool within the natural populations of forest trees. In tables and figures the distribution of forest reserves, seed stands and plus trees in Poland is presented.

Аннотация: There is a growing interest in Siberian larch species among researchers and practicioners from abroad, mainly due to their fast growth and excellent wood properties. Some attempts of introducing Siberian larch species as commercial plantations have already been initiated in western countries. However, the knowledge of botanical, ecological and silvicultural features of Siberian larch species is rather poor outside of Russia. Because of its economic importance for Russian forestry the Siberian larch species have been comprehensively studied for many years and many papers as well as a number of monographs have been published, most of them in Russian. The large Russian expertise concerning regionalisation of seed sources, seed crop and quality, seed orchards, seedling production in nurseries and silvicultural practices in commercial plantations beyond their range of natural distribution is presented in this report. May it support foreign foresters in their efforts to enlarge use of Siberian larch species.

Аннотация: Crown stem measurements were taken periodically on selected trees in plantations of red pine (PINUS RESINOSA AIT.) over the period 17 to 37 years from seed. Spacings were 5x5, 7x7, 10x10, and 14x14 feet; some of these represented the original planting interval and others had been achieved by mechanical thinning at the start of the experiment. Little mortality occurred during the 20 years, and individual crown size tended to stabilize, with smaller crowns occurring with closer spacings. Periodic volume growth per acre was strongly correlated with average foliage weight for the period. Thinning was followed by an immediate but temporary increase in foliage ranged from 0.023 to 0.038 cubic feet. Crown length, width, and weight, once stabilized, did not show good correlation with parameters of individual stem growth which are cumulative. Height to crown continued to increase and was strongly correlated with total volume per acre and with the ratio average height average spacing. Breast-height growth of sample trees appeared to be a function of height to crown and foliage weight.

Аннотация: The author has studied the meiosis in the pollen mother cells (PMC) and the pollen formation of Larix decidua Mill. (European larch), L.leptolepis (Sieb et Zucc.) Gord. (Japanese larch) and L. sibirica Ledb. (Siberian larch). Special emphasis was paid to the pattern of development and its implications for pollen formation. Furthermore the possibilities of inducing waxy or waxy-resembling pollen grains were investigated.

Its potential in genetic studies as well as in practical plant breeding is of course realized by you. On the other hand the fundamental role of mutations in evolution and natural variability, and the importance and urgency of investigating means of efficiency inducing mutations and improving methods of using them in plant breeding is not always fully appriciated.

Аннотация: In this study, several alternative phytosanitary treatments for forest tree seeds in general were evaluated and experiments on the long-term storage of acorns were conducted. Seed treatments with low-energy electron beams were carried out on acorns, beechnuts, and seeds of Sitka spruce. This method, the effect of which is restricted to the outer seed parts, is based on the biological effect of ionising radiation and is intended to kill microfungi in the pericarp and testa. The second evaluated phytosanitary measure consisted of the microwave treatment of acorns, which relies on a thermal effect. In addition, the phenomenon of artificially induced frost hardiness of acorns was examined in order to explore the possibility of storing acorns at temperatures lower than the present limit of -3 C.

Аннотация: In this report, pests consifered to be currently most significant in terms of their present or potential economic or environmental impact are described in detail under "Major Forest Insects and Diseases." Regional surveys of pest problems in special situations or of specific pests are summarized under "Special Surveys." The status of many other pests is presented in tabular form by region under title "Other Insects and Diseases.". This section has been expanded in 1983 and 1984 to reflect the importance of these pests. Although they do not, in most cases, have spectacular effects they are important because of their potential for expansion, quarantine considerations, and as vectors and indicators of other problems.

Аннотация: The objective of the Russian-Scandinavian Larch Project is to study the genetics of the four main larch species within Russia, and to make future research on genotype-evironment interaction in other parts of the northern hemisphere possible. The project started in 1994 and the first step, seed collection, is finished now 7 years later. It is a result of co-operation between four different Russian research organisations and two partners in Scandinavia, one in Japan and one in USA.
