Аннотация: Pinus strobus or P. resinosa seedlings, 2 or 3 years old, were illuminated in a closed chamber for 1 hour in the presence of C14O2. This was followed by various periods up to 24 hours under different conditions of light and darkness. Then each seedling was divided into its shoot, stem, and roots, and these were extracted separately with 80% ethanol. The extracts were resolved first on resins into sugar, amino acid, and organic acid fractions and then resolved further by paper chromatography. The C14 content of various fractions and the eluted compounds was determined by plating and counting their aliquots. Ethanol-insoluble residue was oxidized and counted as BaC14O3. 8 hours after administration of the C14O2, 91 to 94% of the total C 14 was found in the ethanol-soluble fractions of shoot, stem, or root. In the shoots sugars were found to represent more than 95% of the ethanol-soluble photosynthate, with sucrose forming three-quarters of it. In stem and roots sucrose represented from 75 to 94% of the translocated photosynthate. Raffinose, glucose, and fructose were present in both stem and root.

Аннотация: Various methods of recording pine twisting rust have been discussed, and attack frequences on 75 progenies of Pinus silvestris plus trees have been noted. Mention has also been made to the possibility of resistance breeding. Acid ether extracts of annual shoots of Pinus silvestris have been examined by various bioassays. Marked differences in the inhibitor effect between extracts from different pine clones have been established. A possible connection between inhibitor content and resistance has been discussed. Reduction in inhibitor content during axial extension and inhibitors in leachates from pine shoots has been connected with Melampsora occurrence. Gel filtration combined with thin layer chromatography has been used for separating tha extract components. Among the inhibitors a number of resin acids have been identified by chemical means

Аннотация: Shoots or twigs are placed in deep-freezes maintained at different temperature. The rate of cooling of the plant tissues depends on the temperature of the deep-freeze. It is more rapid than the rates usually emloyed in freezing tests. The merits and disandvatages of this freezing method are discussed. The degree of injury is determined by a modification of the conductivity method. The procedure has been used for determining changes in frost hardiness of Scots pine from October to May. The values obtained are reproducible, and even small changes in degree of hardiness of very hardy plant tissues may be determined by the method

Аннотация: Results are presented from a study concerning the influence of environmental factors on the formation of summer shoots in young plants of Pinus silvestris L. grown in plastic green houses. A close relationship is found between the studied factors: CO2, water, nutrients and the occurrence of summer shoots. Poor environmental conditions during the first year followed by improved conditions in the following year resulted a great number of plants with summer shoots, whereas favourable conditions during the first year resulted in a low number of plants with summer shoots the following year. According to these results the conclusion is drawn that environmental conditions and especially those of the preceding year have a great influence on the formation of summer shoots and on the shoot growth as well.

Аннотация: The aim of the presnt work has been to find out whether or not it is possible to influence the water ceonomy and the development of frost hardiness of pine seedlings by fertilization with varying amounts of potassium, calcium, and magnesium and whether this can be done while maintaining a maximum or almost maximum growth rate. Simple and rapid methods have been used to allow rapid testing of the three ions in concentrations in shoots and in roots that are associated with rapid growth. There were no experiments with slow-growing seedlings suffering from severe deficiency

Аннотация: The life cycle and shoot-feeding of Tomicus piniperda (L.) and T. minor (Hart.) (Col., Scolytidae) was studied in Simonstorp in southern Sweden (N. 58 degrees 47', E. 16 degrees 10') during the period 1972-1976. Special attention was given to the seasonal feeding actvity in the shoots of Scots pine (Pinus sylveastris L.) This shoot-feeding was related to certain events in the life cycle: flight period, departure of parent beetles from brood logs, length of oviposition period and emergence of the new generation. The spatial distribution of beetles within the pine crown was also studied. The influence of environmental conditions and some population factors upon the shoot-feeding was discussed.

Аннотация: Effect of fertilization on the incidence of summer shoots, nutrient concentration and morphology of bare-root pine seedlings was studied in two nursery experiments during two successive years. In both experiments three levels of top-dressing fertilization were studied, as well autumn fertilization and maintenance dressing before transplanting. Seedlings grown in two nursery experiments were planted and their performance was monitored 7-8 years after planting.
