Аннотация: В монографии основное внимание уделено оценке последствий проведения ядерных взрывов для природных экосистем испытательных Семипалатинского полигона. Обсуждаются вопросы защиты окружающей среды от радиационных воздействий. Проанализированы данные о биологических эффектах, наблюдаемых в популяциях растений и животных с территории полигона, и выявлены основные закономерности реакции биоты на хроническое радиационное воздействие. Дана оценка состояния почвенного покрова в местах проведения ядерных испытаний на площадках "Опытное поле" и "Балапан". Составлены крупномасштабные карты радиоактивного загрязнения, токсичности и деградации почв.

Аннотация: Electronic dispersion and density of states ( DOS) have been calculated for the Hubbard model and the t - J and t - J* models with three-site correlated hopping by the cluster perturbation theory. We have found a rather strong quantitative difference both in dispersion and DOS at all doping for the Hubbard and t - J models at the energy scale omega greater than or similar to t. The three-site correlated hopping addition results in an almost negligible difference for the Hubbard and t - J* models. Close to the Fermi energy, at the scale omega less than or similar to J, the electronic structure of all three models is similar. We have found the line of zeros of the Green function for the t J model that has been previously obtained for the Hubbard model by cellular dynamical mean-field theory calculations.

Аннотация: In recent years, the boreal forest has received increased scientific attention in light of projected climatic warming to boreal regions from increased concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The ecological consequences of such a warming could be significant. However, before the consequences of climatic change can be properly investigated, the ecology of boreal forest tree species must be adequately understood. Though the life-histories of many North American boreal forest tree species are well known, little comparable information has been compiled in English for the major boreal forest tree species of the Soviet Union. In this paper. we present a preliminary description of the silvics of seven of these species - their ranges, optimum climatic and soil conditions, regeneration characteristics, tree growth features, responces to sub-optimal site conditions, and reaction to fire. We hope that this information will provide a useful data base for use in modeling the ecology of these species.

Аннотация: After nine growing seaesons no practical difference in survival and groth of white spruce could be attributed to method of planting in a test of two planting methods that dispose the seedling roots in a horizontal plane close to the soil surface and a conventional one that places the roots in a horizontal plane close to the soil surface and a conventional one that places the roots vertically. Growth and variability in height were found to be related to height of planting stock. Planting stock less than 0.5 feet tall grew poorly on the planting site studied. Research into improved culling and grading procedures for size and quality of spruce planting stock is suggested.

Аннотация: The paper describes a modified intercept-per cent method of preparing yield tables, and shows that intercept-per cent varies with stand age as well as with site. The tables provide number of trees, basal area, average diameter and volume in cubic feet for the merchantable portion of a stand by ten-year age classes. Merchantable volume at 100 years is 2,200 cubic feet on site A, 1,923 cubic feet on site B, 1,523 cubic feet on site F and 1,289 cubic feet on site D.

Аннотация: In recent years there have been many advances towards the practice of forestry in British Columbia. Among these have been attampts at regulating the annual cut in accordance with the principles of sustained yield. This has drawn attention to methods of assessing the growth potentialities of logged lands. This report gives a practical method for estimating the site-quality of logged land in terms of site index and of forest associations, either of which may be of value to the forester. More field data have gone into the preparation of a method for predicting forest associations than into the site-index method, and the former has a higher degree of success in prediction. Four site classes, however, have been predicted in terms of site index as compared to three forest associations. It should be stressed that this method of estimating site-quality, by means of stump diameter-growth measurements, is not an exact one, but merely serves as a rough guide toward the mapping of logged land.

Аннотация: There are two very important problems humanity faces which are tightly bound together: global climate change and anthropogenic pressure. Forests and forest soils represent objects of these impacts. Soils, being a central part of terrestrial ecosystems, reflect not only present environment conditions but also previous ones. Soil is not a living organism, but a medium where organisms live. Transformations of soil differ from plant successions and evolution as well as their buffering capability and tolerance. In turn, the hypothesized global climate change depends mostly on CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and thus on carbon cycling. Soils are regarded to be even a greater sink of CO2 than vegetation (and all living biomass). Soil properties shift affects terrestrial ecosystems in many ways, on a local scale as well as influence to the global climate. There is much data about soil pollution or arable land degradation, but only a few works have been done about forest soils transition under clearcuts or wildfires.
