Аннотация: Анализируются характеристики строения и первичной продуктивности биогеоценозов (экосистем) еловых лесов южной части европейской равнины СССР. Исследования выполнены в плане реализации Международной Биологической Программы и углубленного биогеоценологического изучения живой природы как среды обитания и хозяйственной деятельности человека. Особое внимание уделяется анализу факторов и природных режимов, регулирующий рядовой состав, структуру и первичную продукцию веществ в экосистемах еловых лесов. В заключительной части книги приводятся сведения о численности и активности некоторых групп позвоночных животных. Монография подводит итоги первого этапа исследований как основы для последующего синтеза и построения принципиальных схем функционирования экосистем бореальных лесов.

Although World War II prevented best use of this material, several provenance experiments were planted. Аннотация: When establising young plantations, certain courses are taken which in the future will have a susbstantial influence on the volume and quality production, on the total expenses and the forest rent as well as on stand safety. The type and the quality of stock and the spacing are of particular concern for the artificial regeneration of Norway spruce. By comparing informative results found in literature and in light of the institute's own research projects, this book endeavours to serve as a directive for forest planning and forestry practice

Аннотация: To rationalize thinning in young coniferous stands, thinning systems have been developed in the past few years which permit the use of modern harvesters and logging machines. In the spring of 1973 a thinning experiment was established in the forest district Olpe, to examine the influence of largely mechanical cuttings on the increament of young Norway spruce stands. The paper gives a report of this experiment, and mentions the results of similar thinning experiments in the discussion. In conclusion, with regard to these scientific findings and to the thinning rules of the state forestry administrations, recommendations for the treatment of young spruce stands are given

Аннотация: The hypothesis was tested that red spruce and black spruce are two distinct species which are capable of hybridizing, and that intrigressive hybridization or introgression has occurred since Pleistocene glaciations. Evidence was obtained from the literature regarding F1 hybrids, isolating mechanisms, and the possible evolution of the species. Data are presented concerning morphological variation of seedlings in provenance tests, and of trees in natural stands. Mosr samples from the overlapping range showed a proportion of individuals typical of one species with other individuals showing a degree of resemblance to the other species. In these latter individuals, character assotiation was evident. While the data are not conclusive, they are compatible with the theory of introgression

Аннотация: The static tree pulling method, strength and components of anchorage, structure and dynamics of root systems and the influence of stemreduction strategies on allocation of biomass and wind stability of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) were analyzed. Concluding , that the wind stability is supported by implementing 'the lowest possible stem number in early years and the highest possible stem number in older age", a decreasing thinning intensity with increasing age (from D-Grade (very heavy thinning) to A-Grade (non-thinning) was proposed. The book describes the natural ecological basis for wind resistance of Conifers.

Аннотация: After nine growing seaesons no practical difference in survival and groth of white spruce could be attributed to method of planting in a test of two planting methods that dispose the seedling roots in a horizontal plane close to the soil surface and a conventional one that places the roots in a horizontal plane close to the soil surface and a conventional one that places the roots vertically. Growth and variability in height were found to be related to height of planting stock. Planting stock less than 0.5 feet tall grew poorly on the planting site studied. Research into improved culling and grading procedures for size and quality of spruce planting stock is suggested.

Аннотация: The paper describes a modified intercept-per cent method of preparing yield tables, and shows that intercept-per cent varies with stand age as well as with site. The tables provide number of trees, basal area, average diameter and volume in cubic feet for the merchantable portion of a stand by ten-year age classes. Merchantable volume at 100 years is 2,200 cubic feet on site A, 1,923 cubic feet on site B, 1,523 cubic feet on site F and 1,289 cubic feet on site D.

Аннотация: Some relationships between crown size and stem diameter at breast height having application in silviculture, aerial inventories of forest resources and fire protection, were determined from 48 red spruce and 80 balsam fir growing together in the same stands. For trees of the same d.b.h., spruce crowns vary in width and average slightly wider than fir crowns, lengths are similar for both species, but spruce crowns are much heavier. All relationships examined were highly significant for both species but the strongest correlation was between d.b.h. and crown weight.

Аннотация: This paper describes a long-term study of aboveground phytomass before and after the clearfelling of two Norway spruce stands. The clearfelled areas were treated in different ways:(1) slash was left in situ, as in conventional forestry; (2) slash was removed, as in whole-tree harvesting; and (3) controlled burning was carried out, as was common practice in northern Sweden about 40 Years ago. The phytomass of the field-layer vegetation was determined 1, 4. 10, and 16 years after clearfelling. The phytomass of the ground-layer vegetation was measured one and four years after clearfelling.
