Аннотация: XML is being adapted as a common storage format in scientific data repositories, digital libraries, and on the World Wide Web. As such, there is a need for information retrieval systems that can efficiently and effectively store, search and retrieve information from XML document collections. To evaluate the effectiveness of such systems, test collections are necessary. Such test collections have been built by INEX, the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML retrieval. In this book, we address several fundamental questions surrounding the field of XML information retrieval. In particular, we focus on how information retrieval and database approaches could be combined for effective XML retrieval; how relevance should be defined in XML retrieval; how effectiveness of XML retrieval systems should be evaluated; and how information retrieval from XML document collections could be used in different application scenarios. The analysis presented in the book should be especially useful yo academics and professionals in the information Retrieval and Native XML Database fields, or anyone else who may be interested in the development of future interactive search systems

В частности, мы сосредоточимся на том, как проходит поиск информации, и могут ли применяться подходы, используемые в базах данных, для эффективного XML-поиска; как определить релевантность XML-поиска; как оценить эффективность XML-поисковых систем; и как информация, полученная из коллекции XML-документов, может быть использована в различных приложениях-сценариях. Анализ, представленный в книге, мог бы быть особенно полезен ученым и специалистам в информационно-поисковых системах с поддержкой XML-баз данных, либо всем, кто заинтересован в развитии будущих интерактивных поисковых систем.

Аннотация: This monograph deals with the light reaction pathway in photosynthesis. The photophysico-chemical events are presented in the order of their occurrence, beginning with the collection of sunlight by antenna systems, ending with the reduction of CO to carbohydrates. Relationships between the structural 2 properties and kinetic effects of primary and secondary events spanning time 12 domains in the range 1O- _ls are explored. Photosynthesis is examined in terms of a light-induced redistribution of reaction intermediates common to the biosynthesis and metabolic degradation of carbohydrates. The experimental procedures and results reviewed in the book are repre­ sentative of developments in instrumental methods and conceptual formula­ tions in this area during the past decade. In particular, picosecond spectroscopy, time-resolved and magnetic resonance techniques, along with structural and photoelectrochemical models of photosynthesis, have provided clues for the molecular mechanisms of energy migration from the antenna systems to the reaction centers, and of succeeding stages of photochemical events leading to the carbon-reduction cycle. The preparation of this monograph resulted from the efforts of workers in distantly separated institutions. Аннотация: The paper describes the distribution of acidity in the soil profile, especially in the podzol profile, and gives some data regarding the effect of the storage of the soil samples on acidity, and the differences between the pH-values in water and in KC1. Storage of the samples has generally lowered the acidity, particularly so in strongly podzolized soils. The changes were least in brown earth and in weakly podzolized soil. Research on the distribution of acidity shows that the pH-value first rises (from surface of mineral soil onwards) with increasing depth, reaches a maximum at the lower part of the B-horizon, and thereupon falls, soon to rise to the value which is characteristic of the subsoil in question. In ordinary northern podzol soils, this maximum is found between 25 and 35 cm, and the decrease between 35 and 45 cm. The chemical differentiation of the profile is generally the folowing: the maximum of humus is uppermost, than tha maximum of sesqui-oxides and underneath that of the pH-values. The ph-difference between water and KC1 was least in the B-horizon, and greatest in strongly washed A-horizon and in the subsoil of grass-herb forests.

Аннотация: In this study, several alternative phytosanitary treatments for forest tree seeds in general were evaluated and experiments on the long-term storage of acorns were conducted. Seed treatments with low-energy electron beams were carried out on acorns, beechnuts, and seeds of Sitka spruce. This method, the effect of which is restricted to the outer seed parts, is based on the biological effect of ionising radiation and is intended to kill microfungi in the pericarp and testa. The second evaluated phytosanitary measure consisted of the microwave treatment of acorns, which relies on a thermal effect. In addition, the phenomenon of artificially induced frost hardiness of acorns was examined in order to explore the possibility of storing acorns at temperatures lower than the present limit of -3 C.

Аннотация: Boreal ecosystems contain one-third of the world's forests and stored carbon, but these regions are under increasing threat from both natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Written by leaders from the forefront of private, public and academic sectors, Restoration and Reclamation of Boreal Ecosystems emphasises a broad, conceptual approach to the specific application of empirical research into development planning, restoration and modelling of these ecosystems. The importance of this is highlighted at a time of global climate change, as these ecosystems act as carbon sinks. There is a focus on the reclamation of exploited ecosystems from a holistic standpoint, ranging from environmental and edaphic variables to the restoration of keystone flora. Recent advances in quantification of ecosystem services, such as habitat suitability and carbon storage modelling, are also detailed. The book contains case-studies which address how both historical and novel assemblages can provide ecosystem stability under projected climatic and land-use scenarios.
