Аннотация: An essential aim of the work was to test domestic rye varieties and strains on their resistance behaviour to C. pur. with the help of artificial inoculations. This work was done on the testing grounds of the Federal Biological Institute for Agriculture and Forestry in Brunswick. In the individual test years, although the level of infection was very varied, clear diffrences in levels of susceptibility between the rye species tested could be identified. The native rye species had on average less ergot content than the hybrid varieties.

Аннотация: From the earliest times trees have formed part of man's environment, providing him with sources of raw materials, food and drink. The most useful species have been brought into cultivation and grown as crop plants. By breeding and selection, improved strains have been developed, methods of propagation worked out and, largely by trial and erroer, the most suitable cultural conditions for each species have been dicovered. Such empirical methods of crop improvement have served in the past, now the stage when further major advances in the culture of tree crops will demand a much deeper understanding of the physiology of woody perennial species.Such were the themes discussed at the Second Long Ashton Symposium

Аннотация: Air-borne infection by H. annosum and its control during first thinning were examined in two Scots pine stands and one Norway spruce stand southern Finland. Water suspensions of Phlebiopsis gigantea (two strains) and 20% urea solution were used. The substances were spread on the surface of the stumps during felling using a stump-spraying device fitted to a chain-saw. A total of 501 pine and 278 spruce stumps were investigated.
