Cohomology Theories for Compact Abelian Groups
[Текст] : монография / K.H. Hofmann, P.S. Mostert. - Berlin : VEB DEUTSCHER VERLAG DER WISSENSCHAFTEN, 1973. - 236 с. + List of notation p. 232-234, Subject Index p. 235-236. - With an appendix by E.C. Nummela Bibliogr. p. 229-231 . - 17.82 р.

Аннотация: Of all topological algebraic structures compact topological groups have perheps the richest theory since so many different fields contribute to their study: Analysis enters through the representation theory and harmonic analysis; differential geometry, the theory of real analytic functions and the theory of differential equations come into the play via Lie group theory; point set topology is used in describing the local geometric structure of compact groups via limit spaces ; global topology and the theory of manifolds again play a role through Lie group theory; and, of course, algebra enters through the cohomology and homology theory. A particularly well understood subclass of compact groups is the class of compact abelian groups. An added element of elegance is the duality theory, which stated that the category of compact abelian groups is completely equivalent to the category of (discrete) abelian groups with all arrows reversed. This allows for a virtually complete algebraisation of any question concerning compact abelian groups. The subclass of compact abelian groups is not so special within the category of compact groups as it may seem at first glance. As is very well known, the local geometry structure of a compact group may be extremely complicated, but all local complication happens to be "abelian". All of these features qualify the category of compact abelian groups as a very suitable test category for the applicability of various tools; a tool which does not work rather explicitly in the category of compact abelian groups is not likely tobe very usefulin the more general circumstances of arbitrary compact or even more general topological groups. The present monograph is an essay to test the tools of cohomology on the category of compact abelian groups. The usefulness of cohomology does not need, of course, any corroboration. No comprehensive study of the explicit nature of the cohomology functor on this category has, however, been undertaken untill now. The current treatise attempts to fill this gap.

    Hands
[Текст] : a Pattern Theoretic Study of Biological Shapes. 2 / U. Grenader, Y.% Chow. - New York ; Berlin ; Heidelberg : Springer-Verlag, 1991%. - 128 с. : With 92 illustrations, 43 in Full Color. - (Research Notes in Neural Computing). - 90.00 р.

Аннотация: In this book a global shape model is developed and applied to the analysis of real pictures acquired with a visible light camera under varying conditions of optical degradation. Computational feasibility of the algorithms derived from this model is achieved by analytical means. The aim is to develop methods for image understanding based on structured restoration, for example, automatic detection of abnormalities. We also want to find the limits of applicability of the algorithms. This is done by making the optical degradations more and more severe until the algorithms no longer succeed in their task. This computer experiment in pattern theory is one of several. The others, LEAVES, X-RAYS, and RANGE, are described elsewhere. This book is suitable for an advanced undergraduate or graduate seminar in Pattern Theory (or Pattern Recognition), or as an accompanying book for Applied Probability, Computer Vision, or Pattern Recognition.

    Radiation Effects in Solids
[Текст] : монография. 2 / G.J. Dienes, G.H. Vineyard. - New York ; London : Interscience Publishers, 1957. - 226 с. - (Interscience Monographs in Physics and Astronomy). - Bibliogr. at the end of the chapters. - 2.60 р.

Аннотация: The study of radiation effects in solids is now proceeding more intensively than ever befor, and the subject can be expectedto develop greatly in the next few years. Nevertheless the field has already reached a certain level of maturity, and a very large set of experimental results are at hand, coordinated at least qualitatively by the body of theoretical ideas. It thus seems appropriate to bring out a small volume surveying the subject in its present state. It is not the authors'intension to extoll the accomplishments of the theory unduly. Indeed, we have emphasized its shortcomingsas well as its achievements, and hope that a critcal awareness of limitations of present theoretical pictures will lead most quickly to their improvement. Similarly, in the experimental realm, while summarizing the basic information that has been gathered, we have tried to point out many gaps and to reveal numerous cases where inadequate control of purity, temperature, radiation conditions, and other variables make results difficult to interpret and of uncertain generality. The book is concerned mostly with the physics of radiation effects, not with the chemistry of such effects, and not at all with biological effects. This means that displaced atoms have been given more prominence than ionization, and that organic substances have been given far less space than any other types of solids. It should be also noted that we are primarily concerned with energetic radiation, of x- ray energies and higher, and thus effects of optical, infrared and ultraviolet irradiation are omitted. Although these phenomena(luminescence, photochemistry, etc.) are unquestionably radiation effects, their study goes much farther back, they have been reviewed in many places, and the theoretical ideas involved are sufficiently different from those relevant to high-energy radiation to allow a practical separation. The book deals mainly with fundamentals, and this means that preference is given to simple systems and to irradiationscarried out under controlled and analyzable conditions. At the same time a survey is given of the more striking physical effects arising from irradiations, many of these being observed in complicated situations where theoretical understanding is difficult. It is hoped that the treatment given will be of use to graduate students, to scientists in fields other than radiation effects, and to specialists in radiation effects who desire a broad and integrated review of the fundamentals of their field. The writers are indebted to their colleagues in the Solid State Group at Brookhaven National Laboratory for many helpful discussions, to R.W. Powell and R.A. Meyer for aid with the section on annealing of the Brookhaven Reactor, and to Nrs Alice Whittemore for dedicated assistance in the preparation of manuscript.

The Boltzmann Equation and Its Applications
[Текст] : монография. 67 / Carlo Cercignani. - New York ; Berlin ; Heidelberg : Springer-Verlag, 1988. - 455 с. : With 42 illustrations. - (Applied Mathematical Sciences). - Bibliogr. at the end of the chapters. - 1.20 р.

Аннотация: Statistical mechanics may be naturally divided into two branches, one dealing with the equilibrium systems, the other with nonequilibrium systems. The equilibrium properties of macroscopic systems are defined in principle by suitable averages in well-defined Gibb's ensembles. This provides a framework for both qualitative understanding and quantitative approximations to equilibrium behaviour. Nonequilibrium phenomena are much less understood at the present time. A notable exception is offered by the case of dilute gases. Here are basic equation was established by Ludwig Boltzmann in 1872.The Boltzmann equation still forms the basis for the kinetic theory of gases and has proved fruitfull not only for a study of the classical gases Boltzmann had in mind but also, properly generalized, for studying electron transport in solids and platsmas, neutron transport in nuclear reactors, phonon transport in superfluids, and radiative transfer in planetaryand stellar atmospheres. Research in both the new fields and the old one has undergone a considerable advance in last thirty years. In the last ten years, a new wave of interest has surrounded the Boltzmann equation, stemming from its unique role in the theory of time-dependent phenomena in large systems. In fact, the Boltzmann equation appears as a prototype of a reduced description taking into account only partial information about the underlying microscopic state (fully described by the coordinate and the momenta of all the molecules), but nevertheless undergoing an autonomous time evolution. Thus the problem of the rigorous derivation of the Boltzmann equation from the microscopic description has attracted a certain amount of interest among physicists and mathematicians. This, in turn, has revived the interest in the theory of existence and uniqueness of the solutionsof the Boltzmann equation, since this problem has proved to be intimately tied with the previous one. This justifies the present book (which tries to present a unified approach to the problems arising in different fields mentioned above) by exploiting the similarities whenever they exist and underlining the differences when necessary. The main line of exposition, however, is tied to the classical equation established by Boltzmann, and hence the detailed description of some applications almost exclusively refer to monatomic neutral gases. Appropriate references are given, however, to papers dealing with similar problems arising in other fields, with particular concern for neutron transport, gas mixtures, and polyatomic gases. The material dealing with the basic properties and applications known before 1975 was covered in the previous book by the author; thus, it was natural to incorporate in the present book the material of the first seven chapters of that book. This material is updated in an extensive Appendix, coveringthe developments from 1975 to 1987. But the main feature of the book is Chapter VIII, completely rewritten and covering the important studies resulting from new mathematical approaches to the old problem of existence and uniqueness, and the new once tied up with the question of validity. There is still no satisfactory prooffor existence of solutions under general reasonable initial conditions. The material presented here indicates, however, that a great deal of progress has been achievedin recent times. There is no doubt that the better understanding resulting from this progress will be essential to the further penetration to be expectedin the next few years. It is hoped that the book will be usefull as a textbook for an advanced course in kinetic theory and as a reference for mathematicians, physicists, and engineers interested in the kinetic theory of gases and its applications.

Robustness of Statistical Methods and nonparametric Statiatics
[Текст] : proc. of a conf. held on that topics at Schwerin, May 29 - June 4, 1983 / Edited by Dieter Rasch and Moti Lal Tiku. - Berlin : Deutscher Verlag der Wissenschaften, 1984. - 172 с. - 17.01 р.

Аннотация: This volume contains most of the invited and contributed papers presented at the Conference on Robustness of Statistical Methods and Nonparametric Statistics held in the castle of Schwerin, Mai 29 - June 4 1983. This conference was organized by the Mathematical Society of the GDR in cooperation with the Society of Physical and Mathematical Biology of the GDR, the GDR-Region of the International Biometric Society and the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR. All papers included were thoroughly reviewed by scientist listed under the heading "Editorial Collaboratories". Some contributios, we are sorry to report, were not recommended for publication by the reviewers and do not appear in these proceedings. The editors thank the reviewers for their valuable comments and suggestions. The conference was organized by a Programme Committee, its chairman was Prof. Dr. Dieter Rasch (Research Centre of Animal Production, Dummerstorf-Rostock). The members of the Programme Committee were Prof. Dr. Johannes Adam (Martin-Luther-University Halle), Prof. Dr. Heinz Ahrens (Academy of Sciences of the GDR, Berlin), Doz. Dr. Jana Jureckova (Charles University Praha), Prof. Dr. Moti Lal Tiku (McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario). The aim of the conference was to discuss several aspects of robustness but mainly to present new results regurding the robustness of classicalstatistical methods especially tests, confidence estimations, and selection procedures, and to compare their perfomance with nonparametric procrdures. Robustness in this sense is understood as intensitivity against violation of the normal assumption. Three approaches can be found: analytical approach for continuous distributions; combinatorial approach for k-point distributions; simulations in a system of distributions (Pearson system, Fleishmann system). The simulation studies were well designed and some papers deal with testing the pseudo-random number generators used. Most of the results have not been published elsewhere and appear in these proceeding for the first time. Some papers deal with the robustness issues on the lines of Huber although the main emphasis of the conference was to study robustness in the Pearson framework. Some papers deal with robust experimental designs and some with nonparametric methods (classification, estimations, etc.).
