Аннотация: The handbook contains a description of and methodological hints concerning basic procedures for the handling and interpretation of vibrational spectra. All commonly-used definitions, mathematical relationships, tables of constants, conversion factors and computation schemes for numerical treatment of experimental values have been collectedThe book is supplemented with FORTRAN programs for the computer solution of many problems in molecular spectroscopy. The handbook has been written for graduate chemists (and also high-school graduated chemists), who interpret IR and Raman spectra obtained on their samples. The subject matter is thus limited only to those fields of experimental techniques which are reflected in the quality of the spectra and must be consideredin the handling and analysis of spectra. Other problems, e.g. the construction of commercial spectrometers and calculations of force constants, have not been treated in the book. The material contained in the handbook should suffice for independent handling of vibrational spectra in organic chemistry (and possibly also inorganic and macromolecular chemistry).

Аннотация: The subject of the book is the solution of nonstiff ordinary differential equatiions. The first chapter describes the historical development of the classical theory of differential eqautiions from Newton and Leibniz to limit cycles and strange attractors. In a second chapter one-step methods are considered. A modern treatment of Runge-Kutta methods, continuous methods for dense output, graphics and delay differential equations is given. Also included are extrapolation methods and direct methods for second order differential equations. The third chapter begins with classical theory of multistep methods, treats variable step size and Nordsieck methods and their numerical implementation, and concludes with the theory of general linear methods. Many applications from physics, chemistry, biology and astronomy together with computer programs and numerical comparisons are presented.

Аннотация: The study of radiation effects in solids is now proceeding more intensively than ever befor, and the subject can be expectedto develop greatly in the next few years. Nevertheless the field has already reached a certain level of maturity, and a very large set of experimental results are at hand, coordinated at least qualitatively by the body of theoretical ideas. It thus seems appropriate to bring out a small volume surveying the subject in its present state. It is not the authors'intension to extoll the accomplishments of the theory unduly. Indeed, we have emphasized its shortcomingsas well as its achievements, and hope that a critcal awareness of limitations of present theoretical pictures will lead most quickly to their improvement. Similarly, in the experimental realm, while summarizing the basic information that has been gathered, we have tried to point out many gaps and to reveal numerous cases where inadequate control of purity, temperature, radiation conditions, and other variables make results difficult to interpret and of uncertain generality. The book is concerned mostly with the physics of radiation effects, not with the chemistry of such effects, and not at all with biological effects. This means that displaced atoms have been given more prominence than ionization, and that organic substances have been given far less space than any other types of solids. It should be also noted that we are primarily concerned with energetic radiation, of x- ray energies and higher, and thus effects of optical, infrared and ultraviolet irradiation are omitted. Although these phenomena(luminescence, photochemistry, etc.) are unquestionably radiation effects, their study goes much farther back, they have been reviewed in many places, and the theoretical ideas involved are sufficiently different from those relevant to high-energy radiation to allow a practical separation. The book deals mainly with fundamentals, and this means that preference is given to simple systems and to irradiationscarried out under controlled and analyzable conditions. At the same time a survey is given of the more striking physical effects arising from irradiations, many of these being observed in complicated situations where theoretical understanding is difficult. It is hoped that the treatment given will be of use to graduate students, to scientists in fields other than radiation effects, and to specialists in radiation effects who desire a broad and integrated review of the fundamentals of their field. The writers are indebted to their colleagues in the Solid State Group at Brookhaven National Laboratory for many helpful discussions, to R.W. Powell and R.A. Meyer for aid with the section on annealing of the Brookhaven Reactor, and to Nrs Alice Whittemore for dedicated assistance in the preparation of manuscript.

Аннотация: The overwhelming focus in this volume of the treatise is on linear waves in homogeneous and stratified lakes on the rotating Earth. It comprises 12 chapters, starting with rotating linear shallow-water waves and demonstrating their classification into gravity and Rossby waves for homogeneous and stratified water bodies. This leads naturally to the analysis of gravity waves in unbounded, semi-bounded and bounded domains of constant depth: Kelvin, inertial and Poincaré waves, reflection of such waves at the end of a gulf and their description in sealed basins as so-called ‘inertial waves proper’. The particular application to gravity waves in circular and elliptical basins of constant depth then builds further confidence towards the treatment of barotropic and baroclinic basin wide wave dynamics affected by the rotation of the Earth. The classical analytical approach to the baroclinic motion in lakes is done using the two layer approximation. Recent observations have focused on higher order baroclinicity, a topic dealt with in two chapters. Whole lake responses are illustrated in barotropic and baroclinic wave analyses in Lake Onega and Lake Lugano, respectively, with detailed comparisons of field data. The final four chapters are then devoted to a detailed presentation of topographic Rossby waves and the generalized Chrystal equations and their identification by field observations.

Аннотация: Electron density is one of the fundamental concepts underlying modern chemistry and one of the key determinants of molecular structure and stability. It is also the basic variable of density functional theory, which has made possible, in recent years, the application of the mathematical theory of quantum physics to chemical and biological systems. With an equal emphasis on computational and philosophical questions, A Matter of Density: Exploring the Electron Density Concept in the Chemical, Biological, and Materials Sciences addresses the foundations, analysis, and applications of this pivotal chemical concept. The first part of the book presents a coherent and logically connected treatment of the theoretical foundations of the electron density concept. Discussion includes the use of probabilities in statistical physics; the origins of quantum mechanics; the philosophical questions at the heart of quantum theory, like quantum entanglement; and methods for the experimental determination of electron density distributions. The remainder of the book deals with applications of the electron density concept in the chemical, biological, and materials sciences. Contributors offer insights on how a deep understanding of the origins of chemical reactivity can be gleaned from the concepts of density functional theory. Also discussed are the applications of electron density in molecular similarity analysis and electron density-derived molecular descriptors, such as electrostatic potentials and local ionization energies. This section concludes with some applications of modern density functional theory to surfaces and interfaces.

Описаны методы формирования, обработки и регистрации электромагнитных полей различных спектральных диапазонов и их воздействие на конденсированные среды. Сборник предназначен для научных работников, инженеров, аспирантов и студентов старших курсов, специализирующихся в области физики высоких плотностей энергии, электродинамики, квантовой электроники и лазерной физики.
Труды ИОФАН представляют собой тематические сборники, в которых публикуются результаты научных исследований сотрудников института по различным проблемам современной физики. Труды ИОФАН были основаны в 1986 г. по инициативе директора института академика А.М. Прохорова, главного редактора этого издания. С 2002 г. главным редактором Трудов ИОФАН является академик РАН И.А. Щербаков. С1986 по 1994 г.г. Труды ИОФАН издавались издательством "Наука", с 1995 по 2000 г.г. издательством "Наука-Физматлит", а затем снова издательством "Наука". К настоящему времени издано 70 томов.
