greenhouse -- photomicrographs -- pachytene

Аннотация: Meiosis in PMC of aspen in twigs allowed to develop in greenhouse, was studied and demonstarted by photomicrographs. During the conditions prevailing in the greenhouse the development from pachytene to microspores took plaxce within around 30 hours. Pachytene was shown to be the longest lasting stage followed by metaphase I, diplotene and interphase. The development starts in the base of the catkin and proceeds upwards. Several meiotic stages might simultaneously be found in individual flowers

shoots -- twigs -- temperature -- method -- freezing tests

Аннотация: Shoots or twigs are placed in deep-freezes maintained at different temperature. The rate of cooling of the plant tissues depends on the temperature of the deep-freeze. It is more rapid than the rates usually emloyed in freezing tests. The merits and disandvatages of this freezing method are discussed. The degree of injury is determined by a modification of the conductivity method. The procedure has been used for determining changes in frost hardiness of Scots pine from October to May. The values obtained are reproducible, and even small changes in degree of hardiness of very hardy plant tissues may be determined by the method

moose browsing -- feeding behaviour -- forest plantations -- main stem damage -- Pinus sylvestris

Аннотация: Factors affecting moose browsing in young Scots pine stands was studied in southern Finland. A total of 118 young stands, including stands forming a high density winter range, were inspected in 1988-89. The number of browsed twigs on the different tree species making up the stands emphasized the importance of food resource availability on moose feeding. On the high density winter range, pubescent birch and Scots pine were the main tree species browsed upon. Main stem damages of pine commonly occurred on the high density winter range, when the density of birch was over 6500 saplings/ha. As the height relationship between birch and pine increased, the degree of damage increased significantly. A low density of Scots pine stands easily leads to serious damage in respect to acceptable stand density recommendations.

Аннотация: The purpose of the book is to afford an opportunity for a more intelligent acquaintance with American trees, native and naturalized. the pictures upon the plates have in all cases been photographed direct from nature, and have been brought together on such a way that the non-botanical reader can recognize at a glance either the whole tree or the leaves, flowers, fruits, or winter twigs, and thus be able ti identify with ease and certainty any unknown tree to which his attention may be called. In the discussion of the text especial attention has been given to the distinguishing character of the various species, as well as to the more interesting phases of the yearly cycle of each, and the special values of each for ornamental planting. This fifth edition carries special introductory material telling how the different trees change in summer, autumn, winter and spring, why they drop their leaves, how they prepare their flower and leaf buds for new growth.
