Аннотация: A Conference on Computational Techniques for Ordinary Differential Equations was held under the auspices of The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications at the University of Manchester from 18th to 20th December, 1978. It brought together approximately 120 participants from countries all over the world. The Conference was composed of 11 invited lectures, two one-hour poster sessions and a one-hour discussion period. For the poster sessions there were 22 presentations on the variety of theoretical, practical and algorithmic topics in the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. These sessions were considered a great success of all concerned. In the discussion period, chaired by J. Walsh of the University of Manchester, a number of the invited speakers formed a panel and a lively debate on current research problems ensued. Here, as in the poster sessions, much of the success of the venture was due to the involvement of the whole body of the participants. This volume contains, in complete form, the papers given by the 10 invited speakers, with two papers contributed by L.F. Shampine. The first seven are concerned with theoretical and algorithmic aspects of the solution of initial value problems and the remaining four chapters with the derivation, analysis and solution of boundary value problems. The aim of the organizers of the conference was to provide a balanced mixture of expository and research papers and this balance is reflected in the papers gathered together in this volume.

Аннотация: Данный аналитический обзор посвящен выявлению глубинных связей между экологией и этикой общества. В современной литературе отмечается, что назревает серьезная подвижка общественного сознания в рамках экологической парадигмы с учетом этической системы ценностей. Более того, обнаруживается, что особенно-сти этой системы во многом определяют характер цивилизационных перемен в обществе. Между разумом и нравственностью уже давно образовался опасный провал. Разум скрытым способом пытается установить господство над природой. И не только над природой, но и над самим человеком, что обнаруживается в при-вычном понятии наемного труда. В аналитическом обзоре прослеживаются новые ориентиры цивилизационных перемен, учитывающих базисный характер законов этики. При этом не только выявляются экологические основания нравственности, но и дается общее описание новой философии хозяйства, сохраняющего как при-роду, так и само общество. Обзор рассчитан на широкий круг читателей, интересующихся причинами экологического кризиса, способами преодоления серьезных негативных явлений в современном обществе. The analytical review is devoted to revealing deep connections between ecology and society ethics. The current literature indicates that serious progress is brewing in social consciousness within the ecological paradigm, taking into account the ethical value sys-tem. Moreover, it is found that the characteristics of this system largely determine the nature of civilizational changes in society. Between reason and morality long ago has formed a dangerous failure. Mind in hidden way is trying to dominate nature. And not only over nature but over man himself, that is found in the conventional concept of wage labor. The analytical review shows the new orientation of civilizational changes, taking into account the basic nature of the ethics laws. Not only the environmental foundation of morality are identified, but also a general description of a new philosophy of manage-ment, preserving both nature and society itself is given.

Trudy Matematicheskogo Instituta imeni V.A. Steklova is a series founded in 1931. It is published quarterly. Each issue contains a collection of articles pertaining to one or several related topics. The authors of a large part of papers are staff members of the Steklov Mathematical Institute RAS. Along with the Editorial Board, each issue has its own invited editor(s) who arrange the peer review of papers for the issue. Trudy Matematicheskogo Instituta imeni V.A. Steklova also publishes monographs on topical problems in mathematics.
В монографии с единой точки зрения рассматривается широкий круг вопросов теории линейных дифференциальных уравнений в частных производных. Исследуется методика сведения задачи к модельному дифференциально-операторному уравнению специальной простой структуры. Сравниваются классические и неклассические уравнения и задачи. Рассматриваются спектральные характеристики и свойства обобщенных решений для уравнений, меняющих тип, вырождающихся, имеющих разрывные коэффициенты, содержащих малый параметр. Значительное внимание уделяется проблемам общей теории граничных задач. Приводятся необходимые сведения из функционального анализа и спектральной теории операторов. Для специалистов по математической физике, функциональному анализу, прикладной математике, студентов старших курсов и аспирантов соответствующих специальностей.

Аннотация: The author discusses the role of protection of individual pine trees that are natural monuments and of the conservation of various types of forest communities with pine as an important component. A list of the individuals protected by the law is presented. Special note was made in the list of trees that are very thick, with a girth of 300-400 cm, that have a collor type of bark peeling, and those that were used as bee-hives. These latter ones are remnants of the intensive apiculture that characterized the early historical period. In the paper the value of forest reserves, seed stands and plus trees is stressed for the conservation of the gene pool within the natural populations of forest trees. In tables and figures the distribution of forest reserves, seed stands and plus trees in Poland is presented.

Аннотация: In recent years there have been many advances towards the practice of forestry in British Columbia. Among these have been attampts at regulating the annual cut in accordance with the principles of sustained yield. This has drawn attention to methods of assessing the growth potentialities of logged lands. This report gives a practical method for estimating the site-quality of logged land in terms of site index and of forest associations, either of which may be of value to the forester. More field data have gone into the preparation of a method for predicting forest associations than into the site-index method, and the former has a higher degree of success in prediction. Four site classes, however, have been predicted in terms of site index as compared to three forest associations. It should be stressed that this method of estimating site-quality, by means of stump diameter-growth measurements, is not an exact one, but merely serves as a rough guide toward the mapping of logged land.

Аннотация: The subject is introduced with a reference to the employment of forest inventories in Canadafor the collection of important data on the forest resources, including information for use in forest management. It is stated that from an operational point of view the most important development in forest inventories in Canada during recent years has been the Federal-Provincial Forestry Agreements entered into initially in 1951. The special value of aerial photography, and advances made in its use in forestry, are emphasized. An indication of the dependence of forest inventories on surveying and mapping and of the construction and use of forest maps is provided. Photointerpretation for forestry purposes, including the determination of tree heights and the density of the forest stand, and recognition of tree species, is mentioned. In this connection the possibilities for special aerial photography are recognized. The approach to forest inventories through stratification and sampling is referred to, as are various sampling methods. Also stand volume tables and tree volume tables, based on variables ascertainable from the aerial photographs, are mentioned. Reference is made to current investigations in the use of large-scale aerial photographs for sampling purposes.

In this connection, use-value and value fulfil their specific task and have to be separated from each other. Exemplified by the recreation function of the forests possibilities for the determination of their use-value and of its combination with expenditure index figures by means of analyses of use-value and costs are outlined. In this way, not easily quantifiable effects can be made aceessible to economic analyses in compliance with our present level of knowledge.
