Interpretation and Processing of Vibrational Spectra
[Текст] : монография / Milan Horak, Antonin Vitek. - Chichester ; New York ; Brisbane : John Wiley & Sons, 1978%. - 414 с. - 6.35 р.

Аннотация: The handbook contains a description of and methodological hints concerning basic procedures for the handling and interpretation of vibrational spectra. All commonly-used definitions, mathematical relationships, tables of constants, conversion factors and computation schemes for numerical treatment of experimental values have been collectedThe book is supplemented with FORTRAN programs for the computer solution of many problems in molecular spectroscopy. The handbook has been written for graduate chemists (and also high-school graduated chemists), who interpret IR and Raman spectra obtained on their samples. The subject matter is thus limited only to those fields of experimental techniques which are reflected in the quality of the spectra and must be consideredin the handling and analysis of spectra. Other problems, e.g. the construction of commercial spectrometers and calculations of force constants, have not been treated in the book. The material contained in the handbook should suffice for independent handling of vibrational spectra in organic chemistry (and possibly also inorganic and macromolecular chemistry).

Аннотация: Forestry has been defined as a science, but it is a combination of many sciences such as botany, biology, physics, and mathematics. It has been defined also as an art (the application of these sciences). The sciences are fundamentals upon which the art is based. Forestry includes the study of these sciences and their application, which is the art. Forestry may be simply defined as the science and art of managing forests so that they yield continuously their maximum of wood products, values, and influences

Аннотация: The present knowledge on the variation of wood density of beech and it's control is incomplete and contradictory inspite of a large number of investigations. This has been explained on one hand by the nature of this variation, on the other hand by inadequate methods and insufficient sample sizes. The systematic variation of wood properties within the stems and the use of frequency distributions of values of wood density have been discussed at some length.

Аннотация: Solar radiation was measured during three months in the summer of 1961 by means of Bellani pyranometers below the canopy of three balsam fir stands, one unthinned and two recently thinned, in Quebec. Observations were made at three randomly selected stations representing average values at each plot. Radiation available below canopy was related to physical dimensions of stands. The average solar radiation beneath fir canopies showed values of 6,8, and 10 per cent of that in the open for stands of 7,600, 5,900, and 4,489 inches of stem density, respectively. Variations in the amount of solar radiation in the open did not change the average percentage of open radiation in the stands. However, with increasing amounts of radiation in the open the scatter of values around the mean percentage of open radiation decreased. It was estimated that thinnings that removed 12 and 36 per cent of the original stand basal area had the immediate effect of increasing the radiation intensity by 25 and 50 per cent.

Аннотация: The book presents the principal schemes of the rhythmic variability of coniferous growth in the upper and northern limits in Eurasia in the form of generalized series for 400 and 500 years accordingly. A possibility of using the dendroindicator information for quantitative values of the influence of natural processes (fluctuating climate, mountain glaciation, volcanism, consequences of Tungus catastrophe, and others) and industrial waste on tree growth is examined. An interdependence is revealed concerning the tree growth anomalies distribution at the Extreme North of Eurasia, Scandinavia, Alaska, and Labrador with regards to changes of atmosphere circulation, fields of temperature anomalies, iciness of the Baltic Sea, Arctic Ocean, and geomagnetic and solar activity. The book is intended for geobotanists, foresters, biogeographers, climatologists, ecologists, dendrochronologists.

Аннотация: The paper describes the distribution of acidity in the soil profile, especially in the podzol profile, and gives some data regarding the effect of the storage of the soil samples on acidity, and the differences between the pH-values in water and in KC1. Storage of the samples has generally lowered the acidity, particularly so in strongly podzolized soils. The changes were least in brown earth and in weakly podzolized soil. Research on the distribution of acidity shows that the pH-value first rises (from surface of mineral soil onwards) with increasing depth, reaches a maximum at the lower part of the B-horizon, and thereupon falls, soon to rise to the value which is characteristic of the subsoil in question. In ordinary northern podzol soils, this maximum is found between 25 and 35 cm, and the decrease between 35 and 45 cm. The chemical differentiation of the profile is generally the folowing: the maximum of humus is uppermost, than tha maximum of sesqui-oxides and underneath that of the pH-values. The ph-difference between water and KC1 was least in the B-horizon, and greatest in strongly washed A-horizon and in the subsoil of grass-herb forests.

Аннотация: Seasonal fluctuations of humus pH of three commonly occurring forest soils in Quebec were assessed to determine which of four different methods was best suited for comparisons of pH among sites. Seasonal variations of 1.1 to 1.3 units were observed on all soil types tested. Humus pH was highest in midsummer and decreased as winter approached. Different pH values were obtained from the same time by the different methods used. Reproducibility of pH measurements is briefly discussed.

Аннотация: Sustainable forest management is one of the most important contributions that the forestry sector can make to development. The maintenance of biological diversity at the ecosystem, species and intra-specific levels is an integral part of sustainable forest management, and is complementary to, and compatible with, the maintenance and enhancement of the productive and protective values of the forests. In this issue, management objectives should go beyond preserving existing genes, individuals, populations, species and ecosystems: the aim must be to conserve and enhance the evolutionary potential of the forests, to ensure their continued value to mankind in the face of changing human needs and to help buffer them against environmental change.

Аннотация: Biomass burning has become recognized as a key element of global change. Best estimates of current and past emissions suggest fire now profoundly affects atmospheric chemistry, the carbon cycle, and climate and may have done so for millions of years. Literature values place carbon sequestration during biomass burning in excess of 20% of the total anthropogenic C releases to the atmosphere, which, falling oxidative losses, would tie up the globe's surface C in less than 106 yr. And the relative importance of biomass burning may have been greater in the past, before large increases in fossil fuel combustion. The potential importance of these burning rates for biodiversity, C and O cycles, air quality, and climate have impressed a diverse community of ecologists and atmospheric chemists and served as a theme for a recent Dahlem workshop some of us organized on biomass burning.

Аннотация: The book includes several case studies that examine the role of ecosystem management in well-known examples such as the Adirondacks and the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. The authors emphasize that human values play a large role in making natural resource management decisions and suggest that ecosystem management be used as a tool which highlights the ecological consequences of these decisions. The book explores the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functional attributes, with the goal of understanding potential conflicts between managing for biodiversity and managing ecosystems. It concludes with innovative approaches that can be developed and incorporated into any frameework for ecosystem management. This book will be of interest to natural resource managers responsible for developing management systems to sustain terrestrial ecosystems, to graduate students studying ecosystems, and to scientists interested in developing better tools for understanding the factors controlling ecosystem structure and function as well as assessing the risk of damage to ecological systems from perturbation.

Аннотация: Modelling is an important tool for understanding the complexity of forest ecosystems and the variety of interactions of ecosystem components, processes and values. This book describes the hybrid approach to modelling forest ecosystems and their possible response to natural and management-induced disturbance. The book describes the FORECAST family of ecosystem management models at three different spatial scales (tree, stand and landscape), and compares them with alternative models at these three spatial scales. The book will help forest managers to understand what to expect from ecosystem-based forest models; serve as a tool for use in teaching about sustainability, scenario analysis and value trade-offs in natural resources management; and assist policy makers, managers and researches working in assessment of sustainable forest management and ecosystem management. Several real-life examples of using the FORECAST family of models in forest management and other applications are presented from countries including Canada, China, Spain and the USA, to illustrate the concepts described in the text. The book also demonstrates how these models can be extended for scenario and value trade-off analysis through visualization and educational or management games.

Аннотация: This paper provides a water-balance sheet for the University of Toronto forest in Haliburton County, Ontario, calculated from climatic data. It presents computations of the average monthly water balance of the area, the monthly values for the 1952-57 period, and daily values for a selected six-month period in 1957, based on a selected soil. Moisture conditions in a second, drier soil are considered in the daily computatiions, which required the development of a modified computation method. The methods and results are discussed and compared. Streamflow figers actually measured for the Black River, in which watershed part of the forest lies, and snow-pack figures from the Gull River watershed are compared with computed figures as a check on the validity of the water-balance computations.
