larch -- variability -- hybridization -- distribution

Аннотация: There is a growing interest in Siberian larch species among researchers and practicioners from abroad, mainly due to their fast growth and excellent wood properties. Some attempts of introducing Siberian larch species as commercial plantations have already been initiated in western countries. However, the knowledge of botanical, ecological and silvicultural features of Siberian larch species is rather poor outside of Russia. Because of its economic importance for Russian forestry the Siberian larch species have been comprehensively studied for many years and many papers as well as a number of monographs have been published, most of them in Russian. The large Russian expertise concerning regionalisation of seed sources, seed crop and quality, seed orchards, seedling production in nurseries and silvicultural practices in commercial plantations beyond their range of natural distribution is presented in this report. May it support foreign foresters in their efforts to enlarge use of Siberian larch species.

Аннотация: After nine growing seaesons no practical difference in survival and groth of white spruce could be attributed to method of planting in a test of two planting methods that dispose the seedling roots in a horizontal plane close to the soil surface and a conventional one that places the roots in a horizontal plane close to the soil surface and a conventional one that places the roots vertically. Growth and variability in height were found to be related to height of planting stock. Planting stock less than 0.5 feet tall grew poorly on the planting site studied. Research into improved culling and grading procedures for size and quality of spruce planting stock is suggested.

Аннотация: The book presents the principal schemes of the rhythmic variability of coniferous growth in the upper and northern limits in Eurasia in the form of generalized series for 400 and 500 years accordingly. A possibility of using the dendroindicator information for quantitative values of the influence of natural processes (fluctuating climate, mountain glaciation, volcanism, consequences of Tungus catastrophe, and others) and industrial waste on tree growth is examined. An interdependence is revealed concerning the tree growth anomalies distribution at the Extreme North of Eurasia, Scandinavia, Alaska, and Labrador with regards to changes of atmosphere circulation, fields of temperature anomalies, iciness of the Baltic Sea, Arctic Ocean, and geomagnetic and solar activity. The book is intended for geobotanists, foresters, biogeographers, climatologists, ecologists, dendrochronologists.

Аннотация: Induced mutations is an important task. The use of induced mutations is a relatively new and somewhat sophisticated technique in plant breeding. Its potential in genetic studies as well as in practical plant breeding is of course realized by you. On the other hand the fundamental role of mutations in evolution and natural variability, and the importance and urgency of investigating means of efficiency inducing mutations and improving methods of using them in plant breeding is not always fully appriciated.

The most important applications are to animal and plant breeding, to eugenics, and to interpretation of a phase of evolution.

Аннотация: The book is concerned first with the relations of gene to zygote frequencies in various genetic systems. A great deal of attention is paid to modes of change of gene frequencies, classified into systematic and random processes. The joint effects of these processes are also gone into in various ways. Path analysis, a method for dealing quantitatively with any postulated network of linear relations among variables, was discussed at considerable length in volume 1 and plays a central role in volume 2, especially in dealing with inbreeding, assortative mating, and other aspects of population structure. The deals with the analysis of phenotypic variability, first where locus effects are additive and second where there are interactions systems.

Аннотация: Regional comparisons between ecosystems on different continents can be a powerful tool for developing a better understanding of the ways in which ecosystems respond to global change. Ecosystem structure and function are affected by factors such as weather and climate patterns and land-ocean and land-atmosphere interactions. Interactions between ecozones and their environments requires large study areas to separate the effects of regional patterns from local variability. This book presents current research on forest and river ecology, and compares ecosystems and their dominant controls between the Pacific Northwest and those in comparable areas of South America. This book will be of interest to ecologists, biologists, professional foresters, climatologists, and land and resource managers.

Аннотация: The samples were analysed for N, P, K and loss on ignition, and the values obtained were expressed both as percentages and per unit area. The conclusion to be drawn from the results is to obtain good precision in analytical values, it is necessary to take a greater number of samples when the results are expressed in weight per unit area than when they are expressed in percentages by weight. As a rule, it is necessary to use samples from at least 10-15 points (Often more) - aggregated to a composite sample - to depress the coefficient of variation below 10 per cent for the values per unit area of the studied elements. The paper also contains tables showing the distributuin of these elements in the profiles examined
