The present publication is a welcome contribution of the followup to UNCED. By focusing on a specific problem, it avoids the pitfall of undue generalization and provides the basis for fruitful discussion between natural scientists, social scientists, and policymakers. To choose as the area of concertration a particular scale also helped to produce meaningful discussion likely to lead to action. In both the natural and the social sciences, the question of scale is of keyimportance as different types of phenomena occur at different scales and different explanatory laws are formulated at these separate scales. Political structures and procedures also differ widely at national, regional, and global scales. The regional scale poses many problems for all the groups interested in global warming. The regional effects of the increase in greenhouse gases are known with less certainty than the global effects. The suitability of the present regional organizations, established and designed on the basis of other economic and political priorities, to deal with problems of environment and development has to be carefylly evaluated and some adaptations may be necessary. The present publication contains an important review both of these general problems and of specific problems related to freshwater resources and to marine resources. It provides an excellent starting point for further work on these important topics. The organizers and authors are to be congratulated on what has been achieved.

boreal forests -- warming -- sustainable forestry -- regeneration

Аннотация: In recent years, boreal forests have attrached world attention to the problem of global warming. The boreal forests on the Siberian continent occupy about 20 percentage of world's forested area and 15-20 percentage of its growing stock. Because of the vital importance of the boreal forest ecosystem for international timber resources and the global environment, the seminar discussed forest management and sustainable forestry, forest regeneration and biological diversity, ,environmentl changes and its effect. Everyone present gave us their scientific works and many opinions were exchanged among participants about the topics in our research field of the forestry and its biology, particularly on the Siberian taiga

Аннотация: The potential role of the Siberian permafrost area on global warming, especially on carbon dioxide budget and release of methane, is presently one of the most urging problems of the world. In this regard, our cooperation between Japan and Russia that started in 1992 belongs to a work of pioneers. The joint effort has been organized with several different budget programs and without any specific leadership, as in the case inthe previous years. It started as exchange of information and discussion of field schedule and instruments. Mutual agreement of field transportation followed. Results of our research programs have been reported at the present symposium; most of them are still under investigation, and their results being preliminary. Purpose of this volume is information exchange, not reporting of the final results

boreal forests -- tree species

Аннотация: In recent years, the boreal forest has received increased scientific attention in light of projected climatic warming to boreal regions from increased concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The ecological consequences of such a warming could be significant. However, before the consequences of climatic change can be properly investigated, the ecology of boreal forest tree species must be adequately understood. Though the life-histories of many North American boreal forest tree species are well known, little comparable information has been compiled in English for the major boreal forest tree species of the Soviet Union. In this paper. we present a preliminary description of the silvics of seven of these species - their ranges, optimum climatic and soil conditions, regeneration characteristics, tree growth features, responces to sub-optimal site conditions, and reaction to fire. We hope that this information will provide a useful data base for use in modeling the ecology of these species.

Аннотация: The book aims to bring the problems of global environmental change onto a single stage for discussion by sociologists, economists and natural scientists alike. Examples are taken from a wide variety of human activities (agriculture, energy, industry, ...) as well as natural physical processes. Each of these informative and clearly written essays is authored by a leading expert in this multidisciplinary field. The book thus provides necessary and stimulating reading for all those concerned about the preservation of a habitable global environment.

Аннотация: The book offers the following new results: improved estimates of carbon released during at a variety of scales, from individual sites to the entire North American boreal-forest region; direct evidence of enhanced soil respiration after fire in Alaskan boreal forests; studies of the influence of fire on long-term forest-succession patterns; modeling results of the effects of climate warming on the fire regime; examples of the use of satellite imagery to monitor surface characteristics important in carbon cycling; modeling results of how climate change will interact with the fire regime to influence carbon storage. Perspectives on Eurasian and Russian boreal-forest fire-management policies and research are also included.

Climatic adaptation of Scots pine (Pinus Sylvestris L.) in Finland based on male flowering phenology

anthesis -- flowering phenology -- pollen recording -- heat sum -- adaptation -- reinvasion

Аннотация: The aim of this study was to analyse the geographical variation found in the timing of anthesis in Scots pine. In the adaptaion of the generative cycle to local climatic conditions, the geographical adaptability weighted with the so called Linsser's law is a particularly intersting point. Geographical correlations calculated against distances measured along simulated post-glacial migration routes were stronger than purely latitudinal correlations. Effects of the reinvasion of Scots pine into Finland are thus still visible in pine populations. In light of flowering phenology it seems probable that the northern populations of Scots pine in Finland have still not completely adapted to the prevailing cold climate at these latitudes. A moderate warming of the climate would therefore be beneficial for Scots pine.

Аннотация: Trees are a major component of the biosphere and have played an important part in our history and culture. Today, we are facing the changes of global warming and dwindling fossil fuel reserves. Trees, and in particular their wood, can help us solve both these modern dilemmas. Unfortunately, we know too little about the biology of these plants, due largely to a lack of appropriate techniques. This book presents a wide variety of detailed techniques and protocols for the study of the cell and molecular biology of wood formation in trees. The techniques covered reflect a hierarchical approach to the study of the developmental biology of wood formation: anatomical, biochemical and molecular-genetical.

Аннотация: This book addresses the questuions that lie at the heart of political and social concern about the environment. Is the current lifestyle of modern, industrial society sustainable? What kind of world will our grandchildren inherit? And the most basic question of all: are human beings purely consumers, or should we also be stewards of the world's resources?

Environmental change in Siberia: earth observation, field studies and modeling
[Текст] : сборник научных трудов / ed. by H. Balzter. - Dordrecht et.al. : Springer, 2010. - 282 с. : ил., табл. - (Advances in global change research ; vol. 40). - Библиогр. в конце ст. - ISBN 978-90-481-8640-2 : 3975.60 р.

Аннотация: This book covers a round-up of environmental changes in Siberia with a focus on the terrestrial biosphere but also discussing climate and atmosphere and the hydrological cycle. It concludes with a discussion of information system approaches that are being developed to safeguard and make accessibile spatial and temporal data for environmental studies. Siberia is undergoing rapid transformations as a result of its climate vulnerability and the exceptionally high rate of warming it is undergone in recent decades. The information presented in this book was not easily accessible to the global change community before.
