Аннотация: This article deals with the results in forest type mapping, based on aerial photographs and made for the community forests situated around Bern (Switzerland). The methods described concern photo-interpretation, field checking and map construction. Special information is given about the percentage of interpretation errors and their possible causes; finally a comparison of time is made between photo-interpretation methods and conventional terrestrial methods.

Аннотация: Forest inventory methods in tropical regions are so closely connected with photo interpretation procedures, that it seems quite justified to publish in this series a study dealing with more statistical problems. Using available information from the temperate regions and tropical countries, the influence of relatively small sample plots on the resulting variability will be demonstrated. As aresult, suitable methods are developed for establishing a possible relationship between variability, sampling size and stem density in the tropical regions.
