Аннотация: Irregular seed production is a rather common phenomenon on forest trees, including several species of conifers. Good and poor crops follow each other at intervals. This makes it necessary to store seed of disired species, so that regular supplies are available each year for planting purposes. In order that seed may not lose its germination capacity during storage, suitable conditions must be provided, e.g. low temperature, low relative humidity, etc. . An important factor affecting by the germination capacity of stored seed is the amount of mechanical damage it possesses (e.g. from dewinging, etc.)

Аннотация: In this investigation, the effect of three distances: 22, 19 and 13 cm between the water level and the seed bed on Jacobsen apparatus (referred to in the following text as "water distance"), was studied on the germination of 24 samples of fresh and old Scots pine seed. The results showed that in most of the samples there was a tendency for germination percentage to be highest at the shortest water distance used (13 cm), although these differences were significant only in three cases. Also the germination rate was the fastest, at least in the first few days of the test, at 13 cm water distance in several samples. For the practical seed testing work, this study has indicated that it is important to keep the distance between the water level and seed bed on Jacobsen apparatus constant, in order to obtain comparable germination results

Аннотация: In this investigation the effect of the germination periods of 14, 21 and 30 days was studied on the percentage and the rate of germination of Pinus silvestris and Picea abies seed. Samples from areas lying between 50 degrees N and 68 degrees N latitudes were used. Seed with well-developed embryo and endosperm and with high viability, as well as that with reduced viability due to age or due to poor embryo and/or endosperm development was tested. The results showed that in former type of seed, a germination period of 14 days may be adequate. However, in the later type of seed, a longer period (21 or 30 days) may be desirable, so that a sample can attain its maximum germination percentage

Аннотация: In this investigation the working out and the standardisation of the x-ray contrast method for determination of the germinability of Picea abies (L.) Karst. seed is described. 84 samples from different countries and with various germination values were used for the study. Treatment of a sample with a 40 per cent solution of sodium iodide for 15 minutes at room temperature was found to be suitable for calculating its germinability

Аннотация: This paper deals with a comparison of the results of germinability obtained by the indigo carmine and x-ray contrast methods with the gemination values of the samples on Jacobsen apparatus. The latter values were used as the standard for comparison in this investigation. The investigation has shown that the x-ray contrast method is more reliable than the indigo carmine method for the rapid determination of the germinability of Scots pine and Norway spruce seed.

Аннотация: Seeds or fruits of 165 forestry species from nine tropical countries were investigated by x-ray radiography. The results showed that the method can be reliably used for detecting empty, filled, insect-attacked, mechanically damaged and diseased seeds or fruits. The applications of x-ray radiography in tropical forestry for cone, fruit and seed collection, seed processing, nursery practice, seed trade and plant quarantines, and for research etc. are discussed.
