Аннотация: Among the bacteria tested was the sporeformer Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, which was found to be particulaly virulent for the alfalfa caterpillar, although larvae of certain other species were also susceptible to the bacterium. The present paper is a report of the results obtained in tests. Also presented are certain aspects of the biological control potentialities of other sporeforming bacteria, and some general considerations of B. thuringiensis as an insect pathogen

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
insecticide, hornworms, chemicals

Аннотация: At present, more insecticide is applies in North California for the control of hornworms than for the control of any other tobacco pest. Both the tobacco hornworm, and the tomato hornworm are found on tobacco, but the former is by far the more important. Hornworms can be successfully controlled with a number of different insecticides, but the use of chemicals on tobacco presents a number of problems that may assume greater importance in the future. Therefore, to investigate any new material or method for control which offers the possibility of reduced chemical residues. Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, while harmless to humans, livestock, and plants, has shown promise in the control of several lepidopterous pests.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
epizootic disease, polyhedrosis virus, insect population

Аннотация: The polyhedrosis of the alfalfa caterpillar is an important factor in the natural reduction of populations of this insect in California. The results of preliminary field tests indicate that: (1) The virus, applied as a spray, is capable of causing infection in and markedly reducing populations of the alfalfa caterpillar. (2) It is possible initiate an epizootic of the disease in populations of low density (20 to 30 larvae per 10 sweeps), and that even these low population can be substantially reduced by the artificial dissemination of the virus. (3) It is possible to initiate an epizootic of the disease in a population of caterpillars earlier than it would occur naturally, thus curtailing the amount of damage done to the crop by insect

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
cutworm, stress, infection, environmental factors

Аннотация: An attempt was made to gain some indication as to the role of five different "Stressors" in a granulosis of varigated cutworm. In general, it was found that, with the possible exception of ether, none of the test factors (excessive heat, excessive cold, ultraviolet light, abnormal nutrition) sgnificantly enhanced, promoted, or induced granulosis infection in Peridroma larvae. Considerable mortality in the test insects resulted from the action of the test factors themselves, and from other nonvirus causes, such as bacterial infection

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
microbial insecticides, microorganisms

Аннотация: On the basis of theoretical considerations, as well as experimental evidence, there appears to be little reason to believe that crystalliferous Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner and its close varieties as they occur in properly prapared microbial insecticides are likely to mutate spontaneously into forms pathogenic for vertebrates. Similarly, on the basis of our present-day understanding of bacterial genetics, it appears that such mutations are not very likely with most of the truly entomogenous bacteria. At least, the possibilities in this regard do not appear to be sufficient to preclude the use of adequately tested entomogenous microorganisms for pest control purposes. Nevertheless, safequrds should be maintained to detect such events should they occur

Аннотация: In general, during recent years, in the use of microorganisms as a means of controlling insect pests has engendered some concern in certain quarters as to the safety of these agents for man. Microorganisms pathogenic to insects, and used as active ingredients in microbial control products, are harmless to man, animals, and plants. Provisionary methods of standardizing microbial insecticides and ensuring safety standards for them are suggested

disease -- virus -- infection

Аннотация: The purpose of present paper to recount seven new instances in which a single insect species is subject to infection by two types of virus; in one case both types occurred simultaneously in the same specimen. The number of insect species known to be susceptible to both a nuclear polyhedrosis virus and a granulosis virus is not great. Nevetheless, a perusal of the literature shows as many as seven insect species recorded, at different times, as being attacked by a nuclear polyhedrosis and a granulosis virus. It is to be hoped that eventually a comparative morphological, developmental, and biochemical study will be made of two types of virus as they occurr in a single host species
