Аннотация: This paper presents a generalized technology of extraction of explicit knowledge from data. The main ideas are 1) maximal reduction of network complexity (not only removal of neurons or synapses, but removal all the unnecessary elements and signals and reduction of the complexity of elements), 2) using of adjustable and flexible pruning process (the pruning sequence shouldn't be predetermined - the user should have a possibility to prune network on his own way in order to achieve a desired network structure for the purpose of extraction of rules of desired type and form), and 3) extraction of rules not in predetermined but any desired form. Some considerations and notes about network architecture and training process and applicability of currently developed pruning techniques and rule extraction algorithms are discussed. This technology, being developed by us for more than 10 years, allowed us to create dozens of knowledge-based expert systems.

Аннотация: Computational aerodynamics is a key technology in aircraft design which is ahead of physical experiment and complements it. Of course all three components of computational modeling are actively developed: mathematical models of real aerodynamic processes, numerical algorithms, and high-performance computing. The most impressive progress has been made in the field of computing, though with a considerable complication of computer architecture. Numerical algorithms are developed more conservative. More precisely, they are offered and theoretically justified for more simple mathematical problems. Nevertheless, computational mathematics now has amassed a whole palette of numerical algorithms that can provide acceptable accuracy and interface between modern mathematical models in aerodynamics and high-performance computers. A significant step in this direction was the European Project ADIGMA whose positive experience will be used in International Project TRISTAM for further movement in the field of computational technologies for aerodynamics. This paper gives a general overview of objectives and approaches intended to use and a description of the recommended four-stage computer technology. В© 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Аннотация: Numerical schemes for solving two-dimensional dynamic problems of elasticity theory based upon several local approximations for each of the required functions are discussed. The schemes contain free parameters (dissipation constants). An explicit form of artificial dissipation of the solutions allows us to control its size and to effectively construct both explicit and implicit schemes. The principle of producing such schemes is applied to a plane dynamic problem of elasticity theory as an example. We describe a class of problems for which numerical algorithms using several local approximations for each of the required functions are constructed. Examples of solving practical problems are given. Аннотация: A large number and wide variety of lake ecosystem models have been developed and published during the past four decades. We identify two challenges for making further progress in this field. One such challenge is to avoid developing more models largely following the concept of others ('reinventing the wheel'). The other challenge is to avoid focusing on only one type of model, while ignoring new and diverse approaches that have become available ('having tunnel vision'). In this paper, we aim at improving the awareness of existing models and knowledge of concurrent approaches in lake ecosystem modelling, without covering all possible model tools and avenues. First, we present a broad variety of modelling approaches. To illustrate these approaches, we give brief descriptions of rather arbitrarily selected sets of specific models. We deal with static models (steady state and regression models), complex dynamic models (CAEDYM, CE-QUAL-W2, Delft 3D-ECO, LakeMab, LakeWeb, MyLake, PCLake, PROTECH, SALMO), structurally dynamic models and minimal dynamic models. We also discuss a group of approaches that could all be classified as individual based: super-individual models (Piscator, Charisma), physiologically structured models, stage-structured models and traitbased models. We briefly mention genetic algorithms, neural networks, Kalman filters and fuzzy logic. Thereafter, we zoom in, as an in-depth example, on the multi-decadal development and application of the lake ecosystem model PCLake and related models (PCLake Metamodel, Lake Shira Model, IPH-TRIM3D-PCLake). In the discussion, we argue that while the historical development of each approach and model is understandable given its 'leading principle', there are many opportunities for combining approaches. We take the point of view that a single 'right' approach does not exist and should not be strived for. Instead, multiple modelling approaches, applied concurrently to a given problem, can help develop an integrative view on the functioning of lake ecosystems. We end with a set of specific recommendations that may be of help in the further development of lake ecosystem models.

Аннотация: Background: Protein translation is a multistep process which can be represented as a cascade of biochemical reactions (initiation, ribosome assembly, elongation, etc.), the rate of which can be regulated by small non-coding microRNAs through multiple mechanisms. It remains unclear what mechanisms of microRNA action are the most dominant: moreover, many experimental reports deliver controversial messages on what is the concrete mechanism actually observed in the experiment. Nissan and Parker have recently demonstrated that it might be impossible to distinguish alternative biological hypotheses using the steady state data on the rate of protein synthesis. For their analysis they used two simple kinetic models of protein translation. Results: In contrary to the study by Nissan and Parker, we show that dynamical data allow discriminating some of the mechanisms of microRNA action. We demonstrate this using the same models as developed by Nissan and Parker for the sake of comparison but the methods developed (asymptotology of biochemical networks) can be used for other models. We formulate a hypothesis that the effect of microRNA action is measurable and observable only if it affects the dominant system (generalization of the limiting step notion for complex networks) of the protein translation machinery. The dominant system can vary in different experimental conditions that can partially explain the existing controversy of some of the experimental data. Conclusions: Our analysis of the transient protein translation dynamics shows that it gives enough information to verify or reject a hypothesis about a particular molecular mechanism of microRNA action on protein translation. For multiscale systems only that action of microRNA is distinguishable which affects the parameters of dominant system (critical parameters), or changes the dominant system itself. Dominant systems generalize and further develop the old and very popular idea of limiting step. Algorithms for identifying dominant systems in multiscale kinetic models are straightforward but not trivial and depend only on the ordering of the model parameters but not on their concrete values. Asymptotic approach to kinetic models allows putting in order diverse experimental observations in complex situations when many alternative hypotheses co-exist.

Аннотация: Mathematical models of the dynamics of elastic-plastic and granular media are formulated as variational inequalities for hyperbolic operators with one-sided constraints describing the transition of a material in plastic state. On this basis a priori integral estimates are constructed in characteristic cones of operators, from which follows the uniqueness and continuous dependence on initial data of solutions of the Cauchy problem and of the boundary-value problems with dissipative boundary conditions. With the help of an integral generalization of variational inequalities the relationships of strong discontinuity in dynamic models of elastic-plastic and granular media are obtained, whose analysis allows us to calculate velocities of shock waves and to construct discontinuous solutions. Original algorithms of solution correction are developed which can be considered as a realization of the splitting method with respect to physical processes. В© 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Аннотация: Parallel computational algorithms for the numerical modeling of dynamic interactions of elastic blocks through thin elastic and viscoelastic interlayers in structurally inhomogeneous medium such as rock are developed. Monotonous grid-characteristic ENO-scheme with the balanced number of time steps in blocks and interlayers is used for the numerical solution. The algorithms are implemented in 1d and 2d cases with the CUDA technology (Compute Unified Device Architecture) for supercomputers with graphics processing units. The results of numerical analysis demonstrate peculiar quality of planar wave propagation in materials with layered microstructure.

Dynamic and Static Limitation in Multiscale Reaction Networks

Reaction network -- Multiscale ensemble -- Dominant system -- Multiscale asymptotic -- Model reduction -- spectral gap

Аннотация: The concept of the limiting step gives the limit simplification: the whole network behaves as a single step. This is the most popular approach for model simplification in chemical kinetics. However, in its elementary form this idea is applicable only to the simplest linear cycles in steady states. For simple cycles the nonstationary behavior is also limited by a single step, but not the same step that limits the stationary rate. In this chapter, we develop a general theory of static and dynamic limitation for all linear multiscale networks. Our main mathematical tools are auxiliary discrete dynamical systems on finite sets and specially developed algorithms of “cycles surgery” for reaction graphs. New estimates of eigenvectors for diagonally dominant matrices are used. Multiscale ensembles of reaction networks with well-separated constants are introduced and typical properties of such systems are studied. For any given ordering of reaction rate constants the explicit approximation of steady state, relaxation spectrum and related eigenvectors (“modes”) is presented. In particular, we prove that for systems with well-separated constants eigenvalues are real (damped oscillations are improbable). For systems with modular structure, we propose the selection of such modules that it is possible to solve the kinetic equation for every module in the explicit form. All such “solvable” networks are described. The obtained multiscale approximations, that we call “dominant systems” are computationally cheap and robust. These dominant systems can be used for direct computation of steady states and relaxation dynamics, especially when kinetic information is incomplete, for design of experiments and mining of experimental data, and could serve as a robust first approximation in perturbation theory or for preconditioning.

Аннотация: A system of generators of a group consisting of three involutions, two of which commute, is called a Mazurov triple. We describe algorithms for finding in an explicit form the Mazurov triples of one of the sporadic Monsters, the finite simple group B, and for constructing a Hamiltonian cycle in the Cayley graph of the finite group with Mazurov triple. We give examples of Hamiltonian cycles in the Cayley graphs of some groups.

Аннотация: The paper is devoted to the problem of analytical continuation of functions from sets, being within regularity sets, at the presence of errors in predetermination of initial data. The problem of constructing the optimal algorithms of continuation is considered. Estimations for the accuracy and stability of the optimal continuation algorithms are obtained. A new form is proposed of the uniqueness theorem of analytical functions - the theorem of asymptotic uniqueness and self-regularizating algorithms. Causes of computational instability of the analytical continuation problems are elucidated and a method for organization of a computational process with control of computational errors is proposed.

Аннотация: We propose a new algebraic approach to the analysis of linear static systems with interval uncertainty. Its mathematical basis is replacement of the original problem by a problem of seeking the algebraic interval solution of an auxiliary system of equations in Kaucher extended interval arithmetic. We investigate the existence and uniqueness of algebraic interval solutions, develop some computational algorithms for obtaining them (in particular, Newton's subdifferential method), and prove the convergence of these algorithms.

Аннотация: The erection of large hydroelectric power stations leads to appreciable changes in hydrothermal and ice river regimes both above and below the hydroscheme. The river regime change affects the adjacent areas ecology. To estimate completely the ecologic effect of designed and already constructed hydroelectric power stations, it is necessary to determine the hydrothermal and ice river regime changes. As a methodical basis for the construction of a set of computer algorithms, a method of splitting by physical processes and the module principle has been used. Among the hydro-ice-thermics problems of rivers and water reservoirs are the following: the determination of the temperature regime of a water reservoir, an investigation of stratified flows in a weakly-running water reservoir; an investigation of a hydrothermal river regime; an investigation of ice cover edge dynamics in the downstream of a river. For every problem, mathematical models of different levels of complication and computer programs have been worked out.
