biogenic and organic substances -- bacterio- and phytoplankton -- chlorophyll -- primary production

Аннотация: Multidisciplinary studies carried out in 2007-2008 revealed the features of concentration dynamics of biogenic and organic substances, bacterio- and phytoplankton, and chlorophyll in different reaches of the Enisei River. By the development state of bacterio- and phytoplankton, saprobity index, total primary production g O(2)/(m(2) day), and self-purification index, the water refers to the third quality class (satisfactorily clean), beta-mesosaprobic. The Enisei refers to the oligotrophic type upstream of the Angara mouth and to the mesotrophic type downstream of it.

chlorophyll -- primary production -- remote sensing -- Atlantic Ocean

Аннотация: To preserve and utilize the biosphere it is imperative that we understand the long-term dynamics of the primary production process on our planet. Variability of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean is one of the most important components of this process. However, size and access make its investigation labour-intensive. Dependence of primary production on high variability of hydrophysical phenomena in the ocean (fluctuations of currents, frontal zones, etc.) makes it difficult to locate points to measure chlorophyll concentration dynamics. To locate such quasistationary zones with respect to seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration by satellite data the Institute of Biophysics (Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch) has developed a geoinformation system. II use made it possible to locate such zones over the entire ocean. The work shows zones on the Central and Northern Atlantic. They form the ground to analyse perennial dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. The quasistationary zones are proposed for systematic monitoring of phytopigment concentration by space-borne and marine craft. (C) 1998 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Аннотация: Seasonal dynamics of phytopigment concentrations in the ocean is one of the key factors indicating the types and intensity of hydrobiological exchange processes in the ocean surface layer. Thanks to the efficient operation of the SeaWiFS equipment for the last 7 years we have managed to carry out statistical analysis of image time series, which is necessary for estimation of reliability of investigations of oscillatory hydrobiological processes on a global scale. Using the autocorrelation method, we revealed a pronounced heterogeneity of the types of seasonal dynamics in the ocean. Statistically significant seasonal dynamics of phytopigment concentrations exists only at 19% of the area of the Global Ocean. On 51% of the area seasonal dynamics is disturbed essentially so, that becomes statistically insignificant and is absent at 30%. The most interesting feature of the pattern obtained was the diversity of the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration under similar climatic conditions. Another interesting feature of such data presentation is that two types of seasonal dynamics - yearly and half-yearly - were defined. The detected zonality will provide the basis for more efficient development and application of ecological modeling, taking into account real-life hydrobiological and hydrological conditions. Аннотация: To preserve the biosphere and to use it efficiently, it is necessary to gain a deep insight into the dynamics of the primary production process on our planet. Variability of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean is one of the most important components of this process. These investigations are, however, very labor-consuming, because of the difficulties related to the accessibility of the water surface and its large size. In this work long-term changes in chlorophyll concentration in the surface layer of the ocean have been analyzed on the basis of the CZCS data for 7.5 years from 1979 to 1986 and the SeaWiFS data from 1997 to 2004. It has been shown that the average chlorophyll concentration calculated in all investigated areas varies moderately. However, when analyzing spatially local trends, the areas have been detected that have significant rise and fall of chlorophyll concentrations. Some interesting features of the long-term dynamics of chlorophyll concentration have been found. The opposite directions of long-term trends (essential increase or decrease) cannot be explained only by large-scale hydrological phenomena in the ocean (currents, upwellings, etc.). The measured chlorophyll concentration results from the balance between production and destruction processes. Which process dominates is determined by various hydrophysical, hydrobiological, and climatic processes, leading to sharp rises or falls of the concentration. It is important to estimate the scale of the areas in which this or that process dominates. Therefore, the study addresses not only the dynamics of the mean value but also the dynamics of the areas in which the dominance of certain factors has led to a sharp fall or rise in chlorophyll concentration. Thus, the obtained results can be used to estimate long-term changes in the ocean biota. В© 2006 COSPAR.

Spatial and temporal anomalies of chlorophyll concentration in Atlantic ocean (by space-based data)

Аннотация: The work presents long-standing CZCS-satellite-based data about spatial distribution of anomalies in chlorophyll concentration and temperature of the ocean. An anomaly criterion is proposed. Maps of Atlantic ocean areas with elevated probability of anomalies are given. Properties of anomalous zones in different parts of the Atlantic ocean are discussed. Satellite-based maps of anomaly coefficients for chlorophyll concentration and temperature in the Atlantic ocean have been shown to feature substantial differences, the zones of elevated anomaly of chlorophyll concentration and temperature - to be close only in the vicinity of the Amazon outflow into the Atlantic ocean. Along with fundamental knowledge about dynamics of biological phenomena in the ocean the methods described may be used to reveal deviations due to anthropogenic impact. The methods presented may be used to process SeaWiFS prograna data. The data derived may be used to analyze long-standing time series to estimate randomness of cunent changes. В©2002 COSPAR.     Spatial and temporal anomalies of sea surface temperature in global scale (by space-based data)
/ A. Shevyrnogov, G. Vysotskaya, E. Shevyrnogov // Advances in Space Research. - 2004. - Vol. 33, Is. 7. - P. 1179-1183, DOI 10.1016/S0273-1177(03)00369-7 . - ISSN 0273-1177
Аннотация: The work presents the data on the spatial distribution of temperature anomalies in the Global Ocean, based on the long-term measurements with the AVHRR satellite equipment. It is noteworthy that such results can be only obtained by using long time series of satellite images. To obtain them by ship-borne methods is actually impossible. The proposed anomaly criterion is equal to a difference between minimum/maximum and average temperature, normed for the mean square deviation. The difference is calculated from the whole time series (with regard to a season). Based on this criterion, anomalies can be distinguished on the background of usual seasonal dynamics at various absolute values of deviations of the measured parameter. Besides, rare, single, fluctuations can be also revealed. Based on the proposed criterion, connected zones have been defined. These zones occur almost in every part of the Global Ocean. The data obtained have been analyzed in association with the CZCS (1978-1986) and SeaWiFS satellite images in order to compare them with the areas of anomalous dynamics of chlorophyll concentration and the regions quasistationary in the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll. Anomalies in the temperature dynamics are of exceptional importance for the formation of climatic deviations; they affect the ocean-atmosphere interaction and reflect variations in the hydrological structure of the surface waters. The work presents a comparison with the dynamics of chlorophyll concentration distribution determined from the SeaWiFS data for the Atlantic Ocean. В© 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Аннотация: The new data on anomalies in seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean have altered the approach to the analysis of long-term trends of phytopigments in the surface layer of the ocean. Zones have been found in which at various times there was a many-fold increase in chlorophyll concentration versus its usual level. These changes are local in time and space. If anomalies in the long-term tendencies in the change of phytopigment surface distribution in the ocean are ignored in the analysis, the resulting picture will inadequately reflect the real processes. The work presents the results of the analysis of long-term trends of chlorophyll concentration on the basis of the CZCS satellite data in the Atlantic Ocean. The results are given as maps representing different variants of trends. The data obtained can be used to analyze the consequences of long-term changes of climate and changes in the interaction between the atmosphere and the ocean. В©2002 COSPAR. Аннотация: In this work historical investigations and modern results of classification of the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir are presented. The paper presents results of studying the dynamics of phytopigments and other optically active components, using multispectral satellite data. Several approaches to interpreting satellite data for optically complex inland water bodies are offered. Based on results of historical investigations it is shown that the spatial distribution of phytoplankton in the reservoir stems back to the time of its formation. Color index in the red spectral region (CIR) is introduced. A relationship between the color index and chlorophyll concentration is investigated. The CIR, derived from the AVHRR data, has been found to be related to chlorophyll concentration. Based on MODIS data, the waters of the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir have been classified in accordance with their optical spectral variability, using the technique of unsupervised Iso-Data classification. An empirical relationship between multispectral MODIS data and the ground-truth measurements of chlorophyll concentration has been found. (C) 2008 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Аннотация: Using fluorimeter Junior PAM (Heinz Walz GmbH, Germany) the fluorescence parameters of leaves of Betula pendula are investigated. A linear dependence of the maximum fluorescence (Fm) of leaves from the ratio of total chlorophylls concentration to concentration of carotenoids is obtained. Such dependence is found for samples collected during the period of vegetation and for simultaneous selection of colored leaves.

Перевод заглавия: Assessment of ecological state of water bodies of Altai territory using hydro-optical methods and biotesting
The paper investigates the possibilities of a combination of optical methods and biotestingfor the assessment of ecological state of natural water ecosystems. As natural reservoirs, five lakes(Gorkoe, Bezymyannoe, Lapunikha, Bolshoe Ostrovnoe, Novenkoe) from 4 regions of Altai Krai (Mamontovskiy, Uglovskiy, Rubtsovskiy and Loktevskiy) were taken. The study determined the optical parameters that provideecological assessment of a water body: concentration of chlorophyll «a» (the trophic state of the reservoir), photosynthetic activity of algae (or their life status), dissolved organic and suspended inorganic matter. In this work, we applied methods of biotesting, based on the change in luminescence intensity of luminous bacteria. Optical and biological characteristics obtained in the research allowed us to assess the condition of the objects, on the one hand, by the parameters of condition of environment (optical parameters) and, on the other hand, by the indicators characterizing the state of the biota (bioluminescence methods). The combination of control methods offered in this paper allows to quickly identify the most unfavorable objects from the ecological point of view and solve the problem of the necessity of other analytical procedures.

Аннотация: Saline Lake Shira (Southern Siberia, Russia) was meromictic through the observation period 2002–2015. During the under-ice periods of 2015 and 2016, complete mixing of the water column was recorded for the first time, and hydrogen sulphide temporarily disappeared from the water column of the lake; i.e. in those years the lake turned to holomixis. In the summer of 2015, a sharp increase in chlorophyll a, organic carbon, zooplankton, and phytoflagellates was observed in the lake, which was probably due to the release of nutrients from the monimolimnion. Purple sulfur bacteria completely disappeared from the lake after the first mixing in 2015, and did not reappear despite the restoration of meromixis in 2017. Thus, it was demonstrated that purple sulfur bacteria are sensitive to the weakening of the stratification of Lake Shira. Based on the data of the seasonal monitoring of temperature and salinity profiles over the period 2002–2017, it was presumed that the main cause of deep mixing in 2015 was the weakening of the salinity gradient due to strong wind impact and early ice retreat in the spring of 2014. In addition, it was shown that in previous years a significant contribution to the maintenance of meromixis was made by an additional influx of fresh water, which caused a rise in the lake level in the period 2002–2007. Thus, we identified a relationship between the stratification regime of the lake and the change in its level, which provides valuable information both for the forecast of water quality and for reconstruction of the Holocene climate humidity in this region of Southern Siberia from the sediment cores of Lake Shira. © 2017 Elsevier GmbH

Перевод заглавия: Temporal dynamics of structural and functional characteristics of the Yenisei river phytoplankton downstream of the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station
Patr., в летний - Aulacoseira islandica (O. Mull.) Sim. и Cyclotella radiosa (Grun.)
The Yenisei River is the biggest waterway in Siberia. In the second half of the 20th century, the Yenisei River was overlapped by dams, and it deeply damaged the natural hydrological, hydrochemical and hydrobiological regimes of the river. As a result of constructing the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station, a significant river component - phytoplankton, which occupies the central place in the formation of the aquatic ecosystem - has changed downstream of the river. In the river, phytoplankton is formed from phytoperiphyton and allochthonous algae, including phytoplankton species of upstream reservoirs. Therefore, knowledge of transformation laws of phytoplankton species composition, which occurs during the regulation of the river flow and formation of reservoirs, may contribute to the development of ideas about changing the aquatic communities. The aim of this research was to explore the formation of phytoplankton under the conditions of water discharge in the Krasnoyarsk HPS and to study chlorophyll a concentration. We collected phytoplankton samples at a distance of 34 km below the Krasnoyarsk HPS (55°59'1.8"N, 92°47'13.4"E) in 2008-2014 and analyzed them according standard hydrobiological methods (See Table). In 2012-2014, we measured fluorescent water characteristics along with the study of algae. We took the nomenclature for algae considering taxonomic transformations according to the system adopted by the International algae database (http://www.algaebase.org). A quantitative processing of phytoplankton samples was conducted daily, species composition and biomass of algae was determined weekly. In size, algae cells were differentiated according to Rainey. The degree of complexity of phytoplankton communities was determined calculating the Shannon species diversity index (by biomass). The dominant algae included species making the main contribution into the total phytoplankton biomass. In 20122014, along with the study of algae, we determined chlorophyll а concentration by fluorimetric method, weekly (See Fig. 3). We collected and processed a total of 2453 qualitative and quantitative phytoplankton samples for the period of study; 89 samples to determine chlorophyll а content. Altogether, we found 99 species, kinds and forms of algae from 6 groups in the river phytoplankton. In the Yenisei River, diatoms, which predominate in plankton in all seasons, are characterized by the maximum number of species. There is a certain sequence in the appearance of dominant algae. From late April to late May, Diatoma vulgare Bory and Hannaea arcus (Ehrb.) Patr. were recorded in quantities, in June -Aulacoseira islandica (O. Mull.) Sim., in July - Cyclotella radiosa (Grun.) Lemm., in August - Fragilaria crotonensis Kitt. (See Fig. 1). Upstream of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir A. islandica had a dominant position in nephotic cold layer in June, in July and August - C. radiosa; F. crotonensis was a subdominant. It is known that deep water discharge through the dam (18-40 м) is specific for the Krasnoyarsk reservoir. This causes the flow of algae over the dam. In general, the dynamics of the total number and the total biomass of phytoplankton had the form of unimodal curve within the year (with a peak in June) (See Fig. 2). Nanophytoplankton (2-20 mkm) and microphytoplankton (20-64 mkm) made the biggest contribution to the total biomass of phytoplankton. We recorded peaks of number and biomass of phytoplankton in June in all years in question. We found that the percentage of chlorophyll content per phytoplankton biomass unit had seasonal variations and increased in winter (See Fig. 5). It is known, that the concentration of chlorophyll a depends on dimensional structure of phytoplankton. In spring and summer, the domination of algae cells with bigger volumes in phytoplankton caused a decrease in chlorophyll а concentration.

Аннотация: The main task of complex environmental monitoring is evaluating the state of an aquatic system and state prediction of ecosystem links under different levels of water supply, anthropogenic influence and climatic fluctuations. The paper analyzes the inter-annual dynamics of functional activity of bacterio – and phytoplankton of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir depending on abiotic factors (reservoir filling level and temperature conditions). The data have been obtained from series of regular observations during the growing season in the 2000 – 2017. In the work, distribution of concentration of chlorophyll "a" and photosynthetic activity of the phytoplankton, production characteristics of bacterioplankton and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) are presented. The analysis is carried out in the model-driven system of support of hydrobiological studies of the Krasnoyarsk reservoir by the method of k-means. Systematization of accumulated data of scientific research has become a basis for a sequence of long-term investigations, a comparative analysis of data from related studies and data analysis.
