    Scattering rates versus moments
[Text] : alternative Grad equations / A.N. Gorban, I.V. Karlin // Physical Review E. - 1996. - Vol. 54, № 4. - p. R3109-R3112
Перевод заглавия: Скорости рассеяния вместо моментов. Альтернативные уравнения Грэда

Аннотация: Scattering rates moments of collision integral! are treated as independent variables, and as an alternative to moments of the distribution function, to describe the rarefied gas near local equilibrium. A version of the entropy maximum principle is used to derive the Grad-like description in terms of a finite number of scattering rates. The equations are compared to the Grad moment system in the heat nonconductive case. Estimations for hard spheres demonstrate, in particular, some 10% excess of the viscosity coefficient resulting from the scattering rate description, as compared to the Grad moment estimation.

Loss of hydrogen and oxygen from the upper atmosphere of Venus
[Text] / H. Lammer [et al.] // Planet Space Sci. - 2006. - Vol. 54, Is. 13-14. - P1445-1456, DOI 10.1016/j.pss.2006.04.022. - Cited References: 93 . - ISSN 0032-0633

Аннотация: Atmospheric escape from the upper atmosphere of Venus is mainly influenced by the loss of hydrogen and oxygen caused by the interaction of solar radiation and particle flux with the unprotected planetary environment. Because one main aim of the ASPERA-4 particle/plasma and VEX-MAG magnetic field experiments on board of ESA's forthcoming Venus Express mission is the investigation of atmospheric erosion processes from the planet's ionosphere-exosphere environment, we study the total loss of hydrogen and oxygen and identified the efficiency of several escape mechanisms involved. For the estimation of pick up loss rates we use a gas dynamic test particle model and obtained average loss rates for H+, and O+ pick up ions of about 1 x 10(25) s(-1) and about 1.6 x 10(25) s(-1), respectively. Further, we estimate ion loss rates due to detached plasma clouds, which were observed by the pioneer Venus orbiter and may be triggered by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability of about 0.5-1 x 10(25) s(-1). Thermal atmospheric escape processes and atmospheric loss by photo-chemically produced oxygen atoms yield negligible loss rates. Sputtering by incident pick up O+ ions give O atom loss rates in the order of about 6 x 10(24) s(-1). On the other hand, photo-chemically produced hot hydrogen atoms are a very efficient loss mechanism for hydrogen on Venus with a global average total loss rate of about 3.8 x 10(25) s(-1), which is in agreement with Donahue and Hartle [1992. Solar cycle variations in H+ and D+ densities in the Venus ionosphere: implications for escape. Geophys. Res. Lett. 12, 2449-2452] and of the same order but less than the estimated H+ ion outflow on the Venus nightside of about 7.0 x 10(25) s(-1) due to acceleration by an outward electric polarization force related to ionospheric holes by Hartle and Grebowsky [1993. Light ion flow in the nightside ionosphere of Venus. J. Geophys. Res. 98, 7437-7445]. Our study indicates that on Venus, due to its larger mass and size compared to Mars, the most relevant atmospheric escape processes of oxygen involve ions and are caused by the interaction with the solar wind. The obtained results indicate that the ratio between H/O escape to space from the Venusian upper atmosphere is about 4, and is in a much better agreement with the stoichiometrically H/O escape ratio of 2:1, which is not the case on Mars. However, a detailed analysis of the outflow of ions from the Venus upper atmosphere by the ASPERA-4 and VEX-MAG instruments aboard Venus Express will lead to more accurate atmospheric loss estimations and a better understanding of the planet's water inventory. / L. B. Chubarov, Yu. I. Shokin // Computers and Fluids. - 1987. - Vol. 15, Is. 3. - P229-249 . - ISSN 0045-7930
Аннотация: The work is devoted to the questions of numerical modelling of long wave propagation, in particular tsunami waves, in the framework of non-linear dispersion models of the Boussinesq and Korteweg-de Vries type. The first part of the work includes a classification of some known mathematical models, in terms of dispersion correlation, phase and group velocities. Problems arising on the construction of finite-difference approximations of non-linear dispersion models are discussed in the second part of the work, special attention is given to the questions of constructing discrete boundary conditions. In the conclusion the results obtained in the course of numerical experiments and estimation of specifics of finite-difference models, and the contribution of non-linear dispersion effects in the process of wave propagation in the coastal zone, are discussed. The results of calculations of tsunami wave propagation in a wave tube with real bathymetry, are given. В© 1987.

Аннотация: The recovery problem of the power and effective height of an admixture source using the measurement data of the near-earth-surface concentration is considered on the basis of semi-empirical equation solution of turbulent diffusion. A technique is suggested for solution of the inverse problem and numerical construction of the optimal observations plan. There is passed an evaluation test of the suggested models of observations planning and source parameters estimation by using the data of field investigations in the neighbourhood of steam electric power station in Dikkerson. The experimental and recovered source parameters are in satisfactory agreement.

Аннотация: In the present work, interest is centered on the theory of fracture and practical approaches to reliability estimation of unidirectional composite materials which are based on it. Fracture mechanics is considered not as a theory of macrocracks but as mechanics of fracture mechanisms of the composites with allowance made for probability estimation. A model of composite material with fibers eliminated from the carrying scheme and parameters specific to the stress-strain-damage state (SSDS) was considered. According to the model, during loading, self-accelerated energy rise is accounted for by structural damages growth - the catastrophe takes place. The model allows us to calculate the critical stress. The composites redistribute forces from overloading zones to neighboring ones by microstructural deformations and damages. It is the effect of reservation of carrying ability. Due to this effect, low-value probability of fracture is sufficiently less for the composite than for homogeneous materials. The approach allows us to evaluate the reliability function for Both static loading and fatigue.

Algebraic approach to the analysis of linear static systems with interval uncertainty

Аннотация: This paper deals with mathematical and computational aspects of analysis of a linear static system under conditions of interval uncertainty. In particular, we consider minmax problems of estimating states (inverse minmax problems) under various assumptions on the realization of the system. The notion of alpha beta-solutions of interval equations is introduced as a formalization of the mathematical statement of the problem. The main result of the paper is a new algebraic approach to internal algebraic estimation of alpha beta-solution sets of interval linear equations, whose mathematical basis is the substitution of the initial problem for the problem of finding the algebraic solution of an auxiliary system of equations in extended Kaucher arithmetic. The property of maximality by inclusion of interval solutions of the problem, which are obtained by means of the algebraic approach, is proved.

Impact induced surface heating by planetesimals on early Mars
/ T. I. Maindl [et al.] // Astron. Astrophys. - 2015. - Vol. 574, DOI 10.1051/0004-6361/201424256 . - ISSN 0004-6361
Аннотация: Aims. We investigate the influence of impacts of large planetesimals and small planetary embryos on the early Martian surface on the hydrodynamic escape of an early steam atmosphere that is exposed to the high soft X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) flux of the young Sun. Methods. Impact statistics in terms of number, masses, velocities, and angles of asteroid impacts onto early Mars are determined via n-body integrations. Based on these statistics, smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations result in estimates of energy transfer into the planetary surface material and the resulting surface heating. For the estimation of the atmospheric escape rates we applied a soft X-ray and EUV absorption model and a 1D upper atmosphere hydrodynamic model to a magma ocean-related catastrophically outgassed steam atmosphere with surface pressure values of 52 bar H2O and 11 bar CO2. Results. The estimated impact rates and energy deposition onto an early Martian surface can account for substantial heating. The energy influx and conversion rate into internal energy is probably sufficient to keep a shallow magma ocean liquid for an extended period of time. Higher surface temperatures keep the outgassed steam atmosphere longer in vapor form and therefore enhance its escape to space within ?0.6 Myr after its formation.

Аннотация: Seasonal dynamics of phytopigment concentrations in the ocean is one of the key factors indicating the types and intensity of hydrobiological exchange processes in the ocean surface layer. Thanks to the efficient operation of the SeaWiFS equipment for the last 7 years we have managed to carry out statistical analysis of image time series, which is necessary for estimation of reliability of investigations of oscillatory hydrobiological processes on a global scale. Using the autocorrelation method, we revealed a pronounced heterogeneity of the types of seasonal dynamics in the ocean. Statistically significant seasonal dynamics of phytopigment concentrations exists only at 19% of the area of the Global Ocean. On 51% of the area seasonal dynamics is disturbed essentially so, that becomes statistically insignificant and is absent at 30%. The most interesting feature of the pattern obtained was the diversity of the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration under similar climatic conditions. Another interesting feature of such data presentation is that two types of seasonal dynamics - yearly and half-yearly - were defined. The detected zonality will provide the basis for more efficient development and application of ecological modeling, taking into account real-life hydrobiological and hydrological conditions.
