    Corrections and enhancements of quasi-equilibrium states

Аннотация: We give a compact non-technical presentation of two basic principles for reducing the description of nonequilibrium systems based on the quasi-equilibrium approximation. These two principles are: construction of invariant manifolds for the dissipative microscopic dynamics, and coarse-graining for the entropy-conserving microscopic dynamics. Two new results are presented: first, an application of the invariance principle to hybridization of micro-macro integration schemes is introduced, and is illustrated with non-linear dumbbell models; second, Ehrenfest's coarse-graining is extended to general quasi-equilibrium approximations, which gives the simplest way to derive dissipative equations from the Liouville equation in the short memory approximation.

At each step, the right-hand side of the system, as well as Jacobian matrix decomposition are evaluated only once. Efficiency of the integration method is illustrated using ring modulator calculation as an example.

Аннотация: A mathematical model of the far turbulent wake behind a towed body in a passively stratified medium, based on the known semi-empirical e-E > model of turbulence, is considered. A grouptheoretical analysis of the model is performed. With the help of the method of B-determining equations, the model is reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations, which is solved numerically. The resultant solution is compared with a self-similar solution obtained by direct numerical integration of the differential equations at large distances from the body.

Аннотация: An approach to efficiency improvement of monitoring of the emergency situations for the Siberian region is suggested in this paper. It is based on integration of data processing and storage technologies: Data Warehouse, OLAP and Expert systems. The data warehouse provides accumulation of data from isolated monitoring services. The OLAP tools allow a user to perform multiaspect monitoring of natural and anthropogenic emergency situations. The expert systems technology enables user to estimate of the emergencies risk based on state indicators. Suggested original methods and tools are embedded in emergency situations monitoring system "Espla-M". The system "Espla-M" is implemented in Ministry of emergency of Siberian Region. В© 2012 MIPRO.

Аннотация: A large number and wide variety of lake ecosystem models have been developed and published during the past four decades. We identify two challenges for making further progress in this field. One such challenge is to avoid developing more models largely following the concept of others ('reinventing the wheel'). The other challenge is to avoid focusing on only one type of model, while ignoring new and diverse approaches that have become available ('having tunnel vision'). In this paper, we aim at improving the awareness of existing models and knowledge of concurrent approaches in lake ecosystem modelling, without covering all possible model tools and avenues. First, we present a broad variety of modelling approaches. To illustrate these approaches, we give brief descriptions of rather arbitrarily selected sets of specific models. We deal with static models (steady state and regression models), complex dynamic models (CAEDYM, CE-QUAL-W2, Delft 3D-ECO, LakeMab, LakeWeb, MyLake, PCLake, PROTECH, SALMO), structurally dynamic models and minimal dynamic models. We also discuss a group of approaches that could all be classified as individual based: super-individual models (Piscator, Charisma), physiologically structured models, stage-structured models and traitbased models. We briefly mention genetic algorithms, neural networks, Kalman filters and fuzzy logic. Thereafter, we zoom in, as an in-depth example, on the multi-decadal development and application of the lake ecosystem model PCLake and related models (PCLake Metamodel, Lake Shira Model, IPH-TRIM3D-PCLake). In the discussion, we argue that while the historical development of each approach and model is understandable given its 'leading principle', there are many opportunities for combining approaches. We take the point of view that a single 'right' approach does not exist and should not be strived for. Instead, multiple modelling approaches, applied concurrently to a given problem, can help develop an integrative view on the functioning of lake ecosystems. We end with a set of specific recommendations that may be of help in the further development of lake ecosystem models.

Аннотация: The solar wind flow past nonaxisymmetric magnetospheres exhibits features which are absent in the case of axisymmetric magnetospheres such as that of Earth. We discuss results obtained by a numerical integration of the dissipationless MHD equations, under simplifying assumptions, and apply them to the two outer planets Jupiter and Saturn, both of whose magnetospheres depart substantially from axisymmetry. We model these magnetospheres as paraboloids with two different radii of curvature at the subsolar point, L-0 and L-1, where L-0 and L-1 refer to a magnetopause cut containing the rotational axis, and to the rotational equator, respectively (L-0 L-1). Аннотация: Two schemes of iterative solution of optimal control problems with fast and slow motions are considered here. The first is connected with the iterative solution of corresponding necessary optimality conditions and is adjoined to the iterative method of Ju.P. Boglaev for solution of singularly perturbed boundary value problems. The second scheme is applied to convex problems and is conceptionally close to methods of minimization with errors under computation. The distinguishing feature of both methods is the decomposition of restrictions on every iteration and the possibility of their integration in different scales of time. Аннотация: Methods used to calculate the reliability indices of structural components (the distribution function of remaining life, the probability of failure-free service, and the risk function) as applies to problems of the propagation of defects under a cyclic load are examined. The potentials of the method of "numeric experiments" are demonstrated in an example of the calculation of crack kinetics in a branch pipe in tension with bending. The reliability indices are calculated for a plane element with a crack by means of numeric integration of determining equations. It is possible to solve problems with different laws governing crack propagation and forms of density distribution for the size of the initial defect within the framework of these methods. A combination of approaches of fracture mechanics and reliability theory with numeric methods of calculation make it possible to evaluate the reliability indices of a defective structural component. Аннотация: This paper presents an approach of operational control of the state of technosphere and environment objects based on the integration of Data Warehouse, OLAP and Expert systems technologies. It looks at the structure of data warehouse that provides consolidation and storage of monitoring data. There is a description of OLAP-models that provide a multidimensional analysis of monitoring data and dynamic analysis of principal parameters of controlled objects. The authors suggest some criteria of emergency risk assessment using expert knowledge about danger levels. It is demonstrated now some of the proposed solutions could be adopted in territorial decision making support systems. Аннотация: Разработан L-устойчивый трехстадийный метод типа Розенброка третьего порядка точности для решения жестких задач. Построено неравенство для контроля точности вычислений, основанное на оценке аналога глобальной ошибки. Оценка осуществляется с привлечением ранее вычисленных стадий, что позволяет выбирать величину шага интегрирования фактически без увеличения вычислительных затрат. Получено неравенство для контроля точности вычислений. Сформулирован алгоритм интегрирования переменного шага.
An L-stable three-step method of the Rosenbrock type of a third-order approximation has been developed to solve stiff problems. To control the accuracy of calculations, we have written the inequation based on analogous global error estimation. The estimation is performed according to the previous calculations. It allows choosing the integration step size without extensive computation. The study results in the inequation to control the accuracy of calculations, and leads to the variable structure integration algorithm.

Аннотация: This article presents a technique of standardising and coding textual birthplace and occupation strings in the censuses of England and Wales and Scotland, 1851-1911. While the approaches for the two text strings are different, they are both based upon the integration of computer technologies, mathematical methods, and expert knowledge. Both processes are described formally using Structured Analysis and Design Technique methodology. The classification of occupations is defined by two algorithms based on statistical decision theory in order to allocate codes from the original occupation strings. Аннотация: Актуальность и цели. Проблема решения задачи Коши для жестких систем большой размерности возникает при моделировании физических и химических процессов, при аппроксимации уравнений в частных производных системой обыкновенных дифференциальных уравнений и во многих других важных приложениях. Учет большого числа факторов при построении математических моделей приводит к расширению класса задач, описываемых жесткими системами большой размерности. Сложность практических задач приводит к возрастающим требованиям к вычислительным алгоритмам. Материалы и методы. В случае большой размерности жесткой системы дифференциальных уравнений основные затраты приходятся на декомпозицию матрицы Якоби. В некоторых алгоритмах применяется замораживание матрицы Якоби, т.е. одна матрица используется на нескольких шагах интегрирования. Проблема замораживания матрицы достаточно просто решается в методах, в которых стадии вычисляются с применением итерационного процесса. Для безытерационных численных формул это существенная проблема. В данной работе сокращение затрат достигается за счет комбинирования явных и L -устойчивых методов по критерию устойчивости в процессе расчетов. Результаты. Создан алгоритм интегрирования переменной структуры на основе явной схемы типа Рунге - Кутты и L -устойчивого метода типа Розенброка третьего порядка. На каждом шаге эффективная численная формула выбирается по критерию устойчивости. Оценка максимального собственного числа матрицы Якоби, необходимая для переключения между методами, для явных численных схем определяется степенным методом через ранее вычисленные стадии, а для метода типа Розенброка - через норму матрицы Якоби. Построены неравенства для контроля точности и устойчивости. Приведены результаты расчетов. Выводы. Алгоритм интегрирования предназначен для решения жестких задач большой размерности. Результаты расчетов подтверждают эффективность построенного алгоритма.
Background. The Cauchy problem for large-scale stiff systems arises in simulation of physical and chemical processes, in approximation of partial differential equations by a system of ordinary differential equations and in plenty of other important applications. Taking into consideration a large number of factors in model development leads to expansion of a class of problems, determined by stiff systems of high dimension. The complexity of practical problems leads to additional requirements to computational algorithms. Materials and methods. Dealing with high dimensionality of a stiff system of ordinary differential equations, the main computational expenses concern the Jacobi matrix decomposition. In some algorithms one may use freezing of the Jacobi matrix, i.e. applying the same matrix over several integration steps. The problem of freezing is solved rather easy in those methods, the stages of which are computed using some iterative processes. For non-iterative numerical formulas the freezing is quite a difficult problem. In this study, the costs reduction was achieved by combining explicit and L-stable methods using the criterion of stability in calculations. Results. The author has created an algorithm of variable structure integration, based on the explicit scheme of the Runge-Kutta type and the L-stable method of the Rosenbrock type. Both schemes have the third order of accuracy. An efficient numerical formula was chosen according to the criterion of stability at each step of integration. Estimation of maximum eigen value, which is necessary to switch between the methods, for explicit numerical schemes was determined by power iterations using already computed stages, and using the Jacobi matrix norm for the Rosenbrock type method. The researcher also formulated inequalities for accuracy and stability control. The article adduces the results of calculations. Conclusions. The integration algorithm is aimed at solving stiff problems of high dimension. Numerical results confirm the efficiency of the constructed algorithm.

Аннотация: The paper offers a way of linearizing order conditions. It allows simplifying the investigation of (m,k)-methods. The authors have constructed the L-stable (4,2)-method of the fourth order and have obtained the inequality for accuracy control of calculations. The paper presents numerical results which confirm the eficiency of the alternating step algorithm.
Предложен способ линеаризации условий порядка, позволяющий упростить исследование (m,k)-методов решения жестких задач. Построен L-устойчивый (4,2)-метод четвертого порядка. Получено неравенство для контроля точности вычислений. Приведены результаты расчетов, подтверждающие эффективность алгоритма переменного шага.

Аннотация: This paper considers a liquid in a finite-size cylinder in which Marangoni instability occurs. The upper boundary of the liquid is free and deformable. The problem of the occurrence of convection in a cylindrical container is solved using the method of separation of variables. A homogeneous differential equation of the sixth order with constant coefficients and complex boundary conditions is obtained. An analytical expression for critical Marangoni numbers is derived for the case of monotonic perturbations. The case is considered where the liquid in the cylinder is weightless.

Аннотация: The largest part of solid minerals (with the exception of those which are at the earth's surface) is being extracted world-wide by surface and underground mining techniques, with adits, mines and other mine workings being used. A considerable amount of mineral deposits (including oil reservoirs) is located either close to a fault-line or immediately within the zone of high seismic activity. To prevent economic and environmental damage under the effect of an earthquake, thorough seismic monitoring of the area must be performed, as well as the study of all possible mechanisms of an earthquake occurrence. In analysing the trigger effect of moon-and sun-induced tidal forces on seismic activity, six great earthquakes which occurred close to equatorial latitude over the last 15 years have been considered. Based on the positions of the Sun and Moon during the day relative to the point mass, the maps of horizontal, vertical components and vector of gravitational forces per unit mass have been plotted. The developed technique can be applicable to a set of methods to study integration and stress unloading mechanisms at the boundaries of block structures.
