    Roche lobe effects on expanded upper atmospheres of short-periodic giant exoplanets

Аннотация: Theoretical studies and recent observational evidence of the expansion of the atmospheres of short-periodic exoplanets show that the atmospheres extend up to several planetary radii. This indicates that the atmospheres experience blow-off conditions. Because of the short orbital distance to their host stars, the expansion of the upper atmosphere is no longer radially symmetric, but depends on the direction to the central body, resulting in a deformation of the expanded atmosphere. We show the connection between atmospheric expansion, tidal forces and effects of the Roche potential and find that HD209458 b, OGLE-TR-10 b and OGLE-TR-111 b are most likely in a state of classical hydrodynamical blow-off because the distance where blow-off can occur is less than the distance to the Lagrangian point L1. On the other hand, OGLE-TR-56 b, OGLE-TR-113 b, OGLE-TR-132 b and TreS-1 experience a geometrical blow-off defined by the Roche lobe as proposed by Lecavelier des Etangs et al. (2004, A&A, 418, L1). Our results have important implications for the evolution of short periodic gas giants, because the Roche lobe overflow of the atmosphere can lead to lower mass loss rates over the exoplanets history, compared to gas giants which experience hydrodynamic expansion and loss unaffected by this boundary. Thus, massive exoplanets like OGLE-TR-56 b in very close orbital distances are subject to geometrical blow-off conditions, this results in a total mass loss for this particular exoplanet of the order of about 3 x 10(-2) M-pl over the planets age, even if current mass loss rates of about 2 x 10(11) g s(-1) are calculated. If the exoplanet effected by the geometrical blow-off is more massive, the mass loss rate is even lower. However, giant exoplanets like HD209458 b, OGLE-TR-10 b and OGLE-TR-111 b at orbital distances of about 0.05 AU may experience classical hydrodynamic blow-off conditions, which can result in higher mass loss rates. Thus, such planets may shrink to their core sizes during the X-ray and EUV active periods of their host stars as proposed by Lammer et al. ( 2003, ApJ, L121, 598) and Bara. e et al. (2004, A& A, 419, L13).

    Symmetries of Euler equations in Lagrangian coordinates

Аннотация: The transition from Eulerian to Lagrangian coordinates is a nonlocal transformation. In general, isomorphism should not take place between basic Lie groups of studied equations. Besides, in the case of plane and rotational symmetric motion hydrodynamic equations in Lagrangian coordinates are partially integrated. This fact introduces arbitrary functions, initial data, to the resulting systems and makes cuurently central the problem of group classification. It is stated that under a transition to Lagrangian coordinates, the main group becomes infinite-dimensional as well in space coordinates. The exclusive values of arbitrary functions of Lagrange coordinates (vorticity, momentum), at which the further group widening takes place, are found in [1]. Аннотация: In this paper we first demonstrate higher effectiveness of Hermite bicubic finite elements on rectangles and tricubic elements on cubes in comparison with the Lagrange ones of the same degree. Then we propose new Hermite biquadratic elements on rectangles and triquadratic elements on cubes. Finally we demonstrate some pointwise superconvergence properties of studied finite elements.

    A computational realization of a semi-Lagrangian method for solving the advection equation

Аннотация: A parallel implementation of a method of the semi-Lagrangian type for the advection equation on a hybrid architecture computation system is discussed. The difference scheme with variable stencil is constructed on the base of an integral equality between the neighboring time levels. The proposed approach allows one to avoid the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy restriction on the relation between time step and mesh size. The theoretical results are confirmed by numerical experiments. Performance of a sequential algorithm and several parallel implementations with the OpenMP and CUDA technologies in the C language has been studied.

Аннотация: The approach is proposed for the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for the two-dimensional motion of viscous heat-conducting gas. The discretization of equations is performed by a combination of a special semi-Lagrangian approximation for transport derivatives and the conforming finite element method with piecewise linear or bilinear basis functions for other terms. This approach gives a simpler structure of the discrete system of algebraic equations and does not involve the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy restriction on the relation between temporal and spatial steps. Numerical results for a supersonic flow around an obstacle for some Mach and Reynolds numbers are presented.

Аннотация: In this paper, the two-dimensional system of Navier-Stokes equations for a viscous incompressible fluid is considered. For its discretization, a combined approach is used: the semi-Lagrangian approximation for transport derivatives and the conforming finite element method for other terms. The velocity components are approximated by bilinear elements and the pressure is approximated by constant elements on rectangles. To ensure numerical stability of such a combination of finite elements, the local filtration of pressure is used. It is shown that the semi-Lagrangian approximation enables one to remove the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy restriction on time step and significantly improves properties of the stiffness matrix of the finite element method.

Аннотация: We consider a semi-Lagrangian algorithm and formulate the basic equality for a local temporal-spatial domain. This equality involves integrals over domains at neighboring temporal levels. To get the numerical scheme, we approximate each component of the equality within second-order accuracy. To compute an integral at the previous time level, we make the change of variables. After that the quadrature formulas are implemented with nodes and weights defined with the help of the Cauchy problem for a system of ordinary differential equations.

Аннотация: Предложены процедуры построения в локальных декартовых системах координат криволинейных лагранжевых двухсеточных конечных элементов (ДвКЭ) и сложных многосеточных конечных элементов (МнКЭ) для расчета трехмерных упругих композитных цилиндрических панелей и оболочек с различными коэффициентами наполнения. Расчеты панелей волокнистой структуры показывают, что максимальные эквивалентные напряжения и перемещения базовых и двухсеточных (многосеточных) дискретных моделей панелей отличаются на 1-8 %. Реализация метода конечных элементов для двух- и многосеточных дискретных моделей панелей требует в 10 <sup>3</sup> ?10 <sup>4</sup> раз меньше объема памяти ЭВМ и в 10 <sup>2</sup> ?10 <sup>3</sup> раз меньше временных затрат, чем для базовых.
The procedures for constructing the curvilinear Lagrangian double-grid finite elements (DGFE) and complex multigrid finite elements (MGFE) in the local Cartesian systems to calculate the elastic composite cylindrical panels and shells are offered. The calculations of the fibrous structure panels demonstrate that the maximum equivalent tension and displacement of the basic and double-grid (multigrid) discrete panel models differ by 1-8 %. The implementation of the finite element method for two- and multigrid discrete models of panels requires 10 <sup>3</sup> ? 10 <sup>4</sup> times less of the computer's memory and 10 <sup>2</sup> ?10 <sup>3</sup> times less of temporal costs than for the basic model.

Аннотация: In the paper, a semi-Lagrangian approximation is presented for the numerical solution of the two-dimensional time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations for viscous heat-conducting gas. In each equation, a combination of three first-order derivatives describing the transfer of a corresponding substance (density, velocity components, or internal energy) along trajectories is interpreted as the "transfer derivative" in the transfer direction. The other terms of the equations are written in the Euler form. On the sought-for time level, the standard conforming finite element method is realized for them with the linear elements on triangles and the bilinear ones on rectangles. The stencil adaptation along trajectories enables us to avoid the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy upper limit which describes the dependence of the time step on the mesh-size of the space triangulation. At the end of the paper, a numerical example illustrates the implementation of the described algorithms.

Аннотация: We construct an algorithm of the family of semi-Lagrangian methods for the three-dimensional advection problem. The algorithm is based on the integral balance equation for the cubic neighbourhood of a grid node. This equation involves integrals over two neighbouring time levels. To compute an integral at the previous time level, we make the domain transformation. This allows us to simplify appreciably the algorithm and to reduce the computation time in numerical examples. The algorithm is of first-order accuracy. Numerical experiments confirm the suitability of the proposed scheme.

Аннотация: In the paper, a mathematical model and a numerical algorithm are proposed for modeling the complex of phenomena which accompany the passage of a friable asteroid-comet body through the Earth's atmosphere: the material ablation, the dissociation of molecules, and the radiation. The proposed model is constructed on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations for viscous heat-conducting gas with an additional equation for the motion and propagation of a friable lumpy-dust material in air. The energy equation is modified for the relation between two its kinds: the usual energy of the translation of molecules (which defines the temperature and pressure) and the combined energy of their rotation, oscillation, electronic excitation, dissociation, and radiation. For the mathematical model of atmosphere, the distribution of density, pressure, and temperature in height is taken as for the standard atmosphere. An asteroid-comet body is taken initially as a round body consisting of a friable lumpy-dust material with corresponding density and significant viscosity which far exceed those for the atmosphere gas. A numerical algorithm is proposed for solving the initial-boundary problem for the extended system of Navier-Stokes equations. The algorithm is the combination of the semi-Lagrangian approximation for Lagrange transport derivatives and the conforming finite element method for other terms. The implementation of these approaches is illustrated by a numerical example.

Аннотация: In the paper the semi-Lagrangian method is considered in the context of its implementation with the CUDA technology. We have scrutinized the bottleneck of our sequential algorithm; its parallel versions are studied in detail; and the main reason of poor CUDA performance is clarified. As the result, we revise the computation of partial integrals in order to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Numerical experiments demonstrate good CUDA performance of the revised version of the algorithm.

We consider NVIDIA CUDA и OpenMP parallel programming technologies applying to a model problem for complex natural phenomena including a space science and technology. The paper describes a relation between effectiveness of parallel algorithm and the specific features of the architecture of a computation system which implements the aforesaid algorithm.

Аннотация: Редставлены два алгоритма для численного решения трехмерного уравнения неразрывности. Исследуемые методы могут быть использованы при численном моделировании обтекания объекта воздушным потоком.
We develop two algorithms of the family of semi-Lagrangian methods for the three-dimensional advection problem. These methods are useful for numerical modeling of airflow motion near an object.

Аннотация: In the paper, the mathematical model and numerical algorithm are proposed for modeling the complex of phenomena which accompany the passage of a friable asteroid-comet body through the Earth atmosphere.
Рассмотрено предсказание процессов взаимодействия астероидно-кометных тел с атмосферой Земли. Прохождение кометных осколков, а также дробящихся, аморфных, пылевых тел вызывает множество незакрытых вопросов, порождающих экзотические объяснения сопровождающих явлений.
