Аннотация: We give a compact non-technical presentation of two basic principles for reducing the description of nonequilibrium systems based on the quasi-equilibrium approximation. These two principles are: construction of invariant manifolds for the dissipative microscopic dynamics, and coarse-graining for the entropy-conserving microscopic dynamics. Two new results are presented: first, an application of the invariance principle to hybridization of micro-macro integration schemes is introduced, and is illustrated with non-linear dumbbell models; second, Ehrenfest's coarse-graining is extended to general quasi-equilibrium approximations, which gives the simplest way to derive dissipative equations from the Liouville equation in the short memory approximation.

Аннотация: Models of complex reactions in thermodynamically isolated systems often demonstrate evolution towards low-dimensional manifolds in the phase space. For this class of models, we suggest a direct method to construct such manifolds, and thereby to reduce the effective dimension of the problem. The approach realizes the invariance principle of the reduced description, it is based on iterations rather than on a small parameter expansion, it leads to tractable linear problems, and is consistent with thermodynamic requirements. The approach is tested with a model of catalytic reaction.

Аннотация: A detailed treatment of the classical Chapman-Enskog derivation of hydrodynamics is given in the framework of Grad's moment equations. Grad's systems are considered as the minimal kinetic models where the Chapman-Enskog method can be studied exactly, thereby providing the basis to compare various approximations in extending the hydrodynamic description beyond the Navier-Stokes approximation. Various techniques, such as the method of partial summation, Pad_e approximants, and invariance principle are compared both in linear and nonlinear situations.

Аннотация: The problem of propagation of long waves in a domain of an arbitrary form with the sufficiently smooth boundary on a sphere is considered. The boundary consists of “solid” parts passing along the coastline and “open liquid” parts passing through the water area. In general case the influence of the ocean through an open boundary is unknown and must be found together with components of a velocity vector and free surface elevation. For this purpose we use observation data of free surface elevation given only on a part of an “open liquid” boundary. We solve our ill-posed inverse problem by an approach based on the optimal control methods and adjoint equations theory.

Аннотация: Using idealized models of the magnetosheath and magnetospheric magnetic fields, plasma densities, and plasma flow, we test for the steady state viability of processes mediating the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere of Saturn. The magnetopause is modeled as an asymmetric paraboloid with a standoff distance of approximate to 25R(S). We test where on the magnetopause surface largescale reconnection may be affected by either a shear flow or diamagnetic drift due to a pressure gradient across the magnetopause boundary. We also test for the onset of the KelvinHelmholtz instability. We find that, for the solar wind and magnetosphere states considered, reconnection is inhibited on the dawn flank due to the large shear flows in this region. Additionally, most of the dawn and dusk equatorial region of the magnetopause is KelvinHelmholtz unstable, due to the presence of the dense magnetospheric plasma sheet and weak magnetic fields on either side of the magnetopause. This study is a followup to a previously published study of the solar wind interaction with Jupiter's magnetosphere.

Аннотация: We discuss the temporal variations and frequency distributions of solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field parameters during the solar minimum of 2007-2009 from measurements returned by the IMPACT and PLASTIC instruments on STEREO-A. We find that the density and total field strength were significantly weaker than in the previous minimum. The Alfv,n Mach number was higher than typical. This reflects the weakness of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) forces, and has a direct effect on the solar wind-magnetosphere interactions. We then discuss two major aspects that this weak solar activity had on the magnetosphere, using data from Wind and ground-based observations: i) the dayside contribution to the cross-polar cap potential (CPCP), and ii) the shapes of the magnetopause and bow shock. For i) we find a low interplanetary electric field of 1.3 +/- 0.9 mV m(-1) and a CPCP of 37.3 +/- 20.2 kV. The auroral activity is closely correlated to the prevalent stream-stream interactions. We suggest that the Alfven wave trains in the fast streams and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability were the predominant agents mediating the transfer of solar wind momentum and energy to the magnetosphere during this three-year period. For ii) we determine 328 magnetopause and 271 bow shock crossings made by Geotail, Cluster 1, and the THEMIS B and C spacecraft during a three-month interval when the daily averages of the magnetic and kinetic energy densities attained their lowest value during the three years under survey. We use the same numerical approach as in Fairfield's (J. Geophys. Res. 76, 7600, 1971) empirical model and compare our findings with three magnetopause models. The stand-off distance of the subsolar magnetopause and bow shock were 11.8 R-E and 14.35 R-E, respectively. When comparing with Fairfield's (1971) classic result, we find that the subsolar magnetosheath is thinner by similar to 1 R-E. This is mainly due to the low dynamic pressure which results in a sunward shift of the magnetopause. The magnetopause is more flared than in Fairfield's model. By contrast the bow shock is less flared, and the latter is the result of weaker MHD forces.

The subsolar standoff of the magnetopause has been shown to exhibit a bimodal probability distribution (Joy et al., 2002). Only the expanded magnetopause is considered, with a standoff of similar to 90 R-J. We test where on the magnetopause surface large-scale reconnection may be affected by either a shear flow or diamagnetic drift due to a pressure gradient across the magnetopause boundary. We also test for the onset of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. We find that reconnection is inhibited on the dawn flank due to the large shear flows in this region, regardless of magnetopause shape or interplanetary magnetic field orientation. The presence of a high energy plasma population in the magnetosphere may inhibit reconnection over much of the magnetopause area, except when the fields are antiparallel. Additionally, most of the dawn flank of the magnetopause is Kelvin-Helmholtz unstable, regardless of magnetopause asymmetry; and the dusk flank tailward of the planet is Kelvin-Helmholtz unstable when the magnetopause is highly oblate.

Аннотация: The upper-mantle structure was studied from first-arrival data along the Meteorite profile, run using underground nuclear explosions. Unlike the layered, slightly inhomogeneous models in the previous works, emphasis was laid on lateral inhomogeneity at the minimum possible number of abrupt seismic boundaries. We used forward ray tracing of the traveltimes of refracted and overcritical reflected waves. The model obtained is characterized by considerable velocity variations, from 7.7 km/s in the Baikal Rift Zone to 8.0-8.45 km/s beneath the Tunguska syneclise. A layer of increased velocity (up to 8.5-8.6 km/s), 30-80 km thick, is distinguished at the base of seismic lithosphere. The depth of the layer top varies from 120 km in the northern Siberian craton to 210 km in its southeastern framing. It has been shown that, with crustal density anomalies excluded, the reduced gravity field is consistent with the upper-mantle velocity model. В© 2013.

Аннотация: In this paper an original approach to analytical decision making support based on on-line analytical processing of multidimensional data is suggested. According to Dr. Codd's rules, the effectiveness of data analysis significantly depends on the data accessibility and transparency of an analytical model of domain. The method of constructing a conceptual OLAP-model as an integral analytical model of the domain is proposed. The method is illustrated by the example of the scientific activities domain. The integral analytical model includes all possible combinations of analyzed objects and gives them the opportunity to be manipulated ad-hoc. The suggested method consists in a formal concept analysis of measures and dimensions based on an expert knowledge about the structure of analyzing objects and their comparability. As a result, conceptual OLAP-model is represented as a concept lattice of multidimensional cubes. Concept lattice features allow the decision maker to discover the nonstandard analytical dependencies on the set of all actual measures and dimensions of the scientific activities domain. Of course all three components of computational modeling are actively developed: mathematical models of real aerodynamic processes, numerical algorithms, and high-performance computing. The most impressive progress has been made in the field of computing, though with a considerable complication of computer architecture. Numerical algorithms are developed more conservative. More precisely, they are offered and theoretically justified for more simple mathematical problems. Nevertheless, computational mathematics now has amassed a whole palette of numerical algorithms that can provide acceptable accuracy and interface between modern mathematical models in aerodynamics and high-performance computers. A significant step in this direction was the European Project ADIGMA whose positive experience will be used in International Project TRISTAM for further movement in the field of computational technologies for aerodynamics. This paper gives a general overview of objectives and approaches intended to use and a description of the recommended four-stage computer technology. В© 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Аннотация: A one-dimensional numerical model and a two-dimensional numerical model of the hydrodynamic and thermal structure of Lake Shira during summer have been developed, with several original physical and numerical features. These models are well suited to simulate the formation and dynamics of vertical stratification and provide a basis for an ecological water-quality model of the lake. They allow for the quantification of the vertical mixing processes that govern not only the thermal structure but also the nutrient exchange, and more generally, the exchange of dissolved and particulate matter between different parts of the lake. The outcome of the calculations has been compared with the field data on vertical temperature and salinity distributions in Lake Shira. Lake Shira is meromictic and exhibits very stable annual stratification. The stratification is so stable because of the high salinity of the water. If the water in Lake Shira were fresh and other parameters (depth, volume, and meteorology) were the same, as now, the lake would be mixed in autumn. Using the newly developed models and using common meteorological parameters, we conclude that Lake Shira will remain stratified in autumn as long as the average salinity is higher than 3%.

Аннотация: A large number and wide variety of lake ecosystem models have been developed and published during the past four decades. We identify two challenges for making further progress in this field. One such challenge is to avoid developing more models largely following the concept of others ('reinventing the wheel'). The other challenge is to avoid focusing on only one type of model, while ignoring new and diverse approaches that have become available ('having tunnel vision'). In this paper, we aim at improving the awareness of existing models and knowledge of concurrent approaches in lake ecosystem modelling, without covering all possible model tools and avenues. First, we present a broad variety of modelling approaches. To illustrate these approaches, we give brief descriptions of rather arbitrarily selected sets of specific models. We deal with static models (steady state and regression models), complex dynamic models (CAEDYM, CE-QUAL-W2, Delft 3D-ECO, LakeMab, LakeWeb, MyLake, PCLake, PROTECH, SALMO), structurally dynamic models and minimal dynamic models. We also discuss a group of approaches that could all be classified as individual based: super-individual models (Piscator, Charisma), physiologically structured models, stage-structured models and traitbased models. We briefly mention genetic algorithms, neural networks, Kalman filters and fuzzy logic. Thereafter, we zoom in, as an in-depth example, on the multi-decadal development and application of the lake ecosystem model PCLake and related models (PCLake Metamodel, Lake Shira Model, IPH-TRIM3D-PCLake). In the discussion, we argue that while the historical development of each approach and model is understandable given its 'leading principle', there are many opportunities for combining approaches. We take the point of view that a single 'right' approach does not exist and should not be strived for. Instead, multiple modelling approaches, applied concurrently to a given problem, can help develop an integrative view on the functioning of lake ecosystems. We end with a set of specific recommendations that may be of help in the further development of lake ecosystem models.
