Аннотация: Using idealized models of the magnetosheath and magnetosphere magnetic fields, plasma densities, and plasma flow, we test for the steady state viability of processes mediating the interaction between the solar wind and the Jovian magnetosphere. The magnetopause is modeled as an asymmetric paraboloid with variable asymmetry. The subsolar standoff of the magnetopause has been shown to exhibit a bimodal probability distribution (Joy et al., 2002). Only the expanded magnetopause is considered, with a standoff of similar to 90 R-J. We test where on the magnetopause surface large-scale reconnection may be affected by either a shear flow or diamagnetic drift due to a pressure gradient across the magnetopause boundary. We also test for the onset of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. We find that reconnection is inhibited on the dawn flank due to the large shear flows in this region, regardless of magnetopause shape or interplanetary magnetic field orientation. The presence of a high energy plasma population in the magnetosphere may inhibit reconnection over much of the magnetopause area, except when the fields are antiparallel. Additionally, most of the dawn flank of the magnetopause is Kelvin-Helmholtz unstable, regardless of magnetopause asymmetry; and the dusk flank tailward of the planet is Kelvin-Helmholtz unstable when the magnetopause is highly oblate.

    Reciprocal relations between kinetic curves

Аннотация: We study coupled irreversible processes. For linear or linearized kinetics with microreversibility, ẋ=Kx , the kinetic operator K is symmetric in the entropic inner product. This form of Onsager's reciprocal relations implies that the shift in time, exp(Kt), is also a symmetric operator. This generates the reciprocity relations between the kinetic curves. For example, for the Master equation, if we start the process from the i-th pure state and measure the probability pj(t) of the j-th state (j≠i), and, similarly, measure pi(t) for the process, which starts at the j-th pure state, then the ratio of these two probabilities pj(t)/pi(t) is constant in time and coincides with the ratio of the equilibrium probabilities. We study similar and more general reciprocal relations between the kinetic curves. The experimental evidence provided as an example is from the reversible water gas shift reaction over iron oxide catalyst. The experimental data are obtained using Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP) pulse-response studies. These offer excellent confirmation within the experimental error.

Аннотация: The propagation of the resonance electromagnetic wave accompanied by gas ionization is considered. Plasma is formed through initial associative processes followed by the action of electrons which gain energy when colliding with the excited atoms. The change in the nature of the radiation propagation results from both a decrease in the ground state atom density and an increase in the probability of the upper state atom de-excitation. Concrete estimates are made for cesium. The degree of gas ionization and the wave propagation velocity of transparency are calculated. В© 1981.

Аннотация: Methods used to calculate the reliability indices of structural components (the distribution function of remaining life, the probability of failure-free service, and the risk function) as applies to problems of the propagation of defects under a cyclic load are examined. The potentials of the method of "numeric experiments" are demonstrated in an example of the calculation of crack kinetics in a branch pipe in tension with bending. The reliability indices are calculated for a plane element with a crack by means of numeric integration of determining equations. It is possible to solve problems with different laws governing crack propagation and forms of density distribution for the size of the initial defect within the framework of these methods. A combination of approaches of fracture mechanics and reliability theory with numeric methods of calculation make it possible to evaluate the reliability indices of a defective structural component. Аннотация: In the present work, interest is centered on the theory of fracture and practical approaches to reliability estimation of unidirectional composite materials which are based on it. Fracture mechanics is considered not as a theory of macrocracks but as mechanics of fracture mechanisms of the composites with allowance made for probability estimation. A model of composite material with fibers eliminated from the carrying scheme and parameters specific to the stress-strain-damage state (SSDS) was considered. According to the model, during loading, self-accelerated energy rise is accounted for by structural damages growth - the catastrophe takes place. The model allows us to calculate the critical stress. The composites redistribute forces from overloading zones to neighboring ones by microstructural deformations and damages. It is the effect of reservation of carrying ability. Due to this effect, low-value probability of fracture is sufficiently less for the composite than for homogeneous materials. The approach allows us to evaluate the reliability function for Both static loading and fatigue.

Аннотация: The work presents long-standing CZCS-satellite-based data about spatial distribution of anomalies in chlorophyll concentration and temperature of the ocean. An anomaly criterion is proposed. Maps of Atlantic ocean areas with elevated probability of anomalies are given. Properties of anomalous zones in different parts of the Atlantic ocean are discussed. Satellite-based maps of anomaly coefficients for chlorophyll concentration and temperature in the Atlantic ocean have been shown to feature substantial differences, the zones of elevated anomaly of chlorophyll concentration and temperature - to be close only in the vicinity of the Amazon outflow into the Atlantic ocean. Along with fundamental knowledge about dynamics of biological phenomena in the ocean the methods described may be used to reveal deviations due to anthropogenic impact. The methods presented may be used to process SeaWiFS prograna data. The data derived may be used to analyze long-standing time series to estimate randomness of cunent changes. В©2002 COSPAR. The comparison procedure for the effectiveness of methods for discretization of the interval of values of a random variable at probability density estimation has been saggested. As an efficiency criterion the asymptotic expression of standard deviation of regression model of probability density has been used.
