Instability of the magnetopause with a finite curvature radius and velocity shear
[Text] : статья / I.L. Arshukova, N.V. Erkaev, H.K. Biernat // International journal of geomagnetism and aeronomy. - 2002. - Vol. 3, № 1. - p. 27–34

Аннотация: This article deals with the magnetohydrodynamic instability of the high magnetic shear magnetopause, which is considered to be a thin layer with a constant curvature radius and plasma velocity shear. In our model, the magnetic field and plasma density are assumed to be piecewise constant in three regions: in the magnetosphere adjacent to the magnetopause, in the magnetosheath, and inside a thin layer associated with the magnetopause. The plasma parameters and the magnetic field are assumed to obey the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. A Fourier analysis is used to calculate small perturbations of magnetic field and plasma parameters near the magnetopause in a linear approximation. The instability growth rate is obtained as a function of the angle between the velocity vector and the geomagnetic field direction for different plasma bulk speeds, wave numbers and curvature radii. The resulting instability is a mixture of interchange and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities on a surface with a nonzero curvature. The instability growth rate is an increasing function of the tangential velocity component perpendicular to the magnetic field. On the other hand, the growth rate is a decreasing function of the velocity component along the magnetic field.

Аннотация: The Chapman-Enskog series for shear stress is summed up in a closed form for a simple model of Grad moment equations. The resulting linear hydrodynamics is demonstrated to be stable for all wavelengths, and the exact asymptotic of the acoustic spectrum in the short-wave domain is obtained.

Аннотация: Using idealized models of the magnetosheath and magnetospheric magnetic fields, plasma densities, and plasma flow, we test for the steady state viability of processes mediating the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere of Saturn. The magnetopause is modeled as an asymmetric paraboloid with a standoff distance of approximate to 25R(S). We test where on the magnetopause surface largescale reconnection may be affected by either a shear flow or diamagnetic drift due to a pressure gradient across the magnetopause boundary. We also test for the onset of the KelvinHelmholtz instability. We find that, for the solar wind and magnetosphere states considered, reconnection is inhibited on the dawn flank due to the large shear flows in this region. Additionally, most of the dawn and dusk equatorial region of the magnetopause is KelvinHelmholtz unstable, due to the presence of the dense magnetospheric plasma sheet and weak magnetic fields on either side of the magnetopause. This study is a followup to a previously published study of the solar wind interaction with Jupiter's magnetosphere.

Аннотация: Using idealized models of the magnetosheath and magnetosphere magnetic fields, plasma densities, and plasma flow, we test for the steady state viability of processes mediating the interaction between the solar wind and the Jovian magnetosphere. The magnetopause is modeled as an asymmetric paraboloid with variable asymmetry. The subsolar standoff of the magnetopause has been shown to exhibit a bimodal probability distribution (Joy et al., 2002). Only the expanded magnetopause is considered, with a standoff of similar to 90 R-J. We test where on the magnetopause surface large-scale reconnection may be affected by either a shear flow or diamagnetic drift due to a pressure gradient across the magnetopause boundary. We also test for the onset of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. We find that reconnection is inhibited on the dawn flank due to the large shear flows in this region, regardless of magnetopause shape or interplanetary magnetic field orientation. The presence of a high energy plasma population in the magnetosphere may inhibit reconnection over much of the magnetopause area, except when the fields are antiparallel. Additionally, most of the dawn flank of the magnetopause is Kelvin-Helmholtz unstable, regardless of magnetopause asymmetry; and the dusk flank tailward of the planet is Kelvin-Helmholtz unstable when the magnetopause is highly oblate.

Аннотация: Oscillatory processes in media with microstructure under the action of concentrated impulse and time-periodic perturbations are analyzed within the Cosserat elasticity theory. According to the results of computations, such media are characterized by a resonance frequency equal to the frequency of natural oscillations of particle rotational motion. This frequency is a phenomenological parameter of a material. It was established that the oscillatory rotation of particles changes for monotone rotational motion with increasing intensity of shear strains.

On the acoustic approximation of thermomechanical model of a liquid crystal
/ V. M. Sadovskii // Proceedings of XLI International Summer School–Conference APM 2013. - 2013. - P493-500

Аннотация: Based on the equations of dynamics of a structurally inhomogeneous elastic medium taking into account the rotational degrees of freedom of the particles of microstructure, a simplified mathematical model is worked out for description of the wave motion in nematic liquid crystals under the influence of weak mechanical and thermal perturbations. It is shown that in the case of plane strain the shear stress in such a medium satisfies the Klein–Gordon equation, describing the oscillatory nature of particles rotation. The results of numerical computations shows that the natural frequency of rotational motion of the particles, determined by this equation, is the resonance characteristic of a material, and it is independent of the size of a sample and of the loading conditions.

Аннотация: We present measurements of oscillations in the electron density, ion density and ion velocity in the induced magnetosphere of Mars. The fundamental frequency of the oscillations is a few millihertz, but higher harmonics are present in the spectrum. The oscillations are observed in a region where there is a velocity shear in the plasma flow. The fundamental frequency is in agreement with computational results from an ideal-MHD model. An interpretation based on velocity-shear instabilities is described.

Аннотация: In this paper, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is studied by solving the ideal MHD equations for a compressible plasma. A transition layer of finite thickness between two plasmas, across which the magnitude of the velocity and the density change, is assumed. Growth rates are presented for the transverse case, i.e., the flow velocity is perpendicular to the magnetic field. If only the velocity changes across the boundary layer and the density is kept constant, an important quantity affecting the growth of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is the magnetosonic Mach number, which characterizes compressibility. The growth rates for the case when both, the velocity and the density, change are very sensitive to the ratio of the upper plasma density to the lower plasma density: a decrease of the density ratio yields a decrease of the growth rate. Including a density profile is very important for the application of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability to the solar wind flow around unmagnetized planets, e.g., Venus, where the plasma density increases from the magnetosheath to the ionosphere. Аннотация: It is known from Pioneer Venus measurements that at the Venusian ionopause wave-like structures develop, which can detach in the form of ionospheric plasma clouds. This phenomenon is assumed to occur due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, which can appear in large regions of the Venusian ionopause. Recent studies of Mars Global Surveyor measurements indicate that wave-like structures and plasma clouds also detach from the Martian ionopause. Therefore, these features seem to be common for the solar wind interaction of non-magnetized planets. We study the conditions at the Martian ionopause with respect to the occurrence of several MHD instabilities. The conditions in the magnetosheath are modeled by a semi-analytical MHD simulation that includes mass loading. The ionospheric parameter needed for the model calculations are taken from a global hybrid model. The stability of the Martian ionopause against the Kelvin-Helmholtz, the Rayleigh-Taylor, and the interchange instability is analyzed. Further, we suggest that including the Hall term in the description of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability gives a current in the planetary boundary layer resulting in a shear flow compared with the ionospheric plasma, which can lead to an unstable boundary layer near the subsolar point. Since the interchange instability depends on the curvature of the magnetic field lines, we additionally study the influence of the strong curvature of the Martian ionopause due to the localized, remnant, crustal magnetism appearing mainly in the southern hemisphere of Mars.     Ion loss on Mars caused by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability

Аннотация: Mars Global Surveyor detected cold electrons above the Martian ionopause, which can be interpreted as detached ionospheric plasma clouds. Similar observations by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter electron temperature probe showed also extreme spatial irregularities of electrons in the form of plasma clouds on Venus, which were explained by the occurrence of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Therefore, we suggest that the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability may also detach ionospheric plasma clouds on Mars. We investigate the instability growth rate at the Martian ionopause resulting from the flow of the solar wind for the case where the interplanetary magnetic field is oriented normal to the flow direction. Since the velocity shear near the subsolar point is very small, this area is stable with respect to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. We found that the highest flow velocities are reached at the equatorial flanks near the terminator plane, while the maximum plasma density in the terminator plane appears at the polar areas. By comparing the instability growth rate with the magnetic barrier formation time, we found that the instability can evolve into a non-linear stage at the whole terminator plane but preferably at the equatorial flanks. Escape rates of O+ ions due to detached plasma clouds in the order of about 2 x 10(23)-3 x 10(24) s(-1) are found. Thus, atmospheric loss caused by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability should be comparable with other non-thermal loss processes. Further, we discuss our results in view of the expected observations of heavy ion loss rates by ASPERA-3 on board of Mars Express. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: This article deals with the magnetohydrodynamic instability of a thin layer which is characterized by a high magnetic shear, a constant curvature radius, and a plasma velocity shear. The magnetic field and the plasma parameters are considered to be piecewise constant inside the layer and in the regions adjacent to the layer. The plasma parameters and the magnetic field are assumed to obey the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. Fourier analysis is used to calculate small perturbations of the magnetic field and plasma parameters near the layer in linear approximation. The instability growth rate is obtained as a function of different parameters: the magnetic shear angle, the velocity direction angle, the tangential plasma velocity, the layer thickness, the wave number, and the curvature radius. The resulting instability is a mixture of interchange and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities on a surface with nonzero curvature. For a fixed velocity shear and curvature radius, the instability growth has a maximum in the case of antiparallel magnetic fields (maximal magnetic shear). This growth rate is an increasing function of the tangential velocity component perpendicular to the magnetic field, and a decreasing function of the velocity component along the magnetic field. The instability is stronger for smaller curvature radius. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Аннотация: The study of the interaction of the solar wind with magnetized and unmagnetized planets forms a central topic of space research. Focussing on planetary magnetosheaths, we review some major developments in this field. Magnetosheath structures depend crucially on the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field, the solar wind Alfven Mach number, the shape of the obstacle (axisymmetric/non-axisymmetric, etc.), the boundary conditions at the magnetopause (low/high magnetic shear), and the degree of thermal anisotropy of the plasma. We illustrate the cases of Earth, Jupiter and Venus. The terrestrial magnetosphere is axisymmetric and has been probed in situ by many spacecraft. Jupiter's magnetosphere is highly non-axisymmetric. Furthermore, we study magnetohydrodynamic effects in the Venus magnetosheath.

Аннотация: We compare numerical results obtained from a steady-state MHD model of solar wind flow past the terrestrial magnetosphere with documented observations made by the AMPTE!IRM spacecraft on 24 October, 1985, during an inbound crossing of the magnetosheath. Observations indicate that steady conditions prevailed during this about 4 hour-long crossing. The magnetic shear at spacecraft entry into the magnetosphere was 15 degrees. A steady density decrease and a concomitant magnetic field pile-up were observed during the 40 min interval just preceding the magnetopause crossing. In this plasma depletion layer (1) the plasma beta dropped to values below unity; (2) the flow speed tangential to the magnetopause was enhanced; and (3) the local magnetic field and velocity vectors became increasingly more orthogonal to each other as the magnetopause was approached (Phan er al., 1994). We model parameter variations along a spacecraft orbit approximating that of AMPTE/IRM, which was at slightly southern GSE latitudes and about 1.5 h post-noon Local Time. We model the magnetopause as a tangential discontinuity, as suggested by the observations, and take as input solar wind parameters those measured by AMPTE/IRM just prior to its bow shock crossing. We find that computed field and plasma profiles across the magnetosheath and plasma depletion layer match all observations closely. Theoretical predictions on stagnation line flow near this low-shear magnetopause are confirmed by the experimental findings. Our theory does not give, and the data on this pass do not show, any localized density enhancements in the inner magnetosheath region just outside the plasma depletion layer.

Аннотация: We present maximum growth rate charts of the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) and Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instabilities at the dayside magnetopause (MP), considering two orientations of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) (due north and 30 degrees west of north). We input parameters in the plasma depletion layer calculated from an MHD code. We study both a sharp MP transition and an MP with an attached boundary layer ("thin" and "thick" approximations, respectively). Our analysis applies to wavelengths (lambda) from similar to 2 x 10(3) km to less than or equal to 9 R-E. Thin model results are as follows: For a stationary MP and due north IMF, the off-noon, low-latitude MP is very low shear (less than or equal to 10 degrees) and is substantially KH active. With an IMF inclined to north, extremely low shear, KH-active regions are confined to two strips, one in each hemisphere, where short lambda perturbations are generated, which propagate as surface ripples on the high-latitude, duskside MP. For a sunward accelerating magnetopause and IMF north, a large part of the MP is unstable. With an inclined IMF, the KH+RT unstable strips are broader and growth rates are higher. Thick model results are as follows: For IMF due north and a stationary MP, the middle-to high-latitude MP is stable. At middle to low latitudes, the inner edge of the boundary layer (IEBL) is active, except fora 2-hour local time band on either side of noon. For the inclined IMF, the MP is stable for long lambda, with activity for short lambda confined to two strips, as before, with slightly reduced growth rates. For the IEBL, a clear dawn-dusk asymmetry in KH activity is evident. When the MP accelerates sunward and the IMF points north, we have to consider also the lambda of the perturbation. For short lambda, growth rates are enhanced with respect to stationarity at both the NIP and the IEBL. While there are extensive regions of negligible growth at the MP, the entire IEBL is RT + KH unstable. We give an example of a long lambda perturbation where both interfaces are coupled and oscillate together. Finally, for an inclined IMF, we have at the MP unstable strips which are wider and have higher growth rates. The IEBL, by contrast, is completely destabilized, with larger growth rates than under stationary conditions.

Аннотация: Together with the magnetic shear across the magnetopause, the solar wind Alfven Mach number, M-A infinity plays a central role in determining the structure of the magnetosheath. Recent theoretical modeling has shown, in particular, that as M-A infinity decreases, the region adjacent to the sunward side of the magnetopause where the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) exerts a strong influence on the flow (i.e., the so-called ''plasma depletion layer''), is no longer confined to a thin layer similar to 0.3 Earth radii (R-E) thick but occupies an increasingly larger fraction of the magnetosheath. Furthermore, the model predicts the possibility of a plasma depletion layer for low M-A infinity, irrespective of the size of the magnetic shear at the magnetopause, In this paper we study three examples of low latitude ISEE 2 passes through the dayside magnetosheath near noon: December 3, 1979; October 5, 1979; and November 11, 1979, In all three examples, MA, was lower than normal. During the December 3 pass (which we treat qualitatively), we find evidence of a plasma depletion layer when the IMF was pointing south, On the other two passes (which we study quantitatively), the interplanetary magnetic field was strongly northward pointing, leading to low magnetic shear at the respective magnetopause crossings, The October 5 pass was under steady interplanetary conditions and we find good agreement between theory and data, Temporal variations of the interplanetary medium during the November 11 pass necessitated an extension of the steady state theory to encompass piecewise steady (on average) interplanetary conditions, Better agreement with the data results when the theory is extended further to correct the total pressure at the sunward side of the magnetopause by integrating the magnetic tension term across the layer. For wide plasma depletion layers, this correction can be substantial.

Аннотация: Recently, analytical solutions for the nonlinear Couette flow demonstrated the relevance of the lattice Boltzmann (LB) models to hydrodynamics beyond the continuum limit [S. Ansumali et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 124502 (2007)]. In this paper, we present a systematic study of the simplest LB kinetic equation—the nine-bit model in two dimensions—in order to quantify it as a slip flow approximation. Details of the aforementioned analytical solution are presented, and results are extended to include a general shear- and force-driven unidirectional flow in confined geometry. Exact solutions for the velocity, as well as for pertinent higher-order moments of the distribution functions, are obtained in both Couette and Poiseuille steady-state flows for all values of rarefaction parameter (Knudsen number). Results are compared with the slip flow solution by Cercignani, and a good quantitative agreement is found for both flow situations. Thus, the standard nine-bit LB model is characterized as a valid and self-consistent slip flow model for simulations beyond the Navier-Stokes approximation.

Gas–liquid flow -- Entrainment -- Interface deformation -- Liquid bridge -- Free surface deformation -- Viscosity contrast

Аннотация: Experiments and numerical simulations were carried out for shear-driven two-phase flows in a confined volume of liquid under conditions of normal gravity. The geometry corresponds to a cylindrical liquid bridge surrounded by a concentric annular gas channel with external solid walls. The internal part consists of solid supports at the bottom and top, while the central part is a liquid zone filled with a viscous liquid and kept in its position by surface tension. Gas enters into the annular duct, flows between solid walls and upon reaching the liquid zone entrains initially quiescent liquid. The flow dynamics is governed by the Navier–Stokes equations in both fluids, which are numerically solved in the exact experimental geometry taking into account interface deformation by gravity. In the experiments 5 cSt silicone oil and air were used as test fluids and the flow was monitored by means of particle tracking velocimetry. The experiments were performed for unit aspect ratio (the ratio of liquid zone length to its radius), while the simulations of shear-driven flow were carried out for a wide range of parameters. A particular attention is focused on the effect of free surface shape and fluids viscosity contrast on the interfacial flow dynamics. The current study suggests a linear dependence between velocities of gas and liquid when the viscosity of the liquid is larger by two orders of magnitude than that of gas. Another relation is proposed when the fluids viscosity ratio, μl/μg, is less than 50.
