Аннотация: The discovery of transiting 'super-Earths' with inflated radii and known masses, such as Kepler-11b-f, GJ 1214b and 55 Cnc e, indicates that these exoplanets did not lose their nebula-captured hydrogen-rich, degassed or impact-delivered protoatmospheres by atmospheric escape processes. Because hydrodynamic blow-off of atmospheric hydrogen atoms is the most efficient atmospheric escape process we apply a time-dependent numerical algorithm which is able to solve the system of 1D fluid equations for mass, momentum and energy conservation to investigate the criteria under which 'super-Earths' with hydrogen-dominated upper atmospheres can experience hydrodynamic expansion by heating of the stellar soft X-rays and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation and thermal escape via blow-off. Depending on orbit location, XUV flux, heating efficiency and the planet's mean density our results indicate that the upper atmospheres of all 'super-Earths' can expand to large distances, so that except for Kepler-11c all of them experience atmospheric mass-loss due to Roche lobe overflow. The atmospheric mass loss of the studied 'super-Earths' is one to two orders of magnitude lower compared to that of 'hot Jupiters' such as HD 209458b, so that one can expect that these exoplanets cannot lose their hydrogen envelopes during their remaining lifetimes.

Аннотация: In the paper, the Goursat problem-classification of nonlinear hyperbolic differential equations possessing two characteristic invariants-is considered. An algorithm for finding the characteristic invariants is described. On the basis of the algorithm implemented in REDUCE, the characteristic invariants of two Laine's equations are verified. One of them is shown to have invariants of the second and third orders. This equation shows that the Goursat problem, apparently, is still open. Computer calculations show that the characteristic invariants of the second Laine's equation given in his paper are incorrect.

Аннотация: An algorithm for numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations for two-dimensional motion of a viscous heat-conducting gas is proposed in the paper. The discretization of the equations is performed by a combination of the method of trajectories for the substantive derivative and the finite element method with piecewise-bilinear basis functions for other summands. Results of numerical study of the supersonic flow structure are presented for a flat channel in its step expansion zone for a wide range of Mach and Reynolds numbers. Velocity and pressure fields are investigated, the vortex structure of the circulation flow is studied in the domain after the step.

Аннотация: A system of equations of geophysical hydrothermodynamics of the ocean in the Boussinesq, hydrostatic, and 'rigid lid' approximations is used for description of stratified flows in landlocked reservoirs. A numerical algorithm is considered for flows two-dimensional in the vertical plane. This algorithm is based on the method of splitting with respect to physical processes, the finite element method, and the upstream difference scheme. The numerical algorithm has been checked on test problems. The model was used for determination of wind circulation and vertical distributions of temperature and salinity in the Shira Lake. The results of numerical modelling are in good agreement with actual data.

Аннотация: Mathematical models of the dynamics of elastic-plastic and granular media are formulated as variational inequalities for hyperbolic operators with one-sided constraints describing the transition of a material in plastic state. On this basis a priori integral estimates are constructed in characteristic cones of operators, from which follows the uniqueness and continuous dependence on initial data of solutions of the Cauchy problem and of the boundary-value problems with dissipative boundary conditions. With the help of an integral generalization of variational inequalities the relationships of strong discontinuity in dynamic models of elastic-plastic and granular media are obtained, whose analysis allows us to calculate velocities of shock waves and to construct discontinuous solutions. Original algorithms of solution correction are developed which can be considered as a realization of the splitting method with respect to physical processes. В© 2013 Springer-Verlag.

    Numerical simulation of deformation of a metal foam

Аннотация: Mathematical model for the description of deformation of a porous metal is constructed on the basis of generalized rheological method. In this method a new rheological element, so-called rigid contact, is used to describe the uniaxial deformation of materials with different resistance to tension and compression. Change in the resistance of a porous metal to external loads, when the collapse of pores occurs, is taken into account by means of the von Mises–Schleicher strength condition. Irreversible deformation is described with the help of yield condition, modeling the plastic loss of stability of porous skeleton. For a homogeneous porous medium the fields of displacements and stresses in the problem of radial expansion of spherical and cylindrical cavities under the action of internal pressure considering the effect of collapse of pores are constructed in closed form. The algorithm of numerical realization of the model of dynamic deformation of metal foams on multiprocessor computer systems of the cluster type is worked out

    Multispeed models in off-lattice Boltzmann simulations

Аннотация: The lattice Boltzmann method is a highly promising approach to the simulation of complex flows. Here, we realize recently proposed multispeed lattice Boltzmann models [S. Chikatamarla et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 190601 (2006)] by exploiting the flexibility offered by off-lattice Boltzmann methods. The approach is based on the general characteristic-based algorithm for off-lattice Boltzmann simulations that preserves all appealing properties of the standard lattice Boltzmann method while extending the method to unstructured grids. We show that the use of multispeed models indeed gives rise to major improvements in accuracy. The suggested approach thus renders truly large-scale off-lattice Boltzmann computations practical.

That object is named quasi-equilibrium grid (QEG), while the procedure quasi-equilibrium grid algorithm (QEGA). Extensions of the QEM notion are also suggested. The QEGA is a numerical tool which can be used to find a grid-based approximation for the locus of minima of a convex function under some linear constraints. The method is validated by construction of one and two-dimensional grids for a model of hydrogen oxidation reaction.

Аннотация: We investigate the efficiency of the atmospheric mass loss due to hydrodynamic blow-off over the lifetime of the exoplanet HD209458b by studying numerically its hydrogen wind for host star X-ray and EUV (XUV) fluxes between 1 and 100 times that of the present Sun. We apply a time-dependent numerical algorithm which is able to solve the system of hydrodynamic equations straight through the transonic point of the flow including Roche lobe effects. The mass loss rates are calculated as functions of the absorbed energy in the thermosphere. Depending on the heating efficiency for a hydrogen-rich thermosphere the maximum temperature obtained in our study at 1.5R(p1) by neglecting IR cooling is about 5000-10,000 K for heating efficiencies of 10% and 60%, respectively. We find that the upper atmosphere of HD209458b experiences hydrodynamic blow-off even at such low temperatures if one does not neglect gravitational effects caused by the proximity of the planet to its Roche lobe boundary. Depending on the heating efficiency, we find from the solution of the hydrodynamic equations of mass, momentum, and energy balance that energy-limited mass loss rate estimations overestimate the realistic mass loss rate at present time for HD209458b by several times. Using the maximum heating efficiency for hydrogen-rich atmospheres of 60% we find that HD209458b may experience an atmospheric mass loss rate at present time of about 3.5 x 10(10) g s(-1). The mass loss rate evolves to higher values for higher XUV fluxes expected during the early period of the planet's host star evolution, reaching values of several times 10(12) gs(-1). The integrated mass loss is found to be between 1.8% and 4.4% of the present mass of HD209458b. We found that the influence of the stellar tidal forces on atmospheric loss (the Roche lobe effect) is not significant at 0.045 AU. For a similar exoplanet, but at closer orbital distances <= 0.02 AU, the combined effect of the Roche lobe and the high XUV radiation result in much higher thermal loss rates of about 2.6 x 10(11) g s(-1) and even more for early stages. This leads to a total loss over 4 Gyr of 27.5% of the planetary mass. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: We study features of flow around Venus using a numerical algorithm to integrate the dissipationless magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, which includes from the start magnetic forces on the flow. We show first that, contrary to previous estimates based on gas dynamics, for a reasonable Alfven Mach number the MI-ID-modelled subsolar magnetosheath is nearly as thick as that obtained from observations. Concentrating next on the region off the subsolar line we present model results for the variation of all plasma and field parameters along paths normal to the ionopause for different values of the solar zenith angle. Аннотация: In this paper, a full multigrid algorithm with a symmetric V-cycle for a grid problem obtained by discretization of a second-order elliptic equation with quadratic finite elements on triangles is studied. The multigrid complexity of the algorithm is proved. This means that the number of arithmetic operations required to achieve the order of accuracy of an approximate solution equal to that of the discretization error linearly depends on the number of unknowns. The rate of convergence is found to be higher than that for linear finite elements in spite of the higher order of accuracy.
