Recovering data gaps through neural network methods
[Text] : статья / A.N. Gorban, A. Rossiev, N. Makarenko, Y. Kuandykov, V. Dergachev // International Journal of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy. - 2002. - Vol. 3, № 2. - p. 191–197

Аннотация: A new method is presented to recover the lost data in geophysical time series. It is clear that gaps in data are a substantial problem in obtaining correct outcomes about phenomenon in time series processing. Moreover, using the data with irregular coarse steps results in the loss of prime information during analysis. We suggest an approach to solving these problems, that is based on the idea of modeling the data with the help of small-dimension manifolds, and it is implemented with the help of a neural network. We use this approach on real data and show its proper use for analyzing time series of cosmogenic isotopes. In addition, multifractal analysis was applied to the recovered 14C concentration in the Earth's atmosphere.

Аннотация: Imprisonment of resonant radiation in an expanding sphere on the basis of the numerical solution of the rate balance equation for excited atoms and the transfer resonance radiation equation is investigated. Calculations of the escape factor for sphere at Doppler form of absorption and scattering profiles are executed. The effect of spectral shift of the absorption (emission) profile relative to the stationary one due to expansion of the medium is taken into account for the case when differential motion is described by velocity that varies linearly with the radius. The behaviour of the escape factor for the sphere is compared with the Sobolev theory. The numerical date for time dependence of intensity of afterglow and contour of the spectral line of leaving outside resonance radiation and spatial distribution of the excited atomic concentration are submitted as well.

Lie symmetry group -- equivalence transformation -- binary mixture -- convection -- Soret and Dufour

Аннотация: The differential equations describing convection in binary mixture with Soret and Dufour effects are considered. The symmetry classification of these equations with respect to the constant parameters is made. It is shown that a generator producing equivalence transformations of constants is defined accurately up to a factor arbitrarily depending on these constants. The equivalence group admitted by the governing equations is calculated. Using this group, a transformation connecting the systems with and without Soret and Dufour terms is derived. In pure Soret case, it reduces to a linear change of temperature and concentration. The presence of Dufour effect requires an additional change of thermal diffusivity and diffusion coefficient. A scheme for reducing an initial and boundary value problem for Soret–Dufour equations to a problem for the system without these effects is proposed.

Аннотация: The Method of Invariant Grid (MIG) is a model reduction technique based on the concept of slow invariant manifold (SIM). The MIG approximates the SIM by a set of nodes in the concentration space (invariant grid). In the present work, the MIG is applied to a realistic combustion system: an adiabatic constant volume reactor with H2–air at stoichiometric proportions. By considering the thermodynamic Lyapunov function of the detailed kinetic system, the notion of the quasi-equilibrium manifold (QEM) is adopted as an initial approximation to the SIM. One- and two-dimensional discrete approximations of the QEM (quasi-equilibrium grids) are constructed and refined via MIG to obtain the corresponding invariant grids. The invariant grids are tabulated and used to integrate the reduced system. Excellent agreement between the reduced and detailed kinetics is demonstrated.

Аннотация: Under study is an invariant solution of the equations of thermal diffusive convection which describes a stationary process of a binary mixture flow in a vertical layer under the action of the pressure gradient and the buoyancy force that depends nonlinearly on temperature and concentration. Some general properties of this solution are established and an existence theorem is proved. Analysis of the numerical solution of the problem is carried out in the cases of a power-law and exponential dependence of the buoyancy force on its argument.

A technique is suggested for solution of the inverse problem and numerical construction of the optimal observations plan. There is passed an evaluation test of the suggested models of observations planning and source parameters estimation by using the data of field investigations in the neighbourhood of steam electric power station in Dikkerson. The experimental and recovered source parameters are in satisfactory agreement.

Аннотация: The paper assesses coefficients and rates of ionization caused by an electron shock of atomic gas. It is meant that this gas is excited by resonance radiation and that ionization rate depends on the tune out of radiation frequency from the center of absorption line. It has been shown that in the central part of the line, where saturation is implemented, the coefficient depends only on characteristics of the resonance transition and ionization potential of the atom, and that the growth of electron concentration in time is exponential. When the far end of the line is tuned out, saturation disappears and dynamics of concentration growth becomes nonlinear.

chlorophyll -- primary production -- remote sensing -- Atlantic Ocean

Аннотация: To preserve and utilize the biosphere it is imperative that we understand the long-term dynamics of the primary production process on our planet. Variability of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean is one of the most important components of this process. However, size and access make its investigation labour-intensive. Dependence of primary production on high variability of hydrophysical phenomena in the ocean (fluctuations of currents, frontal zones, etc.) makes it difficult to locate points to measure chlorophyll concentration dynamics. To locate such quasistationary zones with respect to seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration by satellite data the Institute of Biophysics (Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch) has developed a geoinformation system. II use made it possible to locate such zones over the entire ocean. The work shows zones on the Central and Northern Atlantic. They form the ground to analyse perennial dynamics of chlorophyll concentration. The quasistationary zones are proposed for systematic monitoring of phytopigment concentration by space-borne and marine craft. (C) 1998 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Аннотация: One of the targets of the experiment IVIDIL (Influence Vibrations on Diffusion in Liquids) conducted on-board ISS was to study the response of binary mixtures to vibrational forcing when the density gradient results from thermal and compositional variations. Compositional variations were created by the Soret effect and can strengthen or weaken the overall density gradient and, consequently, the response to vibrational forcing. We present the results of two experimental runs conducted on-board ISS in the frame of the experiment IVIDIL for low and strong vibrational forcing. The experimental observations revealed that a significant mean flow is set within 2 minutes after imposing vibrations and later in time it varies weakly and slowly due to the Soret effect. A mathematical model has been developed to compute the thermal and concentration fields in the experiment IVIDIL and verify the accuracy of picture processing based on the classical approach used in non-convective systems with the Soret effect. The effect of temperature and concentrations perturbations by joint action of vibrational convection and Soret effect on long time scale are carefully examined. The model demonstrates that image processing used for non-convective systems is suitable for the systems with vibration-affected thermodiffusion experiment.

Аннотация: We study the effect of physical, chemical and biological processes on gas exchange of CO2 in the air-water system in Lake Baikal. Photosynthesis of aquatic biota is known to play a crucial role in changing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the water. Fluorescent methods are considered to be of high performance in problems of determining quantitative characteristics of biomass, however they require preliminary calibration directly for a specific type of plankton. In the pelagic zone of Lake Baikal the species composition, quantitative and spatial distribution of phytoplankton are characterized by strong spatial and temporal variability. Therefore, the fluorescent devices calibration on a single reference does not provide acceptable accuracy of quantitative assessment of the biomass. The results discussed in the paper were obtained by shipboard measurements during the Baikal campaign of 2010-2011. Correlation between the biomass in 25-meter water layer and the integral value of the fluorescent signal in this layer was obtained for calibration. The report discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the chosen methods and the results of retrieval of the vertical profiles of the biomass for stations in the pelagic zone of Lake Baikal in spring for the 2010-2011 biennium.

Аннотация: Seasonal dynamics of phytopigment concentrations in the ocean is one of the key factors indicating the types and intensity of hydrobiological exchange processes in the ocean surface layer. Thanks to the efficient operation of the SeaWiFS equipment for the last 7 years we have managed to carry out statistical analysis of image time series, which is necessary for estimation of reliability of investigations of oscillatory hydrobiological processes on a global scale. Using the autocorrelation method, we revealed a pronounced heterogeneity of the types of seasonal dynamics in the ocean. Statistically significant seasonal dynamics of phytopigment concentrations exists only at 19% of the area of the Global Ocean. On 51% of the area seasonal dynamics is disturbed essentially so, that becomes statistically insignificant and is absent at 30%. The most interesting feature of the pattern obtained was the diversity of the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll concentration under similar climatic conditions. Another interesting feature of such data presentation is that two types of seasonal dynamics - yearly and half-yearly - were defined. The detected zonality will provide the basis for more efficient development and application of ecological modeling, taking into account real-life hydrobiological and hydrological conditions. Аннотация: To preserve the biosphere and to use it efficiently, it is necessary to gain a deep insight into the dynamics of the primary production process on our planet. Variability of chlorophyll concentration in the ocean is one of the most important components of this process. These investigations are, however, very labor-consuming, because of the difficulties related to the accessibility of the water surface and its large size. In this work long-term changes in chlorophyll concentration in the surface layer of the ocean have been analyzed on the basis of the CZCS data for 7.5 years from 1979 to 1986 and the SeaWiFS data from 1997 to 2004. It has been shown that the average chlorophyll concentration calculated in all investigated areas varies moderately. However, when analyzing spatially local trends, the areas have been detected that have significant rise and fall of chlorophyll concentrations. Some interesting features of the long-term dynamics of chlorophyll concentration have been found. The opposite directions of long-term trends (essential increase or decrease) cannot be explained only by large-scale hydrological phenomena in the ocean (currents, upwellings, etc.). The measured chlorophyll concentration results from the balance between production and destruction processes. Which process dominates is determined by various hydrophysical, hydrobiological, and climatic processes, leading to sharp rises or falls of the concentration. It is important to estimate the scale of the areas in which this or that process dominates. Therefore, the study addresses not only the dynamics of the mean value but also the dynamics of the areas in which the dominance of certain factors has led to a sharp fall or rise in chlorophyll concentration. Thus, the obtained results can be used to estimate long-term changes in the ocean biota. В© 2006 COSPAR.

Аннотация: The work presents long-standing CZCS-satellite-based data about spatial distribution of anomalies in chlorophyll concentration and temperature of the ocean. An anomaly criterion is proposed. Maps of Atlantic ocean areas with elevated probability of anomalies are given. Properties of anomalous zones in different parts of the Atlantic ocean are discussed. Satellite-based maps of anomaly coefficients for chlorophyll concentration and temperature in the Atlantic ocean have been shown to feature substantial differences, the zones of elevated anomaly of chlorophyll concentration and temperature - to be close only in the vicinity of the Amazon outflow into the Atlantic ocean. Along with fundamental knowledge about dynamics of biological phenomena in the ocean the methods described may be used to reveal deviations due to anthropogenic impact. The methods presented may be used to process SeaWiFS prograna data. The data derived may be used to analyze long-standing time series to estimate randomness of cunent changes. В©2002 COSPAR. Аннотация: The work presents the data on the spatial distribution of temperature anomalies in the Global Ocean, based on the long-term measurements with the AVHRR satellite equipment. It is noteworthy that such results can be only obtained by using long time series of satellite images. To obtain them by ship-borne methods is actually impossible. The proposed anomaly criterion is equal to a difference between minimum/maximum and average temperature, normed for the mean square deviation. The difference is calculated from the whole time series (with regard to a season). Based on this criterion, anomalies can be distinguished on the background of usual seasonal dynamics at various absolute values of deviations of the measured parameter. Besides, rare, single, fluctuations can be also revealed. Based on the proposed criterion, connected zones have been defined. These zones occur almost in every part of the Global Ocean. The data obtained have been analyzed in association with the CZCS (1978-1986) and SeaWiFS satellite images in order to compare them with the areas of anomalous dynamics of chlorophyll concentration and the regions quasistationary in the seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll. Anomalies in the temperature dynamics are of exceptional importance for the formation of climatic deviations; they affect the ocean-atmosphere interaction and reflect variations in the hydrological structure of the surface waters. The work presents a comparison with the dynamics of chlorophyll concentration distribution determined from the SeaWiFS data for the Atlantic Ocean. В© 2003 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
