Аннотация: Computational aerodynamics is a key technology in aircraft design which is ahead of physical experiment and complements it. Of course all three components of computational modeling are actively developed: mathematical models of real aerodynamic processes, numerical algorithms, and high-performance computing. The most impressive progress has been made in the field of computing, though with a considerable complication of computer architecture. Numerical algorithms are developed more conservative. More precisely, they are offered and theoretically justified for more simple mathematical problems. Nevertheless, computational mathematics now has amassed a whole palette of numerical algorithms that can provide acceptable accuracy and interface between modern mathematical models in aerodynamics and high-performance computers. A significant step in this direction was the European Project ADIGMA whose positive experience will be used in International Project TRISTAM for further movement in the field of computational technologies for aerodynamics. This paper gives a general overview of objectives and approaches intended to use and a description of the recommended four-stage computer technology. В© 2012 American Institute of Physics.

Аннотация: Background: Protein translation is a multistep process which can be represented as a cascade of biochemical reactions (initiation, ribosome assembly, elongation, etc.), the rate of which can be regulated by small non-coding microRNAs through multiple mechanisms. It remains unclear what mechanisms of microRNA action are the most dominant: moreover, many experimental reports deliver controversial messages on what is the concrete mechanism actually observed in the experiment. Nissan and Parker have recently demonstrated that it might be impossible to distinguish alternative biological hypotheses using the steady state data on the rate of protein synthesis. For their analysis they used two simple kinetic models of protein translation. Results: In contrary to the study by Nissan and Parker, we show that dynamical data allow discriminating some of the mechanisms of microRNA action. We demonstrate this using the same models as developed by Nissan and Parker for the sake of comparison but the methods developed (asymptotology of biochemical networks) can be used for other models. We formulate a hypothesis that the effect of microRNA action is measurable and observable only if it affects the dominant system (generalization of the limiting step notion for complex networks) of the protein translation machinery. The dominant system can vary in different experimental conditions that can partially explain the existing controversy of some of the experimental data. Conclusions: Our analysis of the transient protein translation dynamics shows that it gives enough information to verify or reject a hypothesis about a particular molecular mechanism of microRNA action on protein translation. For multiscale systems only that action of microRNA is distinguishable which affects the parameters of dominant system (critical parameters), or changes the dominant system itself. Dominant systems generalize and further develop the old and very popular idea of limiting step. Algorithms for identifying dominant systems in multiscale kinetic models are straightforward but not trivial and depend only on the ordering of the model parameters but not on their concrete values. Asymptotic approach to kinetic models allows putting in order diverse experimental observations in complex situations when many alternative hypotheses co-exist.

Аннотация: We report experimental evidence of convection caused by translational vibration of nonuniformly heated fluid in low gravity. The theory of vibrational convection in weightlessness is well developed but direct experimental proof has been missing. An innovative point of the experiment is the observation of a temperature field in the front and side views of the cubic cell. In addition, particle tracing is employed. The evolution of this field is studied systematically in a wide range of frequencies and amplitudes. The flow structures reported in previous numerical studies are confirmed. The transition from four-vortex flow to the pattern with three vortices is observed in the transient state.

    Thermovibrational Convection in Microgravity: Preparation of a Parabolic Flight Experiment

Аннотация: This work describes the preparation of the future experiments on thermovibrational convection in microgravity during parabolic flights. The experimental setup for observing thermovibrational flows is designed. It consists of a cubic cell with liquid, which is subjected to controlled vibration, and equipment for registering velocity and temperature fields with a help of optical digital interferometry. The question of choosing working liquid and control parameters of the experiment is addressed. A 3D numerical simulation of thermovibrational convection in a cubic cavity is performed for real parabolic flight conditions. The study is aimed at estimating the values of physical quantities that manifest the presence of thermovibrational flows and can be experimentally measured during short microgravity time (20 s).

Аннотация: The IVIDIL (Influence of VIbrations on DIffusion in Liquids) experiment was aimed at utilizing the International Space Station for investigating the effects of vibrations on liquid diffusion and thermodiffusion. The SODI-IVIDIL project of ESA is gathering together European, Canadian and Russian researchers with complementary skills to prepare and carry out the experiment, to process the raw data and perform numerical modeling of the phenomena. The experiment IVIDIL started on the October 5, 2009. In total 55 experimental runs were successfully completed by 20 January, 2010. A general description of the ISS facility related to the diffusion experiments and accessible for European researchers is briefly presented and some details about IVIDIL instrument are given. The scientific interest of this short article is focused on one of the objectives of the experiment: performing precise measurements of diffusion and thermodiffusion coefficients for binary mixtures in the absence of gravity. We demonstrate possibility of the experimental environment and report on the first results related to measurements of mass transport coefficients in the mixture with the negative Soret effect: 10% isopropanol (IPA)–90% water.

Аннотация: The effect has been studied of inoculation of seeds of wheat with two species of rhizospheric microorganisms, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Pseudomonas putida - on young plant growth with complete and with nitrogen deficit mineral nutrition. With complete mineral medium, plants grown from seeds inoculated with bacteria of Pseudomonas genus (experiment plants) have been found to have better growth over plants not inoculated with these bacteria (control plants). The experiment plants had increased transpiration and their biomass had higher organic nitrogen content. With nitrogen deficit medium, the plants inoculated with bacteria and those without them, have not revealed changes in growth. Neither case demonstrated competition of microorganisms with plants for nitrogen sources. (C) 1997 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Аннотация: One of the targets of the experiment IVIDIL (Influence Vibrations on Diffusion in Liquids) conducted on-board ISS was to study the response of binary mixtures to vibrational forcing when the density gradient results from thermal and compositional variations. Compositional variations were created by the Soret effect and can strengthen or weaken the overall density gradient and, consequently, the response to vibrational forcing. We present the results of two experimental runs conducted on-board ISS in the frame of the experiment IVIDIL for low and strong vibrational forcing. The experimental observations revealed that a significant mean flow is set within 2 minutes after imposing vibrations and later in time it varies weakly and slowly due to the Soret effect. A mathematical model has been developed to compute the thermal and concentration fields in the experiment IVIDIL and verify the accuracy of picture processing based on the classical approach used in non-convective systems with the Soret effect. The effect of temperature and concentrations perturbations by joint action of vibrational convection and Soret effect on long time scale are carefully examined. The model demonstrates that image processing used for non-convective systems is suitable for the systems with vibration-affected thermodiffusion experiment.

Аннотация: A nonparametric estimate of the decision function in a two-alternative problem of pattern recognition is considered. The principle of expansion of the learning sample and the analysis of the probabilistic characteristics of the obtained sets of random variables are used to synthesize this estimate. On this basis, a technique of construction of confidence boundaries for the Bayesian equation of the separating surface is derived. Аннотация: The development of simple and efficient model that correctly represent the important features of water is essential to overcome the limitations in time scale and system size currently encountered in atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. The proposed one site model includes Lennard-Jones interaction and the angular averaged dipole-dipole interaction. Experimental data of liquid water at various temperatures are used for parametrization of the model. The values of density were chosen as primary target properties. These properties cover a temperature range from 300 to 350 K and pressures up to 10.1 MPa. The model properties are compared with those obtained from experiment and from general purpose TIP4P/2005 model. The comparison shows that all chosen properties are quite well reproduced by the proposed model. Computational scheme that is used in simulations is also presented. The proposed water model repro- duces the key characteristics of liquid water while being computationally considerably more efficient than standard multi-site atomistic water models. The model is for use on large scale simulations of the fluid behavior in nanosized structures. © Siberian Federal University. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Abstract: The paper is devoted to processing the data of DCMIX 1 space experiment. In this experiment, the Optical digital interferometry was used to measure the diffusion and Soret coefficients in the ternary mixture of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene, isobutylbenzene and n-dodecane at mass fractions of 0.8/0.1/0.1 and at 25°C. The raw interferometric images were processed to obtain the temporal and spatial evolution of refractive indices for two laser beams of different wavelengths. The method for extracting the diffusion and thermal diffusion coefficients originally developed for optical beam deflection was extended to optical digital interferometry allowing for the spatial variation of refractive index along the diffusion path. The method was validated and applied to processing the data for Soret and diffusion steps in 5 experimental runs. The obtained results for the Soret coefficients and one of the eigenvalues of diffusion matrix showed acceptable agreement within each step. Рассмотрено предсказание процессов взаимодействия астероидно-кометных тел с атмосферой Земли. Прохождение кометных осколков, а также дробящихся, аморфных, пылевых тел вызывает множество незакрытых вопросов, порождающих экзотические объяснения сопровождающих явлений.

Аннотация: Известно, что качество поверхности металлоизделий механизмов и машин, оцениваемое по величине шероховатости, существенно влияет на их эксплуатационные характеристики. Это касается и рабочих колес (РК) турбонасосных агрегатов (ТНА) жидкостных ракетных двигателей (ЖРД), отливаемых из жаропрочных сплавов, так как этот показатель существенно влияет на объемную подачу компонентов топлива. Однако в связи с трудностями проведения натурного эксперимента на ЖРД в работе были использованы данные, полученные на судовом гребном винте (ГВ), отливаемом из стали, между геометрий которого и функциями РК ТНА имеется определенное сходство. Сходство имеется и в технологиях их изготовления. И те, и другие, во-первых, изготавливают литьем: РК ТНА - способом литья по выплавляемым моделям, ГВ - литьем в песчано-глинистые формы; во-вторых, имеется и сходство в материалах литейных форм: в обоих случаях их основой является песок, а вторым компонентом - жидкое связующее. При этом при литье в песчано-глинистые формы детали зачастую поражаются пригаром - прочно сцепленной с телом отливки коркой, образующейся в результате проникновения жидкого металла в поры между зернами песка формы, которую впоследствии удаляют разными способами, как правило, с ухудшением чистоты поверхности. С целью уменьшения пригара рабочие поверхности форм покрывают огнеупорными красками, представляющими собой суспензии из порошкового наполнителя (графит, пылевидный кварц и др.). Однако применение таких красок не предупреждает образование на отливках пригара из-за крупности частиц наполнителей. В работе использованы противопригарные краски, содержащие нанопорошки тугоплавких химических соединений. При использовании таких покрытий практически полностью предотвращается образование пригара на стальных отливках, включая и описанный в работе судовой гребной винт, и, как результат, повышается чистота и улучшается качество поверхности. Полученные результаты можно использовать при изготовлении форм при литье по выплавляемым моделям РК ТНА.
It is known that the quality of the surface of metal products machinery and equipment measured at the value of the roughness significantly affects their performance. This also applies to the impellers turbopump units (TNA) of liquid rocket engines (LRE), the cast of superalloys, because this figure significantly affects the volumetric flow of the fuel components. However, due to the difficulties of conducting full-scale experiment on LRE, in that article the data from the cast steel ship propellers (SP) were used. There is a certain similarity between geometries of SP and functions of TNA. The similarity of the features and technologies of their production, both of which, firstly, produce a casting: impellers TNA - investment casting process, SP - casting in sand-clay molds, secondly, there is the similarity in the materials of the molds - in both cases, their basis is the sand, and the second component is a liquid binder. At the same time when molding in sand-clay parts often affects the penetration, firmly linked with the body of the casting crust, formed as a result of penetration of liquid metal into the pores between the grains of sand form, which is subsequently removed in a variety of ways, usually with the deterioration of surface cleanliness. To reduce metal penetration work surfaces forms are coated with fireproof paint, representing a suspension of the powder filler (graphite, powdered quartz, etc.). However, the use of such paints does not prevent the formation in castings of metal penetration due to the particle size of the fillers. In this paper a nonstick paint containing nanopowders of refractory chemical compounds is used, the use of such coatings is almost completely prevents the formation of burnt-on steel castings, including the one described in the work of the ship propeller, and, as a result, increased clarity and improved surface quality. The obtained results can be used in the manufacture of molds for the casting of the impellers TNA.
