Effects of MHD shocks propagating along magnetic flux tubes in a dipole magnetic field
[Text] : статья / N.V. Erkaev, V.A. Shaidurov, V.S. Semenov, H.K. Biernat // Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics. - 2002. - Vol. 9. - p. 163-172

Аннотация: Variations of the plasma pressure in a magnetic flux tube can produce MHD waves evolving into shocks. In the case of a low plasma beta, plasma pressure pulses in the magnetic flux tube generate MHD slow shocks propagating along the tube. For converging magnetic field lines, such as in a dipole magnetic field, the cross section of the mag-netic flux tube decreases enormously with increasing mag-netic field strength. In such a case, the propagation of MHD waves along magnetic flux tubes is rather different from that in the case of uniform magnetic fields. In this paper, the propagation of MHD slow shocks is studied numerically us-ing the ideal MHD equations in an approximation suitable for a thin magnetic flux tube with a low plasma beta. The results obtained in the numerical study show that the jumps in the plasma parameters at the MHD slow shock increase greatly while the shock is propagating in the narrowing mag-netic flux tube. The results are applied to the case of the interaction between Jupiter and its satellite Io, the latter be-ing considered as a source of plasma pressure pulses.

Аннотация: The plasma flow past a blunt obstacle in an ideal magnetohydrodynamic ~MHD! model is studied, taking into account the tensorial nature of the plasma pressure. Three different closure relations are explored and compared with one another. The first one is the adiabatic model proposed by Chew, Goldberger, and Low. The second closure is based on the mirror instability criterion, while the third depends on an empirical closure equation obtained from observations of solar wind flow past the Earth's magnetosphere. The latter is related with the criterion of the anisotropic ion cyclotron instability. In the presented model, the total pressure, defined as the sum of magnetic pressure and perpendicular plasma pressure, is assumed to be a known function of Cartesian coordinates. The calculation is based on the Newtonian approximation for the total pressure along the obstacle and on a quadratic behavior with distance from the obstacle along the normal direction. Profiles of magnetic field strength and plasma parameters are presented along the stagnation stream line between the shock and obstacle of an ideal plasma flow with anisotropy in thermal pressure and temperature.

Reduced description in the reaction kinetics

Аннотация: Models of complex reactions in thermodynamically isolated systems often demonstrate evolution towards low-dimensional manifolds in the phase space. For this class of models, we suggest a direct method to construct such manifolds, and thereby to reduce the effective dimension of the problem. The approach realizes the invariance principle of the reduced description, it is based on iterations rather than on a small parameter expansion, it leads to tractable linear problems, and is consistent with thermodynamic requirements. The approach is tested with a model of catalytic reaction.

Аннотация: In this paper, we review the construction of low-dimensional manifolds of reduced description for equations of chemical kinetics from the standpoint of the method of invariant manifold (MIM). MIM is based on a formulation of the condition of invariance as an equation, and its solution by Newton iterations. A review of existing alternative methods is extended by a thermodynamically consistent version of the method of intrinsic low-dimensional manifolds. A grid-based version of MIM is developed, and model extensions of low-dimensional dynamics are described. Generalizations to open systems are suggested. The set of methods covered makes it possible to effectively reduce description in chemical kinetics.

Аннотация: We discuss the temporal variations and frequency distributions of solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field parameters during the solar minimum of 2007-2009 from measurements returned by the IMPACT and PLASTIC instruments on STEREO-A. We find that the density and total field strength were significantly weaker than in the previous minimum. The Alfv,n Mach number was higher than typical. This reflects the weakness of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) forces, and has a direct effect on the solar wind-magnetosphere interactions. We then discuss two major aspects that this weak solar activity had on the magnetosphere, using data from Wind and ground-based observations: i) the dayside contribution to the cross-polar cap potential (CPCP), and ii) the shapes of the magnetopause and bow shock. For i) we find a low interplanetary electric field of 1.3 +/- 0.9 mV m(-1) and a CPCP of 37.3 +/- 20.2 kV. The auroral activity is closely correlated to the prevalent stream-stream interactions. We suggest that the Alfven wave trains in the fast streams and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability were the predominant agents mediating the transfer of solar wind momentum and energy to the magnetosphere during this three-year period. For ii) we determine 328 magnetopause and 271 bow shock crossings made by Geotail, Cluster 1, and the THEMIS B and C spacecraft during a three-month interval when the daily averages of the magnetic and kinetic energy densities attained their lowest value during the three years under survey. We use the same numerical approach as in Fairfield's (J. Geophys. Res. 76, 7600, 1971) empirical model and compare our findings with three magnetopause models. The stand-off distance of the subsolar magnetopause and bow shock were 11.8 R-E and 14.35 R-E, respectively. When comparing with Fairfield's (1971) classic result, we find that the subsolar magnetosheath is thinner by similar to 1 R-E. This is mainly due to the low dynamic pressure which results in a sunward shift of the magnetopause. The magnetopause is more flared than in Fairfield's model. By contrast the bow shock is less flared, and the latter is the result of weaker MHD forces.

Аннотация: A simple and efficient method for solving the extended Graetz problem with specified heat flux in a circular pipe for a multicomponent fluid with Soret and Dufour effects is proposed. With a help of linear transformation of temperature and concentrations, the mass transfer equation and boundary conditions for each component are reduced to the form, which is completely identical to the thermal Graetz problem. The case when only the Soret effect is relevant is studied separately. It is shown that the above-described reduction fails when thermal and solutal Peclet numbers are equal. An alternative method of solution is proposed in this case. Examples of heat and mass transfer in a circular pipe for low Peclet numbers in a model fluid and for high Peclet numbers in the water-alumina nanofluid are considered. The proposed method can be extended to a parallel plate channel as well as annular region between cylindrical pipes with specified heat flux. However, the method cannot be applied to problems, where the temperature is specified on the impermeable pipe wall. В© 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Three following periods were distinguished in the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir in 2000-2009: With low, middle, and high water levels. The largest number of phytoplankton species and infraspecific taxa (193) was found at a middle water level. Cyanophyta gave way to Bacillariophyta, which is indicative of the decrease in the trophic level of the reservoir. In terms of phytoplankton biomass and saprobic index, water quality in the reservoir corresponds to the third class and ?-mesosaprobic zone. В© 2012 Begell House, Inc.

Аннотация: It is well known that lithospheric electromagnetic emissions are generated before earthquakes occurrence. In our study, we consider the physical penetration mechanism of the electric field from the Earth's surface, through the atmosphere-ionosphere layers, and until its detection in space by satellites. A simplified approach is investigated using the electric conductivity equation, i.e., del((sigma) over cap.del Phi) = 0 in the case of a vertical inclination of the geomagnetic field lines. Particular interest is given to the conductivity profile near the ground and the electric field distribution at the Earth's surface. Our results are discussed and compared to the models of Pulinets et al. (2003) and Denisenko et al. (2008). It is shown that the near ground atmospheric layer with low conductivity decreases the electric field penetration into the ionosphere. The model calculations have demonstrated that the electric field of lithospheric origin is too weak to be observed at satellite altitudes.

Аннотация: Acceleration of magnetosheath plasma resulting from the draping of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) around the magnetosphere can give rise to flow speeds that exceed that of the solar wind (V-SW) by up to similar to 60%. Three case event studies out of 34 identified events are described. We then present a statistical study of draping-related accelerations in the magnetosheath. Further, we compare the results with the recent theory of Erkaev et al. (2011, 2012). We present a methodology to help distinguish draping-related accelerations from those caused by magnetic reconnection. To rule out magnetopause reconnection at low latitudes, we focus mainly on the positive B-z phase during the passage of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs), as tabulated in Richardson and Cane (2010) for 1997-2009, and adding other events from 2010. To avoid effects of high-latitude reconnection poleward of the cusp, we also consider spacecraft observations made at low magnetic latitudes. We study the effect of upstream Alfven Mach number (M-A) and magnetic local time (MLT) on the speed ratio V/V-SW. The comparison with theory is good. Namely, (i) flow speed ratios above unity occur behind the dawn-dusk terminator, (ii) those below unity occur on the dayside magnetosheath, and (iii) there is a good general agreement in the dependence of the V ratio on M-A.

Аннотация: The recently discovered low-density super-Earths Kepler-11b, Kepler-11f, Kepler-11d, Kepler-11e, and planets such as GJ 1214b represent the most likely known planets that are surrounded by dense H/He envelopes or contain deep H2O oceans also surrounded by dense hydrogen envelopes. Although these super-Earths are orbiting relatively close to their host stars, they have not lost their captured nebula-based hydrogen-rich or degassed volatile-rich steam protoatmospheres. Thus, it is interesting to estimate the maximum possible amount of atmospheric hydrogen loss from a terrestrial planet orbiting within the habitable zone of late main sequence host stars. For studying the thermosphere structure and escape, we apply a 1-D hydrodynamic upper atmosphere model that solves the equations of mass, momentum, and energy conservation for a planet with the mass and size of Earth and for a super-Earth with a size of 2 R-Earth and a mass of 10 M-Earth. We calculate volume heating rates by the stellar soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet radiation (XUV) and expansion of the upper atmosphere, its temperature, density, and velocity structure and related thermal escape rates during the planet's lifetime. Moreover, we investigate under which conditions both planets enter the blow-off escape regime and may therefore experience loss rates that are close to the energy-limited escape. Finally, we discuss the results in the context of atmospheric evolution and implications for habitability of terrestrial planets in general. Аннотация: We studied the interactions between the stellar wind plasma flow of a typical M star, such as GJ 436, and the hydrogen-rich upper atmosphere of an Earth-like planet and a "super-Earth" with a radius of 2 R Earth and a mass of 10 MEarth, located within the habitable zone at ∼0.24 AU. We investigated the formation of extended atomic hydrogen coronae under the influences of the stellar XUV flux (soft X-rays and EUV), stellar wind density and velocity, shape of a planetary obstacle (e.g., magnetosphere, ionopause), and the loss of planetary pickup ions on the evolution of hydrogen-dominated upper atmospheres. Stellar XUV fluxes that are 1, 10, 50, and 100 times higher compared to that of the present-day Sun were considered, and the formation of high-energy neutral hydrogen clouds around the planets due to the charge-exchange reaction under various stellar conditions was modeled. Charge-exchange between stellar wind protons with planetary hydrogen atoms, and photoionization, lead to the production of initially cold ions of planetary origin. We found that the ion production rates for the studied planets can vary over a wide range, from ∼1.0×1025 s-1 to ∼5.3×1030 s-1, depending on the stellar wind conditions and the assumed XUV exposure of the upper atmosphere. Our findings indicate that most likely the majority of these planetary ions are picked up by the stellar wind and lost from the planet. Finally, we estimated the long-time nonthermal ion pickup escape for the studied planets and compared them with the thermal escape. According to our estimates, nonthermal escape of picked-up ionized hydrogen atoms over a planet's lifetime within the habitable zone of an M dwarf varies between ∼0.4 Earth ocean equivalent amounts of hydrogen (EOH) to <3 EOH and usually is several times smaller in comparison to the thermal atmospheric escape rates. © 2013 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

Аннотация: We investigate the efficiency of the atmospheric mass loss due to hydrodynamic blow-off over the lifetime of the exoplanet HD209458b by studying numerically its hydrogen wind for host star X-ray and EUV (XUV) fluxes between 1 and 100 times that of the present Sun. We apply a time-dependent numerical algorithm which is able to solve the system of hydrodynamic equations straight through the transonic point of the flow including Roche lobe effects. The mass loss rates are calculated as functions of the absorbed energy in the thermosphere. Depending on the heating efficiency for a hydrogen-rich thermosphere the maximum temperature obtained in our study at 1.5R(p1) by neglecting IR cooling is about 5000-10,000 K for heating efficiencies of 10% and 60%, respectively. We find that the upper atmosphere of HD209458b experiences hydrodynamic blow-off even at such low temperatures if one does not neglect gravitational effects caused by the proximity of the planet to its Roche lobe boundary. Depending on the heating efficiency, we find from the solution of the hydrodynamic equations of mass, momentum, and energy balance that energy-limited mass loss rate estimations overestimate the realistic mass loss rate at present time for HD209458b by several times. Using the maximum heating efficiency for hydrogen-rich atmospheres of 60% we find that HD209458b may experience an atmospheric mass loss rate at present time of about 3.5 x 10(10) g s(-1). The mass loss rate evolves to higher values for higher XUV fluxes expected during the early period of the planet's host star evolution, reaching values of several times 10(12) gs(-1). The integrated mass loss is found to be between 1.8% and 4.4% of the present mass of HD209458b. We found that the influence of the stellar tidal forces on atmospheric loss (the Roche lobe effect) is not significant at 0.045 AU. For a similar exoplanet, but at closer orbital distances <= 0.02 AU, the combined effect of the Roche lobe and the high XUV radiation result in much higher thermal loss rates of about 2.6 x 10(11) g s(-1) and even more for early stages. This leads to a total loss over 4 Gyr of 27.5% of the planetary mass. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: In this paper, the solar wind flow around Venus is modeled as a nondissipative fluid which obeys the ideal magnetohydrodynamic equations extended for mass loading processes. The mass loading parameter is calculated for four different cases, corresponding to solar minimum and maximum XUV flux and to nominal and low solar wind velocity. We get smooth profiles of the field and plasma parameters in the magnetosheath. Based on the results of this flow model, we investigate the occurrence of the Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability at the equatorial flanks of the ionopause of Venus. By comparing the instability growth time with the propagation time of the K-H wave, we find that the K-H instability can evolve at the ionopause for all four solar wind conditions. Аннотация: Atmospheric erosion Of CO2-rich Earth-size exoplanets due to coronal mass ejection (CME)-induced ion pick up within close-in habitable zones of active M-type dwarf stars is investigated. Since M stars are active at the X-ray and extreme ultraviolet radiation (XUV) wavelengths over long periods of time, we have applied a thermal balance model at various XUV flux input values for simulating the thermospheric heating by photodissociation and ionization processes due to exothermic chemical reactions and cooling by the CO2 infrared radiation in the 15 mu m band. Our study shows that intense XUV radiation of active M stars results in atmospheric expansion and extended exospheres. Using thermospheric neutral and ion densities calculated for various XUV fluxes, we applied a numerical test particle model for simulation of atmospheric ion pick up loss from an extended exosphere arising from its interaction with expected minimum and maximum CME plasma flows. Our results indicate that the Earth-like exoplanets that have no, or weak, magnetic moments may lose tens to hundreds of bars of atmospheric pressure, or even their whole atmospheres due to the CME-induced O+ ion pick up at orbital distances <= 0.2 astronomical units. We have found that, when exposed to intense XUV fluxes, atmospheres with CO2/N-2 mixing ratios lower than 96% will show an increase in exospheric temperatures and expanded thermosphere-exosphere environments. Hence, they suffer stronger atmospheric erosion, which can result in the total loss of several hundred bars even if an exoplanet is protected by a "magnetic shield" with its boundary located at I Earth radius above the surface. Furthermore, our study indicates that magnetic moments of tidally locked Earth-like exoplanets are essential for protecting their expanded upper atmospheres because of intense XUV radiation against CME plasma erosion. Therefore, we suggest that larger and more massive terrestrial-type exoplanets may better protect their atmospheres against CMEs, because the larger cores of such exoplanets would generate stronger magnetic moments and their higher gravitational acceleration would constrain the expansion of their thermosphere-exosphere regions and reduce atmospheric escape.

Аннотация: The region around a star where a life-supporting biosphere can evolve is the so-called Habitable Zone (HZ). The current definition of the HZ is based only on the mass-luminosity relation of the star and climatological and meteorological considerations of Earth-like planets, but neglects atmospheric loss processes due to the interaction with the stellar radiation and particle environment. From the knowledge of the planets in the Solar System, we know that planets can only evolve into a habitable world if they have a stable orbit around its host star and if they keep the atmosphere and water inventory during: (i) the period of heavy bombardment by asteroids and comets and (ii) during the host stars' active X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and stellar wind periods. Impacts play a minor role for planets with the size and mass like Earth, while high XUV fluxes and strong stellar winds during the active periods of the young host star can destroy the atmospheres and water inventories. We show that XUV produced temperatures in the upper atmospheres of Earth-like planets can lead to hydrodynamic "blow off", resulting in the total loss of the planets water inventory and atmosphere, even if their orbits lie inside the HZ. Further, our study indicates that Earth-like planets inside the HZ of low mass stars may not develop an atmosphere, because at orbital distances closer than 0.3 AU, their atmospheres are highly affected by strong stellar winds and coronal mass ejections (CME's). Our study suggests that planetary magnetospheres will not protect the atmosphere of such planets, because the strong stellar wind of the young star can compress the magnetopause to the atmospheric obstacle. Moreover, planets inside close-in HZ's are tidally locked, therefore, their magnetic moments are weaker than those of an Earth-like planet at 1 AU. Our results indicate that Earth-like planets in orbits of low mass stars may not develop stable biospheres. From this point of view, a HZ, where higher life forms like on Earth may evolve is possibly restricted to higher mass K stars and G stars.

magnetosonic waves -- magnetohydrodynamics -- magnetosphere -- Io-Jupiter interaction

Аннотация: It is well known that in contrast to the Alfven wave, which is propagating strictly along the direction of the magnetic field, a slow mode wave shows a deviation from the ambient magnetic field. This deviation is determined by the dispersion equation for the slow mode wave. With the help of this dispersion equation we present a theoretical study of the spatial and temporal evolution of an initial pressure disturbance in a homogeneous and constant background magnetic field. The main factor determining the amount of the deviation is the so-called plasma beta, i.e., the ratio of magnetic to thermal energy, which is investigated quantitatively. We obtain that for a low beta plasma, the disturbance propagates more or less strictly along the magnetic field. However, for increasing beta the disturbances across the magnetic field gets stronger. These results can be applied to magnetospheric phenomena, where slow shocks may play a role as a kind of energy carrier as in the case of the Io-Jupiter interaction or magnetic field line reconnection. Аннотация: In this paper, we concentrate on the analysis of the anisotropic Rankine-Hugoniot equations for perpendicular and oblique fast shocks. In particular, as additional information to the anisotropic set of equations, the threshold conditions of the fire-hose and mirror instability are used to bound the range of the pressure anisotropy downstream of the discontinuity. These anisotropic threshold conditions of the plasma instabilities are obtained via a kinetic approach using a generalized Lorentzian distribution function, the so-called kappa distribution function. Depending on up-stream conditions, these instabilities further define stable and unstable regions with regard to the pressure anisotropy downstream of the shock. The calculations are done for different upstream Alfven Mach numbers. We found that low values of the parameter kappa reduce the pressure anisotropy downstream of the shock. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd.
