Аннотация: An algorithm for numerical solution of Navier-Stokes equations for two-dimensional motion of a viscous heat-conducting gas is proposed in the paper. The discretization of the equations is performed by a combination of the method of trajectories for the substantive derivative and the finite element method with piecewise-bilinear basis functions for other summands. Results of numerical study of the supersonic flow structure are presented for a flat channel in its step expansion zone for a wide range of Mach and Reynolds numbers. Velocity and pressure fields are investigated, the vortex structure of the circulation flow is studied in the domain after the step.

    On shunkov's groups with involutions

Аннотация: Infinite Shunkov's groups are studied under the condition that a normalizer of any finite non-unit subgroup has an almost layer-finite periodic part. It has been proved that Shunkov's group satisfies this condition with strongly embedded subgroup possessing non-Chernikov's almost layer-finite periodic part has an almost layer-finite periodic part.

Аннотация: We consider the Galerkin piecewise linear finite element method for an ordinary convection-diffusion boundary value problem with a small parameter in front of the highest derivative. For the generation of a discrete linear algebraic system we use the special quadrature formulae that take into account the boundary layer character of the solution. It is proved that the resulting discrete problem is of epsilon(2) + h(2)-order of accuracy in the uniform discrete norm for small h and epsilon. The numerical example shows the advantage of the considered discrete scheme over two commonly used difference schemes.

Аннотация: A large number and wide variety of lake ecosystem models have been developed and published during the past four decades. We identify two challenges for making further progress in this field. One such challenge is to avoid developing more models largely following the concept of others ('reinventing the wheel'). The other challenge is to avoid focusing on only one type of model, while ignoring new and diverse approaches that have become available ('having tunnel vision'). In this paper, we aim at improving the awareness of existing models and knowledge of concurrent approaches in lake ecosystem modelling, without covering all possible model tools and avenues. First, we present a broad variety of modelling approaches. To illustrate these approaches, we give brief descriptions of rather arbitrarily selected sets of specific models. We deal with static models (steady state and regression models), complex dynamic models (CAEDYM, CE-QUAL-W2, Delft 3D-ECO, LakeMab, LakeWeb, MyLake, PCLake, PROTECH, SALMO), structurally dynamic models and minimal dynamic models. We also discuss a group of approaches that could all be classified as individual based: super-individual models (Piscator, Charisma), physiologically structured models, stage-structured models and traitbased models. We briefly mention genetic algorithms, neural networks, Kalman filters and fuzzy logic. Thereafter, we zoom in, as an in-depth example, on the multi-decadal development and application of the lake ecosystem model PCLake and related models (PCLake Metamodel, Lake Shira Model, IPH-TRIM3D-PCLake). In the discussion, we argue that while the historical development of each approach and model is understandable given its 'leading principle', there are many opportunities for combining approaches. We take the point of view that a single 'right' approach does not exist and should not be strived for. Instead, multiple modelling approaches, applied concurrently to a given problem, can help develop an integrative view on the functioning of lake ecosystems. We end with a set of specific recommendations that may be of help in the further development of lake ecosystem models.

Аннотация: A system of equations of geophysical hydrothermodynamics of the ocean in the Boussinesq, hydrostatic, and 'rigid lid' approximations is used for description of stratified flows in landlocked reservoirs. A numerical algorithm is considered for flows two-dimensional in the vertical plane. This algorithm is based on the method of splitting with respect to physical processes, the finite element method, and the upstream difference scheme. The numerical algorithm has been checked on test problems. The model was used for determination of wind circulation and vertical distributions of temperature and salinity in the Shira Lake. The results of numerical modelling are in good agreement with actual data.

Аннотация: By means of numerical modelling of the combined effect of laser (1.06 mu m) and microwave (10(10)-10(13) s(-1)) radiation on the aluminium surface in vacuum it is shown that the additional action of microwave radiation with the frequency 10(12) s(-1) provides complete ionisation of the metal vapour (for the values of laser radiation duration and intensity used in the calculations), while in the absence of microwave radiation the vapour remains weakly ionised. The mathematical model used accounts for the processes, occurring in the condensed phase (heat conduction, melting), the evaporation and the kinetic processes in the resulting vapour.

Аннотация: This paper is devoted to the application of the modified two stream or cross current instability (MTST) to the interaction of the solar wind and Venus. Two scenarios are presented providing favorable conditions for the excitation of the instability. For the first scenario, the free energy source of the MTSI is a significant gradient drift of the solar wind protons near the subsolar ionopause. The corresponding growth rates and frequencies of the MTSI are calculated within a full electromagnetic approach for a two-component plasma. The driving source of the second considered scenario consists in the relative drift velocity between solar wind and planetary particles. For modelling this situation, the dispersion equation for a four-component plasma is solved numerically. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: We study the solar wind flow in the Earth's magnetosheath using a three-dimensional, ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model with anisotropic plasma pressure. Four different closure relations are examined and compared with each other, i) The double adiabatic model; ii) the empirical relation with respect to the criterion of the anisotropic ion cyclotron instability; iii) the mirror instability criterion, and (iv) the combination of the mirror and the anisotropic ion cyclotron instability. Profiles of magnetic field strength and plasma parameters for the different closure relations are presented and compared with each other along the stagnation stream line between the shock and the obstacle. We find that the main body of the magnetosheath is mirror unstable. This is a reason to combine both, mirror and ion cyclotron instability criteria to close the ideal MHD model. (C) 2001 COSPAR. Аннотация: We discuss results on the solar wind flow past the non-axisymmetric magnetospheres of planets Jupiter and Saturn obtained by integrating numerically the dissipationless MHD equations under simplifying assumptions. We model these equatorially broadened magnetospheres as paraboloids with two different radii of curvature at the subsolar point. The thickness of the magnetosheath and the width and structure of the plasma depletion layer are found to be strong functions of the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). The effect of the IMF on the magnetosheath is strongest (weakest) when the IMF is directed perpendicular (parallel) to the rotational equator. For any intermediate IMF orientation, a smooth rotation of the magnetosheath magnetic field towards the direction of the planet's rotational axis is superimposed on the field strength enhancement (and the density reduction) as the respective magnetopauses are approached. These effects are more pronounced at Jupiter than at Saturn. (C) 1997 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Аннотация: The model of convection in a multicomponent fluid is considered taking into account the cross-diffusion and the Soret effect. It is shown that the cross-diffusion coefficients can be eliminated by a linear change of composition and the thermal diffusion coefficients. It allows a simple incorporation of cross-diffusion phenomena into the results obtained for the case of diagonal diffusion matrix. Applications to the modelling of multicomponent flows in microgravity and terrestrial conditions are discussed. В© 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Аннотация: In this paper, a full multigrid algorithm with a symmetric V-cycle for a grid problem obtained by discretization of a second-order elliptic equation with quadratic finite elements on triangles is studied. The multigrid complexity of the algorithm is proved. This means that the number of arithmetic operations required to achieve the order of accuracy of an approximate solution equal to that of the discretization error linearly depends on the number of unknowns. The rate of convergence is found to be higher than that for linear finite elements in spite of the higher order of accuracy.

    Efficient simulations of detailed combustion fields via the lattice Boltzmann method

Аннотация: Purpose – The paper aims to be a first step toward the efficient, yet accurate, solution of detailed combustion fields using the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, where applications are still limited due to both the stiffness of the governing equations and the large amount of fields to solve. Design/methodology/approach – The suggested methodology for model reduction is developed in the setting of slow invariant manifold construction, including details of the while. The simplest LB equation is used in order to work out the procedure of coupling of the reduced model with the flow solver. Findings – The proposed method is validated with the 2D simulation of a premixed laminar flame in the hydrogen-air mixture, where a remarkable computational speedup and memory saving are demonstrated. Research limitations/implications – Because of the chosen detailed LB model, the flow field may be described with unsatisfactory accuracy: this motivates further investigation in this direction in the near future. Practical implications – A new framework of simulation of reactive flows is available, based on a coupling between accurate reduced reaction mechanism and the LB representation of the flow phenomena. Hence, the paper includes implications on how to perform accurate reactive flow simulations at a fraction of the cost required in the detailed model. Originality/value – This paper meets an increasing need to have efficient and accurate numerical tools for modelling complex phenomena, such as pollutant formation during combustion.
