Rate of steady-state reconnection in an incompressible plasma
[Text] : статья / N.V. Erkaev, V.S. Semenov, H.K. Alexeev, H.K. Biernat // Physics of Plasmas. - 2001. - Vol. 8, № 11. - p. 4800-4811DOI 10.1063/1.1410112 . -

Аннотация: The reconnection rate is obtained for the simplest case of two-dimensional (2D) symmetric reconnection in an incompressible plasma. In the short note [Erkaev et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 1455 (2000)], the reconnection rate is found by matching the outer Petschek solution and the inner diffusion region solution. Here the details of the numerical simulation of the diffusion region are presented and the asymptotic procedure which is used for deriving the reconnection rate is described. The reconnection rate is obtained as a decreasing function of the diffusion region length. For a sufficiently large diffusion region scale, the reconnection rate becomes close to that obtained in the Sweet-Parker solution with the inverse square root dependence on the magnetic Reynolds number Re m , determined for the global size of the current sheet. On the other hand, for a small diffusion region length scale, the reconnection rate turns out to be very similar to that obtained in the Petschek model with a logarithmic dependence on the magnetic Reynolds number Re m . This means that the Petschek regime seems to be possible only in the case of a strongly localized conductivity corresponding to a small scale of the diffusion region. c 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Аннотация: The plasma flow past a blunt obstacle in an ideal magnetohydrodynamic ~MHD! model is studied, taking into account the tensorial nature of the plasma pressure. Three different closure relations are explored and compared with one another. The first one is the adiabatic model proposed by Chew, Goldberger, and Low. The second closure is based on the mirror instability criterion, while the third depends on an empirical closure equation obtained from observations of solar wind flow past the Earth's magnetosphere. The latter is related with the criterion of the anisotropic ion cyclotron instability. In the presented model, the total pressure, defined as the sum of magnetic pressure and perpendicular plasma pressure, is assumed to be a known function of Cartesian coordinates. The calculation is based on the Newtonian approximation for the total pressure along the obstacle and on a quadratic behavior with distance from the obstacle along the normal direction. Profiles of magnetic field strength and plasma parameters are presented along the stagnation stream line between the shock and obstacle of an ideal plasma flow with anisotropy in thermal pressure and temperature.

Аннотация: Magnetic filament approach is applied for modeling of nonlinear "kink"-like flapping oscillations of thin magnetic flux tubes in the Earth's magnetotail current sheet. A discrete approximation for the magnetic flux tube was derived on a basis of the Hamiltonian formulation of the problem. The obtained system of ordinary differential equations was integrated by method of Rosenbrock, which is suitable for stiff equations. The two-dimensional exact Kan's solution of the Vlasov equations was used to set the background equilibrium conditions for magnetic field and plasma. Boundary conditions for the magnetic filament were found to be dependent on the ratio of the ionospheric conductivity and the Alfven conductivity of the magnetic tube. It was shown that an enhancement of this ratio leads to the corresponding increase of the frequency of the flapping oscillations. For some special case of boundary conditions, when the magnetic perturbations vanish at the boundaries, the calculated frequency of the "kink"-like flapping oscillations is rather close to that predicted by the "double gradient" analytical model. For others cases, the obtained frequency of the flapping oscillations is somewhat larger than that from the "double gradient" theory. The frequency of the nonlinear flapping oscillations was found to be a decreasing function of the amplitude. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4725506]

Аннотация: Imprisonment of resonant radiation in an expanding sphere on the basis of the numerical solution of the rate balance equation for excited atoms and the transfer resonance radiation equation is investigated. Calculations of the escape factor for sphere at Doppler form of absorption and scattering profiles are executed. The effect of spectral shift of the absorption (emission) profile relative to the stationary one due to expansion of the medium is taken into account for the case when differential motion is described by velocity that varies linearly with the radius. The behaviour of the escape factor for the sphere is compared with the Sobolev theory. The numerical date for time dependence of intensity of afterglow and contour of the spectral line of leaving outside resonance radiation and spatial distribution of the excited atomic concentration are submitted as well.

Аннотация: A new model of the electron pressure anisotropy in the electron diffusion region in collisionless magnetic reconnection is presented for the case of antiparallel configuration of magnetic fields. The plasma anisotropy is investigated as source of collisionless dissipation. By separating electrons in the vicinity of the neutral line into two broad classes of inflowing and accelerating populations, it is possible to derive a simple closure for the off-diagonal electron pressure component. The appearance of these two electron populations near the neutral line is responsible for the anisotropy and collisionless dissipation in the magnetic reconnection. Particle-in-cell simulations verify the proposed model, confirming first the presence of two particle populations and second the analytical results for the off-diagonal electron pressure component. Furthermore, test-particle calculations are performed to compare our approach with the model of electron pressure anisotropy in the inner electron diffusion region by Fujimoto and Sydora [Phys. Plasmas 16, 112309 (2009)]. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3521576]

Аннотация: This study presents a theoretical approach to analyze the influence of kappa distributed streaming ions and magnetized electrons on the plasma wave propagation in the presence of dust by employing two-potential theory. In particular, analytical expressions under certain conditions are derived for various modes of propagation comprising of kinetic Alfven wave streaming instability, two stream instability, and dust acoustic and whistler waves. A dispersion relation for kinetic Alfven-like streaming instability has been derived. The effects of dust particles and Lorentzian index on the growth rates and the threshold streaming velocity for the excitation of the instability are examined. The streaming velocity is observed to be destabilizing for slow motion and stabilizing for fast streaming motions. It is also observed that the presence of magnetic field and superthermal particles hinders the growth rate of instability. Possible applications to various space and astrophysical situations are discussed. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3491336]

Аннотация: Results of two-dimensional nonlinear numerical simulations of the magnetohydrodynamic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability are presented. A boundary layer of a certain width is assumed, which separates the plasma in the upper layer from the plasma in the lower layer. A special focus is given on the influence of a density increase toward the lower layer. The evolution of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability can be divided into three different phases, namely, a linear growth phase at the beginning, followed by a nonlinear phase with regular structures of the vortices, and finally, a turbulent phase with nonregular structures. The spatial scales of the vortices are about five times the initial width of the boundary layer. The considered configuration is similar to the situation around unmagnetized planets, where the solar wind (upper plasma layer) streams past the ionosphere (lower plasma layer), and thus the plasma density increases toward the planet. The evolving vortices might detach around the terminator of the planet and eventually so-called plasma clouds might be formed, through which ionospheric material can be lost. For the special case of a Venus-like planet, loss rates are estimated, which are of the order of estimated loss rates from observations at Venus. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. Аннотация: Hall magnetohydrodynamic model is investigated for current sheet flapping oscillations, which implies a gradient of the normal magnetic field component. For the initial undisturbed current sheet structure, the normal magnetic field component is assumed to have a weak linear variation. The profile of the electric current velocity is described by hyperbolic functions with a maximum at the center of the current sheet. In the framework of this model, eigenfrequencies are calculated as functions of the wave number for the "kink" and "sausage" flapping wave modes. Because of the Hall effects, the flapping eigenfrequency is larger for the waves propagating along the electric current, and it is smaller for the opposite wave propagation with respect to the current. The asymmetry of the flapping wave propagation, caused by Hall effects, is pronounced stronger for thinner current sheets. This is due to the Doppler effect related to the electric current velocity. Аннотация: In this paper, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is studied by solving the ideal MHD equations for a compressible plasma. A transition layer of finite thickness between two plasmas, across which the magnitude of the velocity and the density change, is assumed. Growth rates are presented for the transverse case, i.e., the flow velocity is perpendicular to the magnetic field. If only the velocity changes across the boundary layer and the density is kept constant, an important quantity affecting the growth of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is the magnetosonic Mach number, which characterizes compressibility. The growth rates for the case when both, the velocity and the density, change are very sensitive to the ratio of the upper plasma density to the lower plasma density: a decrease of the density ratio yields a decrease of the growth rate. Including a density profile is very important for the application of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability to the solar wind flow around unmagnetized planets, e.g., Venus, where the plasma density increases from the magnetosheath to the ionosphere. Аннотация: This paper is the first approach for analyzing the influence of kappa-distributed particles on the modified two-stream instability (MTSI). It is assumed that the plasma consists of a magnetized Maxwellian electron contribution and unmagnetized kappa-distributed ions drifting across the electrons. Within an electrostatic approximation, the influence of the kappa parameter on the maximum growth rate of the MTSI is evaluated for the special case of parallel drift velocity and wave propagation.

Roche lobe effects on expanded upper atmospheres of short-periodic giant exoplanets

Аннотация: Theoretical studies and recent observational evidence of the expansion of the atmospheres of short-periodic exoplanets show that the atmospheres extend up to several planetary radii. This indicates that the atmospheres experience blow-off conditions. Because of the short orbital distance to their host stars, the expansion of the upper atmosphere is no longer radially symmetric, but depends on the direction to the central body, resulting in a deformation of the expanded atmosphere. We show the connection between atmospheric expansion, tidal forces and effects of the Roche potential and find that HD209458 b, OGLE-TR-10 b and OGLE-TR-111 b are most likely in a state of classical hydrodynamical blow-off because the distance where blow-off can occur is less than the distance to the Lagrangian point L1. On the other hand, OGLE-TR-56 b, OGLE-TR-113 b, OGLE-TR-132 b and TreS-1 experience a geometrical blow-off defined by the Roche lobe as proposed by Lecavelier des Etangs et al. (2004, A&A, 418, L1). Our results have important implications for the evolution of short periodic gas giants, because the Roche lobe overflow of the atmosphere can lead to lower mass loss rates over the exoplanets history, compared to gas giants which experience hydrodynamic expansion and loss unaffected by this boundary. Thus, massive exoplanets like OGLE-TR-56 b in very close orbital distances are subject to geometrical blow-off conditions, this results in a total mass loss for this particular exoplanet of the order of about 3 x 10(-2) M-pl over the planets age, even if current mass loss rates of about 2 x 10(11) g s(-1) are calculated. If the exoplanet effected by the geometrical blow-off is more massive, the mass loss rate is even lower. However, giant exoplanets like HD209458 b, OGLE-TR-10 b and OGLE-TR-111 b at orbital distances of about 0.05 AU may experience classical hydrodynamic blow-off conditions, which can result in higher mass loss rates. Thus, such planets may shrink to their core sizes during the X-ray and EUV active periods of their host stars as proposed by Lammer et al. ( 2003, ApJ, L121, 598) and Bara. e et al. (2004, A& A, 419, L13).

Аннотация: During the past years, more than 130 giant planets were discovered in extrasolar planetary systems. Because of the fact that the orbital distances are very close to their host stars, these planets are embedded in a dense stellar wind, which can pick up planetary ions. We model the stellar wind interaction of the short-periodic exoplanets OGLE-TR-56b and HD 209458b at their orbital distances of approximate to 0.023 AU and approximate to 0.045 AU, by calculating the Alfven Mach number and the magnetosonic Mach number in the stellar wind plasma flow. We then analyze the different plasma interaction regimes around the planetary obstacles, which appear for different stellar wind parameters. Our study shows that the stellar wind plasma parameters like temperature, interplanetary magnetic field, particle density, and velocity near planetary obstacles at orbital distances closer than 0.1-0.2 AU have conditions such that no bow shocks evolve. Our study shows also that these close-in exoplanets are in a submagnetosonic regime comparable to the magnetospheric plasma interaction of the inner satellites of Jupiter and Saturn. Furthermore, we compare the results achieved for both exoplanets with the Jupiter-class exoplanet HD 28185b at its orbital distance of approximate to 1.03 AU. Finally, we also discuss the behavior of the stellar wind plasma flow close to the planetary obstacles of two highly eccentric gas giants, namely, HD 108147b and HD 162020b. Because of their eccentric orbits, these two exoplanets periodically experience both regimes with and without a bow shock. Finally, we simulate the neutral gas density of HD 209458b with a Monte Carlo model. By using the plasma parameters obtained in our study we calculate the ion production and loss rate of H+ with a test particle model. Our simulations yield H+ loss rates for HD 209458b or similar giant exoplanets in orders of about 10(8)-10(9) g s(-1). These ion loss rates are at least 1 order of magnitude lower than the observed loss rate of evaporating neutral H atoms. Our study indicates, that similar gas giants at larger orbital distances have lower ion loss rates. Thus, the dominating component of particle loss of short-periodic Jupiter-class exoplanets will be neutral hydrogen.

Аннотация: Within the framework of the assumption of large azimuthal wave numbers, the equations for Alfven and slow magnetosonic waves are obtained using frozen-in material coordinates. These equations are specified for the case of a nonuniform magnetic field with axial symmetry. Assuming a meridional polarization of the magnetic field and velocity perturbations, the effects of Alfven wave propagation are analyzed which are related to geometric characteristics of a nonuniform magnetic field: (a) A finite curvature radius of the magnetic field lines and (b) convergence of magnetic field lines. The interaction between the Alfven and magnetosonic waves is found to be strongly dependent on the curvature radius of the magnetic tube and the local plasma beta parameter. The electric field amplitude and the length scale of a wave front are found to increase very strongly in the course of the Alfven wave propagation along a converging magnetic flux tube. Also studied is a temporal decrease of the wave perturbations which is caused by dissipation at the conducting boundary. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Аннотация: This article deals with the magnetohydrodynamic instability of a thin layer which is characterized by a high magnetic shear, a constant curvature radius, and a plasma velocity shear. The magnetic field and the plasma parameters are considered to be piecewise constant inside the layer and in the regions adjacent to the layer. The plasma parameters and the magnetic field are assumed to obey the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. Fourier analysis is used to calculate small perturbations of the magnetic field and plasma parameters near the layer in linear approximation. The instability growth rate is obtained as a function of different parameters: the magnetic shear angle, the velocity direction angle, the tangential plasma velocity, the layer thickness, the wave number, and the curvature radius. The resulting instability is a mixture of interchange and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities on a surface with nonzero curvature. For a fixed velocity shear and curvature radius, the instability growth has a maximum in the case of antiparallel magnetic fields (maximal magnetic shear). This growth rate is an increasing function of the tangential velocity component perpendicular to the magnetic field, and a decreasing function of the velocity component along the magnetic field. The instability is stronger for smaller curvature radius. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

[Text] : статья / N. Rubab [et al.] // Proceedings of the 7th International Workshop on Planetary, Solar and Heliospheric Radio Emissions. - 2011. - p. 559-569

Аннотация: Dust kinetic Alfven waves (DKAW) instability with Kappa-distributed ions streaming effects have been examined rigorously in a uniform dusty magnetoplasma. A dispersion relation of low-frequency DKAW instability on the dust acoustic velocity branch is obtained in a low-beta Lorentzian plasma. It is found that nonthermality is more effective for dust kinetic Alfven waves in the perpendicular component having finite larmor radius effects. Lorentzian type charging currents are obtained with the aid of Vlasov theory. Effect of different dust parameters on the growth rates of instability are considered. Damping/instability due to dust charge fluctuation is found to be insensitive to the form of the distribution function for DKAW. Possible applications to dusty space plasmas are pointed out.

ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES - Propagation -- GASES - Ionization -- PLASMAS

Аннотация: The propagation of the resonance electromagnetic wave accompanied by gas ionization is considered. Plasma is formed through initial associative processes followed by the action of electrons which gain energy when colliding with the excited atoms. The change in the nature of the radiation propagation results from both a decrease in the ground state atom density and an increase in the probability of the upper state atom de-excitation. Concrete estimates are made for cesium. The degree of gas ionization and the wave propagation velocity of transparency are calculated. В© 1981.

Invariance principle for extension of hydrodynamics: Nonlinear viscosity
/ I. V. Karlin, G. Dukek, T. F. Nonnenmacher // Physical Review E - Statistical Physics, Plasmas, Fluids, and Related Interdisciplinary Topics. - 1997. - Vol. 55, Is. 2. - P1573-1576 . - ISSN 1063-651X

Аннотация: Invariance of nonhydrodynamic variables is put forward as a working principle of extending hydrodynamics into a highly nonequilibrium domain. Following this principle, the leading modification of the viscosity due to the gradient of the average velocity is derived explicitly from nonlinear moment Grad equations [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 2, 331 (1949)].
