Аннотация: A mathematical model of the far turbulent wake behind a towed body in a passively stratified medium, based on the known semi-empirical e-E > model of turbulence, is considered. A grouptheoretical analysis of the model is performed. With the help of the method of B-determining equations, the model is reduced to a system of ordinary differential equations, which is solved numerically. The resultant solution is compared with a self-similar solution obtained by direct numerical integration of the differential equations at large distances from the body.

Аннотация: A one-dimensional numerical model and a two-dimensional numerical model of the hydrodynamic and thermal structure of Lake Shira during summer have been developed, with several original physical and numerical features. These models are well suited to simulate the formation and dynamics of vertical stratification and provide a basis for an ecological water-quality model of the lake. They allow for the quantification of the vertical mixing processes that govern not only the thermal structure but also the nutrient exchange, and more generally, the exchange of dissolved and particulate matter between different parts of the lake. The outcome of the calculations has been compared with the field data on vertical temperature and salinity distributions in Lake Shira. Lake Shira is meromictic and exhibits very stable annual stratification. The stratification is so stable because of the high salinity of the water. If the water in Lake Shira were fresh and other parameters (depth, volume, and meteorology) were the same, as now, the lake would be mixed in autumn. Using the newly developed models and using common meteorological parameters, we conclude that Lake Shira will remain stratified in autumn as long as the average salinity is higher than 3%.

Аннотация: We report on a numerical study of the mixing of two miscible fluids in gravitationally stable configuration. In the absence of external forces the diffusion process leads to the mixing of species. The aim of this study is to analyze the physical mechanism by which vibrations affect the mixing characteristic of two stratified miscible fluids. The translational periodic vibrations of a rigid cell filled with different mixtures of water-isopropanol are imposed. The vibrations with a constant frequency and amplitude are directed along the interface. In absence of gravity vibration-induced mass transport is incomparably faster than in diffusion regime. Our results highlight the strong interplay between gravity and vibrational impact, the relative weight of each effect is determined by ratio vibrational and classical Rayleigh numbers. Аннотация: A system of equations of geophysical hydrothermodynamics of the ocean in the Boussinesq, hydrostatic, and 'rigid lid' approximations is used for description of stratified flows in landlocked reservoirs. A numerical algorithm is considered for flows two-dimensional in the vertical plane. This algorithm is based on the method of splitting with respect to physical processes, the finite element method, and the upstream difference scheme. The numerical algorithm has been checked on test problems. The model was used for determination of wind circulation and vertical distributions of temperature and salinity in the Shira Lake. The results of numerical modelling are in good agreement with actual data.

    Mixing Under Vibrations in Reduced Gravity

Аннотация: The aim of this study is to analyze the physical mechanism by which vibrations affect the mixing characteristic of two initially stratified miscible fluids. The translational periodic vibrations of a rigid cell filled with different mixtures (Sc = 7125) are considered. The vibrations with a constant frequency are imposed parallel to the initially planar interface. The ability of the applied vibrations to enhance the flow is examined. At the early stage after imposing the vibrations the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is observed in absence and at low level of gravity. Later in time the system undergoes a transition to Rayleigh-Taylor instability. With increasing of gravity level the life-time of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is decreased. We found the critical value of Gr above which this instability do not developed.

Аннотация: The work deals with the numerical study of hydrothermal processes in well-drained basins of large extent. We consider approximate mathematical models for studying slow flows of a stratified fluid and estimating the flow pattern in the region adjacent to the water intake. We describe the methods of determining the heat exchange through the free surface of the basin and wind stress. We give examples of calculations of the schematic reservoirs of the Krasnoyarsk, Turukhansk, and Boguchansk Hydros.

Аннотация: The erection of large hydroelectric power stations leads to appreciable changes in hydrothermal and ice river regimes both above and below the hydroscheme. The river regime change affects the adjacent areas ecology. To estimate completely the ecologic effect of designed and already constructed hydroelectric power stations, it is necessary to determine the hydrothermal and ice river regime changes. As a methodical basis for the construction of a set of computer algorithms, a method of splitting by physical processes and the module principle has been used. Among the hydro-ice-thermics problems of rivers and water reservoirs are the following: the determination of the temperature regime of a water reservoir, an investigation of stratified flows in a weakly-running water reservoir; an investigation of a hydrothermal river regime; an investigation of ice cover edge dynamics in the downstream of a river. For every problem, mathematical models of different levels of complication and computer programs have been worked out.

Аннотация: A mathematical model describing motion of an inhomogeneous incompressible fluid in a Hele-Shaw cell is considered. Linear stability analysis of shear flow class is provided. Hierarchy of simplified one-dimensional models of viscosity- and density stratified flows is obtained in long wave approximation. Аннотация: To understand the mechanisms of formation of water quality it is necessary to study both biological and chemical properties of a lake as well as its hydro regime. For many years researchers have focused on the study of chemistry and biology of Lake Shira (situated in Siberia), but a detailed investigation of its hydro regime has become possible only recently with the development of modern measuring instruments. Using the latest generation of measuring devices we have obtained the hydrophysical characteristics of the stratified salt lake in situ (air and water temperature, wind strength and direction, water velocity). Relationships between the measured data have allowed us to analyze the flow in the lake as a whole, thus outlining the problem of determining lake ecological status in the period under observation. © SGEM2014.

    Baroclinic seiches for three-layer density stratification in the basin of rectangular shape

Аннотация: The problem of linear baroclinic seiches in rectangular basin is considered. It is supposed that density is stratified into three layers. Internal waves are not taken into account. It is shown that one-dimensional model allows one to determine the positions of thermocline and halocline. The model also allows one to determine the values of temperature and salinity in the surface and bottom layers with satisfactory accuracy. Fluctuations of temperature and salinity in pycnocline are estimated by calculating parameters of baroclinic seiches. The results of calculations and measurements in Lake Shira are compared. © Siberian Federal University. All rights reserved.

This leads to the formation of upper and depth layers with small density gradients, between which there is a water layer with a large density gradient. Аннотация: A three-dimensional semi-empirical model of turbulence in the approximation of a far wake behind an axisymmetric self-propelled body is considered. The required quantities are the kinetic energy of the turbulence, the rate of dissipation of the kinetic energy of the turbulence, the mean density defect and the density fluctuation dispersion. A group-theoretic analysis is performed on the system of ordinary differential equations which is solved numerically. The solutions constructed are in good agreement with experimental data. Аннотация: Salt stratified Lake Shira is the subject of extensive research because of its central role in the Khakassia (Russia) resort area. Hydro regime influences both biological and chemical properties of a lake. Generally mathematical modelling of Lake Shira hydrophysics was based on assumption of a uniform horizontal initial distribution of salinity. It was believed that freshening had little effect on the lake hydrophysics because of the small Son River tributary. This work is an attempt to determine the effect of freshened lake area on the lake hydrophysics and its ecological condition. 3D mathematical modelling based on modern computer packages is used to study in detail the influence of non-uniform salinity due to the influx of the Son River on the flow structure in Lake Shira. Numerical simulation has shown that even a relatively small area of fresh water in shallow part of this lake has a significant impact on the wind currents in the lake if they are accompanied by internal waves

Аннотация: Исследованы ветровые течения в соленых меромиктических озерах, в которых в течение как минимум одного года толща воды не перемешивается до дна. При этом формируются верхний и глубинный слои, в которых градиенты плотности малы, между ними располагается слой воды с большим градиентом плотности. Показано, что в зависимости от плотностной стратификации и скорости ветра возможны ветровые течения (в вертикальной плоскости) двух типов: с одной или двумя циркуляционными зонами. Для двухслойной модели озера предложен критерий смены режимов ветровых течений.

Аннотация: The in-situ data on the vertical structure and stability of the vertical stratification of saline Lake Shira over the past decade (2007–2015) are analyzed. Simplified mathematical models have shown that strong wind in the autumn of 2014 together with rather thick ice in the winter of 2015 caused a change in the circulation regime of this water reservoir from meromictic (incomplete mixing) to holomictic (compete mixing). Based on the results obtained, a circulation regime for deep saline lakes located in the continental climate zone, in particular, in the arid zones of Southern Siberia (Khakassia, Transbaikal, and Altai) can be predicted under various climate scenarios of the future. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
