Аннотация: A model of vibrational convection of a binary mixture with the thermodiffusion effect is considered. The symmetries of model equations are found, depending on the values of physical parameters. A partially invariant solution, which describes separation of the binary mixture in a thermodiffusion column, is constructed and studied. The influence of streamwise vibrations on the flow regime and separation of the mixture is investigated.

Аннотация: Рассматривается термокапиллярная конвекция в бесконечном жидком цилиндре, окруженном коасксиальным слоем газа с контролируемым расходом. В слоях задан постоянный осевой градиент температуры. Найдено точное решение уравнений движения, описывающее стационарное течение в данной двухфазной системе. Исследована устойчивость этого решения относительно малых возмущений. проведено сравнение результатов для случаев деформируемой и недеформируемой границы раздела между жидкостью и газом.

Аннотация: A simple and efficient method for solving the extended Graetz problem with specified heat flux in a circular pipe for a multicomponent fluid with Soret and Dufour effects is proposed. With a help of linear transformation of temperature and concentrations, the mass transfer equation and boundary conditions for each component are reduced to the form, which is completely identical to the thermal Graetz problem. The case when only the Soret effect is relevant is studied separately. It is shown that the above-described reduction fails when thermal and solutal Peclet numbers are equal. An alternative method of solution is proposed in this case. Examples of heat and mass transfer in a circular pipe for low Peclet numbers in a model fluid and for high Peclet numbers in the water-alumina nanofluid are considered. The proposed method can be extended to a parallel plate channel as well as annular region between cylindrical pipes with specified heat flux. However, the method cannot be applied to problems, where the temperature is specified on the impermeable pipe wall. В© 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: The differential equations describing convection in binary mixture with Soret and Dufour effects are considered. The symmetry classification of these equations with respect to the constant parameters is made. It is shown that a generator producing equivalence transformations of constants is defined accurately up to a factor arbitrarily depending on these constants. The equivalence group admitted by the governing equations is calculated. Using this group, a transformation connecting the systems with and without Soret and Dufour terms is derived. In pure Soret case, it reduces to a linear change of temperature and concentration. The presence of Dufour effect requires an additional change of thermal diffusivity and diffusion coefficient. A scheme for reducing an initial and boundary value problem for Soret–Dufour equations to a problem for the system without these effects is proposed.

Аннотация: The model of convection in a multicomponent fluid is considered taking into account the cross-diffusion and the Soret effect. It is shown that the cross-diffusion coefficients can be eliminated by a linear change of composition and the thermal diffusion coefficients. It allows a simple incorporation of cross-diffusion phenomena into the results obtained for the case of diagonal diffusion matrix. Applications to the modelling of multicomponent flows in microgravity and terrestrial conditions are discussed. В© 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Аннотация: We report experimental evidence of convection caused by translational vibration of nonuniformly heated fluid in low gravity. The theory of vibrational convection in weightlessness is well developed but direct experimental proof has been missing. An innovative point of the experiment is the observation of a temperature field in the front and side views of the cubic cell. In addition, particle tracing is employed. The evolution of this field is studied systematically in a wide range of frequencies and amplitudes. The flow structures reported in previous numerical studies are confirmed. The transition from four-vortex flow to the pattern with three vortices is observed in the transient state.

    Thermovibrational Convection in Microgravity: Preparation of a Parabolic Flight Experiment

Аннотация: This work describes the preparation of the future experiments on thermovibrational convection in microgravity during parabolic flights. The experimental setup for observing thermovibrational flows is designed. It consists of a cubic cell with liquid, which is subjected to controlled vibration, and equipment for registering velocity and temperature fields with a help of optical digital interferometry. The question of choosing working liquid and control parameters of the experiment is addressed. A 3D numerical simulation of thermovibrational convection in a cubic cavity is performed for real parabolic flight conditions. The study is aimed at estimating the values of physical quantities that manifest the presence of thermovibrational flows and can be experimentally measured during short microgravity time (20 s).

Аннотация: The study of convective thermocapillary instabilities in liquid bridges [J. J. Xu and S. H. Davis, Phys. Fluids 27(5), 1102 (1984)] is revisited. A new branch of neutral mode m = 1 is found. The previously reported results are confirmed in the range of low Prandtl numbers. It is shown that for large Prandtl numbers, the flow becomes unstable at much smaller values of the Marangoni number than it was reported previously. The calculations are performed for adiabatic and heat conductive free surface. In both cases, the critical mode is m = 1. The previously reported change of critical mode from m = 1 to m = 0 with increasing the Prandtl number is not confirmed. The corrected results provide a better agreement with the experimental data. Аннотация: The IVIDIL (Influence of VIbrations on DIffusion in Liquids) experiment was aimed at utilizing the International Space Station for investigating the effects of vibrations on liquid diffusion and thermodiffusion. The SODI-IVIDIL project of ESA is gathering together European, Canadian and Russian researchers with complementary skills to prepare and carry out the experiment, to process the raw data and perform numerical modeling of the phenomena. The experiment IVIDIL started on the October 5, 2009. In total 55 experimental runs were successfully completed by 20 January, 2010. A general description of the ISS facility related to the diffusion experiments and accessible for European researchers is briefly presented and some details about IVIDIL instrument are given. The scientific interest of this short article is focused on one of the objectives of the experiment: performing precise measurements of diffusion and thermodiffusion coefficients for binary mixtures in the absence of gravity. We demonstrate possibility of the experimental environment and report on the first results related to measurements of mass transport coefficients in the mixture with the negative Soret effect: 10% isopropanol (IPA)–90% water.

Аннотация: Dust kinetic Alfven waves (DKAW) instability with Kappa-distributed ions streaming effects have been examined rigorously in a uniform dusty magnetoplasma. A dispersion relation of low-frequency DKAW instability on the dust acoustic velocity branch is obtained in a low-beta Lorentzian plasma. It is found that nonthermality is more effective for dust kinetic Alfven waves in the perpendicular component having finite larmor radius effects. Lorentzian type charging currents are obtained with the aid of Vlasov theory. Effect of different dust parameters on the growth rates of instability are considered. Damping/instability due to dust charge fluctuation is found to be insensitive to the form of the distribution function for DKAW. Possible applications to dusty space plasmas are pointed out.
