Phytoplankton functioning in large freshwater systems differing in their resources
/ N.M. Mineyeva, L.A. Shchur, N.A. Bondarenko // Hydrobiological Journal. - 2012. - Vol. 48, Is. 5. - pp. 19-30, DOI 10.1615/HydrobJ.v48.i5.20 . - ISSN 0018-8166
Аннотация: Comparative analysis of the functional characteristics of phytoplankton of the Baikal and Khanka lakes, and also of the reservoirs of the Volga and Yenisey rivers, differing in their energetic and mineral resources has shown that their algae cenoses differ in the dimensional composition of dominant species. It has been found that the development of phytoplankton depends on the content of nutrients, its photosynthesizing activity - on the content of nutrients and light regime, whereas the intensity and relationship between the processes of production and decomposition - on hydrological conditions and morphometric peculiarities of water bodies.     Comparative analysis of phytoplankton of the Baikal and Khanka lakes
[Text] / L.A. Shchur, N.A. Bondarenko // Hydrobiological Journal. - 2012. - Vol. 48, Is. 3. - pp. 14-23, DOI 10.1615/HydrobJ.v48.i3.20 . - ISSN 0018-8166
Аннотация: The structure and production potential of phytoplankton were studied in two large lakes of Asia, including the Baikal and Khanka lakes differing in their hydrological conditions. It has been found that the studied algae flora is saturated. The environmental conditions in the lakes are rather favorable to the development of algae. The functional characteristics of phytoplankton depended mainly on the regime of illumination, dimensional composition of algae, intensity of their development, vegetation stage, and also on the peculiarities of dominant forms biology.     Modern phytoplankton of the krasnoyarsk reservoir and the quality of its water
[Text] / L.A. Shchur // Hydrobiological Journal. - 2012. - Vol. 48, Is. 1. - pp. 3-12, DOI 10.1615/HydrobJ.v48.i1.10 . - ISSN 0018-8166
Аннотация: Three following periods were distinguished in the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir in 2000-2009: With low, middle, and high water levels. The largest number of phytoplankton species and infraspecific taxa (193) was found at a middle water level. Cyanophyta gave way to Bacillariophyta, which is indicative of the decrease in the trophic level of the reservoir. In terms of phytoplankton biomass and saprobic index, water quality in the reservoir corresponds to the third class and ?-mesosaprobic zone. В© 2012 Begell House, Inc.

biogenic and organic substances -- bacterio- and phytoplankton -- chlorophyll -- primary production

Аннотация: Multidisciplinary studies carried out in 2007-2008 revealed the features of concentration dynamics of biogenic and organic substances, bacterio- and phytoplankton, and chlorophyll in different reaches of the Enisei River. By the development state of bacterio- and phytoplankton, saprobity index, total primary production g O(2)/(m(2) day), and self-purification index, the water refers to the third quality class (satisfactorily clean), beta-mesosaprobic. The Enisei refers to the oligotrophic type upstream of the Angara mouth and to the mesotrophic type downstream of it.

West Siberia -- phytoplankton -- Bacillariophyta -- Centrophyceae

Аннотация: In the phytoplankton of northeastern West Siberian water bodies, Bacillariophyta were a dominant group of the 7 most abundant algal divisions, with the occurrence of the members of the class Centrophyceae varying from 27 to 100%. Scanning electron microscopy revealed complete species composition of the class Centrophyceae that dominates the phytoplankton of Lake Delingde, the Delingde and Bol'shaya Kheta rivers (Aulacoseira, 3 species; Cyclostephanos, 1; Cyclotella, 5; Discostella, 1; Melosira, 1; Pliocaenicus, 1; Puncticulata, 1; Stephanodiscus, 6). The phytoplankton of the class Centrophyceae in the Taz River now has a new member, Puncticulata radiosa. New species of the genus Cyclotella in West Siberian algal flora were revealed: C. arctica, C. comensis, and C. vorticosa. The findings helped more precisely define the ranges of the rare taxa and add new diagnostic features to the diagnoses of C. comensis and Stephanodiscus invisitatus.

phytoplankton -- productivity -- Volga -- Yenisei -- environmental factors -- geographic zoning

Аннотация: The relationship between plankton primary production and the geographic latitude suggests the dependence of biological productivity of water bodies on natural climatic conditions. Comparative analysis of the key factors governing phytoplankton productivity in the Volga and Yenisei rivers was made to reveal this relationship; these rivers represent two large river systems which extend in meridional direction, pass through various natural climatic zones, and differ in aquatic life habitats.

Relationships between the biomass and production of bacterio- and phytoplanktonic communities
/ A. D. Aponasenko, L. A. Shchur // Microbiology. - 2016. - Vol. 85, Is. 2. - P243-248, DOI 10.1134/S0026261716020028 . - ISSN 0026-2617
Аннотация: Quantitative ratios of the biomasses of bacterio- and phytoplankton, interrelation of their production characteristics, and association of the functional characteristics with environmental factors were studied for Lake Khanka, the Yenisei River, and the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir. The ratio between the biomasses of bacterioplankton (Bb) and phytoplankton (Bp) in these water bodies was shown to vary within the range exceeding three orders of magnitude. Bacterioplankton biomass was relatively stable and varied from sample to sample by an order of magnitude. In more than 50% of the samples (total sample number, 495), bacterioplankton biomass exceeded that of the phytoplankton. The average Bb/Bp ratios for Lake Khanka, Yenisei River, and Krasnoyarsk Reservoir were 5.1, 2, and 1.4, respectively. Increased Bb/Bp ratios were found to correlate with elevated specific (per unit biomass) phytoplankton production. This finding indicated additional supply of biogenic elements to phytoplankton due to their recycling by bacterial communities. The ratio between bacterioplankton and phytoplankton production for Lake Khanka varied from year to year (0.07 to 0.76). For the Yenisei River and the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir these ratios were on average 0.19 and 0.27, respectively. According to the literature data for other water bodies, bacterial production may reach from 10 to over 100% of the primary production. The equilibrium density of bacterioplankton (maximal density of the population) in Lake Khanka was ~1.5 times higher than in the Yenisei River and the Krasnoyarsk Reservoir due to higher content of suspended mineral matter and associated organo-mineral detritus in the lake. The interaction between dissolved organic compounds sorbed on the surface of mineral particles results in chemical alteration of biochemically stable substrate into compounds which may be assimilated by aquatic microorganisms. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
