Аннотация: A mathematical model concerning the interaction of plants and rhizospheric microorganisms on complete mineral medium and under nitrogen limitation has been constructed. The model takes into account the closeness of plants and microorganisms in terms of the matter released by the plant and consumed by the microorganisms. The effect of rhizospheric microorganisms on plant growth with normal carbon dioxide and complete mineral medium has been demonstrated. Plants interacting with microorganisms have a greater biomass than plants growing without microorganisms. Wheat growth stimulation by metabolites of rhizospheric microorganisms under laboratory conditions on artificial soil has been experimentally demonstrated (Pechurkin, 1997). Under nitrogen limitation , the biomass of plants, with or without microorganisms, is identical, and is substantially reduced as compared with the medium with standard nitrogen. В© 1999 COSPAR. Аннотация: Wheat was cultivated on soil-like substrate (SLS) produced by the action of worms and microflora from the inedible biomass of wheat. After the growth of the wheat crop, the inedible biomass was restored in SLS and exposed to decomposition ("biological" combustion) and its mineral compounds were assimilated by plants. Grain was returned to the SLS in the amount equivalent to human solid waste produced by consumption of the grain. Human wastes (urine and feces) after physicochemical processing turned into mineralized form (mineralized urine and mineralized feces) and entered the plants' nutrient solution amounts equal to average daily production. Periodically (once every 60-70 days) the nutrient solution was partly (up to 50%) desalinated by electrodialysis. Due to this NaCl concentration in the nutrient solution was sustained at a fixed level of about 0.26%. The salt concentrate obtained could be used in the human nutrition through NaCl extraction and the residuary elements were returned through the mineralized human liquid wastes into matter turnover. The control wheat cultivation was carried out on peat with use of the Knop nutrient solution. Serial cultivation of several wheat vegetations within 280 days was conducted during the experiment. Grain output varied and yield/harvest depended, in large part, upon the amount of inedible biomass returned to SLS and the speed of its decomposition. After achieving a stationary regime, (when the quantity of wheat inedible biomass utilized during vegetation in SLS is equal to the quantity of biomass introduced into SLS before vegetation) grain harvest in comparison with the control was at most 30% less, and in some cases was comparable to the control harvest values. The investigations carried out on the wheat example demonstrated in principle the possibility of long-term functioning of the LSS photosynthesizing link based on optimizations of biological and physicochemical methods of utilization of the human and plants wastes. The possibilities for the use of these technologies for the creation integrated biological-physicochemical LSS with high closure degree of internal matter turnover are discussed in this paper. Аннотация: To create a life support system based on biological and physical-chemical processes is the optimum solution providing full-valued condidtions for existence and efficient work of people at a lunar base. Long-standing experinece in experimental research or closed ecosystems and their components allows us to suggest a realistic functional structure of the lunar base and to estimate qualitatively its parameters. The original restrictions are as follows: 1) the basic source of energy to support the biological processes has to be the solar radiation; 2) the initial amount of basic biological elelments forming the turnover of substances (C, O, H, P, K, N) has to be delivered from Earth; 3). Moon materials are not to be used in the biological turnover inside the base; 4) the base is to supply the crew fully with atmosphere and water, and with 90% (A scenario) or 40% (B scenario) of food. Experimental data about the plant productivity under the "Moon" rhythm of light and darkness allow us to suggest that the A scenario requires per one human: plant area - 40 m2 irradiated during the lunar day by 250-300 W/m2 PAR producing 1250 g of dry biomass a terrestrial day; a heterotrophic component of "biological incineration" of inedible plant biomass (800 g/day) including the aquaculture of fish to produce animal products and contaminating the environment less than birds and mammals, and the culture of edible mushrooms; a component of physical-chemical correction for the LSS envi ronment including the subsystems of: deep oxidation of organic impurities in the atmosphere and of water, organic wastes of human activity and that biological components (420 g/day) Co2 concentration in "Moon" nights, damping O2 in "Moon" days, etc. The stock of presotred or delivered from Earth substances (food additions, seeds, etc.) to be involved in biological turnover is to be about 50 kg/year per man. Increase of the mass of prestored substances per man up to 220 kg/year would reduce twice the plant area and consumed amount of radiant energy to exclude the components of "biological incineration" and physical-chemical destruction of organic wastes. Аннотация: Dynamics of catalase activity has been shown to reflect the growth curve of microorganisms in batch cultivation (celluloselythic bacteria Bacillus acidocaldarius and bacteria of the associated microflora Chlorella vulgaris). Gas and substrate closure of the three component ecosystems with spatially separated components "producer-consumer-reducer" (Chl. vulgaris-Paramecium caudatum-B. acidocaldarius, two bacterial strains isolated from the associated microflora Chl. vulgaris) demonstrated that the functioning of the reducer component can be estimated by the catalase activity of microorganisms of this component. Аннотация: The usage of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) for estimating various types of plant resistance (primary, general, initial, adaptive) to stress factors is reviewed. The necessity of ontogenetic approach (considering the age-specific properties of the photosynthetic apparatus) in determining general and adaptive resistance of plants to prolonged action of stress factors by the CFI method is argued. In the plant Cucumbis sativus L., the possibility is shown of using age-specific qualitative and quantitative traits of leaf CFI (changes in the shape of chlorophyll fluorescence induction curves and in the dynamics of CFI parameters in the course of leaf ontogeny) for comparative study of differences between fully active and stressed plants. Possible criteria are suggested for estimating the effect of outer stress factors by the presence or absence of a steady-state phase in the dynamics of CFI parameters during leaf ontogeny. It is also suggested to use the duration of the steady-state phase following the termination of leaf growth (estimated by the dynamics of the slow phase of CFI as the ratio of fluorescence intensity at the peak P and the steady-state fluorescence intensity, FP/FS, or as the viability index Rfd) and the variability of CFI parameters during this period as qualitative estimates of plant resistance to prolonged action of stress factors.

Аннотация: The circadian rhythm of grazing of microalgae by a laboratory culture of Ceriodaphnia quadrangula under continuous illumination was studied by continuous registration of chlorophyll fluorescence at the outlet of a flow-through cultivator. A culture of green alga Chlorella vulgaris was used as a feed. The data obtained were treated by the statistical spectral analysis. It was found that animals preliminarily grown under a 12 h light: 12 h dark regime and transferred to constant light showed two maxima in the circadian rhythm of grazing with periods of 0.7 and 1.1 h. Animals preliminarily grown under constant light showed no circadian rhythm of grazing. It was concluded that the circadian rhythm of grazing of C. quadrangula has endogenous nature and can change according to light conditions.

Аннотация: Colonies produced by a consortium of nitrifying bacteria were studied using light and electron microscopy. The colonies were obtained by direct plating of inoculum from a two-stage nonsterile chemostat fermentor and by repeatedly passing the microbial community of the fermenter through selective media containing ammonium or nitrite. The colonies studied can be characterized by a specific combination of six types of cells differing in their ultrastructure and spatial location within the colony. The types of cells occurring within a given colony were found to depend on the nitrogen compound present in the medium. As a result of our study, morphological features of colonial bacterial communities were preliminarily identified. The proposed approach can be viewed as a method to describe microbial associations and communities.

Аннотация: This study addresses competition between the Paramecium bursaria and zoochlorella - endosymbiosis and the infusoria Paramecium caudatum in a closed aquatic system. The system is a natural model of a simple biotic cycle. P. bursaria consumes glucose and oxygen released by its zoochlorella and releases nitrogenous compounds and carbon dioxide necessary for algal photosynthesis. P. caudatum was fed on bacteria. It was shown that the infusoria P. bursaria united in one cycle with Chlorella had a higher competitive ability than P. caudatum. With any initial percentage of the infusoria in the mixed culture, the end portion of P. bursaria reached 90 - 99%, which was significantly higher than the end portion of the P. caudatum population. It is assumed that the sustenance expenditures of P. caudatum were greater than those of the endosymbiotic paramecium, i.e. the closing of the components into a biotic cycle leads to a decrease in sustenance expenditures. Аннотация: A short survey and critical analysis of previously proposed criteria for growth control of populations of microorganisms in the chemostat are presented. Based on the analysis of a mathematical model of the steady-state of a microbial population in the chemostat, an adequate control criterion is suggested, along with a method to identify the corresponding regulating factors. The new control criterion is expressed as a product of the factor transformation coefficient and the biomass sensitivity coefficient (SC) with respect to the change of the factor at the chemostat inlet (referred to in the sequel as the biomass SC). The control criterion determines the strength of the control exerted by this or that factor. The method of determination of the regulating factors consists in experimental determination of the real SCs for factors and the biomass and in calculating on this basis the corresponding ideal SCs for constant factor transformation coefficients. The ideal SCs are shown to add up to an integer value, a constraint that we call "quantization" relationships. Such relationships are used to test the completeness of the drawn list of control factors. The proposed method was applied to our own and literature data.

Аннотация: In the present investigation, the role of dietary intervention in male Wistar rats (n = 8, 3 groups) was studied to observe absolute sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) levels (expressed as ng mg(-1) total protein) in serum, stomach, liver, and kidney. Dietary buckwheat at 30% (w/w) level of incorporation in the standard diet (Buckwheat Enriched Diet, BED) improved SIRT1 with values 0.933 +/- 0.05, 210 +/- 7, 63.26 +/- 4, and 69.89 +/- 3 in serum, stomach, liver, and kidney respectively when compared to the respective control values of 0.536 +/- 0.03, 156 +/- 23.3, 31.07 +/- 2 and 47.11 +/- 4. Moreover, BED though isocaloric to CR diet, led to weight gain (g) by 63.11 +/- 3.8, ca. 10%, and 40% higher than control (56.27 +/- 5.6) and CR (45.05 +/- 4.1) diet groups. A marked rise in Feed Efficiency Ratio (FER) by ca. 37% while a 30% decrease in Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) was observed for the BED group which supports unexpected weight gain in rats post-dietary intervention. The results justify the superior nutritional profile of buckwheat laden with essential nutrients, essential proteins, and bioactives. In contrast, Calorie Restriction (CR) resulted in a decline of the total protein content in circulation by 19%, while reduction of total protein in stomach, liver, and kidney was estimated to be 95%, 35.2%, and 27% respectively though SIRT1 values were comparatively the highest in all the samples studied. A 30-fold enhancement of SIRT1 in stomach post CR is presumed to counter enhanced stress in gastric tissues. Therefore, mild to moderate expression of SIRT1 may confer beneficial effects such as delayed aging and stress resistance but exceedingly high SIRT1 may evoke increased oxidative stress.

Аннотация: The dynamics of accumulation of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and the activities of the key enzymes of PHB metabolism (beta-ketothiolase, acetoacetyl-CoA reductase, PHA synthase, D-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, and PHA depolymerase) in the hydrogen bacterium Ralstonia eutropha B5786 were studied under various conditions of carbon nutrition and substrate availability. The highest activities of beta-ketothiolase, acetoacetyl-CoA reductase, and PHA synthase were recorded at the stage of acceleration of PHB synthesis. The activities of enzymes catalyzing PHB depolymerization (PHB depolymerase and D-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase) were low, being expressed only at stimulated endogenous PHB degradation. The change of carbon source (CO2 or fructose) did not cause any marked changes in the time course of enzyme activity.

Аннотация: Effect of the size of rhizospheric bacterial populations on germination of seeds and development of simple terrestrial "wheat plants - rhizospheric microorganisms - artificial soil" and "wheat plants - artificial soil" systems has been studied. Experiments demonstrated that within specify ranges in the inoculate, the rhizospheric bacteria are capable of increasing the yield of germinated seeds and stimulate the growth of plantlets. Germination of seeds inoculated with bacteria was either stimulated, or inhibited or remained at control levels depending on the amount of bacteria. Plant biomass growth and total photoassimilation has been found to depend on the amount of bacteria on the plant roots: the higher the amount of bacteria on plant roots, the smaller is the biomass of plants but the total photoassimilation is, higher. Thus, depending on the amount of bacteria on the roots of plants the system either increases the biomass of plants or increases the total photoassimilation, i.e. "pumps" carbon through itself involving bacteria. Аннотация: One of the central paradigms of ecology is that only about 10% of organic carbon production of one trophic level is incorporated into new biomass of organisms of the next trophic level. Many of energy-yielding compounds of carbon are designated as 'essential', because they cannot be synthesized de novo by consumers and must be obtained with food, while they play important structural and regulatory functions. The question arises: are the essential compounds transferred through trophic chains with the same efficiency as bulk carbon? To answer this question, we measured gross primary production of phytoplankton and secondary production of zooplankton and content of organic carbon and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids of ?-3 family with 18-22 carbon atoms (PUFA) in the biomass of phytoplankton and zooplankton in a small eutrophic reservoir during two summers. Transfer efficiency between the two trophic levels, phytoplankton (producers) and zooplankton (consumers), was calculated as ratio of the primary production versus the secondary (zooplankton) production for both carbon and PUFA. We found that the essential PUFA were transferred from the producers to the primary consumers with about twice higher efficiency than bulk carbon. In contrast, polyunsaturated fatty acids with 16 carbon atoms, which are synthesized exclusively by phytoplankton, but are not essential for animals, had significantly lower transfer efficiency than both bulk carbon, and essential PUFA. Thus, the trophic pyramid concept, which implicitly implies that all the energy-yielding compounds of carbon are transferred from one trophic level to the next with the same efficiency of about on average 10%, should be specified for different carbon compounds.
