Аннотация: The vertical structure of the ecosystem in the euphotic zone of the western Equatorial Pacific has been studied. The studies were based on a continuous sounding of the bioluminescence field, with simultaneous, vertically aimed sampling made with the aid of a 5l water bottle and plankton nets. The bioluminescence field has a two-maxima structure with a more pronounced and permanent lower maximum found in the oligotrophic regions as deep as 60 to 100 m. In the narrow (10 m) layer of maximum bioluminescence, the concentration of zooplankton, as well as the concentration, activity and production of bacteria and phytoplankton, are several times higher than those in immediately adjacent waters at greater or lesser depth. At the same time, the concentration of nutrient salts in that layer diminishes sharply and approaches zero in the overlying water. Analysis of the data obtained shows that the production processes above the lower maximum layer are dependent not only on the turbulent influx of nutrient salts from the underlying layers, but also on the horizontal supply from the zone of upwelling. A pelagic community, in its different time aspects from the moment of water ascending until its sinking in the convergence zone, is suggested as a common system for modelling. Аннотация: The dynamics of the amino acid composition of the perfusion fluid was investigated during adequate perfusion of isolated dog organs (the thorax and a complex consisting of the thoracic organs, kidneys, and liver). The concentration of amino acids such as histidine, lysine, and alanine in the perfusion fluid 6 h after the beginning of perfusion of the organ complex was higher, whereas that of arginine, serine, aspartic acid, threonine with glutamine, isoleucine, proline, leucine, and valine was much lower than initially. In experiments on the isolated thorax the dynamics of the amino acid composition of the medium was studied during perfusion for 4 h. The concentration of alanine, lysine, and histidine in the medium increased, whereas those of serine, aspartic acid, isoleucine, tyrosine, and phenylalanine decreased.

Аннотация: The dynamics of the amino acid composition of the medium was investigated during perfusion of the dog liver and kidney for 6 h with a mixture of autogenous plasma and medium No.199 in the ratio of 2:3. During culture of the kidney for 6 h the histidine concentration in the medium increased by 2.2 times compared with initially, the concentration of glutamic acid by 1.7 times, and of alanine and lysine by 1.6 times, whereas the concentrations of arginine, serine, and aspartic acid fell by 3.3 times and those of glutamine with threonine by 2.5 times. During perfusion of the liver the concentration of glutamic acid rose by 2.9 times, of alanine by 2.3 times, cystine by 2.0 times, and glycine by 1.5 times. The concentration of tyrosine fell by half, and that of phenylalanine and serine by 1.4 times. The arginine concentration fell so quickly during perfusion of the liver that by the second hour after the beginning of perfusion no arginine could be found in the medium. The method of amino acid analysis during organ culture as described can be used as a method of developing and correcting culture media.

Аннотация: For analytical purposes bioluminescence can be used in three main ways: 1. luminescence measurement of bioluminescent system components isolated in vitro; 2. determination of luminous organisms' reaction to the in vivo test-action; 3. measurement of bioluminescence in marine ecological systems. The majority of the reports of this Symposium are dealing with the first two topics. The aim of our presentation is to draw attention to the third one. The possibilities of bioluminescent analysis are wider than its traditional scheme of applications in the laboratory, when the emitting system is withdrawn from a native source and is placed in a cuvette of the light measuring device. The reverse scheme is also possible, i.e. the device can be introduced into light emitting system such as a marine biocenosis--the community of the sea inhabitants--where we obtain a highly sensitive and rapid means of gaining the information on the vital activity of marine ecosystems, i.e. their spatial structure, rhythms, man's influence upon them, etc. The present communication will consider the possibilities of this form of bioluminescent analysis.

Аннотация: Artificial, closed ecosystems are potentially useful tools with which to explore ecosystem interactions, allowing investigations of the biology, physiology and biophysics of complex communities. They can also be used to evaluate the long-term effects of environmental constituents that are usually present at very low concentrations. The introduction of humans into such systems extends their usefulness even further, allowing the study of the influence of the environment on people, and the effects of people on the environment. Because of the great potential of such systems in adding to human knowledge, and their considerable expense, it is appropriate that such activities be international studies. The Institute of Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Siberian Branch) has established, The International Research Center for Closed Ecosystems (Biospherics). It is located in Central Siberia near Krasnoyarsk on the Yenissei river, and is open to all interested investigators. В© Copyright 1994 Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc.

Аннотация: The article is devoted to analysis of the internal gene structure with respect to redundancy of exons and introns. Human genes with precisely determined exon-intron structure were studied. Redundancy of each exon and intron within a certain gene was measured. In the analyzed human genes, introns were more redundant than exons. Redundancy was determined as the minimal length of a word (oligonucleotide) that is present as a single copy within the nucleotide sequence studied. Mechanisms are discussed that lead to disturbances in the relationships found between the redundancies of exons and introns.
