Аннотация: The circadian rhythm of grazing of microalgae by a laboratory culture of Ceriodaphnia quadrangula under continuous illumination was studied by continuous registration of chlorophyll fluorescence at the outlet of a flow-through cultivator. A culture of green alga Chlorella vulgaris was used as a feed. The data obtained were treated by the statistical spectral analysis. It was found that animals preliminarily grown under a 12 h light : 12 h dark regime and transferred to constant light showed two maxima in the circadian rhythm of grazing with periods of 0.7 and 1.1 h. Animals preliminarily grown under constant light showed no circadian rhythm of grazing. It was concluded that the circadian rhythm of grazing of C. quadrangula has endogenous nature and can change according to light conditions.

Аннотация: The brightness spectra of the Krasnoyarsk and Dnepr reservoir systems are presented for various periods of their development, from the beginning of their filling to the final stage of their formation. The curves of the surface distribution of chlorophyll a, which were remotely obtained from the brightness coefficient spectra, are found to be monotonic when diatomaceous, green protococcus, and dinophyte algae dominate in the phytoplankton. In the presence of blue-green algae, the curve of the distribution of phytoplankton on the surface is essentially irregular. The irregularities range from tens to hundreds of meters with sharp gradients of the phytoplankton concentration. The negative values of the VI color index change for positive ones when the concentration of chlorophyll a of the phytoplankton in the subsurface layer Cchl > 250-270 mg/m3. This is associated with the change in the species composition of the phytoplankton from the dominating diatom forms to bluegreen algae. Copyright В© 2005 by Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: The effect of ambient temperature on the composition of intracellular fatty acids and the release of free fatty acids (FFA) into a medium by cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis and eukaryotic microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris and Botryococcus braunii, was studied using their batch cultures. It was found that all the species studied, regardless of their taxonomic status, responded to the temperature regime by similar changes in their intracellular fatty acid composition: the relative content of more unsaturated fatty acids decreased with the elevation of temperature. At the same time, in the prokaryote, this temperature shift blocked, first of all, the elongation of 16: 0 to 18:0 and then their further desaturation. In eukaryotes, the change in the desaturation of dienoic to trienoic fatty acids was the most pronounced process. The ratio of dienoic to trienoic fatty acids remained almost unchanged in S. platensis. The relative content of extracellular unsaturated FFA increased in the prokaryotic organism S. platensis at a higher temperature. But no significant changes in the composition of extracellular unsaturated FFA were detected in eukaryotic algae upon temperature elevation.

Аннотация: Studies were conducted to investigate the antibiotic resistance of freshwater, halophile and moderate halotolerant bacteria isolated from the nearshore part of Shira lake, which is affected by the activity of a health resort, and from the central part of the lake in the summer (June to August) of 1999. It has been shown that the allochthonous microflora, which is brought into the lake with the resort effluent in mid-summer, is the anthropogenic factor contributing to an increase in the number of freshwater bacteria that feature multiple antibiotic resistance in the central part of the lake. It has been found that resistance to ampicillin of freshwater and halophile heterotrophic bacteria is related to the increase in the biomass of blue-green and green algae in the central part of Shira lake between mid-July and the end of August. A mathematical model has been constructed to describe the dynamics of the antibiotic resistance of heterotrophic bacteria in the close-to-resort and the central parts of Shira lake under natural and anthropogenic impacts.

Аннотация: The effect of nitrogen limitation in a medium on the composition of intracellular lipids in the alga Botryococcus braunii Kutz IPPAS H-252 in the course of culture development was investigated. Under the conditions of nitrogen limitation, the alga under investigation accumulated lipids as triacylglycerols, and this process was accompanied by substantial changes in the total fatty acid (FA) composition, which were manifested in a decrease in trienoic acids (from 52.8-57.2 to 19.5-24.7% of total FAs) and an increase in the content of oleic (from 1.1-1.2 to 17.1-24.4%) and saturated (from 23.7-26.0 to 32.9-46.1%) acids. In the control culture, the directionality of FA redistribution was less marked, and these changes were noticed at the later stages of culture development. Under nitrogen limitation, marked changes in the FA composition of polar lipids occurred by the 13th day, and they were characterized by an increase in the content of saturated acids (up to 76.8%) and a dramatic decrease in the content of all polyenoic acids (up to 6.8%). The changes in the FA composition of triacylglycerols were noticed as early as by the 7th day; these changes consisted in an increase in the content of oleic acid, and its high content (28.4-38.4%) was maintained up to the end of culturing. In the control culture, triacylglycerols with a high content of oleic acid were found by the 13th day, although, by this time, the content of total lipids and triacylglycerols did not change. Аннотация: During two vegetation seasons (2004-2005), we compared feeding spectra of Arctodiaptomus salinus (Calanoida, Copepoda) populations inhabiting two neighboring salt lakes, Shira and Shunet, Khakasia, Russia, using fatty acid (FA) trophic markers. Sestonic FA composition in two lakes moderately differed, whereas levels of diatom FA markers were higher in Lake Shunet and of Cyanobacteria and green algae markers in Lake Shira. In general, markers in storage lipids-triacylglycerols (TAG) of A. salinus-reflected the differences in sestonic composition of the two lakes. Nevertheless, TAG fraction was also enriched by FA trophic markers of the minor components of seston, which were selectively ingested by the animals. In Lake Shira, A. salinus had significantly higher concentrations of bacterial FA markers in TAG. In Lake Shunet, TAG of A. salinus contained significantly higher relative amounts of 18:4?3, 18:5?3 and C22 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), which indicated marked contribution of cryptophytes or (and) flagellates into the diet. Laboratory experiments showed feeding on Cryptomonas and sulfur purple bacteria in Lake Shunet and ciliates and colonial picoplankton in both lakes, and generally confirmed the differences in FA trophic markers in A. salinus between the lakes. The two populations of A. salinus markedly differed in levels of essential long-chain PUFA, eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids, although the levels of these FA in seston were quite similar between the two lakes. The higher levels of the essential ?3 PUFA in A. salinus in Lake Shunet may be an adaptive response of the animals to a vertical stratification of physico-chemical conditions and significantly higher salinity levels at the boundary of adjacent bottom layer in this lake. Аннотация: Data on the seasonal changes in vertical heterogeneity of the physical-chemical and biological parameters of the thermally stratified Shira Lake ecosystem (Khakasia, Siberia) in 1996-2000 have been analyzed. The interaction mechanisms involving: (1) The plankton populations in aerobic and anaerobic zones, involving the cycling of carbon and sulphur, (2) the primary production limitation (by light and phosphorus) and inhibition (by light), and (3) the kinetic characteristics of plankton populations have been elucidated. A mathematical model of the vertical structure of the lake's plankton populations, based on the ecosystem description and on vertical turbulent diffusion of the matter, has been constructed. The green alga Dictyosphaerium tetrachotomum (Chlorophyta) and the cyanobacterium Lyngbya contorta (Cyanophyta), which dominated the phytoplankton biomass, were taken as oxygen producers. Arctodiaptomus salinus (a calanoid copepod) has been assumed as the main grazer in Shira Lake as it dominated the zooplankton biomass. Four groups of microorganisms involved in the sulphur cycle formation have been distinguished: sulphur, sulphur purple, sulphur green and SRB. H2S is oxidized to sulphate (only the green sulphur bacteria oxidize it to sulphur), and sulphate is reduced to H2S, forming neither sulphur nor its water-soluble compounds. The role of grazing, light and nutrient limitation, in forming the vertical inhomogeneities, particularly in lowering the depth of the maximal cyanobacterial biomass, has been demonstrated. When the model takes into account both light limitation and nutrient limitation of algal growth by P and consumption of algae by crustaceans: (a) in the scenario where the P is formed only by the cycling and decomposition of autochthonous organic matter, both the green algae and cyanobacteria are eliminated; (b) in the scenario involving an additional P flux in the deep water layers the peak of the cyanobacteria is at a depth of 10 m, and its amplitude is close to the one observed in the lake. The position of the peak remains stable owing to the 'double' limitation mechanism: light 'from above' and P 'from below'. Another mechanism responsible for the deep position of the peak of cyanobacteria was analyzed mathematically based on the model involving the experimentally proven assumption of the growth inhibition by light in the epilimnion and the light limitation in the hypolimnion. The main result is: the peak is positioned stable at its depth and does not change with time. The analytical and numerical calculations made for this positioning mechanism yielded the formulae relating the depth of the maximum of algal biomass, the 'width' of the peak base and the peak amplitude and a number of parameters (algae elimination, turbulent diffusion coefficient, sedimentation rate, light extinction coefficient and light intensity). The theoretical curves for the stratification of chemical and biological parameters have been brought in conformity with field observations, e.g. for the different patterns for the peaks, and the biomass maxima of cyanobacteria, purple and green sulphur bacteria, oxygen, and hydrogen sulphide. The calculations revealed that for an adequate assessment of the parameters for the hydrogen sulphide zone it is necessary to introduce flows of allochthonous organic matter. For the first time, theoretically, based on the form of the sulphur distribution curve, the allochthonous input of organic matter and the inflow of hydrogen sulphide from the bottom have been discriminated. The theoretical limit for the depth up to which the hydrogen-sulphide zone can ascend under the impact of allochthonous organic loading, has been determined.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): nuisance algal blooms--ulva--cladophora--spirogyra--metaphyton--benthification
Аннотация: In recent decades, alongside the comparatively well-studied bloom caused by phytoplankton, a bloom of marine and fresh waters caused by littoral benthic macroalgae of three generaUlva, Cladophora, and Spirogyrahave become a global phenomenon. In the present review, an attempt is made to gain an understanding of why it is these taxa of green filamentous algae that start to grow rapidly in the spring in many water bodies and streams, including oligotrophic waters, and then float up from the bottom, forming floating mats (metaphyton); then their decaying masses are washed ashore and cause substantial ecological and economical losses. Peculiar and common ecological and physiological features of Ulva, Cladophora, and Spirogyra favorable for the formation of green tides are considered. Although eutrophication (the supply of nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural lands, industrial and domestic wastewaters, and aquaculture) is the evident cause of the increase in algal biomass, it is suggested that the location of external fluxes of inorganic nutrients (surface runoff or groundwater discharge), as well as the biogenic redirection of internal fluxes of nitrogen and phosphorus from pelagial to littoral (benthification), play a key role in the formation of green tides. Measures for controlling green tides are discussed. The necessity for detailed studies of the metaphytonic form of vegetation of benthic macroalgae is emphasized. Obviously, a revision of the present concept of oligotrophic/eutrophic waters which considers only the pelagic compartments of aquatic ecosystems is required.

Аннотация: A study has been carried out to investigate the influence of nitrogen deficiency on intracellular lipid composition, including total fatty acid composition of lipids, polar lipids, and triacylglycerols, of the alga Botryococcus braunii Kutz IPPAS H-252 in batch culture. Under nitrogen limitation, the alga accumulates lipids as triacylglycerols and the total fatty acid (FA) composition changes: trienoic acids decrease (from 52.8-57.2 to 19.5-24.7% of the total FAs) and the oleic acid increases (from 1.1-1.2 to 17.1-24.4%) as does the saturated acids (from 23.7-26 to 32.9-46.1%). A similar rearrangement in the FA spectrum occurs at later times in the control culture, but it is less pronounced. Under nitrogen limitation, considerable changes in the polar lipid FAs are registered at day 13: saturated acids increase (from 28.6-35.5 to 76.8%) and all polyenoic acids markedly decrease (from 56.9-64.1 to 6.8%). Changes in the triacylglycerol fatty acid spectrum are seen on day 7: the oleic acid increases (from 14.7 to 34.2%) and remains at a high level till the end of the culture. In the control, triacylglycerols with large contents of oleic acid are detected at day 13, the total lipids and triacylglycerols still remaining unchanged. В© Springer 2005.

Аннотация: The specific composition, vertical distribution and daily migration of plankton in a meromictic salt lake, Lake Shira, have been investigated. The main structural components of the ecosystem are bacteria, algae and crustaceans. Since the late 1970s, blue-green algae are reported as dominant. Nowadays the phytoplankton is dominated by Lyngbya contorta, Microcystis ichtyoblabe (Cyanophyta), Cyclotella tuberculata (Bacillariophyta) and Dictyosphaerium tetrachotomum (Chlorophyta). The zooplankton of Lake Shira comprises Arctodiaptomus salinus (Copepoda), Brachionus plicatilis and Hexarthra oxiuris (Rotatoria). Investigation revealed a stratified vertical distribution of all dominant species except Cyclotella with a maximum at a depth of 12-15 m during the summer growth period. Zooplanktons differ in the pattern of distribution and daily migration, but most zooplankton tend to concentrate near the surface. The possible reasons for the vertical distribution of the plankton are discussed.

Аннотация: Lipid composition and hydrocarbon structure of two colonial green algae of the genus Botryococcus, i.e., a mu seum strain and a field sample collected for the first time from Lake Shira (Khakasia, Siberia), have been compared. Polar lipids, diacylglycerols, alcohols, triacylglycerols, sterols, sterol esters, free fatty acids and hydrocarbons have been identified among lipids in the laboratory culture. The dominant fraction in the museum strain was formed by polar lipids (up to 50% of the lipids) made up of fatty acids from C12 to C24. Palmitic, oleic, C16 - C18 dienoic and trienoic acids were the main fatty acids of the museum strain. Aliphatic hydrocarbons were found in the lipid of the museum strain. However, these amounted maximally to about 1% of the dry biomass at the end of exponential growth phase. The qualitative and quantitative compositions of FAs and hydrocarbons of the museum strain of Botryococcus, (registered at the Cambridge collection as Botryococcus braunii Kutz No LB 807/1 Droop 1950 H-252) differed from those of the Botryococcus strain described in the literature as Botryococcus braunii. The Botryococcus sp. found in Lake Shira is characterized by a higher lipid content (< 40% of the dry weight). Polar lipids, sterols, triacylglycerols, free fatty acids and hydrocarbons have been identified among lipids in the field sample. The main lipids in this sample were dienes and trienes (hydrocarbons < 60% of total lipid). Monounsaturated and very long chain monounsaturated fatty acids, including C28:1 and C32:1 acids, were identified in the Botryococcus found in Lake Shira. The chemo-taxonomic criteria allow us to unequivocally characterize the organism collected from Lake Shira as Botryococcus braunii race A.

Аннотация: 1. We studied the composition of fatty acids (FAs) in the seston from two small freshwater reservoirs (Bugach and Lesnoi) with distinct periodicity of domination by cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae during the growth season. 2. The diatoms in the both reservoirs were characterised by a high content of 14:0 and C16 unsaturated acids, whereas that of the essential FA 20:5?3 [eicosapentanoic acid (EPA)] was low. The correlation between this polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) and diatom biomass was not significant in either reservoir. The percentage of 20:5?3 in seston significantly correlated with the biomass of euglenophyta in Bugach and dinophyta in Lesnoi. Hence the diatoms, usually referred as a valuable food for zooplankton, were not an important source of the essential PUFA in these systems. 3. The dominant cyanobacteria in Bugach, and the green algae in Lesnoi, both contained the same marker acids: 18:3?3 and 18:2?6. Hence, a discrimination between these two phytoplanktonic groups on the basis of FA biomarkers may be difficult in some cases. 4. We found no significant correlation between the content of 20:5?3 in seston and the biomass of the dominant daphniids in either reservoir. This is contrary to expectations, based on the literature, that EPA is generally important. Rather, the biomass of the two dominant Daphnia species in Bugach correlated strongly with the content of 18:3?3 in the seston. The cyanobacteria were a probable source of this ?3 FA for Daphnia. We conclude that EPA is not always important for Daphnia populations although, in such cases, some other PUFA (e.g. 18:3?3) might be related to their growth.

Аннотация: We studied fatty acid (FA) composition of littoral microalgae in the fast-flowing oligotrophic river, the Yenisei, Siberia, monthly for 3 years. Seasonal dynamics of species composition had similar patterns in all the studied years. In springs, a pronounced dominance of filamentous green algae occurred, in summer and autumn diatoms were abundant, and in late autumn and winter epilithic biofilms consisted primarily of cyanobacteria and detritus. In general, FA composition of the algal periphytic community was dominated by 16:0, 16:1?7, 20:5?3, 14:0, and 18:3?3 throughout the studied period. Several groups of FAs, which had peculiar seasonal dynamics, were differentiated by statistical analysis based on a method of correlation graphs. The seasonal changes in FA composition could be partly explained by the seasonal succession of species composition of the community. Besides, we found that populations of both diatom and green algae grown in summer at a higher water temperature were lower in polyunsaturated fatty acids than those in spring, at a lower temperature. Hence, we suppose that the regular seasonal dynamics of FA composition of the studied littoral microalgae was driven both by changes in species composition and by temperature adaptations of the algal populations. The highest content of essential polyunsaturated FAs, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, in the spring "psychrophilic" populations of diatoms could make them of the higher nutritive value for zoobenthic primary consumers. Аннотация: The concentrations of metals K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Co and Cr, in the water and periphyton (epilithic algal communities) were studied at a site in the middle stream of the Yenisei River (Siberia, Russia) during three years using monthly sampling frequencies. Despite considerable seasonal variations in aquatic concentrations of some metals, there was no correlation between metal contents in the water and in periphyton. Seasonal concentration variations of some metals in periphyton were related to the species (taxonomic) composition of periphytic microalgae and cyanobacteria. Enhanced levels of Ni and Co in periphyton in late autumn, winter, and early spring were likely caused by the predominance of cyanobacteria in the periphytic community, and annual maximum levels of K in periphyton in late spring and early summer were attributed to the domination of Chlorophyta, primarily Ulothrix zonata. Аннотация: The structure of liquid hydrocarbons and fatty acids produced by the green alga Botryococcus was identified. Two representatives of this alga, Botryococcus braunii Kutz, strain IPPAS H-252, introduced into culture earlier and an organism isolated for the first time from the Shira Lake, were used for this identification. Fatty acid composition of B. braunii, strain H-252, lipids was characterized by a high content of trienoic acids of C16-C18 series. The hydrocarbon composition of this strain was represented by straight-chain and branched-chain C14-C28 components; long-chain linear aliphatic C20-C27 hydrocarbons (54.4%) and 2,6,10,14-tetramethylhexadecane (20.5%) predominated among them. The strain H-252 differed in its fatty acid and hydrocarbon composition from the strains described earlier as Botryococcus braunii. The fatty acid composition of the Botryococcus isolate was represented mainly by C12-C32 saturated and monoenoic acids. The hydrocarbons formed by this isolate were represented by dienoic and trienoic components. C29 (48.9-56.3%) and C31 (11.1-16.3%) hydrocarbons predominated among the C23-C31 dienoic hydrocarbons, and C27, C29, and C31 trienoic hydrocarbons comprised 2.5-2.6% of total hydrocarbons. This type of hydrocarbons and the lipid fatty acid composition were characteristic for the race A of B. braunii.

Аннотация: Spectral brightness coefficients are correlated with indices of vertical attenuation of horizontal irradiance, water transparency, phytoplankton chlorophyll content, and phytoplankton distribution. Data were obtained from Krasnoyarsk Reservoir and the Dnieper reservoirs. When diatoms and pyrrhophytes predominate, the maximum spectral brightness is in the vicinity of 580 nm, but when blue-green algae predominate the maxima are in the vicinity of 550 and 720 nm. -from Authors
