Аннотация: Combined influence of "water of aggregation" and food concentration on the reproductive parameters of Moina macrocopa females was investigated. In all experiments the influence of population density was associated with the effect of "water of aggregation" prepared earlier by keeping dense population (200 ?g/ml) of M. macrocopa. It was shown that life-span of M. macrocopa females in "water of aggregation" was not dependent on food concentration; under conditions of all tested food concentration it was less than in case of control clean water. There was no difference in proportion of males produced in "water of aggregation" and in control though more males were born under conditions of higher food concentration. In general "water of aggregation" causes a specific acceleration of female life history: the life-span and the period between clutches decrease, the amount of neonates in last clutches increases while the chance of male production at the beginning of reproduction period becames greater. The "water of aggregation" could also causes the formation of ephipial eggs instead of the first partenogenetic clutch. It seems that life strategy under conditions of very high mortality associated with "water of aggregation" is aimed to maximum realization of individual capacities in short period of time.

The contents of all organic components are very low, which makes their identification difficult. Аннотация: Изучали водорослевые спектры питания Daphnia longispina O. F. Muller (Crustacea, Cladocera), доминантного вида зоопланктона пруда Бугач, в периоды "цветения" воды. Для этого использован дифференциально-проточный метод в сочетании с флуоресцентным анализом, позволяющим регистрировать популяционный рост. Мелководья Шекснинского и Волжского плесов характеризовались близкими величинами численности (8336'+-'6183 и 5505'+-'8358 кл./мл) и биомассы (8,4'+-'7,0 и 6,5'+-'9,2 мг/м{3}) АПП. В этих плесах отмечены клетки наибольшего объема - 1,15 и 2,23 мкм{3}, численность к-рых была минимальной. Так, в Волжском плесе численность клеток объемом 4,19 мкм{3} составляла лишь 187 кл./мл. В составе АПП повсеместно встречались мелкие одиночные клетки и колонии, включающие от 13 до 1400 клеток. Пространственное распределение и тех, и других по акватории водохранилища было сходным, средняя численность колебалась от 13 349'+-'12 971 на станциях центральной части Главного плеса до 337 036'+-'433 688 кл/мл в приплотинном участке. D. longispina не потребляла вызывающих "цветение" Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs и Microcystis aeruginosa (Kutz.) emend Elenk. При массовом развитии A. flos-aquae дафния исключала микроводоросли из своего рациона, а при вегетации M. aeruginosa избирательно потребляла Cryptomonas erosa Ehr и Cyclotella comta Kutz. Стимулирующего влияния экскреторных и интактных выделений D. longispina на фотосинтетическую активность синезеленых водорослей не обнаружено

Аннотация: The allelopathic effect of population density on gametogenesis induction of Moina macrocopa (Crustacea: Cladocera) was investigated at varying food concentration, photoperiod, and temperature. The presence of the non-trophic effect of population density on gametogenesis induction was demonstrated. The experiments with single females have shown that if the photoperiod, temperature, and food concentration are favorable for parthenogenesis, the crowding water has the effect of stimulating females into changing the reproduction mode. This effect was enhanced by using a higher density of the population to achieve crowding. The change of reproduction mode occurs in the experiments with populations of M. macrocopa with the achievement of food availability favorable for the parthenogenesis of single females. Chemical interactions between animals are the most obvious explanation for the obtained results.

Аннотация: Three levels of chemical communications involved plankton Crustacea are considered: 1) Influence of zooplankton excretion on phytoplankton; 2) Influence of zooplankton excretion on the individuals of the same or other species of the same trophic level; 3) Influence of chemical cues released by predatory zooplankton and fish on herbivorous zooplankton. The data on the influence of excreted cues on some physiological (growth, reproduction, feeding, etc.) and behavioural (vertical and horizontal migrations) characters of planktonic crustaceans are presented. Ecological role and chemistry cues responsible for the interactions of different trophic levels can be different. It is considered that chemical communications in aquatic ecosystems can be provided with: 1) Species-specific cues that strictly influence particular biological functions (communication system of feromone type); 2) Non-specific cues that strictly influence particular functions (system of regulator, that act at the whole ecosystem as the hormonal system of an organism). 3) Non-specific substances with broad (nonspecific) influence-toxic substances of "biocondition substances" according to classification of Novikov and Kharlamova (2000).

Аннотация: The circadian rhythm of grazing of microalgae by a laboratory culture of Ceriodaphnia quadrangula under continuous illumination was studied by continuous registration of chlorophyll fluorescence at the outlet of a flow-through cultivator. A culture of green alga Chlorella vulgaris was used as a feed. The data obtained were treated by the statistical spectral analysis. It was found that animals preliminarily grown under a 12 h light: 12 h dark regime and transferred to constant light showed two maxima in the circadian rhythm of grazing with periods of 0.7 and 1.1 h. Animals preliminarily grown under constant light showed no circadian rhythm of grazing. It was concluded that the circadian rhythm of grazing of C. quadrangula has endogenous nature and can change according to light conditions.

Аннотация: Data on the seasonal changes in vertical heterogeneity of the physical-chemical and biological parameters of the thermally stratified Shira Lake ecosystem (Khakasia, Siberia) in 1996-2000 have been analyzed. The interaction mechanisms involving: (1) The plankton populations in aerobic and anaerobic zones, involving the cycling of carbon and sulphur, (2) the primary production limitation (by light and phosphorus) and inhibition (by light), and (3) the kinetic characteristics of plankton populations have been elucidated. A mathematical model of the vertical structure of the lake's plankton populations, based on the ecosystem description and on vertical turbulent diffusion of the matter, has been constructed. The green alga Dictyosphaerium tetrachotomum (Chlorophyta) and the cyanobacterium Lyngbya contorta (Cyanophyta), which dominated the phytoplankton biomass, were taken as oxygen producers. Arctodiaptomus salinus (a calanoid copepod) has been assumed as the main grazer in Shira Lake as it dominated the zooplankton biomass. Four groups of microorganisms involved in the sulphur cycle formation have been distinguished: sulphur, sulphur purple, sulphur green and SRB. H2S is oxidized to sulphate (only the green sulphur bacteria oxidize it to sulphur), and sulphate is reduced to H2S, forming neither sulphur nor its water-soluble compounds. The role of grazing, light and nutrient limitation, in forming the vertical inhomogeneities, particularly in lowering the depth of the maximal cyanobacterial biomass, has been demonstrated. When the model takes into account both light limitation and nutrient limitation of algal growth by P and consumption of algae by crustaceans: (a) in the scenario where the P is formed only by the cycling and decomposition of autochthonous organic matter, both the green algae and cyanobacteria are eliminated; (b) in the scenario involving an additional P flux in the deep water layers the peak of the cyanobacteria is at a depth of 10 m, and its amplitude is close to the one observed in the lake. The position of the peak remains stable owing to the 'double' limitation mechanism: light 'from above' and P 'from below'. Another mechanism responsible for the deep position of the peak of cyanobacteria was analyzed mathematically based on the model involving the experimentally proven assumption of the growth inhibition by light in the epilimnion and the light limitation in the hypolimnion. The main result is: the peak is positioned stable at its depth and does not change with time. The analytical and numerical calculations made for this positioning mechanism yielded the formulae relating the depth of the maximum of algal biomass, the 'width' of the peak base and the peak amplitude and a number of parameters (algae elimination, turbulent diffusion coefficient, sedimentation rate, light extinction coefficient and light intensity). The theoretical curves for the stratification of chemical and biological parameters have been brought in conformity with field observations, e.g. for the different patterns for the peaks, and the biomass maxima of cyanobacteria, purple and green sulphur bacteria, oxygen, and hydrogen sulphide. The calculations revealed that for an adequate assessment of the parameters for the hydrogen sulphide zone it is necessary to introduce flows of allochthonous organic matter. For the first time, theoretically, based on the form of the sulphur distribution curve, the allochthonous input of organic matter and the inflow of hydrogen sulphide from the bottom have been discriminated. The theoretical limit for the depth up to which the hydrogen-sulphide zone can ascend under the impact of allochthonous organic loading, has been determined.

Аннотация: Spatial distribution of Gammarus lacustris in Lake Shira and growth of young specimens that feed on lake biota were studied. The amphipods have been shown to inhabit the littoral, sublittoral and the upper aphytal zones of the lake on stony-sandy soil and silted sand. The young and adult individuals stay apart. The young live in submerged or semi-submerged vegetation in the littoral, the adults in the sublittoral and upper aphytal zones. Maximum density of amphipods was encountered in the areas influenced by human activity. The feeding experiments revealed that the lake plankton is a more important food source for G. lacustris than any other food species. The specific growth rate measured was 0.039 d-1, with a length increment 0.095 mm d-1.

Аннотация: The change in reproductive mode from parthenogenesis to gametogenesis in Cladocera is controlled by multiple environmental cues. Maternal effects are involved in the control of reproductive switching. In this study, we estimated the readiness of Moina macrocopa females to change reproduction mode under the effect of conspecific chemicals on maternal and offspring generations. The results demonstrated that information about the chemical environment was not transmitted between generations (none of the females produced diapausing eggs in the control medium irrespective of their mothers' environment). Differences in maternal energetic investments were not significant, hence the maternal environment did not affect the fecundity. However, tested animals adapted to the effect of the diapause inducing factor. When offspring of mothers cultured in crowded water were also cultured in crowded water (the constant effect of conspecific chemicals), they switched less readily to gametogenesis than offsprings of mothers cultured in fresh medium.

Аннотация: An individual-based model of cyclic development of Cladocera populations was developed on the basis of experimental data. The model takes into account the following processes describing the development of an individual animal: maturation, transition into other reproductive classes, selection of the reproduction mode (parthenogenetic or gamogenetic), release of parthenogenetic progeny and death. The model assumes that switching from asexual to sexual reproduction is controlled by the concentration of food and metabolic by-products of the animal population. Verification of the model by independent experiments demonstrated that (1) during population growth, metabolic by-products build up in the medium, and (2) the effect of metabolic by-products on gamogenesis induction depends on concentration. The hypothesis that the effect of regulating reproductive switching factors should synchronise the development of population with the change of environmental conditions in order to ensure production of the maximum number of diapausing eggs was tested. Аннотация: We studied fatty acid (FA) composition in samples from bodies and intestinal contents of the littoral amphipod Gammarus lacustris Sars, from the Bugach freshwater reservoir. Simultaneously, samples of seston and bottom sediments were also collected from the reservoir during early August. There were no differences in FA composition of gut contents, seston and sediments of pebbly bottom. Seston was the main food source of Gammarus but some FAs Gammarus got from sediments. The FA composition of G. lacustris and seston from the Bugach freshwater reservoir were compared with those of the animals from the saltwater Lake Shira (Siberia). While FA composition of the two Gammarus populations differed significantly, those of seston were practically similar: the composition of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, 20:5?3, 22:6?3 and 20:4?6, were significantly higher in animals from saline Shira Lake, whereas 16:1 and 16:0 were higher in the freshwater populations of amphipods from the Bugach freshwater reservoir. Taking into account the relevant literature data, we hypothesise that this difference in C16 acid might be a distinguishing characteristic of FA composition of freshwater and saltwater crustaceans.

Аннотация: We studied non-consumptive (non-predatory) mortality of Daphnia and Cyclops vicinus during four sampling seasons. Mortality estimations were based on live/dead sorting using special staining and measurements of sedimentation rates for dead individuals, depended on wind speed. Original equations were used for calculations. The estimated specific non-consumptive mortality never had biologically senseless negative values, which were often obtained on the basis of the other ways of mortality estimations, and was in a good agreement with other components of population dynamics. As found, the non-consumptive mortality was the important, often the determinant component of the zooplankton population dynamics.

Аннотация: The study was done to investigate the content of manmade radionuclides in aquatic organisms of the Yenisei River near the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) and to estimate the exposure dose rates to organisms from various sources. The results of the investigation and calculations suggest that the main source of radioactive contamination of aquatic organisms is the coolant of the third MCC reactor, which is still being released into the Yenisei. Gamma-spectrometric analysis revealed 23 manmade radionuclides in the biomass of aquatic plants. The aquatic animal Phylolimnogammarus viridis and diatoms also contain manmade radionuclides. Among aquatic organisms, the highest dose rate is received by aquatic plants (up to 39 ?Gy/day). For most aquatic organisms under study, the dose received from the technogenic irradiation is an order of magnitude higher than the dose received from natural irradiation. The water moss (Fontinalis antipyretica) features the highest capacity to accumulate manmade radionuclides; hence, it accumulates the largest technogenic exposure dose among the study aquatic organisms.
