Аннотация: Continuous cultivation of water invertebrates facilitates the study of their biological characteristics and productivity and hence contributes to creation of artifical ecological systems. When applying the technique, suspended nutrients are being passed through the cultivator and culture is outflowing continuously, with the volume inside the vessel being constant. The objective of the study is to examine the effect of a range conditions of cultivating on population growth rate.

Аннотация: For analytical purposes bioluminescence can be used in three main ways: 1. luminescence measurement of bioluminescent system components isolated in vitro; 2. determination of luminous organisms' reaction to the in vivo test-action; 3. measurement of bioluminescence in marine ecological systems. The majority of the reports of this Symposium are dealing with the first two topics. The aim of our presentation is to draw attention to the third one. The possibilities of bioluminescent analysis are wider than its traditional scheme of applications in the laboratory, when the emitting system is withdrawn from a native source and is placed in a cuvette of the light measuring device. The reverse scheme is also possible, i.e. the device can be introduced into light emitting system such as a marine biocenosis--the community of the sea inhabitants--where we obtain a highly sensitive and rapid means of gaining the information on the vital activity of marine ecosystems, i.e. their spatial structure, rhythms, man's influence upon them, etc. The present communication will consider the possibilities of this form of bioluminescent analysis.

Аннотация: The chromatographic conditions presented allowed the separation of the nitrophenacyl derivatives of standards of eleven free fatty acids (FFA) using a portable high-performance chromatograph, suitable for use aboard a research vessel. A statistically significant linear correlation between UV absorbance and amount of the analytes injected was obtained. The method was tested on FFA from algae cultural media. The method can be used for the ecological monitoring of natural waters.

Аннотация: Six basic phase portraits differing in character and in the number of their equilibrium behaviour regimes were suggested in the classification of forest insect population dynamics. The portraits graphically illustrate six types of dynamic behavior of numbers of the system 'phytophage-entomophage': two types of stable equilibrium dynamics (stationary and oscillatory) and four types corresponding to outbreaks of mass reproduction - fixed, permanent, reversive and true outbreaks, respectively. In this paper we consider the single parameter model, with its parametric domains realizing a wide spectrum of phase dynamics, both basic and transitional. The changes in the phase portraits are accompanied by the bifurcations in the model. The results of these analyses are in agreement with the 'stability principle of mobile ecological systems' and may supply its parameter substantiation at the model level.

Аннотация: The chemical composition of water conditioned by colonies of Moina macrocopa and involved in the regulation of their life cycle was analyzed in comparison with water samples from natural water bodies. Dechlorinated tap water was used as the control medium. The results showed that metabolism of crustaceans leads to an increase in the concentrations of phosphorus and nitrogen in all forms, the appearance of protein and carbohydrate fractions, and changes in the composition of lipid fractions in the water conditioned by their colonies. The contents of all organic components are very low, which makes their identification difficult. Concentrations of substances identified in the conditioned water do not exceed those occurring in nature. В© 2000 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The process of biotic turnover in a closed ecological system (CES) with an external energy flow was analyzed by mathematical modeling of the biotic cycle formation. The formation of hierarchical structure in model CESs is governed by energy criteria. Energy flow through the ecosystem increases when a predator is introduced into a "producer-reducer" system at steady state. Analysis of the model shows that under certain conditions the presence of the primary predator with its high mineralization ability accelerates the biotic turnover measured by primary production. We, therefore, conclude that for every system it is possible to find a suitable predator able to provide the system with a higher biotic turnover rate and energy consumption. В© 2001 COSPAR. Аннотация: Closed Artificial ecosystems (CAES) have good prospects for wide use as new means for quantitative studies of different types of both natural ecosystems and man-made ones. The paper deals with the discussion of three points of CAES applications. The first one is of importance for theoretical ecology development and is connected with bringing together В«holisticВ» and В«merologicalВ» approaches in ecosystems studies. Using CAES, we can combine both approaches, taking into account the biotic turnover of limiting substrates which few in number even for complicated natural ecosystems. The second CAES use concerns the development of В«ecosystems healthВ» concept and application of a key-factor-approach for the indication and measurement of healthy unhealthy state and functioning of ecosystems or their links. The third use is more of an applied nature, oriented to the intensification of bioremediation or biodepollution processes in different types of ecosystems, including the global biosphere. Paramecium bursaria -- endosymbiosis -- matter exchange cycle
Аннотация: A hypothesis is considered that the establishment and maintenance of mass exchange processes in the Paramecium bursaria symbiotic complex (infusorian-alga) depends on the presence of the third component-bacteria-whose role is underestimated but essential for completing the exchange cycle. The role of this component in the symbiotic cycle of Paramecium bursaria is possible to reveal using special bactericidal preparations specifically inhibiting the bacteria involved in the metabolic cycle but having no effect on the functions of the host cell and the zoochlorella population. Experiments with various preparations of this type were performed, and the response to treatment was estimated from growth rates of the symbiotic complex and its components. This allowed identification of an antibiotic (rifampicin) that had no adverse influence on free-living zoochlorella and chlorella-free paramecia (the basic components of the symbiotic cycle) but drastically inhibited the growth of the P. bursaria symbiotic complex, which could be interpreted as evidence in favor of the hypothesis concerning the existence of the third symbiotic component.

Аннотация: Using 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses we investigated the bacterial diversity of winter bacterioplankton of two eutrophic Siberian reservoirs. These reservoirs show similarity in phytoplankton community composition in spring and autumn but tend to differ in summer in exhibiting cyanobacterial bloom. Forty-eight unique partial 16S RNA gene sequences retrieved from two libraries were mostly affiliated with the class Actinobacteria, ? subdivision of the class Proteobacteria, and the phylum Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides. The clone library of the pond exhibiting summer cyanobacterial bloom showed more diversity in sequence composition. A significant number of bacterial 16S rRNA gene clones were closely related to freshwater bacteria previously found in different aquatic ecosystems. This finding confirms the assumption that some bacterial clades are globally distributed.

The results confirmed the existence of two ecophysiological forms of St. hantzschii and provided evidence that both forms are typically autotrophic and can efficiently use low-intensity PhAR for photosynthesis.

Аннотация: Studies were conducted to investigate the antibiotic resistance of freshwater, halophile and moderate halotolerant bacteria isolated from the nearshore part of Shira lake, which is affected by the activity of a health resort, and from the central part of the lake in the summer (June to August) of 1999. It has been shown that the allochthonous microflora, which is brought into the lake with the resort effluent in mid-summer, is the anthropogenic factor contributing to an increase in the number of freshwater bacteria that feature multiple antibiotic resistance in the central part of the lake. It has been found that resistance to ampicillin of freshwater and halophile heterotrophic bacteria is related to the increase in the biomass of blue-green and green algae in the central part of Shira lake between mid-July and the end of August. A mathematical model has been constructed to describe the dynamics of the antibiotic resistance of heterotrophic bacteria in the close-to-resort and the central parts of Shira lake under natural and anthropogenic impacts.
