Аннотация: The study of the composition of fatty acid markers of tadpoles of cohabiting amphibian species for the first time revealed differences in their diets: the moor frog Rana arvalis prefers bacteria not associated with plant detritus, whereas the diet of the common spadefoot Pelobates fuscus is based on cyanobacteria, green algae, diatoms, and possibly higher plants. Major differences in the fatty acid composition are determined by the difference in the percentage of eicosapentaenoic and myristic acids.

Аннотация: To create reliable Closed Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS) it is necessary to have models which can predict CELSS dynamic with good accuracy. However it was shown that conventional ecological models cannot describe CELSS correctly if it is closed by more than one element. This problem can be solved by means more complex models than conventional ones - so called flexible metabolism models. However it is possible that CELSS also can be described correctly in "semi-conventional" framework - when only one trophic level is described by flexible metabolism model. Another problem in CELSS modeling is existence of different and incompatible hypotheses about relationships between plants growth rate and amounts of nutrients (functional responses). Difficulty of testing these hypotheses is associated with multi-nutrient dependency of growth rate and comprehensive experimental studies are expensive and time-consuming. This work is devoted to testing the hypothesis that "semi-conventional" approach is enough to describe CELSS, and to planning the discrimination experiment on selecting correct type of the plant's functional response. To do that three different models of plants (one flexible and two conventional) were investigated both in the scope of CELSS model, and in hemostat model. Numerical simulations show that each of the models has typical patterns which can be determined in experiment with real plants. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

amphibiotic insect emergence -- Chironomidae -- fatty acids -- life stages -- saline lake -- Chironomidae -- Glyptotendipes barbipes -- Hexapoda
Аннотация: This paper studies the fatty acid (FA) composition and content of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the biomass of larvae and adults of chironomids from the saline Shira Lake. Species of different genera significantly differ in their larvae FA composition and essential PUFA content, and they also occupy different ecological niches: Chironomus species with a low PUFA content (0.2–0.3 mg g–1 of wet weight) inhabit a deepwater zone of the lake, while Glyptotendipes barbipes species that were richer in PUFA (2.3 mg g–1 of wet weight) dwell in the littoral of the lake. The biochemical differences are likely related to different feeding spectra of these taxa and can also be explained by the phylogenetic factor. A comparison does not find differences in the PUFA content in larvae and adults in the samples of the same species G. barbipes; i.e., we do not confirm the data on an increase in the content of these acids during the metamorphosis of chironomids. Thus, the data on the PUFA content in larvae can be used in calculations of PUFA fluxes through chironomid emergence from water bodies; however, the taxonomic affiliation of the emerged chironomids should be taken into consideration due to the high variability in the PUFA content in Chironomidae species. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Fatty acid composition of fish species with different feeding habits from an Arctic Lake / M. I. Gladyshev [et al.] // Doklad. Biochem. Biophys. - 2017. - Vol. 474, Is. 1. - P220-223, DOI 10.1134/S1607672917030164 . - ISSN 1607-6729
Аннотация: We compared the composition and content of fatty acids (FAs) in fish with different feeding habits (sardine (least) cisco Coregonus sardinella, goggle-eyed charr (pucheglazka) form of Salvelinus alpinus complex, humpback whitefish Coregonus pidschian, broad whitefish Coregonus nasus, boganid charr Salvelinus boganidae, and northern pike Esox lucius from an Arctic Lake. Feeding habits of the studied fish (planktivore, benthivore, or piscivore) significantly affected the composition of biomarker fatty acids and the ratio of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen in their biomass. The hypothesis on a higher content of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in the fish of higher trophic level (piscivores) when compared within the same taxonomic group (order Salmoniformes) was confirmed. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The seasonal dynamics of feeding spectra and diet of Arctic graying in a stretch of the middle reaches of the Yenisei River (from the dam of the Krasnoyarsk HPP to the mouth of the Kan River) was studied in 2009–2013. Its connection with the food-supply state and fish growth has been traced. It has been shown that the intensity of fish feeding is relatively stable throughout the year, despite significant fluctuations in zoobenthos biomass. The contribution of groups dominating in diet (amphipods and larvae of caddisflies) changes depending on the month. Amphipods prevail in the diet of fish during the period from June to October and caddisflies prevail in the winter and spring months. Among caddisflies, selective feeding on a small species, Apatania crymophila, has been revealed. The change of the primary diet component during the summer period corresponds to a sharp increase in the coefficients of relative condition factors with a peak in August–September. It has been assumed that changes in the ratio of weight and linear sizes of fish are associated not only with an increase in the water temperature, but also with the grayling switching to the consumption of amphipods with a higher nutrition value. © 2017, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Degradable polyhydroxyalkanoates -- PHA -- Soil -- PHA-degrading -- microorganisms
Аннотация: The study addresses degradation of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) with different chemical compositions-the polymer of 3-hydroxybutyric acid [P(3HB)] and copolymers of P(3HB) with 3-hydroxyvalerate [P(3HB/3HV)], 4-hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB/4HB)], and 3-hydroxyhexanoate [P(3HB/3HHx)] (10-12 mol%)-in the agro-transformed field soil of the temperate zone. Based on their degradation rates at 21 and 28 A degrees C, polymers can be ranked as follows: P(3HB/4HB) > P(3HB/3HHx) > P(3HB/3HV) > P(3HB). The microbial community on the surface of the polymers differs from the microbial community of the soil with PHA specimens in the composition and percentages of species. Thirty-five isolates of bacteria of 16 genera were identified as PHA degraders by the clear zone technique, and each of the PHA had both specific and common degraders. P(3HB) was degraded by bacteria of the genera Mitsuaria, Chitinophaga, and Acidovorax, which were not among the degraders of the three other PHA types. Roseateles depolymerans, Streptomyces gardneri, and Cupriavidus sp. were specific degraders of P(3HB/4HB). Roseomonas massiliae and Delftia acidovorans degraded P(3HB/3HV), and Pseudoxanthomonas sp., Pseudomonas fluorescens, Ensifer adhaerens, and Bacillus pumilus were specific P(3HB/3HHx) degraders. All four PHA types were degraded by Streptomyces.

Аннотация: Closed ecological systems are of two-fold interest - as models of the Earth's biosphere explorable in experiments and as a facility for long-term autonomous human life support beyond the Earth. Theoretical analysis and experimental implementation of highly closed manned systems has been the subject of studies at the Institute of Biophysics (Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch) for many years. BIOS systems of increasing complexity with complete regeneration of atmosphere, water and partially food have been realized. In BIOS-3 experiments the system inhabited by 2-3 researchers for 4-6 months maintained its metabolic equilibrium without any negative physiological effect on the crew, which proves its sustainable condition. Specific for BIOS-3 is internal control by the people inhabiting the system. So, BIOS-3 is the first experimental implementation of V.l. Vernadsky's idea about the noosphere - habitable Biosphere controlled by human intelligence. Contrary to predictions of many environmentalists the closedness of the ecosystem is a factor that does not reduce, but increases its sustainability and makes its use for reliable life support outside the Earth realistic. The system is sustainable owing to permanent feedback between the monitoring of few key parameters of the system and automatic corrective actions on them. Main object of control is photo-biosynthesis regenerating parameters of human habitat disturbed by his vital activities. This principle has been realized in BIOS system and proved its reliability in long-term experiments. A new challenge is specified-optimal increase of trophic closedness of the system by reproduction within it essential proteins (peptides and amino acids), lipids, vitamins and other essential compounds. Alternative lines of attack on this problem by state-of-the-art biotechnological methods, GMO including, are under analysis. Reduced BIOS version - without complete closure - can be a breakthrough instrument to improve the quality of life of people living under extreme conditions on the Earth - in polar latitudes (Arctic, Antarctic), in deserts, in high mountains.

Аннотация: This paper is an introduction to a special issue of the journal. A brief historical delineation of the question of studying interfaces between adjacent ecosystems (ecotones) is presented. High biodiversity of ecotones and their vulnerability to natural and anthropogenic impacts, including invasions of alien species, are noted. It is supposed that there is no contradiction between the ecotone and river continuum concepts. The important ecological role of amphibiotic animals and plants in interactions and functioning of the adjacent ecosystems is emphasized. The issue of studying the quantitative parameters of fluxes of matter and energy between ecosystems in conjunction with their qualitative parameters (chemical elemental and biochemical compositions) is considered in the present paper. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: A sealed vegetation chamber was designed and constructed for physical simulation of climate conditions in the Subarctic zone during the spring–summer time. The small laboratory tundra-simulating ecosystem (TSE) was created for comparative evaluation of the rates of soil respiration and of the total balance of carbon fluxes in tundra ecosystems. The test experiment was performed to study the TSE response to a temperature rise in air and soil by 2°C in terms of the intensity of the СО2 flux. It was shown that this increase in temperature would cause a pronounced shift in the balance of СО2 production and utilization in the ecosystem from near-zero values to a stable generation of 24 ?mol/h of CO2 per 1 kg of dry biomass. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: Based on 31-year field study of the abundance and biomass of 18 species of odonates in the Barabinsk Forest–Steppe (Western Siberia, Russia), we quantified the contribution of odonates to the export of aquatic productivity to surrounding terrestrial landscape. Emergence varied from 0.8 to 4.9 g of wet biomass per m2 of land area per year. Average export of organic carbon was estimated to be 0.30 g·m? 2·year? 1, which is comparable with the average production of herbivorous terrestrial insects in temperate grasslands. Moreover, in contrast to terrestrial insects, emerging odonates contained high quantities of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), namely eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA), which are known to be essential for many terrestrial animals, especially for birds. The export of EPA + DHA by odonates was found to be 1.92–11.76 mg·m? 2·year? 1, which is equal to an average general estimation of the export of HUFA by emerging aquatic insects. Therefore, odonates appeared to be a quantitatively and qualitatively important conduit of aquatic productivity to forest-steppe ecosystem. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Аннотация: The ecological second-order phase transition model has been used to describe height-dependent changes in the species composition of mountain forest ecosystems. Forest inventory data on the distribution of various tree species in the Sayan Mountains (south Middle Siberia) are in good agreement with the model proposed in this study. The model was used to estimate critical heights for different altitudinal belts of vegetation, determine the boundaries and extents of ecotones between different vegetation belts, and reveal differences in the ecotone boundaries between the north- and south-facing transects. An additional model is proposed to describe ecotone boundary shifts caused by climate change. © 2016 by the authors.

Аннотация: The present study describes construction and investigation of experimental formulations of ammonium nitrate embedded in a matrix of degradable natural polymer poly-3-hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] and P(3HB) blended with wood flour shaped as tablets, some of them coated with P(3HB). Kinetics of ammonium release into soil as dependent on the composition of the polymer matrix was investigated in laboratory experiments. The rates of fertilizer release from formulations coated with a biopolymer layer were considerably (two months or longer) slower than the rates of fertilizer release from uncoated formulations, while release from polymer and composite (polymer/wood flour) formulations occurred with comparable rates. The use of the experimental formulations in laboratory ecosystems with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was more effective than application of free ammonium nitrate. The advantage of the slow-release fertilizer formulations is that they are buried in soil together with the seeds, and the fertilizer remains effective over the first three months of plant growth. The use of such slow-release formulations will reduce the amounts of chemicals released into the environment, which will curb their accumulation in food chains of ecosystems and mitigate their adverse effects on the biosphere. © 2017 American Chemical Society.

Аннотация: We studied species composition, density, biomass and production of larvae of the family Ceratopogonidae in two saline rivers (Volgograd region, Russia). Ceratopoponids make up an important part of macroinvertebrate community in these rivers. Average monthly production (dry weight) of ceratopogonid larvae in the rivers was 3.5-4.8 g m -2 month -1 in May and ?0.9 g m -2 month -1 in August. For the first time, feeding spectra of ceratopogonid larvae, Palpomyia schmidti Goetghebuer, 1934, was studied using fatty acid analyses. The larvae of P. schmidti appeared to selectively consume diatoms and other algae and to avoid bacteria and decomposed dead organic matter (detritus) of low nutritive quality. © CSIRO.

Аннотация: The seasonal dynamics of the vertical structure of small saline Lake Uchum, located in the steppe arid zone of the south of Siberia (Krasnoyarsk krai), has been studied in detail for the first time. This lake is a meromictic water body. We have revealed a heterogeneous vertical distribution of plankton organisms and a dense population of purple sulfuric bacteria in the redox zone. The taxonomic composition and seasonal dynamics of phyto- and zooplankton are described. Presumably, the meromixis of Lake Uchum is due to the inflow of fresh water to the surface of the saline water body during the rise of its level in the early 20th century, similarly to lakes Shira and Shunet located nearby. The processes of salt displacement into the solution during the formation of ice, as well as the precipitation of salts in the winter, also contribute to the maintenance of permanent stratification. The information on the current state of the lake can be useful for reconstructing the climate by bottom sediments, as well as for creating a model of water quality and investigating the therapeutic properties of lake mud.

Аннотация: A critical analysis of literature data on the distribution, morphology, and phylogeography of the Arctic lamprey (Lethenteron camtschaticum) and five species of marine and anadromous fish such as navaga (Eleginus navaga), pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax dentex), Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), and pond smelt (Hypomesus olidus) has been performed. The results show that all these species have colonized Northern European seas, distributing along the Arctic coastline of Eurasia after the glacier retreat. The reasons that the dispersal of these species in the Atlantic Ocean may be impeded (preference for a cold environment, competition, and decrease of the evolutionary potential) are discussed.

Аннотация: We have analyzed the partial sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene along with the amino acid sequences of cytochrome oxidase subunit I, encoded by this gene region, in representatives of 11 genera of salmonoid fish. For amino acid sequences, two alternative networks are constructed with outgroups represented by either Esocoidei or Osmeroidei as the supposed ancestral groups. This way, Osmeroidei appear to be closer to the salmonoid fish than Esocoidei, and their presence in the network as an outgroup explains the available data on the morphology and karyology of salmonoids much better. A number of the results of this study are fundamentally new. In particular, the slowing down of the molecular evolution of the grayling (Thymallidae) is shown. We conclude that the charr (Salvelinus) is one of the modern genera of salmonoids closest to their ancestor. The hypothesis of the phylogenetic proximity of the genera Brachymystax, Hucho, and Salmo has been confirmed. We also discuss the possibility that it is namely the changes in the amino acid sequence of cytochrome oxidase subunit I that lead to postzygotic reproductive isolation between taxa.

Аннотация: The results of a study of the specific features of morphological and genetic polymorphism of the population of the anadromous White Sea common whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) from the Keret' River are presented. As assessed by its morphological features, the whitefish population of the Keret' is homogenous. A comparison of the Keret' whitefish with whitefish populations of both Europe and Siberia revealed clear differences. These differences relate first and foremost to the fish locomotion and orientation in space: body depth, length and positions of fins, and interorbital width. The characteristics of skull features (craniological analysis) of the White Sea whitefish are presented for the first time. The results of an analysis of the polymorphism of the ND1 fragment of the mitochondrial DNA confirmed an earlier suggestion about the mixed origin of the Keret' River whitefish: the descendants of three different phylogenetic lineages were revealed in the population.

A narrowing of the phenotypic diversity range after large rearrangements of the karyotype in salmonidae: The relationship between saltational genome rearrangements and gradual adaptive evolution / A. A. Makhrov // Genes. - 2017. - Vol. 8, Is. 11, DOI 10.3390/genes8110297 . - ISSN 2073-4425

Аннотация: The problem of how a gradual development of ecological and morphological adaptations combines with large genome rearrangements, which have been found to occur in the phylogeny of many groups of organisms, is a matter of discussion in the literature. The objective of this work was to study the problem with the example of salmonids, whose evolution included at least six events of multiple chromosome fusions. Large karyotype rearrangements are associated with a decrease in ecological and morphological diversity in salmonids. In the above example, genome rearrangements seem to distort the function of the genetic systems that are responsible for the occurrence of certain ecological forms in salmonids. © 2017 by the authors; Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.
