The Yenisei River is contaminated with artificial radionuclides due to the weapons-grade plutonium production at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) at Zheleznogorsk (Russia) for more than 50 years. The last reactor plant at the MCC was shut down in 2010. The research presents the data on accumulation of artificial radionuclides in wild fish (pike, Esox lucius; grayling, Thymallus arcticus; and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus baicalensis) inhabiting the radioactively contaminated part of the Yenisei River between 2005 and 2014. Among artificial radionuclides that were detected in fish muscles when the last nuclear reactor plant was operating (32P, 60Co, 65Zn, 137Cs), only 137Cs was recorded four years after the shutdown of the nuclear power plant at the MCC. The concentrations of 137Cs in fish muscles were considerably below the sanitary norms for this radionuclide in the Russian Federation. Piscivorous fish species accumulated higher concentration of 137Cs in their muscles than non-predatory species. Concentration of 137Cs in fish fauna of the Yenisei River did not decrease after the shutdown of the last nuclear power plant at the MCC, while the concentration of radionuclides with induced activity decreased considerably. This can be explained by the constant inflow of 137Cs into the Yenisei River due to discharges from the radiochemical plant at the MCC and the deposits of 137Cs in the bottom sediments. We can expect that the concentration of 137Cs in fish muscles will not decrease in the next few decades.

The aim of the research was a comparative evaluation of the intensity of uranium-238 accumulation in the biomass of aquatic organisms, occupying different trophic levels in the ecosystem of the Yenisei river. Previously, uranium-238 at concentrations higher than the background ones was detected in water and sediment samples of the Yenisei River collected close to the discharge site of one of the Rosatom facilities (the Mining-and-Chemical Combine). However, radioecological studies of the Yenisei River ecosystem have not focused on uranium isotopes in aquatic organisms so far. The toxic effects of uranium on living organisms are known to be based on its both radioactive and chemical properties. We conducted a study on accumulation of uranium-238 in aquatic organisms at different trophic levels in the Yenisei River ecosystem between 2010 and 2013. We collected samples of aquatic moss (Fointinalis antipyretica), zoobenthos (Philolimnogammarus viridis and Ph. cyaneus), arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus), and pike (Esox lucius) from the Yenisei region at a distance of 85-90 km downstream of Krasnoyarsk (5-10 km downstream of the radioactive discharge of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine). Data on samples are shown in Table 1. We determined uranium concentration in the samples of aquatic organisms by neutron activation analysis, in water - by ICP-MS (Table 2). The study shows that uranium can be effectively concentrated from water and accumulate in the biomass of all aquatic organisms used in experiments. The highest uranium concentration factors (CFs) were obtained for aquatic moss, and they were several times higher than the uranium CFs for zoobenthos and fish muscles. Based on the uranium concentration from water, all aquatic organisms of the Yenisei River used in this study can be ranked as follows: aquatic moss > gammarids > grayling = pike. No statistically significant difference has been found between uranium accumulation by fish of different trophic levels (Arctic grayling and pike). The uranium CFs obtained in this study is comparable with the literature data on the CFs of artificial radionuclides for aquatic moss and fish of the Yenisei River

zooplankton -- Lake Pyasino -- species composition -- abundance -- biomass -- production -- fish productivity -- oil spills -- water quality
Аннотация: At the beginning of August, 2 months after 20 000 t of diesel fuel spilled into the Bezymyanny Stream (which took it out to the Daldykan and Ambarnaya rivers), the large Norilsk expedition of the Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, sampled net zooplankton at 13 stations located in both sections of these rivers and Lake Pyasino with the Pyasina River outflowing from it. A comparative analysis of the species composition, abundance, biomass, and saprobity index of zooplankton at these stations has been carried out. The productions of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton and potential production of planktivorous fish in Lake Pyasino have been calculated. Based on the state of zooplankton, a gradual improvement in water quality has been observed from river areas exposed to the oil products to the northern part of the lake and the River Pyasina outflow. The low abundance and biomass of zooplankton in the lake (43 800 +/- 17 550 ind./m(3), 112.8 +/- 26.2 mg/m(3), on average) due to the dominance of rotifers (Ploesoma truncatum (Levander), Bipalpus hudsoni (Imhof), and Conochilus unicornis Rousselet) resulted in low values of zooplankton production and the potential production of planktivorous fish (0.85 kg/ha per season).

CRUDE-OIL SPILL
Кл.слова (ненормированные):
zoobenthos -- species composition -- abundance -- biomass -- production -- fish -- productivity -- oil spills -- water quality
Аннотация: The species composition and quantitative characteristics of the zoobenthos in Lake Pyasino and rivers flowing into it after a diesel spill have been analyzed. The production of zoobenthos and potential production of benthivorous fish in Lake Pyasino have been calculated. A small number of zoobenthos species and low values of abundance and biomass are revealed. In the Bezymyanny Stream, the mouth of the Daldykan River, and the Ambarnaya River, oligochaetes Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparede and Tubifex tubifex (O. F. Muller) dominate in the zoobenthos abundance and biomass. In Lake Pyasino and the Pyasina River outflow, larvae of caddis flies, chironomids, stoneflies, and amphipods prevail. In the area of the deepwater silted station of Lake Pyasino, oligochaetes L.hoffmeisteri develop, the proportion of which in the benthic fauna at this station (40 and 79% of the total biomass and abundance, respectively) is maximal. The amphipod Monoporeia affinis (Lindstrom) dominates in terms of biomass at this station. A decrease in the chironomid diversity, an increase in the proportion of polysaprobic oligochaetes, and lower values of the Shannon index in Lake Pyasino in 2020 when compared to 1992 are found. The low abundance (2181 +/- 2048 ind./m(2)) and biomass (2.01 +/- 1.85 g/m(2)) of zoobenthos in the lake results in low values of zoobenthos production and the potential production of benthivorous fish (3 kg/ha per season). Based on the state of zoobenthos, an improvement in water quality has been observed from river sections exposed to the oil spill to the lake and the source of the River Pyasina.

Аннотация: Triploid fish has become an important item of commercial aquaculture, but data on its fatty acid (FA) composition are still controversial, especially regarding essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA). We studied FA composition and content of diploid and triploid pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, reared in aquaculture in a bay of the White Sea (Russia). FA composition, measured as percentages of total FA of triploids and immature diploid females significantly differed from that of mature diploid fish. Specifically, mature diploids had higher percentage of EPA and DHA in their muscle tissue (filets) compared to that of triploids and immature diploid females. Nevertheless, the contents of EPA and DHA per mass of the filets in diploid and triploid specimens were similar. Thus, no special efforts are needed to improve EPA and DHA contents in filets of triploids. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

    Transfer of americium-241 from food and water to organs and tissues of the crucian carp * / T. Zotina [et al.] // Radioprotection. - 2011. - Vol. 46, Is. 6 SUPPL. - S69-S73, DOI 10.1051/radiopro/20116648s . - ISSN 0033-8451
Аннотация: The transfer of transuranium element americium-241 (241Am) from food and water to organs and tissues of freshwater fish (Carassius auratus gibelio, crucian carp) has been investigated in laboratory experiments. The fishes were fed with homogenized biomass of submerged macrophytes labeled with 241Am, through catheter. For the first two days after force-feeding, fishes excreted up to 80% of ingested americium, for four days - 98%. 241Am was registered in internal organs and tissues that had no direct contact with americium (liver, bones, muscles) as early as two days after the feeding and after eight days, when the digestive tract was depurated. Among internal organs, the highest activity concentration was recorded in the liver (up to 427 Bq/kg). Activity concentration in bones (19-31 Bq/kg) was several times higher than in muscles, indicating the affinity of americium to bone tissue. Assimilation of 241Am in organs and tissues of crucian carp from water occurred mainly via the digestive tract too. В© 2011 EDP Sciences.

Аннотация: We investigated time-dependent trends of artificial radionuclides in aquatic moss, zoobenthos (amphipods and caddisfly larvae), and three abundant wild fish species (Northern pike, Arctic grayling, and Siberian dace) inhabiting the Yenisei River in the vicinity of the radioactive discharge site in 2007–2015, in a period before and after the shutdown of the last nuclear reactor plant at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC), which occurred in 2010. From our research, we learned that concentrations of short-lived radionuclides, whose discharges to the Yenisei either stopped or declined after the shutdown of the reactor plant at the MCC (24Na, 46Sc,51Cr, 54Mn, 58Co, 59Fe, 60Co, 65Zn, 103Ru, 141,144Ce, 152,154Eu, 239Np), decreased in biota samples as well. The ecological half-life (EHL) of 65Zn (0.4–0.7 y) was similar to the physical half-life of this isotope, the EHLs of 60Co (1.2–2.1 y) and 152Eu (1.8 y) were shorter than the physical half-lives of these isotopes. Concentration of 137Cs did not decrease significantly in biota of the Yenisei after the shutdown of the last reactor plant because the discharges of this radionuclide to the Yenisei continued at the same level. On a longer-term scale (since 1973 and since 1991), concentration of 137Cs in fish muscle had significantly decreased, following the decrease in annual discharges of this radionuclide to the Yenisei, and the EHL of 137Cs was estimated as 6.5–12.8 y. Statistically significant correlation with annual discharges of 137Cs was revealed for the concentration of this radionuclide in grayling (whole bodies and muscle); dace (muscle), and amphipods. Despite their ability to accumulate high concentrations of 137Cs, aquatic moss and caddisfly larvae (analyzed together with their stony casings) were not sensitive to interannual fluctuations in the releases of this radionuclide to the Yenisei. Among the analyzed fish species of the Yenisei, the highest activity concentration of 137Cs was revealed in pike (body and muscle), indicating biomagnification of this radionuclide in the top level of the trophic chain. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Аннотация: The vertical distribution and abundance of Gammarus lacustris in the pelagic zone of two fishless meromictic lakes, L. Shira and L. Shunet, in Southern Siberia (Russia), was studied with the underwater video recording system and using vertical hauls. In both lakes, during summer stratification, Gammarus was distributed non-homogenously, with a stable peak in the metalimnion. The average depth of Gammarus population in the pelagic zone was significantly correlated with the depth of the thermocline. Gammarus abundances obtained using vertical plankton hauls with net were quite comparable with those obtained from video records. The peak abundance of Gammarus in the pelagic zone of the lakes observed with underwater video amounted up to 400 individuals m-2, while the peak animal densities in the metalimnion reached 50 ind. m-3. The data are compared with previously published abundances of Gammarus in the littoral of Lake Shira. Both littoral and pelagic can be equally important habitats for amphipods in meromictic lakes. The absence of fish in the pelagic zone, high oxygen concentration, low water temperature, increased seston concentration, elevated water density in the metalimnion and the anoxic hypolimnion can be the most probable combination of factors that are responsible for the peak of Gammarus in the metalimnion of these lakes. Аннотация: Genetic diversity and colonization routes of noble salmons were studied using a partial nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrialCOIgene. The brown troutS. trutta, which is the most ancient species of the genus, was concluded to originate from the modern southeastern Pontic-Caspian area, which is currently inhabited by members of the subspeciesS. trutta oxianus. Migrating westward while the Paratethys was in existence (5-34 million years ago), species of the genus colonized ancient water bodies in the modern Mediterranean basin and formed many isolated populations that survived desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea (5-6 million years ago). The Strait of Gibraltar mediated brown trout migrations to Northern Europe; the subspeciesS. trutta truttabelongs to a relatively young phylogenetic lineage of the species. A separate brown trout lineage, currently classified as the subspeciesS. trutta labrax, formed most likely in the area of the modern Danube basin, which was a relatively separate part of the Paratethys and was sometimes isolated as the Pannonian Lake. A highly divergent phylogenetic lineage of Atlantic salmon (S. salar) haplotypes originates from a haplotype of the brown trout that inhabited the area of the modern Strait of Gibraltar.

Аннотация: In cold smoked species of genus Coregonus, identified by molecular genetic analysis, contents of fatty acids and heavy metals and arsenic were measured. The highest content of sum of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids of omega-3 family (LC-PUFA), namely eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) fatty acids, 6.53 +/- 0.78 mg g(-1) wet weight, was characteristic of tugun Coregonus tugun. This is the first quantitative estimation (mg LC-PUFA per g of product) of the nutritive value of smoked fish. Thus, to obtain a daily personal doze of EPA + DHA of 1 g, recommended for prevention of cardiovascular diseases, one needs to consume 153 g of the smoked tugun. Metals contents did not exceed standards for fish meat except Pb in least cisco Coregonus sardinella. Accordingly, values of hazard quotients, which estimate benefit-risk ratio of fish intake, indicate that most of the smoked fish species are safe product for human nutrition, except least cisco regarding Pb content.

eicosapentaenoic acid -- docosahexaenoic acid -- fish oil -- fish meal
Аннотация: The review considers probable ways to overcome the deficiency of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in the human diet through the rational development of aquaculture. Currently, aquaculture is not a producer, but a consumer of polyunsaturated fatty acids, since it is based on feed, the main components of which are fishmeal and fish oil obtained from commercial catches. It is proposed to transform farmed fish from a consumer to producer of these polyunsaturated fatty acids. The source of production of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in aquaculture can be their synthesis by fish from short-chain alpha-linolenic acid contained in the oil of terrestrial agricultural plants. Calculations of the threshold value of the content of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids in feed for salmon fish (Salmonidae) with partial replacement of fish oil with vegetable oil are presented. Another possible way to transform aquaculture into a producer of polyunsaturated fatty acids is to partially replace fishmeal in feed with flour from terrestrial invertebrates. Some species of insects and worms that are promising for aquaculture as objects for the production of feed meal are considered.

Аннотация: We studied non-consumptive (non-predatory) mortality of Daphnia and Cyclops vicinus during four sampling seasons. Mortality estimations were based on live/dead sorting using special staining and measurements of sedimentation rates for dead individuals, depended on wind speed. Original equations were used for calculations. The estimated specific non-consumptive mortality never had biologically senseless negative values, which were often obtained on the basis of the other ways of mortality estimations, and was in a good agreement with other components of population dynamics. As found, the non-consumptive mortality was the important, often the determinant component of the zooplankton population dynamics.

Аннотация: We studied four-link food chain, periphytic microalgae and water moss (producers), trichopteran larvae (consumers I), gammarids (omnivorous - consumers II) and Siberian grayling (consumers III) at a littoral site of the Yenisei River on the basis of three years monthly sampling. Analysis of bulk carbon stable isotopes and compound specific isotope analysis of fatty acids (FA) were done. As found, there was a gradual depletion in 13C contents of fatty acids, including essential FA upward the food chain. In all the trophic levels a parabolic dependence of ? 13C values of fatty acids on their degree of unsaturation/chain length occurred, with 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 in its lowest point. The pattern in the ? 13C differences between individual fatty acids was quite similar to that reported in literature for marine pelagic food webs. Hypotheses on isotope fractionation were suggested to explain the findings. В© 2012 Gladyshev et al.

Аннотация: The results of a study of the specific features of morphological and genetic polymorphism of the population of the anadromous White Sea common whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) from the Keret' River are presented. As assessed by its morphological features, the whitefish population of the Keret' is homogenous. A comparison of the Keret' whitefish with whitefish populations of both Europe and Siberia revealed clear differences. These differences relate first and foremost to the fish locomotion and orientation in space: body depth, length and positions of fins, and interorbital width. The characteristics of skull features (craniological analysis) of the White Sea whitefish are presented for the first time. The results of an analysis of the polymorphism of the ND1 fragment of the mitochondrial DNA confirmed an earlier suggestion about the mixed origin of the Keret' River whitefish: the descendants of three different phylogenetic lineages were revealed in the population.

Аннотация: It is shown that in the area inhabited by a colony of the common heron in a high-trophic shallow lake a number of structure parameters of plankton undergoes changes similar to those observed at anthropogenic eutrophication and indicating an increase in biogenic and organic load. At the same time a number of changes is revealed that are usually not registered when human influence increases. The composition and content of polyunsaturated fatty acids in seston and zooplankton show that diatoms and detritus of land genesis play relatively smaller role in the zooplankton nutrition in the lake area influenced by the birds. The zooplankton developing in this zone is a better food rich in essential docosahexaenoic acid necessary for the growth and development of the fish. В© 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: This article is devoted to presenting the hypothesis explaining the fact of a considerable prevalence of phenotypic males among the triploid pink salmon as well as the regular occurrence of intersexes, which were revealed by us. This hypothesis also explains the large proportion (in some cases) in pink salmon populations of the individuals whose genetic sex does not match the phenotypic sex. We assume that the genes encoding the factors that contribute to the transformation of individuals into males (but not the marker sequences of the Y chromosome) are present not only in the Y chromosome of pink salmon but also in the X chromosome, although in smaller quantities.
