fatty acids -- aquaculture -- food chain -- bioaccumulation
Аннотация: Two fish species reared in aquaculture (pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha and whitefish Coregonus lavaretus) and ten fish species from natural habitats (whitefish C. lavaretus, tugun Coregonus tugun, broad whitefish Coregonus nasus, least cisco Coregonus sardinella, vendace Coregonus albula, boganid charr Salvelinus boganidae, charr Salvelinus alpinus complex, northern pike Esox lucius, sharp-snouted lenok Brachymystax lenok, and taimen Hucho taimen) have been studied. The content of two long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (PUFAs), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA), in the muscle tissue of the fish and in their food (intestine contents) are compared. In the aquacultures of whitefish and pink salmon, the total content of EPA and DHA is significantly higher in feed than in the muscle tissue of the fish, which indicates losses of PUFA in the two-link food chain of the aquaculture during their transfer to the upper trophic level. EPA and DHA losses in aquaculture, which are confirmed by numerous literature data, mean an inefficient usage of the available sources of PUFAs and the aggravation of the global deficit of these biochemicals in the human diet. A study of natural fish populations reveals the accumulation of EPA and DHA in their biomass compared to food in many cases, although opposite phenomena are also observed. An assumption on the presence of an optimal, physiologically adequate species-specific level of PUFA in the fish muscle tissue has been made based on our data and literature data. If the level of PUFAs in the muscles is lower than optimal, their accumulation (bioaccumulation) from food and/or de novo synthesis are observed. When the optimal level is exceeded, the content of EPA and DHA in biomass approaches maximum species-specific values; however, part of these PUFAs entering from food is not digested or is catabolized. According to the obtained data, the species of the order Salmoniformes have an optimal level of 2 to 6 mg/g of wet weight. It has been found that in aquaculture approaching to maximum values of EPA + DHA content was accompanied by their losses (scattering) in the food chains, while in natural ecosystems the maximum values of PUFA content in the fish biomass are achieved by their accumulation from the lower trophic level. Boganid charr S. boganidae had the highest content of EPA + DHA in the muscle tissue among all known fish species (32.78 mg/g of wet weight).

Аннотация: Only males (fully mature and failing to mature) and intersexes have been found among triploids of pink salmon. Possible mechanisms of genetic sex determination in pink salmon are discussed. The possibility of using triploids to regulate sizes of artificial pink salmon populations is also discussed. Triploids of pink salmon are deemed inefficient to use in aquaculture. Delayed maturation is observed in some diploid females reared in farming cages.

benthivorous fish -- climate warming -- polyunsaturated fatty acids -- river -- water temperature
Аннотация: Contents of highly unsaturated long-chain fatty acids of omega-3 family (HUFA); eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3); and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) are the principal indicators of the nutritive quality of fish for humans. Effects of environmental factors, first of all water temperature, on EPA and DHA contents in fish tissue are not currently completely understood. To reveal the putative effect of water temperature, fatty acid composition and contents were studied for 6 fish species, inhabiting the cold waters of the Yenisei River (Siberia, Russia) downstream of a dam (hypolimnetic release from reservoir) and its adjacent warm water tributaries (the Mana River and the Kacha River). It was hypothesized that (a) fish species from the cold river would have higher HUFA contents than fish from the warm rivers and (b) temperature would be negatively correlated with HUFA content in fish species. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, distinct species-specific fatty acid profiles were observed, whereas contents of the essential fatty acids, EPA and DHA, in fish species from the cold Yenisei River were in general similar to that from warm tributaries. Thus, in contrast to the first hypothesis, phylogenetic factors overweighed the effect of water temperature and food (benthic invertebrate) composition, on fatty acid composition and HUFA content in fish. For the second hypothesis, for the 2 species inhabiting both cold and warm rivers, only one had higher EPA and DHA content at lower temperatures. Consequently, the response of EPA and DHA content in fish tissue to temperature variations may be species-specific.

Аннотация: We have analyzed the partial sequences of the mitochondrial COI gene along with the amino acid sequences of cytochrome oxidase subunit I, encoded by this gene region, in representatives of 11 genera of salmonoid fish. For amino acid sequences, two alternative networks are constructed with outgroups represented by either Esocoidei or Osmeroidei as the supposed ancestral groups. This way, Osmeroidei appear to be closer to the salmonoid fish than Esocoidei, and their presence in the network as an outgroup explains the available data on the morphology and karyology of salmonoids much better. A number of the results of this study are fundamentally new. In particular, the slowing down of the molecular evolution of the grayling (Thymallidae) is shown. We conclude that the charr (Salvelinus) is one of the modern genera of salmonoids closest to their ancestor. The hypothesis of the phylogenetic proximity of the genera Brachymystax, Hucho, and Salmo has been confirmed. We also discuss the possibility that it is namely the changes in the amino acid sequence of cytochrome oxidase subunit I that lead to postzygotic reproductive isolation between taxa.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
Docosahexaenoic acid -- Ecomorphological factors -- Eicosapentaenoic acid -- Nutritive value -- Phylogenetic factors
Аннотация: Fish are recognized as the main source of physiologically important omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, namely, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), for human nutrition. However, muscle tissue contents of these fatty acids in diverse fish species, i.e., their nutritive value for humans, varied within two orders of magnitude. We reviewed contents of EPA and DHA, measured by similar methods using an internal standard during chromatography as mg per g of wet mass in 172 fish species belonging to 16 orders, to evaluate probable variations in phylogenetic and ecological drivers. EPA + DHA content varied from 25.6 mg g(-1) of wet mass (Sardinops sagax) to 0.12 mg g(-1) (Gymnura spp.). Multidimensional redundancy analysis revealed that among phylogenetic, ecomorphological and abiotic environmental factors, the highest proportion of variation contribution belonged to the shared contribution of sets of phylogenetic and ecomorphological factors. Specifically, the highest values of EPA + DHA content were characteristic of fish belonging to the orders Clupeiformes or Salmoniformes, were pelagic fast swimmers, ate zooplankton and inhabited marine waters or migrated from fresh to marine waters (anadromous migrations). High EPA and DHA content in muscle tissues of the above species appeared to be a metabolic adaptation for fast continuous swimming. In contrast to common beliefs, our meta-analysis did not support the significant influence of higher trophic levels (piscivory) and cold environments (homeoviscous adaptation) on EPA and DHA content in fish. However, many causes of high and low levels of physiologically important fatty acids in certain fish species remained unexplained and require evaluation in future studies.

Arctic Ocean -- zoogeography -- phylogeography -- fish -- lamprey -- evolution -- immobilization
Аннотация: A critical analysis of literature data on the distribution, morphology, and phylogeography of the Arctic lamprey (Lethenteron camtschaticum) and five species of marine and anadromous fish such as navaga (Eleginus navaga), pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax dentex), Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii), and pond smelt (Hypomesus olidus) has been performed. The results show that all these species have colonized Northern European seas, distributing along the Arctic coastline of Eurasia after the glacier retreat. The reasons that the dispersal of these species in the Atlantic Ocean may be impeded (preference for a cold environment, competition, and decrease of the evolutionary potential) are discussed.

Аннотация: The results of a study of the specific features of morphological and genetic polymorphism of the population of the anadromous White Sea common whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus L.) from the Keret' River are presented. As assessed by its morphological features, the whitefish population of the Keret' is homogenous. A comparison of the Keret' whitefish with whitefish populations of both Europe and Siberia revealed clear differences. These differences relate first and foremost to the fish locomotion and orientation in space: body depth, length and positions of fins, and interorbital width. The characteristics of skull features (craniological analysis) of the White Sea whitefish are presented for the first time. The results of an analysis of the polymorphism of the ND1 fragment of the mitochondrial DNA confirmed an earlier suggestion about the mixed origin of the Keret' River whitefish: the descendants of three different phylogenetic lineages were revealed in the population.

Аннотация: The present study deals with the development of the principles and conditions of fish waste mineralization using the method of wet combustion with hydrogen peroxide in alternating electromagnetic field and describes testing mineralized human waste and fish waste as sources of nutrients for plants in the biotechnical human life support system (BTLSS). The study shows that mineralization of fish waste in the wet combustion reactor should be performed in the presence of readily oxidized organic matter, represented by human waste, as an activator of oxidation. Re-mineralization of the sediment in the mixture of hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid in the wet combustion reactor converts mineral elements bound in the sediment into the form available to plants. Using mineralized fish waste as an additional source of mineral elements in the nutrient solutions for growing plants based on mineralized human waste is a way to reduce the amounts of mineral elements added to the solution to replenish it, enabling fuller closure of material loops in the BTLSS.

Аннотация: Diverse, multidirectional changes in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry are detected in the coastal zone of a plain reservoir in the vicinity of a semiaquatic bird colony during vegetation season with extra high water level. Under these conditions, specific patterns of phyto- and zooplankton structure and quantitative characteristics, that, as was found out earlier, result from the vital activity of birds belonging to the family Ardeidae (namely, raising the share of mixotrophic phytoflagellates and copepods in plankton species composition) are leveled out. The main role in this process belongs to decomposition of immersed vegetation in the coastal zone, development of littoral macrophytes, and trophic relationships between algae and invertebrates. However, increase in atmospheric precipitation leads to increase in copepods abundance, which seems to be related to fast and intensive inflow of nitrogen-rich products of birds' vital activity. Due to this, during the whole period of observations, the following tendencies are revealed in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry in the vicinity of the bird colony: 1) concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus and their ratios turn out to be auspicious for predominance of diatoms and mixotrophic phytoflagellates, rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DSA); 2) the abundance of phytoplankton, rich in polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (PEFA), favors propagation of those planktonic crustaceans which contain significantly more DSA and are more valuable food items for fish; 3) predominance of zooplankters, rich in PEFA, leads to higher concentration of PEFA in fry fish tissues, which, in certain periods, turns out to be advantageous for successful development and growth of dominant species of fish fry, such as roach, bream, white bream, and perch, by comparison with the test site.

Аннотация: It has been shown that the main drivers of the dynamics of cladoceran and copepod abundances can be predators (fish), the quantity and/or quality of food in terms of the contents of eicosapentaenoic acid, phosphorus and nitrogen in the seston under eutrophic conditions. In experimental mesocosms under eutrophic conditions, we found that, fish did not affect the quantity and quality of food resources for crustaceans. In the second half of experiments, however, dominance shifted from copepods to cladocerans. This was due to the improvement of the food quality for cladocerans in terms of the carbon-to-phosphorus ratio in the seston rather than to fish predation. Under eutrophic conditions, fish reduced the biomass of both cladocerans and copepods without changing the ratio between them.

Аннотация: The present study proves the presence of seasonal variability of LWRs of Arctic grayling and Siberian dace inhabiting the middle reaches of the Yenisei River. LWRs were estimated using total length (cm) and total body weight (g). The literature data on LWRs of dace and grayling from different regions were compared using log a over b plot. The comparison revealed that seasonal variability of LWRs was wider than the geographic variability for these species. The position of points on the plot can be used to predict the season of sample collection and vice versa.

Аннотация: This is the report about the secondary contact zone of coregonids in the Upper Volga basin. Two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogenetic lineages of vendace Coregonus albula (Linnaeus, 1758) living in Lake Pleshcheyevo have been analyzed and compared in terms of morphological characters. These lineages have developed under the conditions of allopatry and are characterized by strong differences of the mitochondrial DNA sequences. The lineages have coexisted in the same lake since the last glaciation maximum (about 10,000years ago). The morphological analysis has shown that representatives of both lineages correspond to C. albula, while slight, morphological variations between lineages indicate different food preferences and locomotor abilities. Scenarios where multiple distinct coexisting phylogenetic lineages are characterized by low levels of morpho-ecological divergence are uncommon. These situations are important for understanding biodiversity dynamics and the mechanisms that drive coexistence, adaptive divergence, hybridization, and extinction when genetically divergent lineages meet in secondary contact.

essential polyunsaturated fatty acids -- fish -- food quality -- salinity -- temperature
Аннотация: Aquatic invertebrates are valuable dietary sources of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), for fish. Phylogeny, diet, and various ecological factors affect the fatty acid composition of aquatic invertebrates. We focused our study on the effect of ecological factors to a cosmopolitan species inhabiting lakes that differed in salinity, temperature, and presence/absence of predators (fish). To avoid the effect of phylogeny, which strongly influences the fatty acid composition of animals, we studied several populations of one cosmopolitan benthic species, Gammarus lacustris Sars. We found that differences in fatty acid percentages of G. lacustris were mainly affected by differences in their diets. Some populations preferred dinoflagellates, cryptophytes, green algae/cyanobacteria, and bacteria; other populations selected diatoms; and still other populations consumed zooplankton or allochthonous (terrestrial) organic matter. The salinity and presence/absence of fish affected the contents of EPA and DHA in G. lacustris. Populations from saline and fishless lakes had significantly higher contents of EPA and DHA. Thus, stocking of fishless lakes dominated by G. lacustris with fish could lead to a decrease in EPA and DHA contents in the gammarids. We propose that some saline and fishless lakes could be used as a source of gammarids for aquaculture fish feeding. © 2018, © 2018 International Society of Limnology (SIL).

Аннотация: Content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20 : 5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22 : 6n-3) and the n-3/n-6 ratio are important indicators of nutritive value of aquatic invertebrates as food for fish. We studied fatty acid (FA) content and composition of 68 zoobenthic species. Benthic invertebrates differed significantly in their contents of EPA and DHA and n-3/n-6 ratios. The most valuable food for fish were Insecta, especially Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera, Gammaridae, and Turbellaria (Dendrocaelopsis sp.). The invertebrates of low food quality for fish were Hirudinea, Mollusca, Oligochaeta, Bryozoa (Plumatella emarginata), and Coleoptera (Dytiscus lapponicus). Our data suggest that the recent and ongoing global replacement of native species, mainly Insecta, by invaders, mostly represented by Mollusca, Crustacea, Polychaeta, Oligochaeta, Bryozoa, and Hirudinea, probably will reduce the nutritive value of food sources for benthivorous fish. In addition, some of the taxa studied have peculiar FAs, which may be useful as their markers in trophic webs. Thus, 20 : 1n-13, 20 : 2n-6, 22 : 5n-3, and 22 : 6n-3 are likely to be considered markers of Mollusca, Hirudinea, Turbellaria, and Gammaridae, respectively, for tracing food webs in freshwater ecosystems. © 2016 by The Society for Freshwater Science.

The Yenisei River is contaminated with artificial radionuclides due to the weapons-grade plutonium production at the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC) at Zheleznogorsk (Russia) for more than 50 years. The last reactor plant at the MCC was shut down in 2010. The research presents the data on accumulation of artificial radionuclides in wild fish (pike, Esox lucius; grayling, Thymallus arcticus; and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus baicalensis) inhabiting the radioactively contaminated part of the Yenisei River between 2005 and 2014. Among artificial radionuclides that were detected in fish muscles when the last nuclear reactor plant was operating (32P, 60Co, 65Zn, 137Cs), only 137Cs was recorded four years after the shutdown of the nuclear power plant at the MCC. The concentrations of 137Cs in fish muscles were considerably below the sanitary norms for this radionuclide in the Russian Federation. Piscivorous fish species accumulated higher concentration of 137Cs in their muscles than non-predatory species. Concentration of 137Cs in fish fauna of the Yenisei River did not decrease after the shutdown of the last nuclear power plant at the MCC, while the concentration of radionuclides with induced activity decreased considerably. This can be explained by the constant inflow of 137Cs into the Yenisei River due to discharges from the radiochemical plant at the MCC and the deposits of 137Cs in the bottom sediments. We can expect that the concentration of 137Cs in fish muscles will not decrease in the next few decades.

Benefit-risk ratio -- Canned fish -- Heavy metals -- Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)
Аннотация: Fatty acid (FA) and element contents were studied in 14 brands of canned (in its own juice and with sunflower oil) saury (Cololabis saira), a popular product of Russian market. Canned saury is a valuable source of essential polyunsaturated FA - eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3). To obtain personal daily dose of EPA + DHA of 1 g for prevention of cardiovascular diseases, neural and inflammatory disorders one needs to intake from 26 to 76 g of canned saury, as was calculated for studied brands. ICP-OES analysis of 24 elements showed that Pb concentration in one brand and Cd content in most of studied saury samples exceeded standards for fish meat established by the European Commission. However, values of hazard quotient, HQEFA which estimate benefit-risk ratio of fish intake, indicate that canned saury is safe product for human nutrition. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Fatty acids -- Piscivorous and omnivorous fish -- Season -- Stable isotopes -- Trophic level
Аннотация: Two groups of factors, phylogenetic and ecological, are presently regarded as controlling fatty acid composition of fish, including essential eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids. Environmental effects, e.g., trophic position, temperature and/or seasonality, were previously studied using sums of fatty acids or only their level data. We tested the hypothesis that differences in trophic levels of piscivorous (pike and perch) and omnivorous (roach and bream) fish from a mesotrophic reservoir allow discriminating levels and contents of individual fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA. The more established measurements, i.e., stomach contents and carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes in fish muscles, were also carried out to provide linkages between the different ecological tracers, fatty acids versus stable isotopes, and matching the methods for long-term food sources (fatty acids and stable isotopes) and recent foraging (stomach content analysis). We also studied a putative influence of seasonality. Similar to other studies, there were seasonal changes in fatty acid composition and contents of two fish, perch and roach, due to direct and indirect effects of water temperature. Meanwhile, the piscivorous and omnivorous species captured in the same month, were explicitly differentiated on a base of stable isotopes and fatty acids. Significantly higher percentages and contents of DHA in piscivorous fish, perch and pike, relatively to those in roach and bream, likely indicated a higher trophic transfer efficiency for this essential fatty acid. All the fishes have commercial importance for regional fishery and are harvested from the studied reservoir for human nutrition. Regarding content of EPA + DHA (mg g?1 fish) as the indicator of nutritive value for humans, pike had the highest nutritive value, roach and perch had intermediate overlapped values, and bream was of the least benefit. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

essential polyunsaturated fatty acids -- river zoobenthos -- secondary -- production -- biodiversity -- water temperature -- climate warming
Аннотация: Highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA), namely eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA), which are essential for many animals, including humans, are mainly produced in aquatic trophic webs. In fast-flowing rivers, macrozoobenthos is the main source of HUFA for fish and may be particularly vulnerable to thermal alterations associated with climate change. We studied benthic communities in a unique natural ecosystem: the Yenisei River downstream of the dam of Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Power Station with very low temperature in summer because of discharge of cold water from deep in the reservoir and its tributaries with high summer temperature. This natural experiment' allowed to get rid of confounding factors, such as differences in light, seasonality, geology (biogeochemistry) and biogeography (regional species pools). As found, in spite of an increase of biodiversity and rates of daily production in warm rivers compared with cold sites, DHA and partly EPA production of zoobenthos decreased with the increase of temperature because of changes in species composition. Thus, in a climate warming context, we can predict a decrease of production of these HUFA by river zoobenthos and thereby a diminishing of their supply for fish and next to humans. Аннотация: Triploid fish has become an important item of commercial aquaculture, but data on its fatty acid (FA) composition are still controversial, especially regarding essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA). We studied FA composition and content of diploid and triploid pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, reared in aquaculture in a bay of the White Sea (Russia). FA composition, measured as percentages of total FA of triploids and immature diploid females significantly differed from that of mature diploid fish. Specifically, mature diploids had higher percentage of EPA and DHA in their muscle tissue (filets) compared to that of triploids and immature diploid females. Nevertheless, the contents of EPA and DHA per mass of the filets in diploid and triploid specimens were similar. Thus, no special efforts are needed to improve EPA and DHA contents in filets of triploids. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd
