Аннотация: We studied fatty acid (FA) composition in samples from bodies and intestinal contents of the littoral amphipod Gammarus lacustris Sars, from the Bugach freshwater reservoir. Simultaneously, samples of seston and bottom sediments were also collected from the reservoir during early August. There were no differences in FA composition of gut contents, seston and sediments of pebbly bottom. Seston was the main food source of Gammarus but some FAs Gammarus got from sediments. The FA composition of G. lacustris and seston from the Bugach freshwater reservoir were compared with those of the animals from the saltwater Lake Shira (Siberia). While FA composition of the two Gammarus populations differed significantly, those of seston were practically similar: the composition of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, 20:5omega3, 22:6omega3 and 20:4omega6, were significantly higher in animals from saline Shira Lake, whereas 16:1 and 16:0 were higher in the freshwater populations of amphipods from the Bugach freshwater reservoir. Taking into account the relevant literature data, we hypothesise that this difference in C16 acid might be a distinguishing characteristic of FA composition of freshwater and saltwater crustaceans.

The vertical distribution and abundance of Gammarus lacustris in the pelagic zone of two fishless meromictic lakes, L. Shira and L. Shunet, in Southern Siberia (Russia), was studied with the underwater video recording system and using vertical hauls. In both lakes, during summer stratification, Gammarus was distributed non-homogenously, with a stable peak in the metalimnion. The average depth of Gammarus population in the pelagic zone was significantly correlated with the depth of the thermocline. Gammarus abundances obtained using vertical plankton hauls with net were quite comparable with those obtained from video records. The peak abundance of Gammarus in the pelagic zone of the lakes observed with underwater video amounted up to 400 individuals m-2, while the peak animal densities in the metalimnion reached 50 ind. m-3. The data are compared with previously published abundances of Gammarus in the littoral of Lake Shira. Both littoral and pelagic can be equally important habitats for amphipods in meromictic lakes. The absence of fish in the pelagic zone, high oxygen concentration, low water temperature, increased seston concentration, elevated water density in the metalimnion and the anoxic hypolimnion can be the most probable combination of factors that are responsible for the peak of Gammarus in the metalimnion of these lakes. Аннотация: The effect of treatment water containing chemicals released by Gammarus lacustris or crushed/injured Arctodiaptomus salinus induced changes in vertical distribution of Arctodiaptomus in laboratory conditions. With food concentration in the medium corresponding to the maximum of algae concentration in Shira lake, A. salinus in an experimental vessel was situated higher than in the control. Average population depth of A. salinus decreased as the inoculation density of G. lacustris increased.

essential polyunsaturated fatty acids -- fish -- food quality -- salinity -- temperature
Аннотация: Aquatic invertebrates are valuable dietary sources of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), for fish. Phylogeny, diet, and various ecological factors affect the fatty acid composition of aquatic invertebrates. We focused our study on the effect of ecological factors to a cosmopolitan species inhabiting lakes that differed in salinity, temperature, and presence/absence of predators (fish). To avoid the effect of phylogeny, which strongly influences the fatty acid composition of animals, we studied several populations of one cosmopolitan benthic species, Gammarus lacustris Sars. We found that differences in fatty acid percentages of G. lacustris were mainly affected by differences in their diets. Some populations preferred dinoflagellates, cryptophytes, green algae/cyanobacteria, and bacteria; other populations selected diatoms; and still other populations consumed zooplankton or allochthonous (terrestrial) organic matter. The salinity and presence/absence of fish affected the contents of EPA and DHA in G. lacustris. Populations from saline and fishless lakes had significantly higher contents of EPA and DHA. Thus, stocking of fishless lakes dominated by G. lacustris with fish could lead to a decrease in EPA and DHA contents in the gammarids. We propose that some saline and fishless lakes could be used as a source of gammarids for aquaculture fish feeding. © 2018, © 2018 International Society of Limnology (SIL).

Gammarus lacustris -- Heat shock proteins 70 (HSP70) -- Nonspecific cellular -- stress-response (NCSR) -- Lactate dehydrogenase -- Diene conjugates -- Schiff -- bases -- Triene conjugates
Аннотация: The previously undescribed dynamics of the heat shock protein HSP70 and subsequent lipid peroxidation products have been assessed alongside lactate dehydrogenase activity for Gammarus lacustris Sars, an amphipod species from the saltwater Lake Shira (Republic of Khakassia). Individuals were exposed to a gradual temperature increase of 1 degrees C/hour (total exposure duration of 26 hours) starting from the mean annual temperature of their habitat (7 degrees C) up to 33 degrees C. A complex of biochemical reactions occurred when saltwater G. lactustris was exposed to the gradual changes in temperature. This was characterized by a decrease in lactate dehydrogenase activity and the launching of lipid peroxidation. The HSP70 level did not change significantly during the entire experiment. In agreement with the concept of oxygen-limited thermal tolerance, an accumulation of the most toxic lipid peroxides (triene conjugates and Schiff bases) in phospholipids occurred at the same time and temperature as the accumulation of lactate. The main criterion overriding the temperature threshold was, therefore, the transition to anaerobiosis, confirmed by the elevated lactate levels as observed in our previous associated study, and by the development of cellular stress, which was expressed by an accumulation of lipid peroxidation products. An earlier hypothesis, based on freshwater individuals of the same species, has been confirmed whereby the increased thermotolerance of G. lacustris from the saltwater lake was caused by differences in energy metabolism and energy supply of nonspecific cellular stress-response mechanisms. With the development of global climate change, these reactions could be advantageous for saltwater G. lacustris. The studied biochemical reactions can be used as biomarkers for the stress status of aquatic organisms when their habitat temperature changes.

zooplankton -- Arctodiaptomus salinus -- non-predatory mortality -- sediment -- trap -- carcasses -- stratified lake
Аннотация: Zooplankton populations can at times suffer mass mortality due to non-predatory mortality (NPM) factors, and the resulting carcasses can be captured by sediment traps to estimate NPM rate. This approach assumes sinking to be the primary process in removing carcasses, but in reality, carcasses can also be removed by ingestion, turbulent mixing and microbial degradation in the water column. We present mathematical formulations to calculate NPM from sediment trap data by accounting for carcass removal by processes in addition to sinking, and demonstrate their application in a study in Lake Shira, Russia. Carcass abundance of the major calanoid copepod Arctodiaptomus salinus decreased with depth, indicating the effect of carcass removal from the water column. The estimated NPM values (0.0003-0.103 d(-1)) were comparable with previously reported physiological death rates. We further used independent data to partition carcass removal due to detritivory, turbulent mixing and microbial degradation. Estimated ingestion by the amphipod Gammarus lacustris could account for the disappearance of copepod carcasses above the traps. Wind-driven turbulence could also extend the carcass exposure time to microbial degradation. Collectively, these water column processes would facilitate the remineralization of carcasses in the water column, and diminish the carcass carbon flux to the benthos.

Аннотация: The effect of a biotic factor-the presence of predatory fish in water-on the composition and content of fatty acids in crustaceans was studied in the populations of the lake amphipod Gammarus lacustris from two lakes with fish and three lakes without fish. It was found that, at an overall increase in the quantity and quality of food resources (namely, increase in the content of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the biomass), the relative rate of DHA accumulation in gammarids in the lakes without fish is higher than in the lake with fish.

Adaptation -- Amphipoda -- Gammarus lacustris -- Salinity -- Thermal tolerance
Аннотация: Temperature and salinity are important abiotic factors for aquatic invertebrates. We investigated the influence of different salinity regimes on thermotolerance, energy metabolism and cellular stress defense mechanisms in amphipods Gammarus lacustris Sars from two populations. We exposed amphipods to different thermal scenarios and determined their survival as well as activity of major antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, catalase, glutathione S-transferase) and parameters of energy metabolism (content of glucose, glycogen, ATP, ADP, AMP and lactate). Amphipods from a freshwater population were more sensitive to the thermal challenge, showing higher mortality during acute and gradual temperature change compared to their counterparts from a saline lake. A more thermotolerant population from a saline lake had high activity of antioxidant enzymes. The energy limitations of the freshwater population (indicated by low baseline glucose levels, downward shift of the critical temperature of aerobic metabolism and inability to maintain steady-state ATP levels during warming) was ob- served, possibly reflecting a trade-off between the energy demands for osmoregulation under the hypo-osmotic condition of a freshwater environment and protection against temperature stress. © 2016 Vereshchagina et al.

Аннотация: A feature of meromictic lakes is that several physicochemical and biological gradients affect the vertical distribution of different organisms. The vertical stratification of physical, chemical and biological components in saline, fishless meromictic lakes Shira and Shunet (Siberia, Russia) is quite different mainly because both mean depth and maximum depth of lakes differ as well as their salinity levels differ. The chemocline of the Lake Shira, as in many meromictic lakes, is inhabited by bacterial community consisting of purple sulphur and heterotrophic bacteria. As the depth of the chemocline is variable, the bacterial community does not attain high densities. The mixolimnion in Lake Shira, which is thermally stratified in summer, also creates different habitat for various species. The distribution of phytoplankton is non-uniform with its biomass peak in the metalimnion. The distribution of zooplankton is also heterogeneous with rotifers and juvenile copepods inhabiting the warmer epilimnion and older copepods found in the cold but oxic hypolimnion. The amphipod Gammarus lacustris which can be assigned to the higher trophic link in the fishless lake's ecosystem, such as Lake Shira, is also distributed non-uniformly, with its peak density generally observed in the thermocline region. The chemocline in Lake Shunet is located at the depth of 5 m, and unlike in Lake Shira, due to a sharp salinity gradient between the mixolimnion and monimolimnion, this depth is very stable. The mixolimnion in Lake Shunet is relatively shallow and the chemocline is inhabited by (1) an extremely dense bacterial community; (2) a population of Cryptomonas sp.; and (3) ciliate community comprising several species. As the mixolimnion of Lake Shunet is not thermally stratified for long period, the phytoplankton and zooplankton populations are not vertically stratified. The gammarids, however, tend to concentrate in a narrow layer located 1-2 m above the chemocline. We believe that in addition to vertical inhomogeneities of both physicochemical parameters, biological and physical factors also play a role in maintaining these inhomogeneities. We conclude that the stratified distributions of the major food web components will have several implications for ecosystem structure and dynamics. Trophic interactions as well as mass and energy flows can be significantly impacted by such heterogeneous distributions. Species spatially separated even by relatively short distances, say a few centimetres will not directly compete. Importantly, we demonstrate that not only bacteria, phytoflagellates and ciliate tend to concentrate in thin layers but also larger-sized species such Gammarus (amphipods) can also under certain environmental conditions have stratified distribution with maxima in relatively thin layer. As the vertical structure of the lake ecosystem is rather complex in such stratified lakes as ours, the strategy of research, including sampling techniques, should consider potentially variable and non-homogeneous distributions.     Artificial radionuclides in fish fauna of the Yenisei River in the vicinity of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (Siberia, Russia) / T. Zotina, E. Trofimova, A. Bolsunovsky // Radioprotection. - 2011. - Vol. 46, Is. 6 SUPPL. - S75-S78, DOI 10.1051/radiopro/20116649s . - ISSN 0033-8451
Аннотация: Activities of radionuclides were measured in five species of fish (grayling, dace, crucian carp, pike, cod) sampled in the Yenisei River (Siberia, Russia) in the vicinity of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (ROSATOM) from 2007 to 2010, with a gamma-spectrometer (Canberra, USA). The analyses of samples of organs and tissues of fish species revealed artificial (46Sc, 51Cr, 54Mn, 58,60Co, 59Fe, 65Zn, 85Sr, 99Mo, 103,106Ru, 137Cs, 141,144Ce) and natural (7Be, 40K) radionuclides in fish organs and tissues, including edible ones. The major percent (up to 80%) of 137Cs and 40K activity occurred in muscles of fish species, which also contained considerable percentages of 60Co (up to 70%) and 65Zn (up to 20%). Seasonal changes in the intake of artificial radionuclides by zoobenthos-feeding fish species (grayling and dace) were recorded and they were followed by an activity concentration increase in internal organs. The dramatic increase in radionuclide intake by grayling coincided with the change of diet source. Hence, the feeding behavior of fish can change the fluxes of artificial radionuclides in the Yenisei River. The most effective diet transfer of a radionuclide from gammarus to grayling (muscles and total body) was recorded for 40K (1.3) and much less effective for artificial nuclides. Chlorophyll fluorescence -- Fatty acid composition -- Viable gut passage -- crustacean -- diet -- saline lake -- seston -- stomach content -- Russian Federation
Аннотация: We studied the gut contents of Gammarus lacustris from the littoral of Shira lake, a Siberian salt lake, by microscopic analysis in conjunction with measuring of fluorescence of chlorophyll and composition of fatty acids. Gammarus ingested primarily fresh seston, probably settled on the bottom. Additionally, the amphipods obtained essential polyunsaturated fatty acids of ?3 family by selectively consuming bottom sediment particles. A considerable part of the ingested seston comprised cells of Botryococcus sp., which passed the intestinal tract in living form and their photosynthetic activity increased. This viable gut passage was likely one of the causes of bloom of Botryococcus in the littoral. Unlike a number of literature data, there was no selective digestion of any fatty acid species, including polyunsaturated acids, in the intestinal tract.

While FA composition of the two Gammarus populations differed significantly, those of seston were practically similar: the composition of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, 20:5?3, 22:6?3 and 20:4?6, were significantly higher in animals from saline Shira Lake, whereas 16:1 and 16:0 were higher in the freshwater populations of amphipods from the Bugach freshwater reservoir. Taking into account the relevant literature data, we hypothesise that this difference in C16 acid might be a distinguishing characteristic of FA composition of freshwater and saltwater crustaceans.

Аннотация: Spatial distribution of Gammarus lacustris in Lake Shira and growth of young specimens that feed on lake biota were studied. The amphipods have been shown to inhabit the littoral, sublittoral and the upper aphytal zones of the lake on stony-sandy soil and silted sand. The young and adult individuals stay apart. The young live in submerged or semi-submerged vegetation in the littoral, the adults in the sublittoral and upper aphytal zones. Maximum density of amphipods was encountered in the areas influenced by human activity. The feeding experiments revealed that the lake plankton is a more important food source for G. lacustris than any other food species. The specific growth rate measured was 0.039 d-1, with a length increment 0.095 mm d-1.
