Аннотация: We studied the fatty acid (FA) content and composition of ten zoobenthic species of several taxonomic groups from different freshwater bodies. Special attention was paid to essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), and arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6); and the n-3/n-6 and DHA/ARA ratios, which are important for consumers of higher trophic levels, i.e., fish. The content and ratios of these FA varied significantly in the studied zoobenthic species, consequently, the invertebrates were of different nutritional quality for fish. Eulimnogammarus viridis (Crustacea) and Dendrocoelopsis sp. (Turbellaria) had the highest nutrition value for fish concerning the content of EPA and DHA and n-3/n-6 and DHA/ARA ratios. Using canonical correspondence analysis we compared the FA profiles of species of the studied taxa taking into account their feeding strategies and habitats. We gained evidence that feeding strategy is of importance to determine fatty acid profiles of zoobenthic species. However, the phylogenetic position of the zoobenthic species is also responsible and may result in a similar fatty acid composition even if species or populations inhabit different water bodies or have different feeding strategies. Аннотация: Bryophytes are abundant in streams and are a habitat for many invertebrates, but their contribution to the diet of fluvial zoobenthos is still debated. To estimate the amount of bryophyte-derived organic matter assimilated by benthic invertebrates, we used a combination of fatty acid and stable isotope analyses during a four-year monthly study of a littoral site in the Yenisei River (Siberia, Russia). Acetylenic acids, which are highly specific biomarkers of the water moss Fontinalis antipyretica, were found in lipids of all dominant benthic animals: gammarids, ephemeropterans, chironomids and trichopterans. The dominant zoobenthic species, Eulimnogammarus viridis, had maximum levels of the biomarkers in its biomass during winter, and minimum levels in summer. The zoobenthos in the studied site regularly consume and assimilate bryophyte-derived organic matter as a minor supplemental food. This consumption increases in winter, when the main food source of the zoobenthos, epilithic biofilms, are probably scarce. В© 2010 Versita Warsaw and Springer-Verlag Wien.

Аннотация: We studied composition and concentrations of fatty acids (FAs) in benthos from pebbly littoral region of the Yenisei River in a sampling site near Krasnoyarsk city (Siberia, Russia) for 1 year from March 2003 to February 2004. Special attention was paid to major long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of the ?3 family: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5?3) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA, 22:6?3). In phytobenthos, which was dominated by diatoms, the annual maxima of EPA and DHA pool occurred in spring and early summer. In zoobenthos, EPA and DHA pool peaked in autumn, due mainly to an increase of the biomass of dominant taxa (gammarids) and to a moderate increase of the PUFA content per body weight. Seasonal peaks of EPA in overwintering insect larvae (chironomids and caddisflies) generally coincided with those of biomass of these larvae, while there was no such trend for amphipods and oligochaetes. In spring and early summer, the main part of ?3 PUFA, 40-97% of total amount, in the littoral region was contained in biomass of producers, i.e., benthic microalgae, and in autumn it was transferred to primary consumers-benthic invertebrates, which contained ?76-93% of total ?3 PUFAs. Аннотация: Seasonal dynamics of contents of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in dominant groups of benthic invertebrates: gammarids (Gammaridae, Amphipoda), oligochaetes (Oligochaeta), chironomid larvae (Chironomidae, Diptera) and caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera), and dominant benthivorous fish, Siberian grayling Thymallus arcticus, have been studied in ecosystem of the large Siberian river. During the year of the study most benthic invertebrate taxa showed significant variations in the contents of both C-18 and long chain C-20-22 PUFAs. In contrast, the fish, which consumed the zoobenthos, had no significant seasonal variations in long chain PUFAs' contents. Thereby, the fish, as organisms of relatively higher evolution level than invertebrates, was supposed to have more strict metabolic control of long chain PUFAs' contents. Evidence was obtained that the studied fish species, grayling, may be capable to convert dietary EPA into DHA. В© 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: During three field seasons (June-September) of 1997-99 contents of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb were determined in compartments of ecosystem (surrounding soils, bottom sediments, water, zoobenthos, macrophytes, and fish) of a fish and recreation pond situated at the edge of Krasnoyarsk City (Siberia, Russia). Contents of most parts of metals in soils, water, and macrophytes significantly correlated with each other. As concluded, their contents were determined by natural, general, geochemical peculiarities of the region. Heavy metals, contents of which were higher than federal upper limits of concentration, were revealed. In muscles of fish with different feeding spectra - crucian and perch - concentrations of some metals differed significantly; correlation graphs for metals also had different structures. Comparison of our data with those on diverse aquatic ecosystems of Siberia, Europe, North America, and China published in the last decade was carried out. It was concluded that a distribution of heavy metals in the compartments of an aquatic ecosystem presently have to be determined for each particular water body until general regularities are discovered.

Аннотация: Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of ?3 family are of crucial physiological importance for the most animals and they are an essential and deficient component of human nutrition. These compounds are most effectively synthesized by some groups of algae, hence, aquatic ecosystems are considered to be the main source of these PUFA for human nutrition. Factors controlling the content and distribution of ?3 PUFA in freshwater organisms of basic trophic levels and determined PUFA final production in freshwater ecosystems are considered in the review. PUFA biosynthesis is known to be tightly related to basic fatty acid metabolic pathways. Hence, fatty composition and the PUFA content of major freshwater hydrobiont groups, including bacteria, algae, invertebrates and vertebrates, and environmental and population age effects are described. The peculiarities of PUFA transfer between organisms of various trophic levels are discussed. The essential ?3 PUFA is one of the important parameter of food quality of aquatic consumers and they can determine the rate of energy and matter transfer between producers and primary consumers and, as a result, in a whole freshwater food chain. Analysis of PUFA content and its regulation in biomass of various fish populations indicates that freshwater ecosystems are of the same value in respect of PUFA sources as marine ecosystems. Despite the great practical importance, the studies focused on production and whole pools of ?3 PUFA in different freshwater ecosystems are still scarce and need to be continued.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): mixed culture--invertebrates--algae--metabolic products
Аннотация: An experimental investigation was carried out, and a mathematical model of interaction between invertebrates (infusoria Paramecium caudatum and rotifera Brachionus plicatilis) and algae (Chlorella vulgaris and S enedesmus quadricauda) in the producer-consumer aquatic biotic cycle with spatially divided links was constructed. The model describes the dynamics of a mixed culture of infusoria and rotifera in the consumer link, when they consume a mixed culture of algae coming from the producer link. A negative influence of products of algae Scenedesmus metabolism upon the reproduction of infusoria P. caudatum was revealed. Taking this into account, a qualitative coincidence of the results of mathematical modeling with experimental data was obtained. It was shown that the co-existence of mixed algae culture in the producer link with invertebrates in the consumer link in the producer-consumer aquatic biotic cycle is impossible because of the displacement of infusoria P. caudatum by rotifera Brachionus plicatilis.

Аннотация: The paper presents a experimental and mathematical model of interactions between invertebrates (the ciliates Paramecium caudatum and the rotifers Brachionus plicatilis) in the "producer-consumer" aquatic biotic cycle with spatially separated components. The model describes the dynamics of the mixed culture of ciliates and rotifers ill the "consumer" component, feeding on the mixed algal culture of the "producer" component. It has been found that metabolites of the algae Seenedesmus produce an adverse effect on the reproduction of the ciliates P. caudatum. Taking into account this effect, the results of investigation of the mathematical model were in qualitative agreement with the experimental results. In the "producer-consumer" biotic cycle it was shown that coexistence is impossible ill the mixed culture of invertebrates of the "consumer" component. The ciliates P. caudatum are driven out by the rotifers B. plicatilis. (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of COSPAR.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): fatty acids--triacylglycerols--polar lipids--gammarids--aquatic larvae of insects
Аннотация: The composition and content of fatty acids (FAs) in total lipids, triacylglycerols (TAG) and polar lipids (PL) in dominant groups of benthic invertebrates: gammarids (Gammaridae, Amphipoda), chironomid larvae (Chironomidae, Diptera), caddisfly larvae (Trichoptera) and mayfly larvae (Ephemeroptera) were studied in the Yenisei river. For the first time data on the FA composition of species belonging to Trichoptera (Insecta) are presented. The groups of aquatic insect larvae and gammarids weakly differed in total content of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Hence, the strong invasion of gammarids which occurred in the last decades in the Yenisei river should not result in a decrease in potential yield of essential PUFA in the ecosystem and corresponding decrease in food resource quality for fish in respect to PUFA content. Significant differences in biomarker FAs in TAG were found which correlated to specific food sources. Different levels of long-chain PUFA in PL of the invertebrates are discussed in relation to the genetic ability of particular taxa to form these FAs. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Inc. Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): cyanobacteria--diatoms--fatty acids--food quality--species composition
Аннотация: 1. We studied variation in the composition of fatty acids in the seston of a small freshwater reservoir with changes in phytoplankton composition during four growth seasons. We focused on the dynamics of the omega3 fatty acids because of their potential importance for zooplankton nutrition. 2. Total diatoms were related to the 20:5omega3 fatty acid (eicosapentaenoic, EPA) content in seston. Among two dominant diatom genera, Cyclotella was not associated with EPA content. In contrast, there was a significant correlation between Stephanodiscus and the percentage contribution and content of EPA throughout the study. Hence, freshwater diatoms can differ strongly in content of the essential EPA. 3. We considered abundant cyanobacteria as a potential source of 18:3omega3 fatty acid (linolenic, ALA) to aquatic food webs. Among four dominant cyanobacteria species, two (Anabaena flos-aquae and Planktothrix agardhii) showed significant correlation with the ALA content of the seston, while the other two (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Microcystis aeruginosa) did not. 4. Dinophyta had a relatively high level of 22:6omega3 (docosahexaenoic, DHA) for freshwater species and can be also a source of EPA to aquatic food webs. 5. Our results show that various species of diatoms as well as cyanobacteria can be of contrasting nutritional value for zooplankton because of their different content of the essential PUFAs. Diatoms, which are low in EPA, could not be considered as a valuable food, while some field populations of cyanobacteria might be valuable sources of essential ALA.

Аннотация: This paper presents a mathematical model of interactions between two herbivorous invertebrates (ciliate Paramecium caudatum and rotifer Brachionus plicatilis) and two planktonic algae (Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda) spatially segregated in two compartments of a chemostat - type experimental microcosm system. The model mimics a "producer-consumer" aquatic biotic cycle, describing the dynamics of the mixed culture of ciliates and rotifers, as "consumer" compartment, feeding on the mixed algal culture, as "producer" compartment, under N-limiting conditions. We experimentally found that metabolites of the alga Scenedesmus produce an adverse effect on the reproduction of ciliate Paramecium. Taking this effect into account improved the behavior of the model, the results of which came into qualitative agreement with the experimental results. Both our experimental and modeling approaches demonstrated that, even in conditions of a spatially - segregated "producer-consumer" biotic cycle, species coexistence is impossible either in the mixed algal culture or in the mixed invertebrate culture. Scenedesmus excluded Chlorella, whereas Brachionus excluded Paramecium.

Аннотация: Coastal eutrophication leads to a shift in primary producer communities from perennial species to ephemeral fast-growing species of macroalgae, which is known as “green tides” phenomenon. In brackish water habitats of the Baltic Sea, the opportunistic green algae, Cladophora glomerata and Ulva intestinalis, replaced the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus, while in freshwater estuarine parts they replaced epilithic microalgae. We studied Baltic populations of the macroalgae, C. glomerata and U. intestinalis, and epilithic and epiphytic microalgae, with respect to their nutritive quality, such as content of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and elemental composition. Fatty acid profiles of the two macroalgae were significantly different, including levels of essential PUFAs. We found a relatively high content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n−3) in C. glomerata biomass (4.14 mg g−1 C), whereas U. intestinalis had a lower value (0.45 mg g−1 C). Comparison with literature data showed that C. glomerata appeared to be a more valuable food for potential invertebrate consumers in respect to EPA content and stoichiometric C/P ratio than perennial F. vesiculosus and U. intestinalis. Thus, replacement of F. vesiculosus and epilithic microalgae by C. glomerata would not decrease the potential nutritive value of coastal algal communities for invertebrates. In turn, if U. intestinalis dominate in algal community, the nutritive value of primary producers in coastal zone would decrease. However, in following works, other important indicators of nutritive value, such as sterols and amino acids, should be included in the estimations of green tide algae species. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Аннотация: Content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20 : 5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22 : 6n-3) and the n-3/n-6 ratio are important indicators of nutritive value of aquatic invertebrates as food for fish. We studied fatty acid (FA) content and composition of 68 zoobenthic species. Benthic invertebrates differed significantly in their contents of EPA and DHA and n-3/n-6 ratios. The most valuable food for fish were Insecta, especially Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera, Gammaridae, and Turbellaria (Dendrocaelopsis sp.). The invertebrates of low food quality for fish were Hirudinea, Mollusca, Oligochaeta, Bryozoa (Plumatella emarginata), and Coleoptera (Dytiscus lapponicus). Our data suggest that the recent and ongoing global replacement of native species, mainly Insecta, by invaders, mostly represented by Mollusca, Crustacea, Polychaeta, Oligochaeta, Bryozoa, and Hirudinea, probably will reduce the nutritive value of food sources for benthivorous fish. In addition, some of the taxa studied have peculiar FAs, which may be useful as their markers in trophic webs. Thus, 20 : 1n-13, 20 : 2n-6, 22 : 5n-3, and 22 : 6n-3 are likely to be considered markers of Mollusca, Hirudinea, Turbellaria, and Gammaridae, respectively, for tracing food webs in freshwater ecosystems. © 2016 by The Society for Freshwater Science.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): adaptation--amphipoda--gammarus lacustris--salinity--thermal tolerance
Аннотация: Temperature and salinity are important abiotic factors for aquatic invertebrates. We investigated the influence of different salinity regimes on thermotolerance, energy metabolism and cellular stress defense mechanisms in amphipods Gammarus lacustris Sars from two populations. We exposed amphipods to different thermal scenarios and determined their survival as well as activity of major antioxidant enzymes (peroxidase, catalase, glutathione S-transferase) and parameters of energy metabolism (content of glucose, glycogen, ATP, ADP, AMP and lactate). Amphipods from a freshwater population were more sensitive to the thermal challenge, showing higher mortality during acute and gradual temperature change compared to their counterparts from a saline lake. A more thermotolerant population from a saline lake had high activity of antioxidant enzymes. The energy limitations of the freshwater population (indicated by low baseline glucose levels, downward shift of the critical temperature of aerobic metabolism and inability to maintain steady-state ATP levels during warming) was ob- served, possibly reflecting a trade-off between the energy demands for osmoregulation under the hypo-osmotic condition of a freshwater environment and protection against temperature stress. © 2016 Vereshchagina et al.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): essential polyunsaturated fatty acids--fish--food quality--salinity--temperature
Аннотация: Aquatic invertebrates are valuable dietary sources of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), for fish. Phylogeny, diet, and various ecological factors affect the fatty acid composition of aquatic invertebrates. We focused our study on the effect of ecological factors to a cosmopolitan species inhabiting lakes that differed in salinity, temperature, and presence/absence of predators (fish). To avoid the effect of phylogeny, which strongly influences the fatty acid composition of animals, we studied several populations of one cosmopolitan benthic species, Gammarus lacustris Sars. We found that differences in fatty acid percentages of G. lacustris were mainly affected by differences in their diets. Some populations preferred dinoflagellates, cryptophytes, green algae/cyanobacteria, and bacteria; other populations selected diatoms; and still other populations consumed zooplankton or allochthonous (terrestrial) organic matter. The salinity and presence/absence of fish affected the contents of EPA and DHA in G. lacustris. Populations from saline and fishless lakes had significantly higher contents of EPA and DHA. Thus, stocking of fishless lakes dominated by G. lacustris with fish could lead to a decrease in EPA and DHA contents in the gammarids. We propose that some saline and fishless lakes could be used as a source of gammarids for aquaculture fish feeding. © 2018, © 2018 International Society of Limnology (SIL).

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): aquatic--biodiversity--conservation--habitat
Аннотация: This review is part of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) report on Europe and Central Asia (ECA) and provides a critical assessment of issues facing decision-makers, including freshwater biodiversity and ecosystem trends as well as drivers of change. Freshwater systems are well established as the most threatened ecosystem type in the ECA region, with the quantity and quality of habitats and abundance of many species rapidly declining. Only about half (53%) of the EU's rivers and lakes achieved good ecological status in 2015 (as defined by the Water Framework Directive in terms of the quality of the biological community), and many lakes, ponds, and streams are disappearing as a consequence of agricultural intensification and inefficient irrigation and urbanisation, combined with climate change. The situation regarding freshwater biodiversity remains highly critical in ECA as many species remain threatened with extinction, including 50% of known species for some groups (e.g., molluscs, amphibians). Drivers of ECA freshwater taxa include the destruction or modification of their habitat, including water abstraction, which affects ?89% of all amphibian threatened species and ?26% of threatened freshwater invertebrate species. Of particular concern is the lack of data for freshwater invertebrates. Current status is available for only a minority of species, and the impact of alien invasive species is often unknown, especially in Central Asia. Based on current freshwater biodiversity trends, it is highly unlikely that ECA will achieve either the respective Aichi biodiversity targets by 2020 (i.e., targets 2 to 4, 6 to 12, and 14) or Target 1 of the Biodiversity Strategy. © 2019, © 2019 International Society of Limnology (SIL).

Аннотация: Diverse, multidirectional changes in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry are detected in the coastal zone of a plain reservoir in the vicinity of a semiaquatic bird colony during vegetation season with extra high water level. Under these conditions, specific patterns of phyto- and zooplankton structure and quantitative characteristics, that, as was found out earlier, result from the vital activity of birds belonging to the family Ardeidae (namely, raising the share of mixotrophic phytoflagellates and copepods in plankton species composition) are leveled out. The main role in this process belongs to decomposition of immersed vegetation in the coastal zone, development of littoral macrophytes, and trophic relationships between algae and invertebrates. However, increase in atmospheric precipitation leads to increase in copepods abundance, which seems to be related to fast and intensive inflow of nitrogen-rich products of birds' vital activity. Due to this, during the whole period of observations, the following tendencies are revealed in biochemical composition of seston, plankton, and fish fry in the vicinity of the bird colony: 1) concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus and their ratios turn out to be auspicious for predominance of diatoms and mixotrophic phytoflagellates, rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DSA); 2) the abundance of phytoplankton, rich in polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (PEFA), favors propagation of those planktonic crustaceans which contain significantly more DSA and are more valuable food items for fish; 3) predominance of zooplankters, rich in PEFA, leads to higher concentration of PEFA in fry fish tissues, which, in certain periods, turns out to be advantageous for successful development and growth of dominant species of fish fry, such as roach, bream, white bream, and perch, by comparison with the test site.

METABARCODING APPROACH
RAPID ASSESSMENT
Аннотация: Conservation and sustainable management of aquatic ecosystems is a priority in environmental programs worldwide. However, these aims are highly dependent on the efficiency, accuracy and cost of existent methods for the detection of keystone species and monitoring of biological communities. Rapid advances in eDNA, barcoding and metabarcoding promoted by high-throughput sequencing technologies are generating millions of sequences in a fast way, with a promising cost reduction, and overcoming some difficulties of the traditional taxonomic approaches. This paper provides an updated broad perspective of the current developments in this dynamic field presented in the special session (SS) "The use of molecular tools in ecological and biodiversity assessment of aquatic ecosystems" of the XIX Congress of the Iberian Association of Limnology (AIL2018), held in Coimbra, Portugal. Developments presented are mainly focused on the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain, including Atlantic Macaronesian islands) but include studies in France, Germany, Finland, Russia (Siberia) and South America. The networks within which these researchers are involved are yet even broader, profiting from existing molecular facilities, and traditional taxonomic expertise, which can be viewed as a characteristic of this new research area. It was evident in the SS that the use of molecular tools is widespread, being used to study a diversity of aquatic systems, from rivers' headwaters to estuaries and coastal lagoons, and volcanic, mountain and frozen lakes to hot springs. The organisms targeted are likewise varied and include fish, macroinvertebrates, meiofauna, microalgae such as diatoms and dinoflagellates, other protists, fungi, and bacteria (cyanobacteria and other). Some studies address the whole biodiversity (i.e., all species present independently of the taxonomic group) from environmental samples of water, biofilms and preservative solution from field samples (e.g., ethanol from macroinvertebrate samples). Great advances were acknowledged in the special session, namely in the use of metabarcoding for detecting hidden biodiversity, juvenile stages, low-abundance species, non-indigenous species and toxicity potential, and ultimately for ecological monitoring of diatoms and invertebrates. Yet, several drawbacks were highlighted and need further work, which include: taxonomic gaps in the reference databases (including gaps at species level and on intraspecific variability) or absence of public databases (e.g. for meiofauna), still high sequencing costs, the need of a substantial bioinformatics effort, difficulties in establishing the amount of environmental sample necessary for a good DNA extraction and the need for testing different genetic markers to obtain accurate results.
