Аннотация: The age-related changes in the temperature dependence curves (TDC) of chlorophyll fluorescence were studied in leaf segments of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill.), and cucumber (Cucumis sativum L.) plants grown under controlled photoculture conditions. Three major TDC patterns of chlorophyll fluorescence were identified within the temperature range of 25-70 degreesC, with each of the patterns corresponding to a certain phase of leaf development. The transition from one type of thermogram to another was a gradual and ordered process. The magnitude of the low-temperature TDC peak increased until leaves completely expanded and declined with leaf senescence. In the course of leaf senescence, the thermograms exhibited an additional shoulder, which further changed into a peak at 55-65 degreesC with increasing magnitude. Our data provide the basis for assessing leaf age from the type of chlorophyll fluorescence thermogram and the changes in the particular indices characteristic of TDC of chlorophyll fluorescence.

Аннотация: The slow fluorescence induction produced iii cucumber leaves by light in the range of wavelengths 380-540 nm and intensity of 180 W/m(2) was studied. The ratio of fluorescence maxima in the red region (F(734)/F(682)) in young and mature leaves was approximately 2. It is assumed that this value depends on an increase in the contribution of the long-wavelength fluorescence due to the spillover effect. In plants grown under natural conditions, the paramster F(734)/F(682) correlated with the concentrations of chlorophyll and carotenoids. In plants grown hi the light of red and blue regions no such correlation was observed and the F(734)/F(682) remained unchanged. It is concluded that the F(534)/F(682) is affected by the intensity and spectral composition of exciting light used during the growing.

Аннотация: The levels of free and bound forms of IAA, ABA, cytokinins (CK), and gibberellins, as well as growth characteristics and productivity were investigated in two wheat lines. The plants were grown under controlled conditions in an artificial ecosystem that allowed the irradiance, CO2 concentration, and rhizosphere temperature to be changed. The main difference in the hormonal status of leaves of tall spring wheat, line 232, and dwarf wheat, line 95-3, was the absence of GA(9) gibberellins in the latter. It was found that the light intensity and temperature of rhizosphere insignificantly affected the balance of endogenous phytohormones and HI in wheat. The elevation of CO2 concentration resulted in a considerable increase in the content of free IAA, an appearance of free GA(9), and a rise in the productivity of wheat, line 232. The concentration of CO2 was shown to be a major parameter that determined HI in the experimental ecological system.

Аннотация: The effects of actinic light (AL) intensity on the age dependence of nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching (q(N)) and effective quantum yield in PSII (I broken vertical bar(PSII)) were studied in continuously illuminated wheat leaves of the upper tier. Regular changes were revealed in both age dependence of q(N) at elevated AL intensities and light curves of q(N). These changes are related to alterations in strategies of redistribution and use of absorbed light energy by the photosynthetic apparatus at different stages of wheat leaf development. Unlike I broken vertical bar(PSII), q(N) as a parameter was more sensitive to the differences in the leaf age at a certain range of light intensities. At the same time, the stability of q(N) at moderate light intensities may serve as an indication of leaf maturity.

Аннотация: Wheat (Triticum sativus L.) seedlings of various ages (2- to 16-day-old plants) were used to study age-dependent changes in the chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) at various light intensities during flu- orescence measurements. Plants were raised in a growth chamber using hydroponics with expanded clay, controlled environmental conditions, and 690 A mu mol/(m(2) s) photon flux density (PFD) of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Parameters of CFI were determined under actinic PFD of 380, 580, 820, and 1340 A mu mol/(m(2) s) PAR. The fifth leaf from the stem base, exposed to uniform lighting, was sampled for measurements. This leaf emerged at the plant age of 16 days. Based on fluorescence data, we calculated the maximal photochemical quantum yield of photosystem II (F (v)/F (m)), the effective photochemical quantum yield of PSII (Yield), parameters of photochemical (qP) and non-photochemical (qN and NPQ) quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence, the F (p)/F (t) ratio, and the "vitality index" (fluorescence decrease ratio, R (fd)). At moderate actinic PFD, applied commonly in PAM fluorometers (about 380 A mu mol/(m(2) s)), age-dependent changes in NPQ, F (p)/F (t), and R (fd) were observed. Analysis of CFI parameters in wheat leaves of different ages at PFD increasing from 380 to 820 A mu mol/(m(2) s) revealed that R (fd), NPQ, and qN are the most sensitive markers of the leaf age among all parameters tested. These suitable indicators can be used for rapid assessment of the leaf age.

Аннотация: Additional integral and kinetic parameters of induction curves have been introduced on the basis of analysis of currently employed parameters of slow induction of fluorescence (SIF) for a more complete quantitative description of SIF changes during ontogenesis of higher plant leaves. High sensitivity of the additional parameters to the age state of leaf tissue as compared with previously employed parameters is demonstrated on the example of cucumber leaves (Cucumis sativus L.). Analysis of the relationship between the photosynthetic rate and SIF parameters of separate cucumber leaf disks revealed the presence of a high positive correlation between the photosynthetic rate and the greatest possible average decline in fluorescence intensity during the inductive period for mature regions of the leaf and regions starting to senesce (the correlation coeffcient attained values of 0.95), which indicates the possibility of using the given SIF parameter in further elaboration of methods for estimation of chloroplast photosynthetic activity at the level of the higher plant leaf.

Аннотация: Based on own and literature data, the review of existing approaches to justification of concepts of selecting contemporary light sources for plant cultivation in greenhouse conditions is presented. The work covers comparative experimental data on productivity of lettuce leaves formed under radiation of light-emitting diode emitters with a phytospectrum and white light. A high-pressure sodium lamp was taken as a control source. Lack of valid differences between this data is found out. The article discusses data of literature where effect of heat radiation on plant productivity was discovered by means of light sources of different generations (metal halide lamps, xenon lamps), which is an additional factor apart from visible radiation spectrum which is capable of influencing photobiological efficiency of lamps. On the basis of data of literature, the role of background natural solar light in greenhouses which can negatively affect spectral efficiency of artificial light sources used for supplementary lighting of plants is discussed. A set of methodological factors influencing spectral efficiency of radiation for plant productivity as well as aspects of selection of lamps for cultivation of plants in greenhouse conditions for different latitudes are reviewed and scientifically validated. A controversy in selection of PAR chromaticity of light sources for plant cultivation is demonstrated. The concept of selecting 2 a light source for plant cultivation based on availability of specific response of plant groups to PAR chromaticity is proposed as the most objective for practical application. © 2019, LLC Editorial of Journal "Light Technik". Аннотация: Carbon turnover in aquatic environments is dependent on biochemical properties of organic matter (OM) and its degradability by the surrounding microbial community. Non-additive interactive effects represent a mechanism where the degradation of biochemically persistent OM is stimulated by the provision of bioavailable OM to the degrading microbial community. Whilst this is well established in terrestrial systems, whether it occurs in aquatic ecosystems remains subject to debate. We hypothesised that OM from zooplankton carcasses can stimulate the degradation of biochemically persistent leaf material, and that this effect is influenced by the daphnia:leaf OM ratio and the complexity of the degrading microbial community. Fresh Daphnia magna carcasses and C-13-labelled maize leaves (Zea mays) were incubated at different ratios (1:1, 1:3 and 1:5) alongside either a complex microbial community (50 mu m) or solely bacteria (0.8 mu m). C-13 stable-isotope measurements of CO2 analyses were combined with phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) analysis and DNA sequencing to link metabolic activities, biomass and taxonomic composition of the microbial community. Our experiments indicated a significantly higher respiration of leaf-derived C when daphnia-derived OM was most abundant (i.e. daphnia:leaf OM ratio of 1:1). This process was stronger in a complex microbial community, including eukaryotic microorganisms, than a solely bacterial community. We concluded that non-additive interactive effects were a function of increased C-N chemodiversity and microbial complexity, with the highest net respiration to be expected when chemodiversity is high and the degrading community complex. This study indicates that identifying the interactions and processes of OM degradation is one important key for a deeper understanding of aquatic and thus global carbon cycle.

Аннотация: Productivity values, sodium accumulation in aboveground biomass, and photosynthetic indices of watercress (Nasturtium officinale) leaves were investigated under conditions resembling artificial closed ecological systems (CES). The seedlings were grown on nutrient media with various NaCl concentrations (0.7, 1.4, and 1.8 g/L) for 7, 14, and 19 days after transferring them to saline solutions. The productivity of plants on the seventh day of their growth on saline media did not differ from that of control plants. The decrease in plant productivity was noted in all the treatments starting from the 14th day after transferring the plants to saline solutions. When NaCl concentration in the nutrient solution was raised from 0.7 to 1.8 g/L, a significant increase in relative Na+ content in plant tissues was observed, regardless of the duration of NaCl treatment. A substantial decrease in chlorophyll (a + b) to carotenoid content ratio was noted on the seventh and 14th days in plants grown at 1.8 g/L NaCl. In plants treated for 7 days with 0.7 and 1.4 g/L NaCl, the content of chlorophylls a and b and carotenoids was found to increase, which indicates the tolerance of N. officinale to CES conditions. The relative content of chlorophylls a and b in the light-harvesting chlorophyll (a + b) complex was independent of the extent of salinity. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem II reaction in N. officinale plants had typically high values (Y(II)(max) of 0.755 +/- 0.007). Using the Imaging Maxi version of the pulse amplitude-modulated (PAM) fluorometer, it was found that light curves for the effective quantum yield of photochemical and nonphotochemical fluorescence quenching (Y(II) and Y(NPQ), respectively) differed appreciably between the salt-treated and untreated plants in the case of long-term cultivation (19 days) at 0.7 and 1.4 g/L NaCl. The treatment with 1.8 g/L NaCl for the period from 14 to 19 days had no effect on light curves of Y(II) and Y(NPQ). It is argued that N. officinale can be used as a source of NaCl for humans under CES conditions.

Аннотация: The review is devoted to the study of the internal radiation regime in the canopies cultivated under controlled environmental conditions. The expediency of using canopies as an object of research for evaluating the photobiological efficiency of radiation in light culture conditions is justified. The appropriateness of light measurements in multi-tiered canopies is shown, taking into account the role of leaves of different tiers in the formation of an economically useful crop. The main requirements for light devices for their use in measuring artificial radiation in light culture conditions are considered, and a brief analysis of the existing instrument base for performing these studies is given. A number of examples show the complexity and ambiguity of the internal structure of the light field that is forming within canopies in light culture conditions. Conceptual approaches to the choice of spectral and energy characteristics of artificial irradiation for plant light culture are proposed and justified. The necessity of taking into account the light conditions of leaves of different tiers when choosing the spectral and energy characteristics of light sources for the cultivation of multi-tiered canopies is justified. Techniques, methods, and light sources used for additional intracanopy lighting are analysed. The efficiency of using side illumination of plant canopies and conditions for its implementation are considered. The advantages of the volume distribution of canopies on the most common multi-tiered lighting installations are discussed. Based on the presented mate- rial, we consider ways to improve methodological approaches for evaluating the photobiological effectiveness of artificial radiation in light culture conditions for canopies of cultivated plants, taking into account the features of their architectonics and internal radiation regime.

Аннотация: Light intensity and nitrogen concentration of nutrient solution are considered crucial for the contents of vitamin C and nitrate in cultivated leaf vegetables. We here investigated the effects of various combinations of light intensity (60,140 and 220 mu mol m(-2) s(-1)) and nitrogen concentration (7,15 and 23 mmol L-1) of the solution on the growth, photosynthetic characteristics, vitamin C and nitrate content of lettuce. Our results demonstrate that the lettuce had the largest dry biomass at the high illumination of 220 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) and low nitrogen of 7 mmol L-1. The higher light and low nitrogen also contributed to the accumulation of vitamin C and decrease of nitrate in lettuce leaves. The effect of nitrogen supply on chlorophyll concentrations was more efficient under low light than high illumination. Our results reveal that there was an obvious interaction between light intensity and nitrogen available for the photosynthesis, yield and quality of lettuce. This study provides valuable insights into the combinational regulation of light intensity and nitrogen supply for improving growth and nutritional quality of vegetables grown in greenhouse and plant factory. Аннотация: Application of pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM) fluorometers for measuring slow stages of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) is considered. With an example of Triticum aestuvum L. plants grown under continuous illumination at a photon flux density of 600 μmol/(m2 s) photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the CFI curves were analyzed with leaves of various ages as a function of actinic light intensity. The fluorometer PAM-2100 was applied for measurements of CFI curves. The characteristic peaks of CFI curves in wheat leaves were most conspicuous and had the largest amplitudes at 600–800 μmol/(m2 s) PAR, which corresponds to the middle range of actinic light intensities employed in PAM-2100 fluorometers. In plants exposed to favorable and stressful conditions, the developmental stages may proceed at different rates; thus, the comparison of fluorescence parameters for leaves of equal calendar age but having different physiological states may provide ambiguous data. Therefore, the feasibility of recording CFI curves of different types is quite important for rapid diagnostics of the age and state of plant leaves, as well as for adequate physiological conclusions. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The model of forest stand growth proposed in this study is based on R. Solow's model of economic growth. The variables introduced into the model are the "capital" (the phytomass of the non-synthesizing tree components in the stand-the stem, roots, and branches) and the "labor" (the phytomass of the photosynthesizing tree components in the stand-leaves or needles). Root phytomass is calculated with a special independent model. The process of energy production by the trees is described with the Cobb-Douglas equation. The proposed approach is used to describe growth processes in the forest stands comprising various species in Siberia and the age dynamics of net primary production. The model can explain a number of effects (such as death of the forest stand after the needles have been consumed by defoliating insects) that cannot be explained by standard logistic models. © 2018 by the authors.

Аннотация: Presently, the most promising way of studying, forecasting, and enhancing of organisms' tolerance to harsh environmental impacts is considered to be the estimation of initial functional state of an organism's regulatory systems. To resolve the problem of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) tolerance to harsh impacts at the level of such a complicated functional system as a plant leaf, it is necessary to assess integral responses of the leaf's PSA to the impact. At that, simple and versatile traits may have certain advantages. At present, chlorophyll fluorescence seems to be one of the main indices of PSA activity, which can be measured relatively fast and easy. One of the possible approaches to operational integrative assessment of PSA activity may consist in usage of the parameters introduced for the curves of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) slow phase. Temporal patterns of CFI are of special interest. The simplest index T-0.5 (i.e., half-time of chlorophyll fluorescence intensity decrease during the slow phase of CFI) appears to be an integral characteristic of activation rate with regard to a number of photo-assimilation and photo-protective processes in leaves. On basis of the studies, conducted earlier, and published data, we have analyzed the behavior of T-0.5 parameter with comparison to other CFI traits (namely: qN - non-photochemical quenching coefficient, ETR - electron transport rate, Phi(PSII) - effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry, F-p/F-T ratio) under different conditions. The influence of leaf senescence, changes in intensity of excitation light, slight dehydration of plants and their recovery from water deficiency have been examined. The pattern of T-0.5 behavior, observed in laboratory experiments, and the results of its comparison with other indices of CFI give occasion to propose the usage of T-0.5 for indirect estimation of PSA activity when operational integrative monitoring of PSA state is required. Further studies are necessary for establishing quantitative relationships between PSA activity and fluorescence parameter T-0.5 under specific stress conditions.

Аннотация: The range of variations in parameter tau(0.5) - half-time of fluorescence intensity decrease during the slow phase of chlorophyll fluorescence induction (CFI) - has been studied during ontogeny of leaves of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants in plant communities of different structures. Plants were grown hydroponically on expanded clay aggregate in growth chambers, under PPFD of 400 mu mol(photon) m(-2) s(-1), under controlled conditions. Analysis of the literature data and results of experimental observations of tau(0.5) behavior compared to other CFI parameters, nonphotochemical quenching coefficient, q(N), in particular, leads to the conclusion that parameter tau(0.5) can be effectively used for indirect estimation of variations in the activity of photosynthetic apparatus during ontogeny of plant leaves.
