Аннотация: New results obtained in the detection of rhythms in the low frequency range in the light signal of a small number of photo bacteria are reported. The luminescence of a small number of bacteria was recorded with an apparatus the sensitivity of which was 12 quanta/pulse. To check the possible rhythms in the luminescence of the bacteria, correlation analysis was made of the interpulse intervals of the detection of the signal with a computer. This revealed a definite rhythm in the bacterial luminescence the fundamental frequency of which lies in the region 8 c/s. Profound modulation of a bioluminescent signal at this and multiple frequencies was demonstrated. The harmonic components found in the spectrum of the signal refute the existing view of the continuous character of bacterial luminescence.

Аннотация: Taking into account the structural features of particles of the emulsions of organoperfluorocompounds (OPFC) using the equations obtained earlier by one of the authors in solving the general problem of the interaction of light with bi- and trilayer optically heterogeneous spheres the authors calculate the refractive index of the particles of a dispersed OPFC-based blood substitute. The possibility of averaging the refractive index of bilayer particles of an OPFC emulsion by volume is shown. Independent optical methods have been used to determine experimentally the value of the refractive index of OPFC particles and evaluate the thickness of their coat consisting of a surface-active substance. Аннотация: Spectral brightness coefficients are correlated with indices of vertical attenuation of horizontal irradiance, water transparency, phytoplankton chlorophyll content, and phytoplankton distribution. Data were obtained from Krasnoyarsk Reservoir and the Dnieper reservoirs. When diatoms and pyrrhophytes predominate, the maximum spectral brightness is in the vicinity of 580 nm, but when blue-green algae predominate the maxima are in the vicinity of 550 and 720 nm. -from Authors

Аннотация: For analytical purposes bioluminescence can be used in three main ways: 1. luminescence measurement of bioluminescent system components isolated in vitro; 2. determination of luminous organisms' reaction to the in vivo test-action; 3. measurement of bioluminescence in marine ecological systems. The majority of the reports of this Symposium are dealing with the first two topics. The aim of our presentation is to draw attention to the third one. The possibilities of bioluminescent analysis are wider than its traditional scheme of applications in the laboratory, when the emitting system is withdrawn from a native source and is placed in a cuvette of the light measuring device. The reverse scheme is also possible, i.e. the device can be introduced into light emitting system such as a marine biocenosis--the community of the sea inhabitants--where we obtain a highly sensitive and rapid means of gaining the information on the vital activity of marine ecosystems, i.e. their spatial structure, rhythms, man's influence upon them, etc. The present communication will consider the possibilities of this form of bioluminescent analysis.

Аннотация: We describe the experimental system having maximal possible closure of material recycling in an ecosystem, including people and plants, which was carried out in a hermetically sealed experimental complex "BIOS-3", 315 m2 in volume. The system included 2 experimentators and 3 phytotrons with plants (total sowing area of 63 m2). Plants were grown with round-the-clock lamp irradiation with 130 Wm-2 PAR intensity. The plants production was food for people. Water exchange of ecosystem, as well as gas exchange, was fully closed excluding liquids and gas samples taken for chemical analysis outside the system. The total closure of material turnover constituted 91%. Health state of the crew was estimated before, during and after the experiment. A 5-months period did not affect their health. The experiments carried out prove that the closed ecosystem of "man-plants" is a prototype of a life-support system for long-term space expeditions. В© 1989.

Аннотация: Cross sections and macerates were used to study leaf mesostructure in cucumber, sunflower, and tomato plants formed under controlled environmental conditions at an irradiance of 100 W.m-2 in the red and blue regions of the spectrum. White light served as the control. Three types of response to red light were isolated: the first type is a response not associated with harmful action of the light factor (tomato); the second a response associated with reversible changes of mesostructure (sunflower); and the third a response associated with irreversible changes of leaf mesostructure (cucumber). It is concluded that destructive changes during prolonged action of red radiation on the leaf are mainly associated with degradation of palisade parenchyma, whereas spongy parenchyma suffers less and takes upon itself the main functional role in certain species (sunflower). Species specificity was not clarified in the response of leaf mesostructure to radiation in the blue region of the spectrum.

Аннотация: We investigated the influence of blue (BL) and red (RL) light on gas exchange, biochemical composition, pigment content, and productivity in cenoses of radish plants (Raphanus sativa L.). The rates or true photosynthesis and light respiration are lower in RL than in BL, whereas the rate of apparent photosynthesis and productivity of vegetative mass are higher in the former than the latter. Possible causes of the different action of RL and BL on productive activity of radish cenoses are discussed in the paper.

Аннотация: A method for localization of a light source near the interface of two media is described. The method is based on an optical analog of tunnel effect when the radiation source is at the distance smaller than the wavelength from the interface. Application of the tunnel effect permits to obtain high resolution. The developed method was used to determine the localization of a bacterial luminescent system. It has been found that the sources of bioluminescence are located at thin subsurfase lager with width about 70 nm. This result is in favour of the peripheral (periplasmatic or membrane) localization of the bacterial luminescent system. This method makes it possible to investigate processes pelated to light radiation (luminescence, fluorescence and other optical processes) in a thin surface layer of various biological and physical objects.

Аннотация: The luminescence of obelin is initiated by NaOCl in a reaction mixture containing no calcium. The addition of Mn2+ enhances the light emission > 300-fold. Sodium azide and histidine, as singlet oxygen quenchers, inhibit NaOCl-activated obelin luminescence in the presence or absence of Mn2+. This suggests that the addition of NaOCl to the mixture causes singlet oxygen formation (stimulated by Mn2+ ions), and singlet oxygen initiates the light-emitting reaction.
